IEEE Seminar Series

About the Seminars On Thursday, November 8, 2012, the IEEE North Jersey Section in association with Tektronix is offering two Seminars. These Seminars are designed to provide marketable skills to current Engineers, unemployed Engineers, Students and Teachers. Learn new skills or enhance your existing skills. The skills learned at these Seminars will make you more valuable to your current employer, or help you land a job. Lectures and Hands-On Labs provided. Two different Seminars will be provided in one day; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You must preregister for either or both to attend. Fundamentals of Mixed Domain Analysis: Testing Your Wireless Design Thursday, November 8, 2012 9:00 am to 12:00 pm 8:00 am Registration and Breakfast Are you one of the 38% of design engineers currently working with a wireless-enabled design? With the proliferation of wireless connectivity, todays designs are forcing engineers to not only verify operation of an integrated RF radio, but to troubleshoot problems across the time and frequency domains. Traditionally, an oscilloscope and spectrum analyzer would have been needed. Synchronizing these two instruments to answer even simple questions was a daunting, if not impossible, task. Enter the Mixed Domain Oscilloscope, providing Engineers with the functionality to analyze time and frequency domains with one instrument. Join our experts for a hands-on seminar to learn the latest techniques for debugging wireless embedded systems, using the worlds first and only Mixed Domain Oscilloscope. Learn: RF fundamentals Basics of spectral analysis, including markers and spectrogram displays Techniques for analyzing time-varying and wideband RF signals Tools for time-correlated capture of analog, digital and RF signals Tips for efficiently working in both the time and frequency domains Real-world troubleshooting with an exercise to determine the settling time of a PLL after a SPI serial bus command to change frequency Debugging Your Digital Design Fast and Efficiently Thursday, November 8, 2012 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm 1:00 pm Registration and Lunch Chances are your design includes serial and parallel buses to route data throughout your circuit. Validating that the correct data packets are being transmitted and received on those buses is challenging enough, but what about when things go wrong? Finding the root cause of your problem among thousands of data packets is exhausting without the right tools and techniques. Join experts for a hands-on seminar to learn new oscilloscope techniques to not only validate your design, but to quickly troubleshoot problems.

Learn:

Common signal integrity problems and their root causes Techniques for properly triggering an oscilloscope to isolate infrequent events Review of common serial buses: I2C, SPI, CAN, LIN, RS-232, USB2.0, Ethernet Tools to trigger decode and search on serial and parallel buses Tips for making accurate and repeatable measurements Over 2.5 hours of hands-on labs using Tektronix MSO2000 Series Mixed Signal Oscilloscopes Real-world troubleshooting techniques for seamless implementation in your work lab Instant feedback and solutions by experts

About the Speakers Alan Wolke is an RF Applications Engineer with Tektronix, and has been with the company since 2006, supporting Real-Time Spectrum Analyzers and their applications. Alan has a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from New Jersey Institute of Technology, and has spent the majority of his career prior to Tektronix in the fiber optic, datacom and telecom fields, as well as the hard disk drive component field. Frank Selvaggio is a Senior Applications Engineer at Tektronix, with responsibility for supporting customers in Oscilloscope, Logic analyzer, and Signal Source applications. His current focus is on High Speed Data Links, Digital Analysis (Bus and microprocessor debug & validation), TDNA Link Analysis (Impedance, S-Parameters and Eye Simulation) and Optical data links. He specializes in all standards compliance testing including DDR, SATA/SAS, USB, HDMI, Ethernet and PCI Express. Along with testing signal integrity methodologies for Jitter, BER, Link Analysis, Power supply and Protocol analysis. During the past 23 years at Tektronix, Frank has helped thousands of companies in solving their design problems in a variety of applications. All Welcome! Members and non-members welcome.
