INTRODUCTION Midwifery term is used to describe the activities of health care providers who are experts in the women health care including prenatal care to expectant mother, attending at birth and providing post partum care to mother and her infant. Practitioners of midwifery are known as midwifes. Independent midwifery practice enable registered nurse midwives to utilize their knowledge skills, judgment and authority in the provision of midwifery practice package and primary womens health services while maintaining accountability for the management of patient care in accordance with midwifery standards laid down by the midwifery or nursing council of their country. DEFINITION Independent nurse practitioner is a skilled health care provider who utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessment differential diagnosis and the presenting of pharmacological treatment in the direct management of actual and chronic illness and disease. - ANA 1996

HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF INDEPENDENT NURSE PRACTITIONER: INP role originated as one strategy to increase access to primary care. The following are brief historical background of INP. The first successful programme to prepare INPs was developed at the university of Colorado in 1965 (Pediatric nurse practitioner). During 1970-1971 federal legislation recommended certificate programme for nurse to deliver primary health care. Gradually certificate programme shifted to masters degree. In response to health care reform in 1990s many INPs 3 programme were developed to meet the demand of primary care services. By 1994, 248 programmes centres were developed for INP in US. In 1995, 49000 nurses were employed as INPs. American academy of nurse practitioner in 1993 developed standerd and guidelines for practice of INPs which are still followed. Today 200 universities and colleges are offering INP programme all over the world. 70,000 nurses are working as INP in US.

BASIC REQUIREMENT FOR INDEPENDENT NURSE PRACTITIONER: Becoming INP in specialized area is one of the important challenges as it needs specialized qualification. The basic requirement are mentioned below: Basic nursing education. Registered nursing. Advance nursing certificate (master degree in any specialization) Collaboration with any hospital/ agencies for referral and reimbursement

EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION AND CERTIFICATIONS: The nurse who has an advanced education and is graduate of a nurse practitioner programme. There are 2 types of courses for INP:a) Short term programme- aware a certificate b) Long term programme- leading to a masters programme. Certificate is achieved via written exams requirement vary from licensure as a registered nurse to master degree in nursing up to 3 year experience in clinical specialty. PLACEMENT OF INDEPENDENT NURSE PRACTITIONER: With intense preparation, they are placed in a variety of setting like community clinics. Community health nurse practitioner Community health specialist. Family health specialist. Rural health specialist. School health nurse. Occupational health nurse in industry. Women health practitioner. Mental health practitioner. Mental health practitioner. Acute care nurse practitioner. Gerontological nurse practitioner.
