At IESE, students learn through the case study method, which gives them the unique opportunity to view business issues from many angles. After individual preparation, students work in teams to analyze, discuss and propose solutions to hundreds of different business problems drawn from real-life scenarios. The approach opens up a forum where students discover new perspectives and broaden their understanding of key issues. Most importantly, this intense and challenging method means that students learn to make business decisions and take action by thinking, arguing and defending their interpretations and recommendations against a multitude of equally plausible solutions. Cased-Based Learning Is Global: the cases you study are taken from real business scenarios in multiple geographic areas and industries Strategic: the decisions you make are based on in-depth analysis Extensive: you are exposed to business at all levels, from multinational to small family owned business

The first year of the MBA program is divided into four sections, each comprising of approximately 70 students. Experience: Bilingual Experience

By doing an MBA at IESE, you will have the option (not mandatory) to acquire another language - Spanish. The multilingual campus, Spanish language instruction and daily life in Barcelona provide multiple avenues for achieving fluency in Spanish by the end of the program. Spanish is the fourth most widely spoken language in the world, making it one of the most important languages for business. A business education in English and Spanish equips students with two of the most important languages for conducting business on an international level. Previous knowledge of Spanish is not required. All students will follow the first MBA year curriculum in English, while simultaneously participating in the Business Spanish Program, which starts off with an intensive format in September. Those who have proven to have demonstrated an adequate level of Spanish proficiency and have successfully completed two second-year classes in Spanish will qualify to receive the MBA Bilingual Degree. Business Spanish Program The Business Spanish Program is designed specifically for IESE MBA students. Its objective is to ensure that participants can fluently engage in various business situations with a special emphasis on verbal communication. The program is designed according to the criteria established by the CEFR (The Council of Europes Common European Framework of Reference Learning and Training). For first year MBA Students, Spanish instruction begins in September with intensive classes. The program is open to students without previous Spanish language knowledge, as well as to those with an advanced level. It lasts throughout the MBA program, with a duration that depends on the level of each student. At the end of the program, students are eligible to obtain a diploma in Business Spanish. Certification gives students another tool to add to their professional portfolio which demonstrates a global outlook. Also, students who pass these exams can choose electives from the Spanish teaching unit during the second year of the MBA. MBA Bilingual Degree To obtain the bilingual MBA degree students should: Pass the Spanish language examination (DIEN) (this exam is required only for non-native Spanish speakers). Take a minimum of two credits offered in Spanish and obtain at least a B in each. Native Spanish speaker students willing to have the Bilingual MBA Degree have to take a minimum of two credits offered in Spanish during the MBA and obtain at least a "B" grade in each, as well.

The condition of native Spanish speakers will be evaluated by the Director of the Spanish Department, in case of doubt regarding the level of knowledge of the language. If these conditions have not been met, the student will be awarded the "MBA Degree," as opposed to the "Bilingual MBA Degree." Corporate Internships Marketing Sales Design and implementation of a nationwide distribution and sales network for a consumer goods product in Africa Definition of positioning strategy and re-design of the sales process Creation of a business plan for a low-fare airline Feasibility study and action plan for the launch of a new product Analysis of a company's strategic positioning within four different market segments Market study on an industrial sector in Egypt and Algeria to identify growth opportunities

General Management Development of a methodology to supervise the implementation of company strategy at division level Feasibility study on the relocation of several production facilities to low-cost countries

International Exchange Program

Each year, more than 85 IESE MBA students are selected on a competitive basis to spend the first or second term of the second year at one of the schools listed below. The chance to supplement our MBA program in Barcelona with a semester at a top business school in another country provides an additional challenge, as well as valuable academic and networking opportunities.

At the University of Michigan, I had the quintessential American university experience. The academics were enriched by student-led initiatives and the strong entrepreneurial culture that permeates the campus. It was a great chance to network and be a part of a group of warm and welcoming students. Shilpika Gautam (MBA 10) Shilpika earned an engineering degree at Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology and worked at Tata Consultancy Services before starting her MBA. After graduation, she secured a position in global markets at Deutsche Banks London offices.

International Elective Courses

IESE MBA students in their second year, are offered to do part of the MBA program at our New York City Campus or at Sao Paulo ISE Campus, spread over a one or two week International Module that takes place at the beginning of their fourth term Students also have the opportunity to take up to four half credit courses, including company visits and networking events that are both very interesting and beneficial. This overall great experience is becoming increasingly popular each year.

New York Elective

Week 1

Internet Enabling Strategies In this course we explore a number of industries that have been transformed by advances in ICT: for example, cloud computing and web 2.0. Our goal is to extract lessons that will guide our understanding of how technology innovation changes the competitive landscape. Taking advantage of the modules NYC location, the course will include visits to companies that are currently experiencing the social and technological changes discussed in class.

Wall Street We will also revisit Wall Streets history. Nowadays Wall Street stands for the epicenter of financial markets and financial services spread over New York. Some of the city's success and previous most spectacular collapses are identified with this little street at the tip of Manhattan, most recently being the 2008 credit crisis that swept away some of its oldest and best known institutions.

Week 2 Responsible Investment Goes to Wall Street This course will explore how financial institutions (asset owners, asset managers, banks, private equity) are integrating ESG factors in the financial investment process. We will learn how this phenomenon emerged, and where it is likely to go. We will discuss different options to organize responsible investment activities, and how to research ESG factors. We will also discuss the role and practices of engagement with corporations on ESG factors.

Media and Entertainment Industries We will look at the media and entertainment industries and how they share a series of peculiar features. Essentially, an intangible output is produced, such as a music recording, which can be distributed in a variety of forms, based on an input which is extremely idiosyncratic: the

creative output of a person or group of persons such as, a singer or a band. Finally, we will explore how recent technological innovation has changed the balance of power between the various players and led various industry segments to re-invent their business model.

Sao Paulo Elective

Week 1 Doing Business in Latin-America Brazil underwent more than half a century of populist and military government until 1985, when the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. It continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Exploiting vast natural resources and a large labor pool, it is currently South America's leading economic power and a regional leader, one of the first in the area to begin an economic recovery. However, highly unequal income distribution and crime remain pressing problems. In January 2010, Brazil assumed a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2010-11 term.

Marketing in Latin-America Since the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis and later recession in most of the developed world, many of these Latin American economies have drawn to themselves the attention of both practitioners and academics. A series of acronyms like BRICs and CIVETs have arisen and are being increasingly studied and cited. The purpose of this course is to go beyond the purely circumstantial flavor of the month approach, and discuss and understand what some of the underlying issues and peculiarities of the practice of marketing in Latin America are, and the criteria with which companies address them.

Week 2 International Finance International competition has become one of the major challenges that most companies have to face. Competing internationally requires firms to take advantage of all opportunities and be aware of possible threats of the international financial markets. Applications of finance perspectives in key business decisions such as international investment, financing, and contracting; as well as the key interactions of finance and competitive strategy in a global context are the obvious and long established necessity for firms who decide to do business abroad, but it is also an obligation for companies facing global competition on their domestic market.

Cross-Cultural Management In the past, the international arena used to be exclusively the domain of large multinational companies, however nowadays even many smaller companies operate across geographic, economic, political and cultural boundaries. In this context, it has been common for managers to coordinate activities with colleagues in subsidiaries situated in several countries, travel intensively to visit business partners in different continents, and negotiate contracts with suppliers or clients of different cultural backgrounds. This course is designed to provide focused learning on key areas of cross-cultural management and to enhance intercultural effectiveness of business leaders today.

Faculty With a student/faculty ratio of 4:1, students and professors are able to develop close and enduring relationships. Professors have open-door policies to encourage students to come to their offices to talk about their classes, assignments, career goals and personal challenges.

Our faculty of 96 full-time and 45 part-time professors all hold Ph.D.s from the world's most prestigious universities. They are multicultural, multilingual and internationally acclaimed experts for their research on current business issues. Moreover, they are successful business people themselves, many with their own consulting firms operating in the real world of international business.

In addition to our professors, associate faculty (including visiting professors) bring specialized knowledge and industry experience into the classroom. IESE's faculty is organized in academic departments, according to their areas of expertise, and the areas in which they teach and lead research. The 11 departments focus on businesses and their environment from a general management perspective. In this section, you will find information on the departments, research areas and faculty members. In the "Knowledge and Research" section, you will find documents produced by professors (cases, books, etc), as well as information about IESE's Research Centers.

Accounting and Control IESE's accounting department prepares future managers to take successful operative and strategic business decisions based on the effective measurement and communication of business activities. Among the key areas the department focuses upon in its teaching and research are methods of identification, measurement, analysis and interpretation, communication and distribution of relevant economic information. * Dept. Entrepreneurship

IESEs Entrepreneurship Department focuses on new venture creation, as well as intrapreneurship and entrepreneurial management within existing organizations. Entrepreneurial skills development is central to IESEs MBA program. Reflecting this, more than a third of IESEs alumni have participated in the creation of a company sometime during their careers.

Among its many activities, the department leads the core second-year course on entrepreneurship, taught since 1974, in which students develop business plans. The best projects are presented at the New Business Forum, which is held annually at IESE. A venture capital fund, created in 1999, provides seed money for selected student entrepreneurs.

Student Profile

Student Activities

Having the right job search skills is key to achieving your career objectives. MBA Career Services works with each student to first clarify these objectives and then achieve them. The Career Services will be a partner in your career search and will bring to bear all the resources available at IESE to make your search both efficient and successful.

One-on-One Counseling Throughout the MBA program, trained and experienced members of our Career Services department provide students with tailored counseling on career planning strategies and their job searches.

At a first stage, this involves helping students understand themselves, defining their goals and setting a career strategy. Later stages center more on market information and advice. Career Services also facilitates interaction between students and a select number of expert alumni and faculty, who act as mentors for students in need of in-depth information on specific sectors.

Career Workshop The Career Workshop is a two-day event which takes place before the start of the MBA program. This event is only a first step on the long road to finding one's ideal career and is designed to: * Initiate self-assessment * Set the milestones for students managing their career search during the program * Help students build an effective CV and Cover Letter * Understand the importance of Networking and an overview of the IESE Network: faculty, alumni & the student body

* Provide an overall view of MBA Career Services - the team, the services and resources available to students and the calendar of activities over the next two years for both career development and recruitment.

Mock Interviews During the first term of the MBA program, Mock Interviews are organized with interviewers from invited companies and tailor-made to students' interviewing requests. The event combines an interview technique workshop with the mock interviews themselves. It is especially useful for students looking to change careers, as participants can undertake real-life interviews in a new sector and obtain useful feedback for improving their interview skills.

Workshops Workshops take place throughout the MBA program and center on improving issues such as setting an effective career strategy, building an effective CV or cover letter, and improving presentation or salary negotiation skills.

Value-Added Presentations Value-Added Presentations take place every week. Speakers and alumni are invited to talk about a variety of topics, from Careers in different sectors or job functions, Strategies for Career Changers, Work permits for Spain or the UK, Tax Issues, and more.

Club Organized Activities Career Services team works closely with IESE's professional clubs to organize recruiting activities and career development initiatives. In this way, the team is able to provide additional support for job searches to students who have a specific career focus.

Recruitment MBA Career Services organizes a series of on-campus events to help students connect directly with companies that best fit with their professional objectives.

Career Forum

The Career Forum is MBA Career Services' most important recruiting event. Held in the fall, the event is a catalyst for roughly 40 percent of placements of second-year students. With some of the world's most important companies taking part, the Career Forum is an excellent opportunity for first year students to network and identify potential companies for both corporate internships and future full-time positions.

The forum features first-round interviews with second year students, company presentations and a career fair - one of the largest of its kind in Europe.

Career Days

Once a month during the second term, the Career Services team organizes Career Days. At these events, representatives from a leading company give a presentation and discuss opportunities for both full-time jobs and summer internships. Recent participants include Johnson & Johnson, Leroy Merlin, HSBC BANK, Reckitt Benckiser, E-Bay, Mittal Steel, Amadeus, Nike and Bertelsmann.

Company Presentations

Many companies come throughout the academic year to make presentations. Companies who have visited IESE's campus recently include WPP, IFC (International Finance Corporation), GE, Kimberly Clarke, Philip Morris, Airbus, Telefnica Mviles, and Deutsche Post AG. Events Calendar
