Hello everyone, It was great having a joint meeting last week with Queanbeyan West Club thanks for coming guys! I decided to leave By RIP Sakuji Tanaka Rotary Leader, September 2012, Vol. 3, Issue 2
I became a Rotarian almost by accident. I had just moved from Tokyo to the city of Yashio, Japan, where I did not know many people. I did not know anything about Rotary when I was invited to join Yashios new Rotary club. But I respected the person who invited me, so I accepted. In those days, the idea of service was very new in Japan. For the first two years, we did not do very much. I went to my meetings, listened to presentations, ate lunch and went home. I paid my dues and I gave to the Rotary Foundation. But that was all. After two years, I decided to leave. But the charter president talked to me and convinced me that I should stay. And I have always been grateful to him for preventing me from making what would have been a terrible mistake. Every year, many new members join Rotary clubs. But just as many leave. Our job is to find the members who are thinking of leaving, before they make their decision. We must ask the questions: why did you come to Rotary? What are your goals, and how can you meet them? What do we need to be doing differently in order to keep the members that we have? Bringing new members into Rotary is wonderful, and very important. But it is every bit as important to make sure that our new members find satisfaction in their service, that they achieve their Rotary goals, and that they remain Rotarians for many years.

Volunteers Required
This October marks breast cancer awareness month with Pink Ribbon Day falling on Monday 22 October. Pink Ribbon Day aims to help raise awareness about breast cancer, as well as raise funds for research, early prevention and patient support programs. Between Thursday 18 October and Monday 22 October we have 25 merchandise stalls running at most shopping centres accross the ACT and we desperately need volunteers to help out with these stalls. Volunteering at stalls is easy - 2 stalls being held @ Riverside & Karabar All you need to do is look after a table of our merchandise and serve customers who walk by. You won't be by yourself - there are two people on each shift and each shift runs for two hours. If you are able to help out we would love to hear from you! Many thanks, Kathleen Bleakley Regional Programs Coordinator Southern Region kathleenb@nswcc.org.au

Hi my name is Jess Main and I'm the immediate Past President of the Rotaract Club of Canberra. I have decided to help RAWCS with their Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM) program and help rid East Timor of Malaria. Around the world, over 600,000 people die from Malaria due to lack of sanitation, the majority of these deaths can be avoided by using simple mosquito nets. Unfortunately, a lot of people in third world countries cannot afford these nets and therefore are exposed to the mosquito borne disease. RAWCS obtains donations and gathers volunteers to buy the required nets, distribute them, and educate the people on their purpose. On the 21st October for 3 weeks, I will be travelling to Manatuto, East Timor to assist with the distribution of Malaria nets. This project provides every person in Manatuto with a long-lasting, insecticide impregnated mosquito net and education about the importance of using a Malaria net. As part of the trip we will also be cleaning up villages and eliminating possible mosquito breeding sites. I am really looking forward to this exciting but challenging experience. I have taken a large amount of my personal annual leave at DEEWR to help out and as there is quite a large cost involved, I was hoping for some assistance from you with the costs of participating in this program. These costs include: Total Flights $ 1300 Vaccinations $ 100 Accommodation $ 500 4 Wheel Drive Hire $ 400 Daily Allowance x 21 $ 420 $ 2720

If you would like to help me deliver these life-saving Malaria nets in East Timor please complete the online form found at http://www.rawcs.com.au/donations.htm I am hoping to raise at least 50% of the cost of the trip, therefore any contribution would be greatly appreciated! The Project Name is Rotarians Against Malaria East Timor and the Project Number is 143/201011. In the comments please write 'To assist Jessica Mains costs for the RAM project in East Timor'. You will be sent details on how to bank the amount into the account and sent a tax deductible receipt. To find out more information about RAM go to: www.rotary9600.org/ram/. Or like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ram.australia. Thank you very much, Jess Main 0403 516 116

If you can help at the Registration Desk let Conference Secretary Clare Hack know phone (H)4474 4191 or email hack.clare@gmail.com Look up the District website for the guest speaker program and additional information about the conference it is not to be missed.

There seems to be some concern about what to wear to the Back to the Beach dinner to be held at the Soldiers Club on Saturday 27 October. The Conference Committee is trying to keep the conference reasonably casual for the whole weekend and that would include the dinners on both Friday and Saturday night. People are encouraged to come dressed as they feel comfortable reminding everyone that there is a dress code for access to the Soldiers Club so no bikinis, Speedos (thank heavens!) or thongs. Some will wear beach themed gear while others will wear neat casual gear whatever you are comfortable in and please dont feel obliged to dress up to match the theme if you dont wish to. The Committee wants everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy the night.
