LESSON # 3 Im Thankful

Lesson Focus: The Lords Cupper is a time to say Thank you to God. Bible Story: The Ten Lepers (Luke 17:11-19) Memory verse: (NLT) 1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, This cup
is the new covenant between God and his peoplean agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.

Get em Going Activity choices 1. Teach the children to say thank you in different languages. For added interest, say the words as the children to guess what language you are using. You can also challenge the children to match a language with its corresponding country flag, such as English with the British flag, or Spanish with the Mexican flag. Show a video of the stampede scene from the Lion King. Discuss the similarities and differences between the clip and Jesus sacrifice. Say: Mufasa saved Simba from being trampled by a sea of wildebeests. The father gave his life for his son. In the same way, Jesus gave his life for us. He rescued us from sin and death. WE remember Jesus sacrifice and are thankful for his gift to us every time we share the Lords Supper. Read 1 John 3:16 Teach the children to say thank you in sign language. Play a mystery game with a nicely wrapped gift. You may want to buy a prize that everyone can share after the game. Tell the children you have a prize. How they win it is a secret, but everyone can play. Walk among the children, handing the prize to individual children one at a time. The first child who says, Thank you gets to keep the prize. Talk about presents they have received and whether they have remembered to say thank you.

Get Em Hearing Activity choices 1. 2. Create a modern-day dramatic version of the story of the Ten Lepers called The Ten Leopards (see curriculum ideas for script) Tell or read the story of the Ten Lepers from Luke 17:11-19 using story figures, puppet or flannel figures. Say we want to be like the man at the end of this story. WE want to kneel at Jesus feet and say, Thank you. Every time people eat the Lords Supper together, they say thank you to Jesus for dying on the cross and rising again. We are grateful because Jesus beat death and made a way for us to be forever friends with God. Week after Week, we come back with an attitude of gratitude as we eat bread and drink juice tougher. Enlarge a picture of todays story. Post the picture at the front of the group. As you read each verse of the story aloud, invite one child to color or paint part of the picture. Ask another child to color a different section of the picture for the next verse. By the end of the story, the picture should be completely colored.

Get Em Thinking

Activity choices 1. Use these questions to reflect on the story and discuss -imagine you are one of the ten lepers. What thoughts are going through your mind when you see Jesus approaching? What is the first thing you do when you discover you are healed? -tell us about a time you needed assistance and someone helped you. How did you feel when that person came to your rescue? How did you say thank you to that person. -how does Jesus help or rescue us? -What are some ways the church family says thank you to Jesus -how can we show God that we are thankful s we sit together to take communion -share one thing that you are thankful for this morning.

Get Em Living. Activity Choices 1. Write an acrostic poem using the letters in the words Thank You. Ask the children to think about why they are thankful to God as they compose their poems. Older children may wish to write lines of poetry, while younger children may simply write single words. 2. Make a giant thank you card for Jesus or give a thank you card to someone special in the church. Such as a pastor or custodian. For an added dimension, make pop-up cards. 3. Thankfulness journal: invite the children to take time each evening to record expressions of gratitude 4. Invite the children to think of ways to express their gratitude at home this week. Possibilities include making someone elses bed in the morning, or giving someone a big hug. 5. Creative prayers; invite children to sit in a circle. Choose one or more categories such as animals, people we love, or a color. Have the children thank god for all the things they can think of in that category. 6. Sing a worship song that has the words thank you in it.
