FACILITIES AVAILABLE High Speed Towing Tank with Model Making Facility: This is a unique facility in the country

comprising a 500 X 8 X 8 m size tank. The high-speed carriage provided in the tank can tow a model at a maximum speed of 20 m/sec. The tank is provided with a wave generating machine and a beach system on either end and a vertical planar motion mechanism to study the manoeuvring characteristics of submerged bodies. It has an attached Workshop for fabrication of models using FRP composites. Shock & Vibration Testing Facility: For studying noise, vibration and shock response of Naval platforms, a shock tank with 15 X 12 X 10 m size has been constructed. Shock test studies on various equipment weighing upto 2.2 tonnes for their shock with standablitiy are carried out by firing suitable under water explosive to generate shock level of 250 'g'. The Centre is also equipped with light duty shock testing machine and a vibration shaker to test equipment weighing upto 600 kg and 200 kg, respectively. entral Workshop Facility: Established for fabrication of precision proto-type models, components and sub-systems. Critical components are produced for the development of underwater weapons, etc. A metrology section carries out the calibration of instruments and the inspection of the components and parts fabricated at the Workshop. It also undertakes demands of other DRDO Labs and provides assistance on critical machining to local industries. Acoustic Tank Facility: This Facility has been functioning since 1978. The tank with 8 X 8 X 8 m size is equipped with all instruments necessary for carrying out underwater acoustic studies. Calibration of ship sonar testing equipment, and calibration and measurement of source level for simulated targets for Naval exercise are regularly carried out. A number of Public Sector Undertakings like BDL and Keltron are regularly using the Facility for calibration of underwater acoustic sensors and devices. Astravahini Astravahini, the Torpedo Launch and Recovery Vessel, has been extensively used for carrying out trails on all weapons and equipment being developed at NSTL. Rubber Technology Facility This Facility has been created for developing rubber components used in various underwater systems. It comprises equipment for rubber mixing, molding and testing of various rubber components for use in underwater systems Metrology Facility Created for determining the mechanical properties of materials and also for dimensional checking of the finished components. | Historical Background | Profile of the Director | Awards & Rcognitions | Technologies Available | | Conferences/Seminors | Programmes Conducted | Interaction with Others | Facilities Available | | Areas of Work | Achievements | Contact Us | BACK TO MAIN PAGE |

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

To cater to the needs of the Indian Navy, the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) was established on 20 August 1969 under DRDO inside the Andhra University Campus at Visakhapatnam. It was shifted in 1975 to its present location and was housed in temporary sheds. The Laboratory is now located in 196 acres of land. Apart from the main building constructed in 1978, facilities like the Central Workshop, Torpedoe Engineering Block, High Speed Towing Tank, Computer Centre, Shock & Vibration Centre and a huge residential complex have come up during the 80s.

Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism

Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, has acquired a state-of-the-art Large Amplitude Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism (LAHPMM) to augment the High Speed Towing Tank (HSTT) for carrying out planar motion studies of manoeuvring characteristics, and control effectiveness of ships at the surface and submerged body models. In the absence of a complete and inexpensive Sea-keeping and Manoeuvring Basin (SMB) , the LAHPMM and the already existingVertical Planar Motion Mechanism (VPMM) procured for conducting tests on submerged bodies in the vertical plane could be used to carry out some of the manoeuvrability tests. LAHPMM measures the various forces and moments acting on the model during tests to determine the complete set of hydrodynamic coefficients for formulating mathematical models which in turn can be used for computer simulation of trajectories under various manoeuvers.

The salient features of LAHPMM are:

An integrated towing mechanism to tow models weighing up to 3 tonnes, 4- 7m length and upto 7.5 ml/ s (max) speed Capable of imparting sway, yaw, surge, roll, and heel motions to the model Frequency of oscillation: 0.01 to 0.3Hz Amplitude of oscillation (max) : 1000 mm (Sway); 500 mm (Surge); 30 Roll, Yaw and Drift Instrumentation: 3-component balance; rudder and propulsion dynamometer; PC-based data acquisition and control system.
