Letter from Lord Hunt

to experience a great summer of sport with the London 2012 Olympics. With the games now over, the discussion has turned to legacy, and the various ways we can build on the successes we have seen. Legacy is something the Heart of England Charity feels very strongly about, as we build strong links within the local community. One way the Charity is doing this is through our sponsorship of Solihull Moors Football Club. The club has introduced a community scheme for young people, encouraging them to get into sport at an early age, for health, wellbeing and confidence building. By forging these links we are supporting schemes to benefit local people and at the same time raise awareness of the Charity and its ongoing fundraising for our local Hospitals. We hope you enjoy this edition of Charity Chat where you can read more about the sponsorship, a feature on the Ward 19 Charity Fund, and lots of other updates, news and events.

Welcome to the September edition of Charity Chat. Over the past few weeks, weve been privileged

Hospitals Benefit from Big Hearted Round Table Donation

Our Hospitals recently received a special donation of life saving equipment, which will dramatically improve the care of poorly children in the region.
Members of local Round Tables donated an impressive 9,000 to purchase three paediatric breathing ventilators which will be used on the Childrens Units and in the Childrens Emergency Departments. Paula Lane, lead nurse at Heartlands Hospital Childrens Unit, said: We are so incredibly grateful for this donation which will be used to help children breathe when they are in the high dependency unit. These machines are very important, especially in the cold winter months when we see more children being admitted suffering from respiratory problems. Greg Meadwell, Chairman of Area 35 Heart of England Round Tables, said: We are all thrilled and delighted at the success of this project and it is a real honour and a privilege to have been able to donate towards this cause which will see major benefits for children in our local hospitals. To be able to support the staff and patients directly makes it all very worthwhile. If you are interested in finding out how you can get involved in fundraising for your local Hospital, contact the Fundraising Department, and to find out more about your local Round Table, visit www.roundtable.co.uk.

Nigel Collins, Solihull Moors Chairman, said: Its an exciting development for our club, and we are honoured to partner with the Charity in this way. We feel strongly about health and wellbeing, and this link with our Solihull Hospital

Patients at Solihull Hospital were given a boost with a generous donation from Jaguar Landrover. The company donated 1,000 towards the Hospitals Art Cart, a scheme run by volunteers to provide activities and stimulation to patients across all the wards. Jan Pratt from the arts department, said: We wish to thank Jaguar Landrover for this donation. The Art Cart is such an important part of the work we do at the Hospital. The cart is taken around the wards and patients can pick out activities to do. The Cart needs ongoing upkeep and funding to keep it going which is why this donation is so important. The Art Cart goes out twice a week over every ward at Solihull Hospital. It gives out activity packs including puzzles, card making, short stories, and knitting. The arts team have given out over 7,000 packs since the scheme started in 2006.

The Ward 19 Charitable Fund

Charity appeals

Ward 19 at Heartlands Hospital treats some of the most poorly patients in the region. The specialist cancer unit treats haematological cancer, which includes serious diseases such as leukaemia. A highly skilled multidisciplinary team is on hand to provide top quality care, offering individualised treatment and support to all patients with haematological cancer. Also based at the ward is the Ward 19 Charitable Fund which was established 12 months ago by patient Dean Field. During chemotherapy treatment on the unit, Dean spent 11 weeks in isolation in a vacuum sealed room. As he recovered, Dean decided he wanted to make a difference and set up the fund to help provide for the staff, and support patients as they are treated, making their stay more comfortable. Since then, the Charitable Fund has been hard at work and raised almost 13,000 of a target of 20,000. The money raised goes towards everything from vital equipment such as blood analysers and heat pads to televisions for waiting areas and

refurbishments. The Fund and its many volunteers, made up of staff, patients and friends, has held skydives, sponsored walks, cycle rides and fun runs. Just recently a team from the ward took part in the Adidas 24 hour Thunder Run in Staffordshire and staff nurse Mary McGovern cycled 350 miles from Coventry to Ireland. Back in June a group of four Ward 19 supporters cycled across some of the toughest terrain in the West Country to raise an impressive 1,220 for the ward. As well as the fundraising, the Ward 19 Fund helps raise awareness of the Anthony Nolan Trust, encouraging members of the public to sign up to the bone marrow register. Patients on ward 19 are often in need of a bone marrow transplant, so signing up can save lives. To donate to the Ward 19 Fund, visit www.justgiving.com/ ward19charityfund. decision making rooms, and use the electronic goods to quickly and accurately make decisions about treatments. The donation will help us more effectively treat over 300 patients per week, on anything from heart disease to kidney problems. Sue, said: Its a pleasure and an honour to be able to fundraise and make such a big difference to lives of staff and patients. I have been fundraising for our local hospitals for many years and love to be able to see a project from start to finish, to be able to see what needs doing and being able to help. Many members of my family have been treated at the Hospital, so its my way to pay them back for some of the kindness they have shown.

Patients at Heartlands Hospital are set to benefit thanks to a local fundraiser who has raised a massive 12,000 for vital equipment. Sue Chippendale, from Solihull raised the impressive amount to buy TVs, laptops and audio systems, to help staff treat patients across Heartlands Hospital and Solihull Hospital more effectively.

Grateful Gary Skydives for Newborns

Proud father, Gary Brookes from Sheldon jumped out of an aeroplane at 14,000 feet to raise money for the Baby Unit where his newborn baby daughter made a miraculous recovery. Gary, 38, has already raised an impressive 1,700 with donations from friends and colleagues to provide a lifesaving baby cooling bed for Heartlands Hospital Neonatal Unit. Garys daughter Heidi was born on the 17 January but due to complications, was not able to breathe on her own and was in need of a cooling bed to prevent brain damage. Gary said, Heidi needed an emergency cooling bed to bring down her temperature and got one just in time, with half an hour to spare. We decided to fundraise for the neonatal unit, to provide another baby cooling bed. We want other babies in a similar situation to be given the best possible chance in life. The staff are absolutely wonderful, dedicated and hard working and its a pleasure to be able to help them. Heidi is now a healthy, happy, bouncing 6 month old, and we are so grateful to the staff at Heartlands who saved her life. Baby cooling beds lower a babys core temperature to a safe level, relieving pressure on the brain and preventing permanent damage. Gary plans many more similar fundraising events in the future, but you can still donate towards this appeal, just visit www.justgiving.com/ skydivefornewborns.
