B. Indications and Contraindications Indications: intra abdominal infections, lower respiratory tract infections, Contraindicated in: Hypersensitivity

C. Side effects and Adverse Reactions CNS: Seizures, dizziness, headache EENT: Tearing (Topical) GI: Abdominal pain, anorexia, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, furry tongue, glossitis, unpleasant taste, vomiting DERM: Rashes: Urticaria, HEMAT: leukopenia

D. Drug interactions: Drug drug: Cimetidine may decrease the metabolism of metronidazole, Phenobarbital, and rifampin, Increase metabolism and may decrease effectiveness. Metronidazole increases the effects of phenytoin lithium and warfarin. Disulfiram like reaction may occur with alcohol ingestion. May cause acute psychosis and confusion with disulfiram

Increase risk of leukopenia with fluoroucil or azathioprine.

E. Nursing Considerations Assess patient for infection Assess for neurologic status Monitor intake and output and daily weight especially for patients on sodium restrictions.

Health Teachings Instruct patients to take medication exactly as directed with evenly spaced times between doses Caution patient to avoid intake of alcoholic beverages May cause dizziness or light-headedness. Caution patient to avoid driving or other activity requiring alertness Inform patient that medication may cause an unpleasant metallic taste. Inhibits reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the CNS. Therapeutic Effects: Decreased Pain Generic Name: Tramadol Dosage: 50 mg

B. Indications and Contraindications

Indications: Moderate to moderately severe pain. Contraindicated in: Hypersensitivity, cross-sensitivity with opiods may occur, patient who are accutely intoxicated with alcohol, sedative, hypnotics, centrally acting analgesics, opiod analgesics or psychotropic agents, patients who are physically dependent on opiod analgesics (may precipaitate withdrawal)

CNS: Seizures, dizziness, headache, somnolence, anxiety, cns stimulation, confusion, coordination disturbances, euphoria, malaise, nervousness, sleep disorder, weakness EENT: Visual disturbance CV: Vasodilation GI: Constipation, nausea, abdominal pain, anorexia, diarrhea, dry mouth dyspepsia, flatulence, vomiting GU: Menopausal symptoms, urinary retention/frequency DERM: Pruritus, sweating NEURO: Hypertonia MISC: Physical dependence, psychological dependence, tolerance

Drug interactions: Drug to drug: increase risk of CNS, depression when used concurrently with other CNS depressants including alcohol anti histamine, sedative/hypnotics, opioid analgesics, anesthetics, or psychotropic agents. Nursing Considerations Asses type, location and intensity of pain before 2 - 3 hrs. and after administration Assess blood pressure and respiratory rate before and periodically during administration Assess bowel function routinely Assess previous analgesics history Monitor patient for seizures F. Health Teachings Instruct Patient on how and when to ask for medication May cause dizziness and drowsiness. Caution patient to avoid draining of other activities requiring alertness.
