vii)

Duty on capacity is also called a) c) outlet duty nominal duty b) d) capacity factor full supply coefficient.

viii)

In a field under furrow irrigation, "Furrows" are referred to represent a) b) c) d) narrow ditches which carry irrigation water ridges on which crops are grown both (a) and (b) neither (a) nor (b).

ix)

The (delta) for crop having quantity duty of D and base period of B days is given by a) c) = 864 B/D = 100/D b) d) = 864 B/D = 1000/D.

xii)

For a catchment with an area of 360 km

the equilibrium discharge of an

S-curve obtained by 4-hour unit hydrograph summation is in m 3/s. a) c) 250 90 10 4 b) d) GROUP B ( Short Answer Type Questions ) Answer any three of the following. 2. 3. 3 5 = 15 90 none of these.

Write the rain gauge densities as per WMO and according to IS : 4987 1968. Wheat is to be grown in a field having a field capacity equal to 27% and the permanent wilting point is 13%. Find the storage capacity in 80 cm depth of the soil, if the dry unit weight of the soil is 15 gm/cc. If irrigation water is to be supplied when the average soil moisture falls to 18%, find the water depth required to be supplied to the field if the field application efficiency is 80%. What is the amount of water needed at the canal outlet, if the water loss in the water courses and the field channel is 15% of the outlet discharge ?

4. 5.

Discuss the isohyetal method for estimating the average rainfall over catchments. The following are the rates of rainfall for successive 20 min period of a 140 min storm : 25, 35, 100, 75, 525, 125, 50 cm/hr. Taking the value of index as cm/hr, 42, find out the value of W index and the runoff coefficient.

6. 7.

Explain the methods for determining the Zero discharges. A one-day rainfall of 15 cm at a place X was found to have a return period of 100 years. Calculate the probability that one-day rainfall of this or larger magnitude i) ii) will not occur at X during next 50 years will occur 3 times in next 50 years.

6 GROUP C ( Long Answer Type Questions ) Answer any three questions. 8. a) 3 15 = 45

Write a short note on Border flooding. Determine the time required to irrigate a strip of land of 004 hectares in area from a tube well with a discharge of 002 cumecs. The infiltration capacity of the soil may be taken as 5 cm/hr and the average depth of flow on the field as 10 cm. Also determine the maximum area that can be irrigated from this tube well.

b) 9.

What are the advantages of the Sprinkler irrigation method ?

10 + 5

Determine the ordinates of 12-hour unit hydrograph by S-curve method. 10.

A stream of 130 l/s was diverted from a canal and 100 l/s were delivered to the field. An area of 16 hectares was irrigated in 8 hrs. The effective depth of root zone was 17 m. The run off loss in the field was 420 cubic meter. The depth of water penetration varied linearly from 17 m at the head end of the field to 11 m at the tail end. Available moisture holding capacity of the soil is 20 cm per metre depth of the soil. It is required to determine the water conveyance efficiency, water application efficiency, water storage efficiency and water distribution efficiency. Irrigation was started at a moisture extraction level of 50% of the available moisture. 15
