We are already seeing significant changes

These children are worthy of our utmost respect for getting on with life in spite of the difficulties and challenges they face in their personal situations and in society. And whilst our aim is to see the next generation off the streets we are already seeing a change. One of our older boys is being sponsored to go to a prestigious private school to do his Alevels a remarkable achievement. He took a hold of what we were offering and studied incredibly hard in spite of a desperate family situation. His mum does not read or write and this is paving the way for others to see that they can break out of the poverty cycle and experience lasting change. We are starting to see the huge impact of sponsorship for individual components for the children in terms of their outcome. Speaking English is a ticket out of poverty as people can then get jobs in the tourist and hotel industry and business. An initiative to learn good spoken English is also starting to reap dividends.

Child Action Lanka works to assist and transform the lives of disadvantaged children in Sri Lanka. We work with street children and underprivileged children in Kandy, Kelaniya and Nuwera Eliya with further centres starting up this year around the Island. We run day centres for children from babies to eighteen year olds and also work with families and the wider community. We fund their books, bags, uniforms, shoes to enable them to go to school (schooling is free in Sri Lanka but these things are not). We aim to be holistic in our approach the children get healthy meals, emotional support and counselling, education and tuition and a safe place to have fun. We also offer vocational training and business /micro credit support, working with the families and wider community. Our aim is to see the next generation off the streets, to help children reach their full potential and break the cycle of poverty.
