COGHLAN VINEYARD & JEWELERS

For three generations the Coghlan family has earned high esteem in the fine jewelry business. In 2009, Eric and Samantha Coghlan turned their discerning eyes to the production of ultra-premium wines from the distinguished appellations of the Santa Ynez Valley. Since opening the doors of their dream storefront in Los Olivos, the Coghlans have creatively combined the two art forms, which they delight in sharing with locals and visitors alike. Enjoy their charming garden and colorful showroom filled with artisan jewelry pieces created by Samantha and Eric all the while savoring exquisite, handcrafted wines and chocolates infused with Coghlan wine. Eric and Samantha have created three tasting options for you to choose from: The first is their original lineup that includes Grenache Blanc, Pinot Noir and Bordeaux varietals. Theyve also added a Pinot-only tasting highlighting their three renowned Pinot Noirs. Last is their new chocolate and wine-paired tasting, which is a really fun way to indulge your senses. The Coghlans unique passion for gemology and oenology culminates at their shop and tasting room in downtown Los Olivos. They spent many long months creating their dream retail storefront and have not missed a note. Their eye for colorful beauty and detail is imaginative and addictive. Although they share great passion for their store and vineyards, Eric and Samanthas most important venture is their two beautiful boys, Ozzy and Cash. The family dreams that one day the boys will continue the Coghlan legacy as fourth generation jewelers and second generation winemakers. Eric and Samantha source Pinot Noir grapes from acclaimed single vineyards in the Santa Rita Hills appellation and use Bordeaux and Rhone variety grapes from their own estate, which is in the process of becoming organically certified. Their astute sourcing talents from premier wine-growing properties is the basis for their flavorful and complex wines. This last year has been a very exhilarating one for Eric and Samantha: They bottled their first Estate wines a 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon and a Cabernet Port, which is Erics creation. They are also looking forward to the release of a very limited bottling of V's Estate Cabernet. This wine is dedicated to the memory of Samantha's mother. There will only be 40 cases of this wine available. Eric and Samantha have chosen the best barrels of Cabernet from their Estate vineyard to showcase in this very significant bottle of wine. Visitors can taste wine, indulge in wine-infused truffles, browse jewelry, play bocce ball in the yard, and enjoy the nostalgic nature of the home, which boasts a rich history. Originally a Sears kit home built in the late 1890s and formerly owned by the Whitmore family (long-time prominent in the Los Olivos art community), Eric and Samantha were eager to maintain the integrity and wonderful character of the original property. The couple are constantly creating unique jewelry pieces that are on display in the house. At Coghlan, fine wine, jewelry, art and nature all contribute to the quintessential Los Olivos experience.

Perfect Pairs
Roasted Vegetable and Goat Cheese Sandwiches Paired with the 2010 Talley Vineyards Estate Pinot Noir
There is a definite chill in the air and as autumn approaches so does the anticipation of hearty dishes and bolder wines as Talley Vineyards has recently released their 2010 Pinot Noirs which are perfect for the upcoming season. Pinot Noir is one of my favorite varietals as it contains many different characteristics that make it a natural pairing for meals. This sandwich recipe is from Jill Silverman Houghs latest cookbook 100 Perfect Pairings currently sold in their Tasting Room. Rustic bread along with garden fresh roasted vegetables and a good smearing of chevre makes for a simple and delicious lunch. The 2010 Estate Pinot Noir is a medium-bodied wine that has a plush mouthfeel with expansive layers of expressive dark red fruit. The fresh acidity characteristic of the Arroyo Grande Valley shines through and balances the chevre in the sandwich making it a perfect match. This wine has a rich bouquet layered with dried strawberries and cherries with aromas of rose petals, toasted nuts and dried sage. So toast the autumn season around an open fire with homemade sandwiches and a glass of Talley Vineyards 2010 Estate Pinot Noir! Did you notice that the recipe called for Talley Farms red bell peppers and tomatoes? Talley Farms has introduced a new produce subscription program featuring weekly harvest boxes abundant with fresh picks from their gardens or neighboring farms. For $24 per week, each box contains hand-picked farm fresh produce (some organically grown) and is delivered to convenient pick up locations. For over three generations Talley Farms has been growing high quality fruits and vegetables and now they have made it easier for you and your family to eat healthier and support our community farms. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine the cheese, lemon juice, marjoram and red pepper flakes. Remove the soft bread from the bottom halves of the rolls, making a cavity in each half for the eggplant mixture. Fill the cavities with the eggplant mixture, then spread the cheese mixture on the bready top halves of the rolls. Place the top halves of the rolls on the bottom halves. COSTA DE ORO WINERY

BY Jaime leWis

COSTA DE ORO WINERY Thursday, saturday-monday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday Wine Downs with live music till 8 p.m. 1331 s. Nicholson avenue, santa maria, Ca (805) 922-1468 | www.costadeorowinery.com

If youve ever been fortunate enough to visit the Costa de Oro Winery tasting room in Santa Maria, you can understand why it was recently named the best tasting room in Northern Santa Barbara County by readers of the Santa Maria Sun. With comfortable seating, a boutique of gifts and winerelated items and an ambience that welcomes visitors to uncork a bottle and stay a while, this cozy tasting room is the perfect complement to a host of award-winning wines that rival the best in Santa Barbara County. The Burk and Espinola families are an integral part of Santa Maria farming history and chose to found Costa de Oros tasting room on the site of their familys time-honored farm stand at the intersection of Stowell Road and Highway 101. Since its first vintage in 1994, Costa de Oro (which means gold coast in Spanish) has produced some of the most elegant Pinot Noir and juiciest Chardonnay in the Santa Maria Valley but the brands reputation certainly travels farther than just the Central Coast. In fact, two of the Burks wines have been selected as private labels for world-class establishments: Pinot Noir for the James Beard Award-winner Roy Yamaguchis Roys Restaurants, and Chardonnay for the Cond Naste Top 100 Hotel, Halekulani Resort on Waikiki Beach, Oahu. Fortunately, those intent on tasting these spectacular wines need not travel so far. While the Costa de Oro tasting room is conveniently located just off the freeway, the Burk familys estate property, the Gold Coast Vineyard, is located on scenic Foxen Canyon Road, just a few miles east. Recognized for its Pinot Noir fruit, whose wines have the fragrance and fine texture reminiscent of a fine Burgundy, the Gold Coast Vineyard serves as the primary source for Costa de Oro wines, with support from a selective mix of other venerated Santa Barbara County vineyards. The focus at Costa de Oro is definitely Burgundy varietals, particularly cool-climate Santa Maria Valley Pinot Noir. Burk estimates that Pinot Noir makes up roughly 60 percent of Costa de Oros production, with Chardonnay constituting 25-30 percent, and the remainder going to a handful of other varietal wines and blends. Wine isnt the Burks only passion. In fact, when they inaugurated the winery almost 20 years ago, their goal was to incorporate as much of their other passion music as they possibly could into the local wine culture. Both Gary and Teresa are terrific musicians, on guitar and vocals, respectively, and find much of their joy in inviting musician friends to perform at Costa de Oros popular Friday Night Wine Down events. These relaxed, unpretentious evenings take place every Friday year-round from 5 to 8 p.m. Experiencing this combination of fine music, fine wines by the glass on tap and a delectable selection of cheeses, tapenades, crackers and salami, is one of the highlights of visiting the Santa Maria Valley. Fall is a busy season for any winery, but Costa de Oro will commemorate the beauty and bounty of this years harvest with an intimate winemaker dinner at Trattoria Uliveto in Orcutt on October 22. Gary and Teresa Burk invite guests to join them in savoring a meal prepared by Ulivetos Chef Alfonso Curti alongside a selection of Costa de Oros finest wines. The night promises to be both enlightening and entertaining as Gary and Teresa walk guests through their grape-growing and winemaking processes in the charming Italian-infused atmosphere of one of the areas finest local eateries. I VANT AVANT!
BY miCHael CerviN

AVANT TAPAS AND WINE open monday, Thursday, and sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (with live music from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.) Friday and saturday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. (with live music from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.) 35 industrial Way in Buellton, just off Highway 101 (805) 686-4742 | www.avantwines.com

The Santa Ynez Valley is chalk full of wine tasting rooms, but whats always been lacking has been a spot with tons of hard-to-find wines to sample, while also being an excellent restaurant. Well, thats now changed. Avant Tapas and Wine is everything Santa Barbara food and wine under one roof. Its fitting that Avant is not located in some fancy building, but rather at the end of a cul-de-sac in a business park overlooking the Santa Ynez Mountains. Part restaurant, part wine tasting room and part winemaking collaborative, its it the ideal spot for a full meal, a light snack, a taste of wine or a bottle to share. We offer 52 wines and guests can choose a taste, a half glass or a full glass, says Joe Padilla, proprietor. Many of the wines are rotated weekly so theres always something new and nearly 90 percent of all the wines served in Avant are made in the Terravant Wine Company, a custom crush facility, which you can see from the second story restaurant. In fact, Avant represents the only tasting room opportunity for many boutique wines which dont have tasting rooms. Avant promotes a local Centric attitude meaning that all wines you sample are from the Central Coast. We offer tours of the facility, winemakers visits, lots of music nights and other special events, says Padilla, a native Californian with more than 20 years of experience in both the wine and hospitality industries. But wine without food is like a day without sunshine. Avants classically trained culinary chef, Brooke Stockwell, who is a native of Santa Barbara, crafts new menu items each week (along with die-hard favorites like the Yuppie Crack which is applewood smoked bacon wrapped dates and goat cheese drizzled with balsamic reduction) using locally grown and produced foods that pair with the wines from Avants collection. The major point of differentiation about us is that we have a full restaurant for guests to enjoy while they are wine tasting. We also offer two very unique wine clubs, Padilla says. Being a wine producing facility with two dozen wineries sharing the space, winemaking happens year round but the most action can be seen September through October during crush and there are a few different options to see it all first hand. Complimentary tours are offered daily at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. and special Barrel Tasting tours are offered for $20 per person though reservations are required since youre able to sample wines not yet bottled, and, who knows, you might run into a winemaker on the production floor. Running every other Saturday now through October 27th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. is a Meet the Winemakers night where you can sample a flight of up to five wines from one Central Coast winemaker. The cost is just $10 per person and any of their wines you purchase that night are 20% off. Also on October 27th will be Avants Harvest Dinner which celebrates another concluded growing season. It will be held in the barrel warehouse and served by candle light. Check the website as more details become available. Dont dare miss Avant when you visit Santa Barbara wine country.

PEACHY CANYON WINERY

What was Good is now Great
BY raCHel eCkerT

PEACHY CANYON OLD SCHOOL HOUSE TASTING ROOM open daily 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 1480 N. Bethel road (on the corner of Highway 46 West) in Templeton, Ca 93465 (805) 239-1918 | www.peachycanyon.com
WINERY PRODUCTION FACILITY

Nacimiento lake Drive, Paso robles They are not setup for daily tours, if you are interested in how a winery production facility operates, with all the nuts and bolts, give them a call and they may be able to set up an appointment for you to visit. They can be reached at (805) 237-1577.

Peachy Canyon will again be participating this year in the Paso Robles Harvest Festival October 19-21, 2012 as well as the 22nd Annual Zinfandel Festival Jan 31-Feb 2, 2013 in san Francisco as a member of ZaP (Zinfandel advocates & Producers)

If consistency, year after year, is what you are looking for in wine, then Peachy Canyon Winery, with its exemplary track record, is where you want to start. Peachy Canyon has learned through the years what makes its customers happy, again and again. Though primarily a producer of Zins, you can also find some great Merlots, Petite Sirahs and Cabernets along with specialty wines handcrafted in small quantities. Peachy Canyon is one of a handful of remaining houses that is family owned and operated in California. Considered a medium/large Zinfandel house, it all started in 1988. The Becketts, (Doug and Nancy and their sons, Josh and Jake) have continued through some hard times but have stayed the course by staying in tune with price-to-value ratio and remembering that wines can always be better! The proof is in the wine and Peachy Canyon can now be found in almost every state as well as select international destinations. In 2010, Peachy Canyon was S.I.P. (Sustainability in Practice) certified. The idea that listening to what is going on in the vineyards and being respectful of the dirt and vines is all rather Zen, but dry farming, no waste water and hand pruning, pest management and the recognition of how all this affects the vines and the surrounding environment has allowed Peachy Canyon to bring their wines up to a whole new level. Josh Beckett, head winemaker, feels fortunate to be a part of a region that has this much passion about its wines and believes that part of the process for creating new exciting wines comes directly from inviting interns from all over the world to join Peachy Canyon. This years interns should be arriving in the next couple of months and with their arrival will come ideas and input for future vintages. Always fine-tuning their marketing, rather than over saturating and creating poorer wines in the marketplace, Peachy Canyon has consistently been able to keep good price value to quality, producing award-winning Zinfandels along with acclaimed handcrafted varietals and blends. Incredible Red is their biggest seller in volume and, made with 76 percent Zinfandel and 24 percent Petite Sirah, it is one of the best priced, medium to full-bodied Zins out there. While Ms Behave is the fastest and best seller of their smaller vintages with only 200-250 cases made each year due its time consuming delicate care, it is well worth it in the end. It is a Malbec with attitude and as Josh says, Its all about quality not quantity quality is the talent of growing grapes and making wine and Joshs talent for both is evident in these smaller vintages.

WINEMAKER PROFILE

LESLIE MEAD RENAUD

Foley Estates/Lincourt
BY miCHael CerviN

LINCOURT WINERY open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1711 alamo Pintado, just outside of solvang (805) 688-8554 | www.lincourtwines.com

Leslie Mead Renaud, winemaker for Foley Estates and Lincourt wineries in Santa Barbara, has a knack for making terrific wine. After all she worked at Clos du Bois and Sonoma Creek Winery in Northern California. Leslie then moved down the state to Santa Cruz becoming production manager at Bonny Doon Winery, then migrated further south and joined the well-regarded Talley Vineyards in San Luis Obispo. And her final move down the state was to Lincourt Winery here in Santa Barbara. If that sounds like a lot of work experience, well it is. But consider this: prior to being involved in the wine industry, she obtained her college degree from the University of Michigan and spent several years working for the Forest Service in Oregon, then relocated to California where she worked as an urban forester. It was then she began to realize the wine industrys combination of science and artistry was ideally suited to her own passions. She joined the Foley Wine Group in August of 2010, assuming her current duties as winemaker for both Lincourt Vineyards, and Foley Estate Wines. And lucky her; she has access to a lot of perfect grapes from perfect growing areas. One interesting thing about Lincourt and Foley is that we actually own a little over 25 percent of the Santa Rita Hills appellation, she says. And as most people know, this AVA has become Santa Barbaras signature wine growing region. Since we control both the farming and the winemaking, we are able to pick each vineyard block separately and keep them separate throughout the entire winemaking process. This allows us to keep things extremely focused and to really dial in each blend, she says. We also use indigenous yeast and malolactic bacteria, which allows the vineyards and the clones to really express their individuality. Her overriding philosophy is to show the best expression of each specific vineyard possible, and to have minimal intervention with the grapes during the winemaking process. To do this she spends lots of time in the vineyard throughout the year, getting to know the vines, and makes daily trips to the vineyard during harvest to determine when the fruit is at its best and ready to pick. I dont inoculate for primary or for malolactic fermentation so that the difference between individual vineyard blocks is more apparent, she notes. This should not suggest that Leslie is a non-interventionist. I believe in using as many analytical techniques along the way as possible which allows me to correct a situation before there is a problem, rather than having to take drastic steps to correct one after the fact, she adds. Our new releases are the 2010 Lincourt Syrah, a great example of cool climate Syrah featuring lots of white pepper; and our 2011 Sauvignon Blanc which is stainless-steel fermented with honeysuckle aromatics, she says. At Lincourt youll find Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc with bottle prices ranging from $18 to $50.

Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-theart stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. Stay tuned to www.figmtnbrew.com for more information, or follow them on Facebook: Figueroa Mountain Brewing for the latest news and updates.

SUMMERWOOD WINERY & INN

A welcoming landmark at the gateway to Westside Paso Robles.
BY kim mUrPHY-roDriGUes

SUMMERWOOD WINERY & INN open Daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Fall/Winter 2175 arbor rd., Paso robles (805) 227-1365 Winery l (805) 227-1111 inn www.summerwoodwine.com Facebook: summerWood Winery & inn

Located on Arbor Road at the gateway to Paso Robles wine country, the Summerwood estate is a welcoming landmark for travelers venturing west on highway 46. With its white picket fence and grand lawn peppered with native trees, the Summerwood Winery & Inn beckons guests to drop by for a relaxing stay complete with an epicurean experience paired with Summerwood wines. Owned by the Fukae family of Japan, the Summerwood estate is named after the Fukae family's eldest son, Natsuki, whose name means "Summerwood" in Japanese. Situated on 45 acres and home to the winery's Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon plantings, Summerwood Winery is focused on crafting small lots of ultra-premium wines, with an expansive Rhne and Bordeaux wine portfolio. In addition to the estate plantings, the winery enjoys long-term relationships with select vineyards in the westside Paso Robles region. Summerwood's winemaking philosophy is to nurture the fruit, with minimal irrigation and reduced crop loads in an effort to maximize varietal character. Winemaker Mauricio Marchant also practices the saigne technique, which lends to greater intensity of the fruit. Summerwood Winery's limited production wines include: the Diosa Blanc (white-Rhne blend), Marsanne, Viognier, the Diosa (red-Rhne blend), Syrah, GSM, Cabernet Sauvignon, the Sentio (red-Bordeaux blend) and a Solera style non-vintage Zinfandel Port. All wines are exclusive to the winery's tasting room, with a Private Reserve (red-Bordeaux blend) allocated annually to members. The nine-guest room Summerwood Inn is located adjacent to the winery and is known for its exceptional hospitality and concierge service. The inn has an on-going calendar of food demonstrations with their on-site Executive Chef, Kelly Wangard. Kelly specializes in farm-totable cuisine, taking advantage of the fresh local ingredients found on the Central Coast. Guests are treated daily to a gourmet breakfast, afternoon wine and appetizer reception and evening desserts. The inn is also the perfect site for destination weddings and celebrations, with expansive views of their gardens and vineyards. Discover Summerwood inviting hospitality, fresh wine country cuisine and exquisite wines.

What happens after the grapes are picked?

Since September, wineries in California and throughout the Northern Hemisphere have been engaged in their most critical tasks of the year. The decisions they make during this busy period of four to eight weeks will play an important role in how their wines will perform when released to the public a year from now, in the case of many white wines, and up to four years from now for full-bodied red wines. While temperatures rose in spring and summer, grapes became sweeter, while their acidity and tartness decreased. In August, winemakers checked the concentration of sugar in the grapes at least once a day, waiting for the optimum time to take grapes from the vines and begin the winemaking process. Picking grapes early will mean a little higher acidity in the wine and a lower alcohol level. However, if picked too soon, some unwanted flavors and off-odors could end up in the final wine. Wait too long to pull the grapes and the winemaker runs the risk of fermenting overripe grapes that leave too high a level of residual sugar in the wine, or produce too high a level of alcohol, creating an unbalanced wine. In addition to checking the sweetness in the grapes, the phenolic compounds must also be mature enough for picking. These are the chemical compounds that produce the wine components of color, tannin and flavor. Once picked, red wine grapes are separated from their stems and gently crushed in order to release the juice. For white wines, the grapes are not crushed, but pressed with the stems still intact so that the juice from the grapes can be immediately separated from contact with the skins and pumped into a fermenting vat. A fermenting tank will be filled about three-fourths to the top to allow room for carbon dioxide gas to be released from the juice. The temperature of the wine will naturally rise during fermentation and it is critical that the temperature range be controlled carefully. If left to rise too high, the wine will end up with an unpleasant, burnt flavor. Once the primary fermentation of red wine ends, and more juice is squeezed from the skins through a process called pressing, the juice will be transferred to another vat, or barrel. With each transfer like this, called racking, the wine becomes clearer. Most red wines will settle down in barrels for a period of eight to 24 months before being bottled and released to the public.

AVIL A BEACH

Avila Beach is surrounded by gentle, sloping hills, which define the harbor from the landward side. Three piers define the look from the oceanside; two are open to the public. Guests enjoy leisurely strolls out over the water, and the pier-based restaurants, which always offer fresh seasonal seafood. Avila is also an active fishing harbor with many fresh fish markets offering live crab, and fresh seafood.

Jalama Wines takes its name from the valley where I grew up, just south of Lompoc. At the end of this valleys twisty, windy road sits a magnificent beach frequented by hard-core surfers, campers and those in-the-know out to get an amazing burger at the beachside caf. Although our Cargasacchi family ranches originally only held Angus cattle and grew lima beans, we started planting grapes back in the late 90s, and now have vineyards in the Jalama Valley (Cargasacchi/ Jalama Vineyard) and the renowned Sta. Rita Hills AVA (Cargasacchi Vineyard). Their close proximity to the ocean keeps the vineyards cool throughout the long Central Coast growing season. This is ideal Pinot country. I began making wine in 2004, while I was the oenologist for Fess Parkers winery. After moving on to Rideau Vineyard, demand went far beyond what I could make on the side, so I searched out a spot close to home and started my production facility in the Wine Ghetto around two years ago. I love making wine. I tend toward small lots, with a focus on vineyard designated wines and the varietals that I love. The individual lots are about 100 cases or less, so sometimes they wines only get as far as the wine club. Though I grow and produce Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Viognier, Im passionate about bigger bodied wines as well; including Grenache, Mourvdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, and my sought after blends El Capitan and Clementina (a wonderful blend of Sauvignon Blanc/Riesling). Those grapes that I dont grow, I source from select vineyards throughout the Santa Ynez Valley. Joseph Blair Wines, also in the Wine Ghetto, is my new label. There youll find some refreshing Chenin Blanc, a Gewrztraminer with just a hint of sweet, and both a Merlot and Cabernet-based blend.

31 Days of Epicurean Adventure in Santa Barbara County

Celebration of Harvest Spotlights Locally Grown Food and Wine Culture
As part of the month long epicure sb event highlighting the locally grown and produced food culture in Santa Barbara County, the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association will be holding its 22nd annual Celebration of Harvest at Rancho Sisquoc Winery outside of Santa Maria on October 13. In addition to sipping samples of locally grown and produced wine, festival attendees will sample epicurean delights produced from local ingredients by dozens of area restaurants, caterers and food purveyors. The grapes are coming in and here we go again! jokes Joe Padilla, proprietor of Avant Tapas and Wine in Buellton. Avant features small bites of locally grown and raised food all year long in a tasting bar located at Terravant Wine Company, a custom crush wine making facility, but they will take their show on the road to show off their latest creations using local ingredients at Celebration of Harvest. Joining Avant at Celebration of Harvest will be a selection of the areas finest full course restaurants including Miro from the Bacara Resort, Root 246 at Hotel Corque in Solvang, Petros located in Fess Parkers Wine Country Inn in Los Olivos, and the Starting Gate at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott. Chef Jeff Olsson of New West Special Occasion Catering says, We wouldnt miss Celebration of Harvest! Well bring something new something fun. In addition to food created by local chefs, festival attendees can also sample the latest in varietal olive oils and infused vinegars offered by Rancho Olivos, il Fustino and Luna Olivo paired with handmade breads produced by Ethnic Breads of Santa Barbara. And illustrating the local food scene wouldnt be complete without a variety of barbecued fare including selections from the pit of the original Hitching Post in Casmalia as well as the incomparable Hitching Post II in Buellton. Were looking at a near perfect harvest season this year with plenty of reason to celebrate, says Jim Fiolek, Executive Director of the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association. What better way to celebrate all things grown and produced locally than enjoying an afternoon of sampling wine and gourmet food in the countryside where it grows. Information on epicure sb and a list of events can be found online at www.santabarbaraca.com. For a complete list of wine country events throughout the month of October as well as tickets for Celebration of Harvest, go to www.sbcountywines.com.

Wine Tasting in

LOS OLIVOS

QUP
At a recent retrospective tasting of Qup, Bob Lindquist, founder and winemaker, was overheard saying to a group of wine writers, that Qup is still cutting edge after 30 years. Qup is one of the Central Coasts iconic wine brands.

Qup: A History of Innovation and Leadership

Qup established its cutting edge style in 1982, when the winery produced the first Syrah in Santa Barbara County. Other firsts include the production of Viognier in Santa Barbara and Marsanne in California. Focusing on the great wines of Frances Rhone region, Qup produces numerous vineyard designate Syrahs, plus Rhone white varietals Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Bob also shows his winemaking diversity with Burgundian varietals, vinifying two delicious Chardonnays and a beautiful, micro production Pinot Noir. Being a true oenophile, Bob has also crafted some classic (Los Olivos Cuve) and esoteric (Bien Nacido Cuve) blends. Qup is recognized as one of the standards for cool climate Syrah, and has helped establish Santa Barbara County as a great wine region of California, long before Sideways! Qup has been named one of the Top 100 Wineries in America eight of the last nine years, and Bob was named One of the Worlds 50 Most Influential Winemakers. Recent accolades include 2009 Qup Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley being named Wine of the Week by Irene Virbila of the Los Angeles Times July 2012, and Eric Asimov of the New York Times recognized Qup Santa Barbara County

Marsanne 2011 as one of the best American wines under $20 today. Bob Lindquist is one of the unsung heroes of California wine, wrote Asimov. Qup was an early proponent of Biodynamic farming (Organic farming, but also taking into account the cycles of the earth with the goal of creating rich vibrant growing conditions). Committed to growing the best grapes possible, he and his wife Louisa developed the Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard in the Edna Valley in 2002 which is Demeter certified. They have followed Biodynamic practices since its inception and the result is a healthy, environmentally diverse vineyard, that is producing spectacular wines, including a special reserve Syrah called Sonnies, named for Bobs mother.

annual Open House on Sunday, October 14th. One of only two days the winery is open to the public, this open house is not to be missed. Visitors will be able to taste over 50 wines produced under the wineries many labels, enjoy lunch made by Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat founder), and find great bargains, all for only $20. Contact the Qup winery for more information, (805) 937-9801.

Qup Tasting Room in Los Olivos

A visit to the Qup Tasting Room in Los Olivos quickly reveals that winemaking runs in the Lindquist Family. The Qup lineup includes Verdad and Ethan wines, made by Bobs wife Louisa and his son Ethan respectively. Verdad focuses on traditional Spanish varietals of Albario and Tempranillo. Ethans offerings show a continued commitment to beautiful, well balanced wines that run in the family. Both wine labels can be enjoyed at the Qup tasting room which is located in Los Olivos at 2963 Grand Ave. A rotating selection of eight wines is always featured, focusing on small production single vineyard bottlings, and bottles specifically produced for the tasting room and wine club. Grapes Varietals such as Chenin Blanc and Mourvedre were produced in tiny quantities to celebrate the 30th anniversary and are available while supplies last. On the weekends be sure to stop in and try the reserve tastings which feature unique reserve bottling and library selections. Whether a novice or a just a lover of aged wines, the reserve tasting provides a unique opportunity to taste Santa Barbara history.

30th Anniversary Celebration

This year, Qup is celebrating its 30th vintage, culminating with the release of its 30th Anniversary Syrah. The blend will be formally released during Qups Fall Open House in October. The 30th Anniversary Syrah is sourced from Bien Nacidos X block, one of the oldest blocks on the vineyard, and has been crafted in an old world style. This wine will be bottled and available ($100 per bottle) in October exclusively at the Qup Tasting Room in Los Olivos.

Qup Open House and Special Events

SOLVANG
Lucas & Lewellen Takes the Triple Crown with Brut
It can certainly be said that Champagne has a way of making people happy, or that happy people tend to drink Champagne. Whichever comes first, the folks at Lucas & Lewellen are happy that their Brut Sparkling Wine earned three separate Gold Medal and Best of Class distinctions this year at the Central Coast Wine Competition, the Orange County Wine Competition and the California State Fair Wine Competition. In addition to the Best of Class Gold, the Brut garnered a 94 point score. The California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition is the oldest and most prestigious wine competition in North America. This year, 2,890 wine entries were received from 688 participating wineries. Seventy-two judges awarded 74 Double Gold and 268 Gold medals. Other Lucas & Lewellen labels were recognized in these recent competitions including the Gold Medal wins of 2009 High 9 Pinot Noir, 2009 Syrah and 2009 Valley View Cabernet and the 2010 Toccata Malvasia Bianca, but the Triple Crown glory of the 2008 Lucas & Lewellen Sparkling Wine will be hard to top! Judging panels for some of this years wine competitions were composed of regional and nationally known sommeliers, winemakers and wine writers including; Doug Frost (Master Sommelier and Master of Wine), Madeline Triffon (sommelier), Ellen Landis (sommelier), Traci Dutton (sommelier), Dan Berger (wine writer) and Michael Cervin (wine writer). According to Lucas & Lewellen owner and veteran viticulturist, Louis Lucas, We are extremely honored to receive these 3 very prestigious Best of Class awards. Our Brut is a traditional blend of 50% Pinot Noir and 50% Chardonnay grapes grown in our Los Alamos Vineyards. We have been producing sparkling wine since 2000. Our Los Alamos and Santa Maria vineyards provide the cool climate necessary to produce these exceptional wine grapes. The 2011 vintage, which will be pink, was made from 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay grapes. This sparkling will be released in March 2013. I believe a sparkling wine can be enjoyed on any occasion, including lunch and dinner! Owner Royce Lewellen added, These outstanding awards signify the continuing success of Lucas & Lewellens excellence in product quality and winemaking capability. At our house, this is the go to wine for entertaining guests. We love it and so do our visiting friends. The Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards Tasting Room is located at 1645 Copenhagen Drive in Solvang and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. open later on weekends.
