Presidential campaign returns to Ottawa County
By John Schaffner
Monday morning I got a phone call from the
Romney Campaign. This is what I heard. Mitt
Romney is having lunch at Republican Head-
quarters and would I like an exclusive interview?
Wow! I said, You bet!!!
Well, I guess I misunderstood. It wasnt Mitt
Romney, it was Matt Romney, the presidential
candidates son.
No matter, it was certainly newsworthy, so I
drove downtown for Matt Romneys speech to
the local Republican faithful. I was then granted
a 10 minute exclusive interview with this good
looking, well-spoken young man.
One simple question, I said. Why should
your dad be President of the United States?
After all, isnt that what people want to know
for sure to cast an intelligent vote?
The young man thought for a moment and told
me, I wish people knew why he is running. I can
assure you it is not to put another notch in his
belt. He deeply cares about America and wants
to lead a turnaround.
Okay, how is he going to get that accomplished?
Four things, he told me. First, he wants to
lower taxes, particularly on middle class families.
One example is he intends to eliminate capi-
tal gains taxes on everybody making less than
$200,000 per year. Next, reduce regulations that
are choking businesses, especially small busi-
nesses. Third, he wants to cut wasteful spend-
ing, which leads directly to item number four,
and thats balancing the budget. He then added,
And what is President Obamas plan? More
stimulus and more government.
Next question: Unemployment is regularly a
serious problem in Ottawa County, particularly
in the winter. What are Mitt Romneys plans to
cure the unemployment problem that has lin-
gered over 8% for nearly 4 years?
We need to grow the economy through the
private sector. First, through a sensible energy
policy to make us truly energy independent by
using our already abundant natural resources.
Second, by focusing on small business, the big-
gest job creator in the economy, who are cur-
rently being suffocated by the present adminis-
tration. Finally, crack down on trade cheaters like
China.
What about the man Mitt Romney, your father
and grandfather for your four children?
I wish people could see what I experienced
growing up. He can empathize. He truly believes
that joy and happiness come from serving. He
is a great father and grandfather. When we were
young, he adopted a struggling family, and we all
visited that family once a week to make sure they
were doing as well as they could be doing.
As with most presidential campaigns, as soon
as my interview with Matt Romney ended, he
was on to another campaign stop. While he was
here, he spoke, answered questions, and signed
autographs. Maybe someday well be talking
about candidate Matt Romney. Ottawa County Commissioners Mark Stahl (L) and Steve Arndt (R) are joined
by Matt Romney and Republican worker Yvonne Darling from Elmore.
Sandy Gottron with her son Derek
who is home schooled, met Matt
Romney on Monday.

It is hard for me to believe that
it has been almost 14 years since
my life changed drasticallyfor
the betterwhen through the
miracle of adoption I, Jill Ste-
phenson, became a mom for
the frst time! Two years later I
adopted my second child and it
has been a rollercoaster ride ever
since!
Both my son, Mac, now 14 and
my daughter, Kit, now 11 have
brought much joy, pride and
meaning to my life. Of course,
we have also had some diffcult
times and defnite challenges,
but thats the same for any fam-
ily. Mac and Kit both have Down
syndrome, along with a variety
of other health and/or behavior-
al issues, but more than anything
they are fun, loving, intelligent,
beautiful individuals. Of course,
they have their moments when
its not prettybut, overall, I
wouldnt change a thing.
Mac is now a very proud high
school freshman at Danbury
High School. He has been ac-
tive in school and community
activities his whole life, partici-
pating in t-ball, baseball, soccer,
basketball, play groups, theatre
camp, leadership camp, church
activities and a other things on
a regular basis. Mac is currently
a member of the golf team and
is looking forward to basketball
season as basketball is his favor-
ite sport. Mac enjoys and thrives
on being with his friends and be-
ing part of a group. In his spare
time, he enjoys listening to mu-
sic, hanging out with friends,
checking his Facebook and
watching videos. In the future,
he wants to get a girlfriend, go to
prom, get two jobs so he can buy

dreams become a reality for him.
Kit has just entered middle
school at Danbury. Kit has also
been involved in a number of
activities over the years, but her
favorites by far have been dance
camp and cheerleading. She
is in her second year of being a
Stonecrusher cheerleader for the
pee wee football team and she
does a great job. Kit is also an
avid animal lover. She spends a
lot of time with our dog, Rose-
mary, and her new rabbit, Cheer.
She enjoys grooming them, feed-
ing them, reading to them and
dressing them up! Kit likes to do
work and will draw/write/doo-
dle for hours, she also likes to do
homework and play on her iPod.
Kit is very interested in working
and doing jobs; in the future, she
would like to work in an offce
type environment or at Dairy
Dock. She will defnitely bring a
spark of energy and enthusiasm
to her job on a daily basis.

Its time to get serious
about Asian carp
Have Asian carp fnally infl-
trated Lake Erie?
Many Ohioans are asking that
question after the announcement
this month that more samples
taken from the lake tested posi-
tive for carp DNA. I believe this
is another indication that unless
we get serious, Lake Erie could be
irreparably changed through the
introduction of Asian carp to its
ecosystem.
The federal government, work-
ing with Ohio and Michigan, ini-
tiated the recent search after the
discovery that some water sam-
ples retrieved from Sandusky
Bay last year also tested positive
for carp DNA. Although the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service stressed
that these fndings do not con-
frm the presence of carp in Lake
Erie, other experts warn that the
pattern and location of the de-
tections suggest the presence of
live fsh in the lake.
For years, Asian carp have
worked their way toward the
Great Lakes from the Mississippi
River. Federal agencies such as
the U.S. Army Corps of Engi-
neers have monitored the prog-
ress of the fsh. They have tried to
erect barriers at various points of
entry, to block the carp from in-
vading the Great Lakes and per-
manently disrupting the regions
$7 billion fshery industry.
Much of the corps focus has
been on building electric barri-
ers to prevent carp from moving
through the Chicago Sanitary
and Ship Canal; unfortunately,
such barriers are known to mal-
function. Preventive measures
also have been established at
Eagle Marsh in Indiana, where
a simple chain-link fence is all
that stands between carp and the
Maumee River -- a direct tribu-
tary of Lake Erie.
This months fndings offer
further proof that our previous
actions to prevent the spread of
Asian carp have not been suff-
cient. Earlier this year, it looked
as if the federal government
would not have a plan in place
to combat Asian carp until well
after 2015.
Dissatisfed with this timetable,
I joined my colleague Sen. Deb-
bie Stabenow (D., Mich.) to rein-
troduce legislation that will fnal-
ly put in place a plan to prevent
permanently the spread of Asian
carp to the Great Lakes. The Stop
Invasive Species Act compels the
corps to submit to Congress by
2013 an expedited action plan
with options for stopping Asian
carp from penetrating the Great
Lakes.
Previous legislation on this is-
sue did not gain traction. But
this improved version ensures
that the corps must look at
ways to block carp from all pos-
sible points of entry to the Great
Lakes, not just the Chicago Sani-
tary and Ship Canal.
Thanks to the efforts of groups
such as the Ohio Nature Conser-
vancy, the Ohio Environmen-
tal Council, and the Lake Erie
Charter Boat Association, we
got the Stop Invasive Species Act
signed into law in June, less than
three months after its introduc-
tion. The legislation requires
the corps to make an interim
progress report to Congress and
President Obama by the end of
this month.
I hope the corps interim re-
port will include recommenda-
tions that can provide additional
protections for the Great Lakes
region in the near term. The fed-
eral government must acknowl-
edge that Ohioans are looking
not only for answers, but action.
It is imperative that the Obama
Administration meets the dead-
lines set by Congress and com-
pletes a report that identifes the
single most cost-effcient and ef-
fective solution for permanently
preventing Asian carp from en-
tering the Great Lakes.
With economic uncertainty
looming as far as the eye can
see, we cant allow this threat to
harm Ohios 100,000 fshing-
related jobs, as well as the rest of
the states economy.
Sen. Rob Portman
U.S. Sen. Rob Portman
(R., Ohio) is lead Republican
sponsor of the Stop
Invasive Species Act.
Township residents who drop off their
recyclables at their local recycling drop off
station will notice a change beginning in
late September. The District has purchased
new containers to replace the older 30 yard
containers. The new containers will be
smaller 8 yard containers that have front
lids as well as side doors for easy accessi-
bility.
Tim Wasserman, District Director, says
the only change residents will notice when
they go to recycle is the new containers.
There is also a new logo for the program
called Aim to Be Green.
These containers will have information
on the front that clearly explains exactly
what can be recycled and the new logo, he
said. We also believe the side doors will
be easier to access for the elderly residents
utilizing the stations.
These containers will be on a regular
routing schedule for pickup which will
provide adequate space when people drop
off their recyclables. The containers will
be serviced by a traditional style garbage
truck using forks on the front of the truck.
The material can still be mixed together
and will be taken back to a recycling facil-
ity where it will be sorted and processed
into new materials.
Residents who use the recycling stations
will want to avoid using the recycling sta-
tions onSept, Sept. 27 and 28 while the
new containers are being placed and the
old containers are being removed. Normal
recycling service will resume on Saturday.
Sept. 29.
Jim Sass, Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Solid
Waste District Board Chairman and Ot-
tawa County Commissioner, said that Ot-
tawa County residents have always been
avid recyclers.
Since 2000, Ottawa County residents
have recycled over 18 million pounds of
recyclable materials at our drop off sta-
tions, said Sass. This demonstrates how
committed our residents are to recycling.
A new company to this area called
Rumpke will be servicing the recycling
containers.
Residents will also notice a few new
things that can be recycled in the new
containers. The whole list of materials ac-
cepted is as follows: glass bottles and jars
aluminum and steel cans and aerosol
cans with the spray tip removed paper
cardboard, cartons (juice etc), junk mail,
magazines, newspapers, offce paper, paper
board, phone books, paperback books all
number 1 & 2 plastics and 3-7 plastic con-
tainers
The OSS Solid Waste District pays for the
servicing of the containers and the town-
ship does not receive any revenue for the
recyclables collected, so it is appreciated
that residents help to keep the area clean
around the bin by picking up any loose
material that falls when recycling.
Contact the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca
Joint Solid Waste District at 419-334-7222
or 1-888-850-7224 for more information.

trict recycling collections or sponsored

The Ohio Militia had to reload after fring shots at the
opposing Indian tribesmen.
A true Native American explained the skirmish last Sunday.
The Indians were sent by the British to cause problems on the

A Militiaman spoke to the audience about
the Marblehead skirmish.

BCS Superintendent Dr. Guy Parmigian,
Trustee Chuck Schultz, Trustee Dick Len-
ke, Clerk/Treasurer Susan Perrin, Trustee
Vic Harder and BCS Treasurer Tim Coff-
man at Salem Township Hall.
On September 17, offcials from the
Benton-Carroll-Salem School District met
with the SalemTownship Board of Trustees
at their regular meeting held at the Salem
Township Hall. Mr. Jeff Dornbusch, Presi-
dent of the B-C-S Board of Education,
introduced new Treasurer Tim Coffman
and new Superintendent Guy Parmigian.
Mr. Dornbusch explained to the Board of
Trustees the process of hiring the new B-
C-S leaders, and explained how they were
selected from a very high quality group of
candidates. Mr. Dornbusch commented
that B-C-S is an excellent district that
continues to attract high quality candi-
dates for employment.
Mr. Dornbusch applauded the diligent
work of Coffman in promptly getting the
school districts fnances in order. Upon
his introduction, Superintendent Guy Par-
migian explained that it was his privilege to
be selected as the superintendent of B-C-S
Schools, and that it is his priority to make
stronger connections between the schools
and community. Parmigian explained that
he wanted to be good neighbors and work
closely with local elected offcials to help
each other out where possible.
Treasurer Tim Coffman added that it was
important for everyone to work together
because all local government entities are
living within tight budgets. Then Parmi-
gian declared that he would be focused on
continuing to strengthen the district while
being fscally responsible. Parmigian fur-
ther explained that he has an open door
policy, and welcomed all present to not
hesitate to contact him if anyone has any
questions or concerns they wish to bring
to his attention. Parmigian went on to
stress the fact that the schools of Benton-
Carroll-Salem School Dis-
trict belong to the people
of the district and that he
will not forget this. Par-
migian offered his phone
number to the trustees and
told them not to hesitate to
call if they have any con-
cerns, and concluded by
asking the trustees for their
thoughts on the potential
sale of Graytown and Car-
roll schools.
Offcials from both B-C-S
Schools and Salem Town-
ship renewed their com-
mitment to work together
in the future for the beneft
of the residents and families
they serve.

Ottawa County law enforcement agencies have been spon-
soring the Medication Take Back Event for residents to prop-
erly dispose of outdated, unwanted and unused medications
since the Fall of 2010. The one-day collection events were
held twice per year. The Ottawa County Sheriff s Offce and
four local police departments are introducing a system that
will be more convenient for Ottawa County residents to
properly dispose of their medications.
Permanent drop-box containers will be available beginning
Monday, Oct 1. Ottawa County residents are encouraged to
drop off medications at any of the participating police de-
partments, which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week:
Danbury Township: 419 S. Bridge Road, Lakeside-Marble-
head, 419-732-2549
Village of Genoa: 102 E. Sixth Street, Genoa, 419-855-8515
Village of Oak Harbor: 146 Church Street, Oak Harbor,
419-898-2055
Port Clinton: 1868 E. Perry Street, Port Clinton, 419-734-
3121
The four police departments received a grant from the OSS
Solid Waste Districts Competitive Funding Grant Program
to purchase the steel box that will be placed in each depart-
ments lobby. Outdated or unused medications that can
be disposed of in the drop-boxes include prescription and
over-the-counter medications, medication samples, narcot-
ics (controlled substances), vitamins and inhalers. Residents
are asked to keep medications in their original containers.
Names and personal information should be crossed off or
removed. Do not dispose of medical syringes or needles or
illicit drugs in the drop-boxes.
Contact the local police departments listed above with any
questions.

State Representative
Randy Gardner visited
Oak Harbor on Friday,
Sept. 21, to visit with new
Benton-Car rol l -Sal em
Schools Superintendent
Guy Parmigian and new
Treasurer Tim Coffman.
Gardner welcomed them,
offered his assistance and
answered questions about
current educational issues
in the state legislature.
Mr. Parmigian comment-
ed that he thought it was
outstanding that Represen-
tative Gardner was proac-
tive in introducing himself
and establishing a solid
working relationship be-
tween himself and the citi-
zens of the district. Greet-
ing Representative Gardner
for his trip to Oak Harbor
was former B-C-S Board of Education
President Mrs. Jane Freimark, who worked
closely with Gardner over the years.
Following a discussion at the Board of-
fce the group walked over to Oak Harbor
High School, where they had lunch with a
group of students. During lunch they dis-
cussed a wide range of issues facing public
education. Representative Gardner asked
several questions about how state laws
and mandates are impacting the school
district. Randy is an approachable and
knowledgeable legislator in touch with the
issues facing education today, commented
Superintendent Guy Parmigian.
Gardner committed himself to staying in
contact with offcials from B-C-S Schools,
and to continue to be a champion for pro-
viding the best public education possible.

Pond owners still have an opportunity to stock their
ponds with fsh through a convenient and low-cost pro-
gram until Friday, Sept. 28. The fsh are supplied by Fend-
ers Fish Hatchery, Baltic, Ohio. Their tank truck, with
aerator, will distribute the ordered fsh on Thursday, Oct.
6, in the afternoon. Fish available are bluegill, channel
catfsh, fathead minnows, largemouth bass, redear sunfsh
and white amur.
White amur (more commonly known as grass carp) are
members of the minnow family and are reported to at-
tain weights in excess of 100 pounds and to live up to 15
years. They bear little resemblance to the common carp.
Although cultured in Asia as a source of food, the sterile
White Amur is primarily used in the United States to con-
trol aquatic vegetation. Leafy, rooted aquatic plants, such
as pondweed and coontail, are the preferred food of these
fsh. Lacking these, they will consume foating duckweed,
green algae and even cattails.
All fsh must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. To receive an
order form, call 419-898-1595 or stop in at 240 W. Lake
Street, Oak Harbor.

Carl Keller Field, Port Clinton, was the
site of the Sept.16 meeting of the All-Ohio
chapter of the Ninety Nines, association of
women pilots. Pilots and spouses came to
Port Clinton airport for the19th year that
they have met in conjunction with the an-
nual Gypsum reunion.
Guest speaker was Attorney Tom Coro-
gin of Catawba Island, sailing adventurer
and author of the book Agape. Corogin
told of his sailing trips to countries such
as Ecuador and Panama and around South
America. Of particular interest was Coro-
gins video of being lifted to a helicopter as
he was being transferred from a Japanese
freighter to a Chilean rescue ship below
South America after his sailboat was un-
able to be steered.
Following the business meeting, some of
the pilots joined the Gypsum reunion and
several others ate at the Tin Goose Diner
at the Aviation Museum. Ed Patrick of the
museum led a tour of the ongoing restora-
tion of the Tin Goose [Ford Tri Motor] be-
ing done by the local Experimental Avia-
tion Association [EAA].

David Banks and Sherry Peterson know
the challenges of being a community col-
lege student. As 2012 graduates of Terra
State Community College, they arent far
removed from the research papers, mid-
term exams and 8 a.m. classes.
So they are uniquely qualifed for the
roles theyve accepted this year in the
new AmeriCorps College Completion
Coaches Initiative at Terra. Banks and
Peterson are serving the 2012-2013 aca-
demic year supporting frst-time stu-
dents who are enrolled in developmental
education classes in their pursuit of a
certifcate or degree.
The program, at Terra and nine other
Ohio community colleges, is a strategic
partnership between the Ohio Associa-
tion of Community Colleges, the Ohio
College Access Network and ServeOhio
(the Ohio Commission on Service and
Volunteerism).
In this exciting initiative, we are using
the leadership skills of recent communi-
ty college graduates to provide mentor-
ing and coaching to community college
students, many of whom are frst-gener-
ation college students, said Dr. Ronald
Abrams, president of the Ohio Associa-
tion of Community Colleges.
Terra offers many supportive services,
but this program is different from any-
thing else on campus.
The Coaches need to be aware of ev-
erything that is happening on campus
in order to refer students to different re-
sources such as tutoring, academic advis-
ing, student organizations or counseling,
but they serve a very different function.
explained Raechel Matyas, Assistant Di-
rector of the Academic Service Center
at Terra and site supervisor for the pro-
gram.
Peterson, of Port Clinton, feels the pro-
gram is a perfect ft.
My long-term goal is to run a mentor-
ing cohort on a community college cam-
pus so it almost feels as though this posi-
tion were created just for me, she said. I
love engaging people, drawing out their
strengths, identifying their challenges,
and working together to fnd solutions.
Connecting that type of character build-
ing with volunteerism just feels natural
to me.
Banks, of Fostoria, knows how the stu-
dents feel.
The main reason I chose to participate
in this program is that I remember how
lost and confused I felt when I frst start-
ed here, Banks said.
The completion coaches have only
been interacting with the students for
about three weeks.
I think were working the kinks out,
Banks said. I have enjoyed communi-
cating and socializing with the new stu-
dents so far. My main goal this year is to
help all students who come in contact
with me succeed.
Peterson has similar aspirations.
My goal for this years program is
to see 100 percent of my students suc-
cessfully complete their developmental
education coursework while building
a foundation of service work they will
carry with them throughout their lives,
she said.
The two have the right idea, according
to Matyas, a Sandusky resident.
I hope this program will simply
give students that extra bit of support
they need to progress into college-level
coursework and show that having indi-
viduals who can focus on student success
can have positive impacts on student
persistence, she said. The grant runs for
three years, but hopefully the institution
and the students will fnd the extra sup-
port benefcial and institutionalize the
program after the pilot phase.
Participating coaches receive a modest
living allowance and a $5,500 education
award to help with college debt at the
successful completion of their 11-month
service term. Because they are not receiv-
ing a living wage, they are considered
volunteers, much like the Peace Corps
but in the States.
An important piece to the Ameri-
Corps College Completion Coaches Ini-
tiative is a call to service. David Banks,
Sherry Peterson and their cohorts in the
program have been charged with devel-
oping service opportunities for students
at their institutions.
The frst organized event for Terra was
Sept. 15 at the Ohio Veterans Home in
Sandusky. Five students and four Terra
staff members joined Banks and Peter-
son in spending several hours with the
veterans. Volunteers took residents on
walks, played cards, offered conversa-
tion, gave manicures, decorated for fall
and made bread for residents.
Collectively, we touched the lives of
more than 50 residents, Peterson said.
From walks to talks, games to TV,
greetings to good byes, we made a dif-
ference.
Raechel Matyas, site supervisor for the
program, treated one of the female vet-
erans to a stimulating conversation and
a manicure.
I enjoyed hearing stories from the
Great Depression and her time in Pan-
ama, Matyas said. But simply being
able to give a few residents some one-
on-one conversation was priceless.
The Coaches will be sponsoring an-
other opportunity to give back in the
Fremont area at the Liberty Center
on Saturday, Oct. 27 in recognition of
Make a Difference Day.
Questions about this opportunity
should be directed to Banks at 419-559-
2248 or Peterson at 419-559-2249.

Fresh ideas for
fnancial well being
Recently, the Ottawa County Com-
munity Foundation presented a grant to
Otterbein North Shore for staff develop-
ment. We dont just want employees, we
want to develop leaders with passion for
their work, and excellent decision making
skills, said Assistant Director Lisa Hart.
Studies prove that pro-active staff devel-
opment will improve the work environ-
ment in many ways including, increased
job satisfaction and morale, increased
employee motivation and creativity, in-
creased effciency in day-to-day opera-
tions, increased understanding of method
and strategy changes, reduced employee
turnover, and enhanced company image to
external communities.
The purpose of the fund is to offer op-
portunity for leadership and front-line
training. Im so appreciative to the Ot-
tawa County Community Foundation
for making this grant. Its allowing me to
participate in Leadership Ottawa County,
which Im really looking forward to. I also
want to be more involved in the commu-
nity, and I think LOC is a good avenue for
that, said Admission Coordinator Robyn
Karbler. The funds will also be used for
leadership development and technical
training for nurses, and required training
for STNAs.

BY YANEEK SMITH
Behind a solid game from quarterback Austin Wiegand
and great performance by its defense, Oak Harbor defeated
Port Clinton, 21-0, in the annual meeting between the two
Ottawa County rivals.
Wiegand fnished with 194 yards of total offense and
two touchdowns to lead to the Rockets to their third con-
secutive victory. With the win, Oak Harbor moves to 4-1
overall and 2-0 in the Sandusky Bay Conference while the
Redskins fall to 1-4 and 0-2 in the league.
Wiegand was 4-of-9 passing for 86 yards, one touchdown
and two interceptions and did much of his damage on the
ground, running 14 times for 108 yards and a score.
But the real key to Oak Harbors win was the perfor-
mance by its defense. For the entire game, the Rockets were
able to stife the Port Clinton rushing attack, holding the
Skins to 66 yards on 29 carries (2.3 yards per carry) and
making them a one-dimensional offense.
This was a typical, hard-hitting SBC game, Oak Har-
bor head coach Mike May said. The kids did a nice job of
moving the ball and the defense came up with some big
plays. We just try to go 1-0 every week.
Rockets running back Mark Konieczny had another great
game, running for 209 yards on 31 carries and a touch-
down and wide receiver A.J. Cecil fnished with four catch-
es for 86 yards and a touchdown. Cecil put Oak Harbor
ahead 7-0 when he took a short pass from Wiegand and
ran it in from 25 yards out midway thru the frst quarter.
They had so many guys in the box and we felt like we
needed to get out and pass the ball, May said.
The Rockets second score was set up on a fumble recov-
ery by Dalton Reau at the Port Clinton one-yard-line late
in the second quarter. On the next play, Wiegand ran it in
from a yard out to push the lead to 14-0.
Oak Harbors fnal score came in the third quarter on a
5-yard run by Konieczny. The Rockets drove the length of
the feld to score, going 88 yards in 11 plays with Konieczny
carrying the ball six times for 32 yards on the drive.
The Rockets dominated in nearly all facets of the game,
out-rushing the Skins (371-66), gaining more frst downs
(20-11) and winning the turnover battle (4-2). Oak Har-
bor was able to control the tempo and scored a touchdown
in each of the frst three quarters, but could not put the
Skins away. Port Clinton came up with two critical inter-
ceptions and, for much of the game, kept Rockets running
back Mark Konieczny in check. On top of that, the Skins
missed on two opportunities to score in the fourth quarter
as one drive advanced to Oak Harbors 12-yard-line and
another ended when quarterback Addison Rosperts deep
pass to a wide open receiver was dropped.
Rospert kept the Skins in the game with his athleticism,
keeping a number of critical plays alive. He fnished with
20 carries for 59 yards and completed 9-of-25 passes for
57 yards and three interceptions. Teammate Brock Moore
fnished with four catches for 32 yards.
Despite suffering their fourth consecutive loss, Port Clin-
ton head coach was very proud of his club, which has bat-
tled injuries to key players this season.
I couldnt have been more proud of a group of kids,
Hammond said. We had some guys and we had some
kids suck it up. Defensively, we played as well as we could
the last two weeks. Our kids kept battling back. I cant say
enough about how proud of our kids I am.
Its our offense if we have to be one-dimensional and
throw, were gonna be in trouble. Give Oak Harbor a lot of
credit; theyre a very good football team. And I think were
a good football team.
This week, Oak Harbor travels to Milan to face the Edi-
son Chargers, who are 3-2 on the season. The Chargers,
who have the vast majority of their starters returning from
last season, run a triple-option offensive attack. After de-
feated Port Clinton (21-18) two weeks ago, Edison fell to
Perkins, 37-7, as the Pirates rushing attack rolled up 306
yards and four touchdowns.
After playing four consecutive road games, two against
some of the states best programs, Delphos St. Johns and
Genoa, the Skins will fnally head home. Port Clinton will
host Margaretta, which is 1-4 on the season. The Polar Bears,
which lost 56-14 to Clyde last week, like to run the ball.
Rockets outlast Skins, win 21-0 to improve to 4-1
Oak Harbor Quarterback Austin Wiegand tries to get

After getting back on the right track with
a 26-18 victory over Cardinal Stritch in
Week 4, the Danbury Lakers lost a tough
game, falling 47-0 to Edon to drop to 2-3
on the season.
Bombers quarterback Kaden Sapp threw
for two touchdowns and ran for another
and Edon controlled the tempo through-
out in the victory. With the win, the
Bombers improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in
the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. The
Lakers are now 1-1 in the TAAC.
Edon took a 7-0 lead when Trevor Green
ran for a 35-yard-score with 9:43 left in
the frst quarter and pushed the lead to 14
points when Sapp connected with Brock
Thiel for a touchdown. Thiel would later
catch another touchdown pass from Sapp
in the third quarter to further the lead.
Despite putting up 47 points on the Lak-
ers, the Bombers defense was just as im-
pressive, holding Zach Kalinoski and the
Danbury spread offense in check for the
entire game.
I thought we had a good plan for them,
but they beat us on the line, said Danbury
head coach Bryan Dudash.
Last season, the Bombers
fnished 7-3 and qualifed
for the playoffs. There is a
good chance that, should
they fnish 4-1 or better,
theyll make it back to the
postseason.
After playing three con-
secutive road games, the
Lakers host Toledo Chris-
tian on Friday. The Eagles
are 3-2 on the season and
have won two consecu-
tive games, highlighted by
41-13 win over Cardinal
Stritch last week.
With fve games left in
the season, there is still a
good chance that the Lak-
ers can achieve their goal of
winning more games than
they did last season (3) and
continue to build a suc-
cessful program. Needless
to say, getting a win this
week would set them on
the right track.

You may be unaware of it, but September is Life Insur-
ance Awareness Month. And when you consider the life-
time of benefts you and your family may receive from life
insurance, you might agree that a month isnt too long
to spend on this important part of your overall fnancial
picture.
Unfortunately, too many Americans are uninsured or
under-insured. In fact, nearly a third of all consumers
think they need more life insurance, according to the 2012
Insurance Barometer Study, published by the nonproft
LIFE Foundation and LIMRA, a research and consulting
organization that specializes in insurance and fnancial
services. And it appears that one of the main reasons so
many people lack suffcient life insurance is their percep-
tion that they cant afford it. Yet, the cost for basic term life
insurance has fallen by about 50 percent over the past 10
years, according to the LIFE Foundation.
The cost fnancial, emotional and psychological of
not having adequate life insurance certainly outweighs the
expense of carrying the proper coverage. Youll hear about
many things that are designed to last a lifetime, but in
the case of life insurance, that expression is appropriate.
Consider the various times in which you should look at
the need for life insurance:
When youre married Many married couples as-
sume they wont need life insurance until they have
children. But if you or your spouse died, would the
surviving spouses income be suffcient to pay off the
mortgage, or even the rent? How about credit card bal-
ances, car loans or student loans?
When youre marriedwith young kids Now, in
addition to having to pay off the mortgage if anything
should happen to you, your surviving spouse will have
to fnd the money to educate your children and
thats a big challenge, given the rapidly escalating ex-
penses associated with college. But with suffcient life
insurance in place, your spouse can deal with the high
costs of higher education. Furthermore, if you have
permanent life insurance, such as whole life or uni-
versal life, you have the potential to build cash value,
which you may be able to tap to help pay for college
while youre still alive. (Keep in mind, though, that us-
ing some of your cash value could lower your policys
death beneft.)
When your children are grown Even with your
children grown and gone, you can beneft from life in-
surance. For example, if your spouse outlives you by a
decade or more, will he or she have enough money to
enjoy a comfortable lifestyle?
When youre retired Your need for life insurance
doesnt retire when you do. For one thing, you may
be able to access the cash value of your permanent in-
surance to help meet your retirement expenses. (Keep
in mind this may affect your death beneft.) And your
policys death beneft could help your children or
other heirs deal with estate taxes, if any exist. Further-
more, if youd like to be able to pass on something to
your children or grandchildren, life insurance may be
an ideal vehicle, because the proceeds are typically in-
come tax free and can avoid the time-consuming pro-
cess of probate.
Life Insurance Awareness Month only lasts 30 days
but, as weve seen, life insurance can offer a lifetime of
benefts. So make sure you get the coverage you need.
