Longtime manager Joe Matz has been promoted to Vice President and General Manager over Butte, Colusa, Yuba and Sutter Counties effective October 1. Carl Peters, Operations Manager, has been promoted to site manager overseeing Butte and Colusa Counties. Carl is ready and well positioned for this opportunity to expand his role and responsibilities said Joe from his office. I leave the City of Oroville and all communities we service in very good hands. Joe meanwhile will not be absent from the community but rather will split his time between all four counties focusing on expanding services and relationships. Recology is well known for its support of community groups, civic organizations and for its volunteerism. Community involvement is something Joe expects and demands from his staff. There is no question without the support and commitment of folks like Carl and all our staff, I couldnt be successful doing what I do said Joe. Working for people like Joe and a company like Recology that asks every month...what did you do for your communities last month? Its inspiring and rewarding. Said Carl from his new office. Community, service, involvement and value...these are the things Joe expected and we as a team will do our best to grow this philosophy and exceed everyones expectations every day. Recology is a local, employee-owned company headquartered in Oroville. They are a sustainability services company offering recycling, solid waste and recovery solutions for residents and businesses throughout the area and has been part of the community for nearly 40 years.

News Release from YMCA

Come hear past president of the Butte County Historical Society, Dave Browns presentation of his recently published book, The Oroville-Quincy Ridge Route: Development, Eclipse and Renewal of a Transportation Artery. The book documents the history and evolution of one of the early routes into northern California, used originally by pioneers crossing the Sierras and as a means for miners to access the rich gold bearing gravels of the Feather River canyons. Daves research follows the story of the road through the decades as its commercial use declined and gave way to neglect, and illustrates its revival in recent years as recreational potential of the region has been realized and developed. The program will be held at the Ehmann Home, 1480 Lincoln Street, in Oroville, at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 21st. Refreshments will be served, and all are welcome.

Chicos Sounds of the Valley Chorus issues an invitation to all women to bring the joy of singing back into their lives. If you like to sing in the shower or the car, come sing with us, says director Lu Fox. Our members come from all walks of life with one thing in common---their love of singing! Join the chorus, join the fun! Chorus rehearsals, always open to guests, will be held in Chico, at Marigold Elementary Schools Multi-Purpose Room, Wednesdays at 7:00. In addition, an A Cappella Boot-camp will begin October 3 for interested women and new members.

Chorus Membership Drive And An A Cappella Boot Camp

Sounds of the Valley Chorus was founded in 1974, as part of Sweet Adelines International, a non-profit music education association for women whose goal is to perpetuate the art form of a cappella harmony, barbershop style. Barbershop singing can become a lifestyle. The music is uplifting, the performing is exciting, but forming a sisterhood of singers who become like family is what keeps us coming again and again. We sing for joy! For more information, contact Sharon Smith at 342-3838 or sssharonsmith@hotmail.com

Tips for Protecting Your Deck
(StatePoint) Many people build their decks to improve the beauty of their backyards while adding value to their home. Wood decks are an investment and as such, should be protected. However, the National Association of Homebuilders estimates that there are currently 20 million unprotected decks in the United States. Staining is not only an easy solution to protecting your investment, it is also the best way to protect and preserve the wood. But before beginning a staining project, homeowners and contractors should understand the process involves more than just a can and a brush.

Tips for Protecting Your Deck Prepare Your Home to Withstand Any Weather

While there are many DIY-ers and pros out there that have experience with woodcare projects, I still find it surprising how unnecessarily intimidating wood staining can be, says Paul DiMeo, television DIY star. Having a core set of wood care standards provides professionals, DIY-ers, and homeowners with the correct information they need to properly understand the ins-and-outs of staining. DiMeo, along with other industry experts, is a member of the Cabot Woodcare Council Advisory Board. The advisory board is a group of industry experts who have leveraged their collective and individual expertise to develop the standards of wood care, to help solve staining problems and keep projects moving as efficiently as possible. Before beginning a staining project, the Council reminds everyone to keep the following in mind: continued on page 2

continued from page 1 When choosing a stain, consider the more opaque a stain, the more durability it will have. Before beginning a staining project, thoroughly assess your wood for the presence of mold, mildew, and signs of weathering. When cleaning the deck, youll want to use a gentle cleanser formulated for wood. Regular soap and water will leave behind residue which will reduce penetration. The ideal temperature to stain your

deck is between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. It is also important to choose a day when no rain is expected for 24 hours. Whether you are a first-timer at staining or a professional who has been doing it for 20 years, comprehensive staining resources that can benefit anyone can be found at, www.CabotWoodcareCouncil.com. By staining your deck properly, you can protect your investment for years to come.

Prepare Your Home to Withstand Any Weather

(StatePoint) The weather these days seems to be more volatile than ever -swinging from record-setting heat waves to deep freezes, seemingly from one day to the next. With the weather more varied and unpredictable, homeowners nationwide have learned lessons from the past year and are taking steps to ensure their houses can efficiently withstand whatever Mother Nature dishes out. Its all about keeping homes sealed tightly, so water and wind cant leak in and tempered air doesnt leak out -causing heating and cooling bills to rise. Beware of Foundation Cracks Water is the enemy of your homes foundation. A change in moisture content of the soil around your home allows water to put pressure on the foundation, causing cracks and leaks. Dry weather can cause the soil to shrink, while wet periods can cause it to soften. Poor drainage from your roof or improper ground slope around your home can funnel water against the foundation. Make sure gutters are clean and that downspouts extend away from your home. Check that the soil, grass or pavement properly slopes away from your foundation. Insulate Effectively Upgrading a homes insulation is an effective, easy way to increase energy efficiency while decreasing heating costs. The attic is a great start, but to achieve maximum efficiencies, dont overlook areas such as basements and rim joists. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates homeowners could save an average of at least $250 yearly in heating costs by insulating basement walls. And by insulating crawl spaces and rim joists, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates homeowners can save up to 20 percent on energy bills. Opting for stone wool insulation, which is made from a combination of natural basalt rock and recycled slag, may provide greater benefits than traditional fiberglass insulation. One such thermal insulation is Roxul ComfortBatt, a fire resistant, water repellant and sound absorbent insulation that is well-suited for use in exterior walls, attics, crawlspaces and basements. It also has a unique fiber composition and density that provides for an optimal fit between studs, joists, around ductwork, electrical boxes and plumbing. As another consideration for insulating, Roxul also offers SafenSound, another stone wool insulation product wellsuited for soundproofing interior walls and ceilings between rooms. Its unique stone wool composition reduces sound transmissions by trapping sound waves and vibrations. Before undertaking a home insulation project, do-it-yourselfers can visit www.diywithroxul.com, to view free how-to videos detailing different insulation projects. Inspect Your Roof Nothing can ruin a home faster than a leaky roof. Once yearly, check for signs of damage, such as sagging, aging, cracking, curling, tears or missing shingles. Pay particular attention to areas obscured by shade or vegetation. Replace shingles that are lifting up or that have rot or heavy moss. Also inspect gutters, vents, overhangs and flashing. Repairs should be made as soon as you see a small problem, before it becomes a larger one.

Help Prevent Break-Ins

(NAPSI)A few simple steps before you go away for the weekend or the season can help your home avoid a breakin: Hold your mail and stop newspaper delivery. Have a family member or trusted neighbor keep eyes on your property. Make your home look lived in by outfitting interior lights with timers. Keep the landscape trimmed and, if need be, arrange for snow removal. Long grass and unplowed driveways are a dead giveaway that no one is home. Dont post your vacation plans on social media sites. Look into window film. 3M Safety and Security Window Films transform your windows by holding broken glass fragments together and helping to keep the glass in the window or door frame, protecting your home and your family from vandals. 3M Safety and Security Window Films are designed to help hold broken glass fragments together within the window or door frame by creating a stronger barrier. This helps impede entry into the home via a window. You can get 3M Safety and Security Window Films in the clear, safety-only versions, or as a combination film with both sun control and safety features. Tackle clutter and create space in your home by adding storage.

Creative Ways to Add Storage to Your Home

(StatePoint) Between books, toys and years of accumulated stuff, a home can feel cluttered. And most families quickly run out of available storage space. However, with a few smart tweaks, you can create new storage solutions for much-needed space, and dramatically alter the feel, flow and look of your home. There are a number of simple, quick and low-cost solutions that can truly open up space in the home, says John J. Isch, principal at RWA Architects and co-chair of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Custom Residential Architects Network. Isch suggests the following: Retool Furniture Furniture can be used for dual purposes to create extra storage space. Beds, for example, can be built into walls to open up a room. Drawers and other types of storage units can be added into or placed underneath bed frames. Instead of chairs, use benches with storage underneath or inside to save space and create an extra area for storage. Like beds, benches can also be built into walls. Consider thickened walls or hidden spaces between rooms that can be opened up and carved out with shelving or closets. Just be sure your plans dont pose a conflict with your electrical wiring or plumbing. Adding shelves to closets will give you more storage flexibility and make the most of your space. In some cases, you can even remove the doors to those closets for more reach. The added shelves will appear built-in and part of your room. If you have a basement, think about installing shelving units. Rethinking Your Needs Take a look at how you currently use your home and consider how rooms might be reworked to create spaces that meet your needs in smarter ways. For example, do you really need to use a spare room as an office? Does your dining room go unused because of seating in the kitchen? Take a look at your home more holistically and determine how each room should and could function. Dont forget about spaces under stairs. Carve outs or shelving can be added to spots along the wall or staircase, or under the staircase. If you have high ceilings, an architect can help you identify options for building in a completely new storage area. Building Outdoors Creating accessory outdoor storage can help you organize and bundle more cluttered items, such as tools and yard equipment. With these types of projects, one must consider zoning regulations and other elements, such as pest, rodent and environmental and temperature controls. Ensure that the storage area will serve its purpose and keep your items safe. An architect can help visualize storage opportunities that people might not consider or think are feasible. He or she can help you apply many of these storage building solutions. To find one in your area, visit: http://architectfinder. aia.org/. Most importantly, before you purge your precious belongings, take some time to create some space.

How-To Cut Home Heating Costs

In these tough economic times all of us could surely use some Good News. We are here to give you just that regarding your home heating costs. The stove and fireplace industry has been busy improving appliances which burn affordable natural gas and propane. Many now have made advances in the pilot systems by adding an on-demand pilot, called an Intermittent Pilot Ignition system. What does this mean for the consumer? The pilot does not run constantly, saving gas. Many of these appliances are zone or whole-house heater-rated and are energy efficient because they radiate heat and warm air passively, eliminating the cool-down, heat-loss issues of a ducted furnace system. Set one of these units up with a thermostat and you heat the areas you want to heat when you want to heat them. No power, no problem! Remarkable advances have been made in bio-mass, (or solid fuel) products. EPA approved wood stoves burn the secondary gases put off by wood. Many pellet stoves can efficiently burn recycled products like walnut shells. A typical objection to the idea of using a pellet stove has always

been, I have a lot of power outages. A new stove made right here in California, the Thelin pellet stove, uses a minuscule 27 watts during operation and has the ability to use a battery to run the appliance - even during a power outage. A secondary battery can be integrated with a small solar panel to run the stove for longer periods or even completely off the grid. No power, no problem! Investing in a photovoltaic system can get you completely off the grid. Where we have been content to rent a portion of utility power plants by getting our electricity from the Utility company, we can affordably buy our own power plant, even selling that power back to the Utility company. The basic economics are just like the rent vs. buy of purchasing a home. Call a reliable representative for a free analysis and estimate before the incentives end. A few companies, like our own, have been involved in the green movement since the seventies and can help you maximize your independence today. No power, no problem! Slash Your Energy Bill Fast

(NAPSI)Youre probably spending more than $2,000 a year on utility bills. Heating and cooling your home accounts for more than half of that. Older homes can be money pits. In fact, houses built before 1950 use about 60 percent more energy per square foot than those built since 2000. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing air leaksespecially around doors and windowsand improving your homes insulation are the fastest and most cost-effective ways to save energy and money. Of course, insulating wont stop leaks. So weatherstripping and caulking should be your first plan of attack. In fact, the government says those two simple airsealing techniques will pay for themselves within a year. These tips will help you save money: Check for leaks: On a cold day, run your hand around doorframes and windows. Youll need weatherstripping if you feel drafts around joints that are inside your door and window frames. Youll need caulking if you see cracks or feel drafts around the outside joints of your door and window frames. Weatherstrip your doors: A new lowcost DIY product called Cinch, by M-D Building Products (cinchdoorseal.com), allows you to seal your doors in less than 15 minutes using a special peel-and-stick 3M adhesive. All you do is measure, cut, peel and stick it into place around your doorframes and on the bottom of your doors. Weatherstrip your windows: Rolled sponge rubber weatherstripping applied to the inner sash, as well as the top and bottom of windows, will create a strong money-saving seal that will last for years. Check your caulking: Youll need to redo cracked caulking around windows and doorframes to keep outside air, rain and insects from coming in. Look for a long-lasting siliconized acrylic caulk that can be painted, resists mold and mildew and forms a weather-tight seal. Insulate your attic: If you have less than 11 inches of fiberglass or eight inches of blown cellulose (recycled paper) in your attic, you could probably benefit by adding more. This is especially important if you live in colder climates. Other easy, low-cost ways to save money include installing a programmable thermostat, turning off lights, lowering your water heaters thermostat to 120 degrees and washing full loads of dishes and clothes.

Fall Decorating on a Budget

By Melissa Frasier (aka The Busy Mom)
I love the holidays, and fall has always been one of my absolute favorite seasons. The colors of burnt orange, burgundy, and brown are associated with the falling leaves and pumpkins. I dont min seeing leaves all over on the ground, and I enjoy hearing them crunch under my feet as I walk. Since this is one of my favorite times of the year, I am always looking for ways to decorate my house inside and out using things found in nature or inexpensive items that can be worked into the decorations. I have been doing some online research this last week to try and jumpstart my brain into some new decorating ideas, and it gave me some new ideas to share. Use tree limbs, sticks, or corn stalks as outside decorations for a porch or front yard area. You want to find some really interesting tree limbs, like the oak limbs we see all over our area. These can be sprayed black or left alone for a more natural look. Stand them upright on your front porch as if they are still growing but bare limbed, so it resembles a spooky forest. Adding fake cobwebs or black paper bats (sparingly) will give it an extra touch. You can lean the sticks against the wall or attach them with fishing line. Make your own scarecrow. Remember the days when you made just about everything instead of buying it at the store? Grab some old clothes, newspapers, and find a chair to sit him in. The head can be a brown paper bag or pumpkin with a face drawn on it. Great fun for the kids. Lots of pumpkins everywhere! The more the better and in all shapes and sizes. Pile them up in bunches un-carved, and then if you want to carve them up wait until it is closer to Halloween so they dont rot too quickly. Use those leaves on your lawn or in the neighborhood. Instead of raking them up and bagging them, save some to sprinkle around on the driveway and the walkway leading up to your front door. This will be great fun for trick or treaters as they make their way to your door. It may be a messy cleanup the next day, but worth it. Acorns, pine cones, feathers or seed pods are all things that would add a great touch outdoors and can usually be gathered for free. Collect them in clear canning jars or baskets and place them around the house or outside. Dont forget the local dollar store for other decorations to complement your natural selections such as leaf garlands, artificial small pumpkins, spider webbing or battery operated candles. For $10 you can really get some great additions. This busy mom has been especially busy this fall season with school, soccer games, and homework, but I love to take some time to enjoy my favorite season with my family. Decorating for fall makes such an impact, and the kids really like to see the house looking festive for the holidays. Whats even better, you can get extra mileage out of your fall decorations by leaving them up through Thanksgiving, and to me that is what decorating on a budget it all about!
