THE DRY ICE BLASTING TECHNOLOGY

How it works The dry ice blasting uses small pellets of dry ice sprayed through a jet nozzle with compressed air to remove paints, oil, grease, dirt, ink, adhesives and other materials you want to remove. The frigid temperature of the dry ice against the dirty surface causes adhesion to shrink and loosen from the surface. On immediate impact, the dry ice evaporates into environmentally safe and innocuous CO 2 gas. The kinetic energy ( E = mv ) The energy associated to the mass and to the speed is transferred to the surface to be cleaned / coating removal. This is the fundamental way to work either with this dry ice method or with sand / water etc. Thermal differential When the dry ice pellets cold touch the surface, a small thermic difference occurs between the coating material, the contaminant and the substrate. This provokes cracks and the detaching facilitating the removal process. Micro Explosion When the dry ice touches the surface and it transforms into innocuous CO 2 gas, this tends to invade the cracks and the pores penetrating into the coating / contaminant. Then it warms up and it expands rapidly and it makes the coating / contaminant detaching from the substrate, favouring still further the coating removal or the cleaning process. Sublimation With an inferior pressure at 5.2 bar, the solid CO2 transforms directly in gaseous state without turning into the Liquid state. But if the blasting pressure is superior at 5.2 bar ( 5.2 x 14.7 = 76.44 psi ), the CO 2 in the sublimation state will show some characteristics of the Liquid CO 2 while the same reaches its "triple point". Has been proved that the Liquid CO 2 is a strong organic solvent so it is reasonable to suppose that this solvent action can be present when the blasting pressure is superior at 5.2 bar.

DRY ICE
What is dry ice? The blasting agent which consists of dry ice is the solid form of CO2 ( carbon dioxide) at a temperature of - 78.5C. CO2 is a natural medium, which has an inherent thermal energy ready to be tapped. At atmospheric pressure, solid CO2 sublimates directly to vapour without a liquid phase. This unique property means that the dry ice blast medium simply disappears, leaving only the original contaminant to be disposed of. In addition, cleaning in water sensitive areas (e.g. in the proximity of electrical cabinets) is now possible. The grade of carbon dioxide used in blasting is the same as that used in the food and beverage industry and has been specifically approved by the FDA, the EPA and the USDA. The carbon dioxide is an odourless, non-toxic gas which is used in the drinks industry as an additive in beer and mineral water. It is also used in the food industry for cooling meat and sausage etc. Carbon dioxide is a non-poisonous, liquefied gas that is both inexpensive and easily stored at work sites. Of equal importance, it is nonconductive and non-flammable. CO2 is a natural by-product of several industrial manufacturing processes such as fermentation and petrochemical refining. The CO2 given off by the above production processes is captured and stored without losses until needed. When the CO2 is returned to the atmosphere during the blasting process, no new CO 2 is produced. Instead, only the original CO2 by-product is released.
How is dry ice produced? A regular supply of Liquid Carbon dioxide from a storage tank is expanded at low pressure and form the dry ice snow (at a temperature of 78,.5C ) which is then pressed through a die by a single acting horizontal piston producing dry ice pellets in different dimension. For the successful operation of the dry ice machine it is essential to use moisture free Liquid CO2.

ELECTRICAL APPLICATIONS
The M.E.C. Microblast machines are units for cleaning equipments, machineries, plants, surfaces and so on by using pellets of solid CO2 (dry ice), blasted with an appropriate gun made on this purpose. The users and maintenance guide supplied with the machine reports the technical data and all the using precaution; furthermore it gives to the users different examples about what to clean. Especially the guide explains that the machine can also be used on electrical boxes under tension, but it specifies the right limits for this use, that means that it's possible to work on electrical boxes under tension until 1000 Volt (light tension) but not over. During the cleaning of boxes with electrical tension, the operator, with all the necessary protections and instructions, will not touch the electrical components and the CO2 isnt absolutely an element of electrical transmission, and so for evident practical reasons the workings distances place the operator in a very safe area. The Italian CEI rules, according to the European rules for the safety of the electrical plants, permit to work on electrical box with light tension, as for CEI 11/37 and 11/47 procedures, but even if they don't specify the cleaning of electrical box and in particular the CO 2 using, without requesting any particular certification on the machines employed, or on the operators, but only requesting the necessary good sense and the use of individual protections. The laws and the Italian rules forbid works on and near machines and parts with tension over 1000 Volt. The European CE plate on the Microblast machine and the conformity declaration on the users and maintenance guide grant that the machines follow the requisitions of DPR 459/96, 89/392 CEE; 91/368 CEE, 93/68 CEE. These rules regulate the constructions of machines, the maintenance, the purpose for which they are on the market, so that the safety and the health of the operators are granted, respecting the limits and for the purposes he can work.

MICROBLAST - Blaster
DUAL HOSE BLASTING SYSTEM
The dual-hose system uses the flu dynamic principle named "Venturi system". The dried compressed air flows inside a hose and it reaches the gun: inside this gun a "Venturi" nozzle, creates before, through a constriction, an increase of the air speed, to leave it expand after. This expansion creates a vacuum and through the second hose dry ice pellets are sucked. Pellets and compressed air are mixed and accelerated by the blasting barrel against the object to clean. With the double-hose system the proportion between the nozzle (of the Venturi system) and the blasting barrel is very precise and with a very low variance to get an optimal flu dynamic performance. In particular the counter pressures which can be generated inside the barrel, for different construction reasons or of compressed air supply, can reduce or cancel the Venturi effect and in this way not aspirating pellets anymore or blasting them at lower speeds.

MICROBLAST - Blaster
SINGLE HOSE BLASTING SYSTEM
The single hose system uses a mechanical mixer, like a niches or holes dispenser. Pellets come in from the upper part of the distributor and this one, by turning, takes them to its lower part where the compressed air which will take them out to the blasting gun is injected. During this course, pellets and compressed air are mixed together inside the single-hose, and then they are accelerated inside the blasting barrel against the object to clean. In the single hose system, since it is a pressure pushing system for the pellets, the flu dynamic nozzle/barrel balance is very stable and also the work efficiency will take advantage, since any possible counter pressures created inside different blasting barrels don't modify the blasting speed and for this reason, with the single hose system it is possible to use all kind of barrels, also the most particular and special ones and also with higher pressures of compressed air supply.

COMPRESSED AIR TREATMENT MTA 42 Air dryer

In order to obtain the best efficiency of the M.E.C. dry ice blasting machines the quality of the compressed air is very important. The supply compressed air must be clean, oil free, dry and free of foreign bodies. If the compressed air does not meet with the requirements, we recommend to use the M.E.C. appropriate compressed air treatment unit to clean the compressed air.

Most industrial facility have a compressed air supply which guarantee pressure of approximately 6-8bar and air rate 2 5-7m /min, sufficient for most applications. The air dryer group MTA 42 is used when the motor compressor is in use or where the compressed air of the establishment is not purified by H2O and by oil. PELLETTIZER maker of dry ice pellets P40 MC

The P40 MC Pelletizer is designed in particular to produce small quantity of dry ice pellets with an High Density from the Liquid Carbon Dioxide at a very low temperature. In order to produce the snow and the gas you need a regular supply of Liquid CO2 from a storage tank which is fed at a very low pressure. The snow is then compressed through an extrusion plate from an interactive single horizontal piston , mechanically lead. The gas transferred outside the machine is then release in the atmosphere. The M.E.C. P40 MC is a unit which works without using any oil. It is made with special light alloy lead by an electric engine. All parts are designed in particular to work on a laboratory table. This mechanic system is suitable for using with interchangeable die plate in order to produce different dry ice shapes. In order to obtain an excellent functioning, it is advisable to use the Liquid CO2 without moisture. The Carbon dioxide is a melted and non toxic gas easy to store in working spaces. It is electrically non conductive and it is non inflammable. The necessary equipments for this kind of plants are generally the following: a Liquid CO2 refrigerated tank A pelletizer and a Liquid CO2 line for the connection.

The pelletizer P100 and produces dry ice pellets with high quality. The production of dry ice pellets occurs with the transformation of 'liquid carbon dioxide (CO2 L) in the solid. A regular supply of liquid CO2 from a storage tank is fed at low pressure to produce dry ice and gas. The snow is then compressed through an extruder die by a single horizontal piston mechanically driven. This fully automated system is a 'unit is ideal for producing large quantities of dry ice pellets of about 100 kg / h. ENGINEERED SYSTEMS BLAST ROOM

The Blast Room is a cabin for manual operation of Dry Ice Blasting completed with automatic dust remover. This blast room has been designed for dry ice cleaning applications that require continuous and uninterrupted operations. This room is a quiet, soundproof enclosure with advances system to collect the contaminant being removed. -

AUTOMATIC PLANTS MB/FXX - fully automatic system for the dry ice cleaning on the production line
The MB/FXX is an autonomous distribution system which can be integrated on a robotic production line. It can be controlled directly from a field bus (Profibus ...) or using pre-programmed recipes.

SERVICES AND SOLUTIONS OFFERED BY M.E.C.

In order to satisfy all customer needs, M.E.C. offers different services and dry ice blasting solutions.
Dry Ice production
M.E.C. produces and delivers dry ice high density in different shapes: Micro pellets 1,7mm Pellets da 3mm Cylinders 16mm Tiles 120 x 120 sp 10 60 Tiles 150 x 210 sp 10 60 Blocks 500gr and 750gr
Dry Ice supply CO2 Service
M.E.C. provides delivery of the Dry Ice within 24h also during Christmas time and mid August holiday. M.E.C. does not effectuate holiday closure. Furthermore M.E.C. coordinates delivery schedules in order to satisfy any customer needs. The CO2 cleaning service with dry ice offered by M.E.C. is handled either at the customer ' s site or in our cleaning facility . All onsite cleaning services are handled including after hours and weekends by factory trained technicians able to handle any customer requests and any applications. Furthermore M.E.C. offers an In house CO2 cleaning service at our facility fully equipped to handle a range of cleaning and stripping applications.
Rental
M.E.C. offers a rentals services, providing the customer with the right quantity of dry ice necessary for the use of M.E.C. Blasters. For the quotation contact M.E.C.
Assistance
M.E.C. puts at the customer's disposal the ability of its professionals for maintenance works on M.E.C. plants and cryogenic machines. M.E.C. professionals are able to: Handle complex installations in order to maximise the performance of the machines. Manage regularly scheduled maintenance programs to keep your machine working at maximum efficiency Answer questions and provide support when customer need it - Provide maintenance and replacements when needed - Provide temporary replacement machines while your system is being repaired at our factory.
Training
M.E.C. offers a Training useful for the correct use of the machines. The training can be handle in - house or to the customer.
Maintenance Programs
M.E.C. offers to the customers a regularly scheduled maintenance programs. If during the maintenance it would be necessary to replace a parts , M.E.C. guarantees the replacement as soon as possible at an additional cost.
Spare parts and accessories
M.E.C. warehouse is complete with all accessories and spare parts in order to guarantee the delivery of them, with express courier in 24 48h. Abroad, in some Countries as for example the Middle East the delivery is guaranteed in 72h. M.E.C. professionals are able to handle the installation of spare parts when requested by the customer.

WARRANTY INFORMATION
The warranty lasts for shipment of them. twelve months for M.E.C. manufactured equipments and it commences on the Date of
The warranty gives the possibility to change all the parts with manufacturing or material defects without any additional cost, but it doesnt give the possibility to have a refund for any work breakages or for any other damages. From the warranty are excluded all the travelling expenses necessary to repair the machine at the customers workshop or the transport expenses necessary to send the machine to the manufacturer's workshop and to send it back. The warranty finishes if the customer makes some changes without the manufacturer's permission and if the customer does not respect the terms of payment. Any variation of the terms of payment must be authorized in written by M.E.C. . Any claim must be made in writing to M.E.C. within 7 days after the defect is discovered. If the claim is not made within that period, this warranty will be deemed or released therefore. This warranty shall not apply and M.E.C. shall neither be responsible nor liable for: a. b. c. d. e. Consequential, collateral or special losses, damages or the non suitability of the equipments for the purpose intended Equipment conditions caused by abnormal conditions of use, accident, neglect of the equipment, improver storage or damages resulting during shipment. Deviation from the equipment' s prescribed maintenance programs, replacement parts Labour charges, loss or damage resulting from improper operation, maintenance or repairs made by person (s) other than MEC authorized service representative. AFTER SALES SUPPORT M.E.C. Srl provides after sales support to our customers by qualified technically trained staff able to handle any kind of maintenance of our Dry Ice Blasting products. At our factory based in Caltignaga (NO) Italy, we provide also the training for the correct usage of our machines anytime the customer needs and for free.
