THE HUDSON VALLEY

From its source in Lake Tear of the Clouds, the Hudson gathers tributaries and volume until a mighty river flows past the towers of Manhattan to its union with the sea. From that September day in 1609 when Hendrick Hudson sailed into New York Harbor, events, traditions and deathless legends have flowed out of the valley of the great river to merge into and profoundly affect the pattern of American life. Here Robert Fulton and Chancellor Livingston conquered the problems of navigation by steam. Here Benedict Arnold achieved a tragic immortality. Here the folk tales of the valley flowered into the stories of Rip Van Winkle and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow. As the river and the centuries flowed on, the people of the valley clothed their lives in outermost garments of wood; of brick; of stone. From Fort Crailo, built in 1642, where "YANKEE DOODLE" was written, through the Manor Houses of the Dutch Patroons, the Georgian Houses of Colonial Days to the Federal and Greek Revival houses of the Post-Revolutionary period and the unique Hudson River Bracketed Houses of the Romantic Revival, THESE OLD STRUCTURES ARE VISIBLE, TANGIBLE LINKS WITH GREAT EVENTS AND THE ORIGINS OF AMERICAN TRADITIONS. When The Hudson River Conservation Society, Inc. conceived the project of compiling a permanent record of the buildings and the life of earlier days in the valley, it is but natural that it should have turned to Harold Donaldson Eberlein and Cortlandt Van Dyke Hubbard. Mr. Eberlein's patient research and literary skill had already been combined with the sensitive photography of Mr. Hubbard in such fine books as "PORTRAIT OF A COLONIAL CITY" and "COLONIAL INTERIORS." This collaboration has now resulted in a book which is a masterpiece of its kindequally valuable to students of history, to architects and to the innumerable lovers of the great valley.
