THE BUILDING WIRING SYSTEM

BUILDING WIRING SYSTEM the system and arrangement of wires and electrical devices that distributes electricity to the various appliances and receptacles found in a building. ELEMENTS OF THE BUILDING WIRING SYSTEM 1. Service 2. Service Equipment 3. Feeders 4. Panel Board 5. Branch Circuit

SERVICE - conductors and equipment used for delivery of electric energy from the electric utility wiring to the house electrical system. It is composed of: the service drop wire and the service entrance wire or conductor.

The service drop wire is portion that connects the electric utility supply to the point of attachment in the building; while the service entrance wire or conductor runs from the point of attachment in the building to the service equipment. SERVICE EQUIPMENT - constitutes the main control and means of cut off for the electric supply to the building. Located near the point of entrance of the service conductors, it may or may not include the electric meter. As a means of cut off, it can include any of the following: main circuit breaker, disconnection switch or combination of meter socket & circuit breaker.

FEEDERS conductors that bring electric current to the main panel board or the secondary panel boards.

BRANCH CIRCUITS the final connection to an electric device or a group of electric devices. The different types of branch circuits are: 1. Lighting circuit branch circuit that supplies power to lighting loads. 2. General purpose circuit supplies power to most receptacle and convenience outlets. 3. Small appliance circuit supplies power to receptacle and convenience outlets located in kitchens, pantries and similar areas to which small appliances such as toasters, rice cookers and food processors are to be connected. 4. Individual branch circuit supplies power to only one equipment or appliance, such as air conditioner, water heater, pump, refrigerator, etc. ELECTRIC LOAD Electric loads in a building or facility can be categorized as follows: 1. Lighting 2. Miscellaneous power 3. HVAC 4. Plumbing & sanitary equipment 5. Vertical transport equipment 6. Kitchen equipment 7. Special equipment Lighting loads required to run lights in a building, such as ceiling lamps, desk lamps & wall lamps. Miscellaneous power includes convenience outlets and small motors. HVAC includes air conditioning units (ACUs), fuel pumps, boiler motors, condensate pumps, heaters, blower motors, exhaust fans & refrigeration compressors Plumbing & Sanitary Equipment includes all loads associated with water and sanitary systems, such as water pumps, air compressors, vacuum pumps, sump pumps, well pumps, water heaters and display fountain pumps. Vertical Transportation Equipment includes elevators, escalators and dumbwaiters. Kitchen Equipment includes dishwashers, freezers, ovens, cooking equipment, etc.

Special Equipment includes such items as laboratory equipment, display window lighting, flood lighting, etc.
