Review Procedure of Education Programmes

The Bachelor's Degree programme on Electrical Engineering, Electromechanics and Electrical Technologies has been launched into the education processes of the State Engineering University of Armenia since the academic year of 2007/2008. programme took place in the academic year of 2010/2011. The first graduation of the

A given programme is based on

previously implemented Bachelors Degree programmes on Electromechanics, Electrical and Electronic Apparatus, Electrical Transportation, Design and Service of Household Machines and Devices, Electric Drive and Automation of Industrial Installations and Technological Complexes, Electric Insulation, Cable and Capacitor Equipment. Necessity to have a joined Bachelor's Degree programme on Electrical Engineering, Electromechanics and Electrical Technologies is stipulated by a demand to prepare multifunctional engineers dealing with exploitation, design and maintenance of electrical products, electromechanical devices and systems having functional importance. The process of review of the Bachelor's Degree programme on Electrical Engineering, Electromechanics and Electrical Technologies has been planned and executed by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The Head of Chair of Electrical Machines and Apparatus implementing this programme initiated surveys among the potential graduates (the 4th year students) of a given programme and the graduates of the abovementioned six programmes in order to find out the students opinion on the quality of the core courses content and the overall quality of their presentations. To fulfill the review processes, a work group has been formed which included the head of the group M. Baghdasaryan and other members: V. Hambaryan, E. Martikyan and L. Atabekyan, the professors having appropriate professional, teaching and work experience and holding academic degrees. By the Chair's request and under his direct supervision the work group has accomplished the following: Review of the programme; The programme's self-analysis;

Change and update of the programme and its modules; Amendment of appropriate documents based on annual monitoring reports; external expert evaluation reports; analysis of survey results conducted among students, graduates and employers.

As a result of the review, the programme group prepared the programme's self-analysis report which reflects the following aspects of the programme: Academic standards; The quality and opportunities of teaching/learning processes; Improvement measures; The programmes viability and the labour market demand. The following documents are attached to the report: description of the reviewed programme and changes made in some of its modules; results of satisfaction surveys conducted among students, graduates and employers within the past three years and the external experts report participated in monitoring. Below are presented the brief summaries of the work groups self-analysis preliminary report's components: Research on the programme's graduates employment based on their specialties; surveys on the programme satisfaction and suggestions related to the programme changes (Appendix 1); Consultations with employers (both current and potential) regarding the necessary competencies of graduates and suggestions related to the programme changes (Appendix 2); Evaluation of the programmes demand; dynamics and tendencies of the applicants stream and the application process; employers evaluation of a potential demand (Appendix 3); Analysis of a progress of the programmes students (their elimination and advancement); Comparative analysis of the existing programme and similar international programmes, selection of model examples for a further use in the processes of reforms (formulation,

content and structure of goals, problems and outcomes), finding out and evaluation of the programmes strengths and weaknesses (SWOT analysis of the programme) (Appendix 4); To define (re-define) the reviewed programmes goal and problems based on the data collected during the previous stages (Appendix 5); Based on the defined goals and problems, to formulate the programmes outcomes in the form of graduates general and professional competences (Appendix 6); To analyse the examined programme's structure and content from the perspective of its correspondence to outcomes results. To separate core courses and modules and to create a matrix of their correspondence to the programme's outcomes (competences) and to find out discrepancies (Appendix 7); To evaluate the programme's existing resource basis, teaching methods and technologies and to develop proposals for their improvement; According to the formulated goals and outcomes, to set tasks regarding changes of the programmes structure and content (the programmes reorganization) (Appendix 8). The work group has presented also the list of documents attached to the self-analysis report: The conclusion regarding revision of the programme with corresponding remarks and suggestions for improvement; The revised curriculum and syllabi of the programme; their outcomes and expected competences; Justification of resources (teaching staff, teaching methodical, technical, information and other ones) necessary for revision of the programme; Reports on the results of the programmes annual monitoring; surveys of students, graduates and employers regarding the programme satisfaction; Conclusion of the external expertise; the external experts reports participated in the annual monitoring;

Conclusions regarding the external evaluation of the programme (outside the University).

Discussing the self-analysis report and the attached documents prepared by the work group, during its session #2 dated 15.09.2011 the Chair of Electrical Machines and Apparatus has affirmed the following: to ensure the programmes reconfirmation for being continued during the next phase. The Chairs Decision, the self-report and the package of attached documents were submitted by the Head of Chair to the Quality Assurance Committee of the Faculty (from now on, the Committee). Based on analysis of the documents regarding the programme review the Draft Report of the Committee has been prepared according to the appropriate form (Appendix 9) and submitted for a discussion during the Committee's session. As a result of discussions the Committee proposed that the programme should be reconfirmed and should be continued during the next (five-years) phase. After the Faculty Councils approval suggestion of the Committee was accepted as a basis for the programmes future status. The Faculty Councils Decision, the programmes self-evaluation report, the Committees report and the entire package of documents regarding the programme review were submitted by the Dean of Faculty to the Teaching-Methodological Department. The Department submitted the verified package of documents regarding the programme review for endorsement of the Deputy Rector who is coordinating the processes. After getting the endorsement and through the Scientific Councils Committee the Department presented this question for a review of the Scientific Council of SEUA. After discussing the proposal of the Council of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering regarding the results of review of the Bachelors Degree programme on Electrical Engineering, Electromechanics and Electrical Technologies and reconfirmation of the programme and discussing the attached conclusions the Scientific Council of SEUA officially resolved regarding the future status of the Bachelor's Degree programme on Electrical Engineering, Electromechanics and Electrical Technologies. The Armenian version contains the full Appendices, and the English version presents brief versions of the Appendices.
