Riverhawk fans have never cheered more loudly than what was heard in the stands on homecoming night. A dramatic victory with plenty of ups and downs overwhelmed Canyon Ridge students and fans. Burley, the rival team, had a small lead of six to zero at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Ridges crowds maintained positive spirits despite Burleys lead. With less than six minutes left of the game, Teague Sweesy, sophomore quarterback, was leading a charge towards Burleys end zone. Never has anyone seen a quieter football crowd when Teague was involved in a massive collision near the sideline. Prayers went out to Teague and his family as the students and fans waited for what seemed like a lifetime to see if he was okay. Teague was loaded up on a stretcher and was

taken via ambulance to the hospital. Senior, Eddie Marin stepped up to take charge of the team continued the drive up to Burleys three yard line. Possession was turned over on downs with only a minute and thirty seconds left on the clock. The Riverhawk fans didnt give up but there was a definite sigh of sadness, not only because the game seemed over, but because own of their own Riverhawks was in the hospital with unknown injuries. Instead of feeling despair, the seniors on the football team managed to keep the entire team positive and upbeat. Everyone knew that the game was almost over and all Burley had to do was run the ball until the clock ran out. Seemingly the last play of the game, Burley ran the ball when suddenly the crowd saw the football appear not in Burleys running backs grasp, but

bouncing into the end zone. Junior Vincent Burke stripped the running back of the football and turned a definite lose for the hawks into hope. Andy Powlus, CRhS senior, covered the ball and a roar went up over the stands like none other to date. Tied at six, hawks prayed for an extra point. Ready to kick, CRhS football players lined up and Burley blocked the kick. Crowds roared again when referees penalized Burley, and now even closer to the goal, Canyon Ridge would get a second chance to win the game. Cade Summers, kicker and senior at Canyon Ridge, had an entire fan base praying and hoping for one perfect kick. Summers kicked, the ball went through the uprights, and Canyon Ridge high School had won its first ever homecoming. Everyone cheered and cried and cheered some more. Students from Canyon Ridge stormed the field to show support for

the team and happiness from a victory hardfought. The homecoming Dance followed the game and senior Zoe Strauss remarked, It was the best dance at CRhS just because we won and everyone is united as a school. Canyon Ridges football players have lived by one motto throughout the season so far, Be the hammer, not the nail. After a wild homecoming victory, not only the football team has been following this motto; Canyon Ridge as a whole is taking on the new motto.

Senior project: Mutt Strutt

Pak624@robotsayshello.com

This summer I completed my Senior Project, and as stressful as it was, it was definitely worth it all. Earlier this spring, as a junior, we had to present to what is called Junior Boards. For this, we had to present our ideas to a panel of three judges, and dress in business-like, professional, attire. In presenting to the Junior Boards, we had to make a poster outlining what we wanted to do. If this idea did not get approved, it had to be reconstructed and represented on the next given date. I presented the Mutt Strutt. I am very passionate about animals and knew that the animal shelter needed help, as it always does. I am also into health and wellness, so I

thought, why not bring the community together to have fun with their dogs and help out the Twin Falls Animal Shelter? It was a win-win, and the Junior Boards thought so too. After the Mutt Strutt was approved, by the Junior Boards, I acquired more than enough on my plate. I had decided to do a 5k walk/run, and the first plan of attack was finding a location. I chose CSI because it is well known and the trail was great; pain free for the dogs and easy on the participants. After finding the location, I then had to get sponsors for my event. All my sponsors were very generous, either donating money and/or prizes for the event. After my location and sponsors were set in stone, I began advertising like crazy. I set up my flyers all over town, got a PSA (public service announcement) in

the Times-News, and on the radio. Keeping a journal of everything was super important. I had to log every second, minute, and hour of anything and everything that went towards the event. It helps to reflect on what did and didnt work, that way you can better accomplish your goal and figure out your next plan of attack. In the end, the event was an enormous success. The Mutt Strutt raised $1,043 and 300lbs of dog and cat food and all of it went directly to the Twin Falls Animal shelter. There was tons of great feedback; people were saying it should be an annual event and lots of generous people took part. Not only was it a lot of fun, but a tremendous learning experience. A word of advice for the underclassmen getting

ready for senior projects: dont procrastinate. Procrastination is what could seriously potentially ruin a project, especially one that has deadlines like mine did. For these senior projects that arent job shadowing, it is all completely controlled by the student. And, when looking for sponsors, the worst thing that could happen is that they say no. One has to make sure they tell them: who, why, and what? Who is it you are giving the money to, why should the sponsor give you their money for this and whats in it for them (i.e. free advertising of their business)? A reason to not procrastinate: one might actually have fun throughout their project. I know I did, and it was very rewarding to bring the community together for a local cause.

It took about 3 weeks to advertise the event, adding onto the 50 hours Sarah spent on her senior project.

Lunch is taking a healthier route this school year. Michelle Obamas Lets Move campaign is meant to provide kids and teens with options for a healthier lifestyle. She has made multiple changes in different areas in young peoples lives, including the lunch room. This school year, there are notable changes in pizza, a school favorite. In order to abide by the new lunch standards, Canyon Ridge high School has teamed up with Dominos to make a smart recipe. This recipe uses a whole grain crust, less sauce which reduces sodium, less cheese, and meats. however, has this new recipe and other, healthier options brought students opinions of lunch down? Students have been given healthier choices along with the new pizza recipe, such as more fruits, vegetables, and beans. These new lunches are advertised as having the correct serving sizes for the age group and proper nutrients. One senior, Damian Sonneland disagrees with this advertisement, saying As a wrestler, I have to watch my calories, so I would like to see an actual list of the nutrients and what is in the food. I do feel the food is still as unhealthy as the menu before, even if they say its healthier. That is why I tend to eat mostly salad bar, instead of other lines. Other students like Cedar Miller, junior, favored the new lunch, sayingI think it is getting better, because the pizza is healthier. There are better choices, like salad in the sack lunches and more fruits. Another junior, Steven Russin II, said I think that it is worse, it seems less organic, and more synthetic. Some students dont even eat the lunch now, like freshman McKenzie Smith, Lunch hasnt changed from what we used to eat, I dont see the difference. Now, I usually go down to the Nest and get a Coke and a brownie. Its faster and better. Ethan helms, a sophomore, when asked what changes he observed, he said I think that the food is the same, but there is a lot more emphasis on choosing the healthier food. Opinions of students differ, but almost all said that it is the same as the old menu. Changes in lunch are an ongoing process, and it all comes down to the person and what they favor in their food. a football field. After this scenario, Mr. Dickinson introduced Jared Fogle. Jared came to the front of the stage and shared his story. How old are you guys? 14, 15? Well, Ive been with Subway for 14 years. He says at 20 years old, he weighed 425lbs, and thats when he decided that that was enough. With a Subway just next door, Jared began having sandwiches every day, and started walking more often. After just one year, Jared had lost a total of 245lbs. You guys are better texters than you are writers, commented Jared, pointing at that almost all the kids in the room were born with a phone in their hand. Its never been this big of a deal with any other generation of kids. Jared continued talking about how dangerous it really is to text while driving; its like driving blindfolded. Virginia Tech had done a study recently, and concluded that when someone texts while they drive, they are 23x more likely to be in a car crash. This is a staggering statistic, considering that reading a texts can take only seconds, and thats all the time needed to get in an accident. Officer Triner then came up and spoke to the freshman. He asked how many people could drive, were taking drivers ed, and who had cell phones. Triner said, Having a license is a huge responsibility. After adding that 38 states have laws against texting while driving, he introduced the mayor to come up on stage. The mayor, Greg Lanting, read a proclamation on texting while driving. He brought up the Virginia Tech study, and said that the week of September 24 was texting while driving awareness week. Twin Falls was the first city in Idaho to have this law. The reason why I brought this law, is I had some people coming from Boise to Twin Falls for a funeral. There was a girl driving on the other side of the highway, not much older than you, and she was texting. She ended up on the other side of the highway, hitting and killing the couple. The mayor included this story to show how real the dangers are, and finally concluded with Go Riverhawks. Jared shares that the best thing about public speaking is that its a chance to influence others in a positive way, although

it took some time to get used to being in front of others. I have been all over the place; I have went to Pocatello, Boise, all 50 states at least 9 times over, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and others. Jared says, adding that his favorite visit was definitely Australia. When asked on his favorite memory with Subway, Jared says, meeting President Obama and George Bush at the White House. And the fact that they knew who I was! If you ever wanted to know what shampoo Jared Fogle uses, he shares that he uses Head & Shoulders, or whatever that hotel has.

On September 27, 2012, a very well-known spokesman came to speak to the freshman. Jared Fogle, the Subway guy, came and hosted the Texting While Driving assembly. He spoke about how texting while driving is very dangerous. Mr. Dickinson was first to speak, and thanked important figures for coming, including the mayor of Twin Falls, Mr. Dobbs, and some police officers. This is a special opportunity, on a serious issue, Mr. Dickinson explained, saying that texting while driving is a leading cause of teen car accidents. A very short clip was then played, showing a driver texting, and crashing into a vehicle. It showed that in four seconds going 50mph, a driver goes the length of

Republican National Convention

As the time for reelection comes around, our candidates are campaigning hard. And there is one time a year for people of like minds to gather and discuss. A time for people to decide which candidate they want to vote for. And what better way to do so if not at the Republican National Convention? This year, the RNC and the DNC both took place in Florida. The Republican Convention started out with a heart-warming speech from Ann Romney. She talked about her and her husbands financial struggles at the beginning of their marriage, and how he had worked his way up to the top. She told the story of a Mitt Romney that almost no one in the country knows. She talked

Buddecke006@robotsayshello.com

about how they met at a high school dance, how he made her laugh, how they ate tuna fish when they were a young married couple. Her best line? Mitt doesnt like to talk about how hes helped others, she said. Because he sees it as a privilege not a political talking point. *Cue huge applause* Unlike almost everyone who spoke on Tuesday night, Ann Romney isnt and never has been a politician. That makes her performance that much more impressive. And to be honest, Ann never really touched on politics too much. Instead, she touched on the finer points of Mitt Romney. The Mitt Romney no one but her and her family has seen. This made Mitt seem a lot more human. Knowing that he had a real life outside of politics may have helped warm a few

people up to him. As the Convention continued, many powerful speeches were given. And perhaps the most impressive and exhilarating speech came from New Jersey governor Chris Christie. Christie burnished the Christie brand with his keynote address, which, after all, was kind of his goal. Christie was blunt and remarkably relaxed. He came across as entirely at ease in his own skin and as close to a regular guy as politics can produce. Theres only one thing missing now. Leadership. It takes leadership that you dont get from reading a poll. You see, Mr. President, real leaders dont follow polls. Real leaders change polls. The other keynote speaker for the RNC was Clint Eastwood. (Yes the actor.) Eastwood, who

was reported to be the nights mystery guest earlier in the day, mocked President Obama, hitting the president on, among other things, the countrys unemployment problem, Afghanistan and being a lawyer. During his 10-minute remarks that began shortly after the broadcast networks began their special coverage of the convention at 10 p.m. ET, he quipped that Mr. Obamas supporters, including Oprah Winfrey, cried with optimism in 2008, adding, I was even crying. And ... I havent cried that hard since I found out that there is 23 million unemployed people in this country. Now that is something to cry for because that is a disgrace, a national disgrace, and we havent done enough, obviously this administration hasnt done enough to cure that, he said.

Democratic National Convention

As the election time rolls around, voter will hit the poles to usher in a new president or keep the current president in power. This is what is considered to be the mad dash to the finish line by both candidates. But how exactly are we able to dictate when the race turns into an all-out sprint? The answer is the National Party Conventions. Each convention is supposed to be a chance to get out their message and platform with little disruptions by the other party. The other purpose is to give the party nomination for President. This year the two major conventions took place in The Sunshine State. Whether you are a democrat, or a republican you must agree that the National Conventions are a magical time. This Democratic National Convention was packed full of moving speeches. Some of the most memorable include the First Lady Michelle Obama. Her riveting and heart moving

Schmechel909@robotsayshello.com

speech kicked off the first night of the convention and set a tone for all of the Keynote speakers to follow. Most were not able to do so, still some people did not back down from the challenge and instead rose to the occasion. This person was no one other than the former President Bill Clinton, with his speech being scheduled two days after the First Ladies. He was the last speaker of the night with a speech scheduled for twenty-eight minutes. Since the animosity between President Clinton and President Obama is well known he was only expected to barley make time. Instead he came out and shocked the nation with a fortyeight minute speech giving his first total endorsement of President Obama. He riveted the nation with his talk of grandeur, policy, and his forth right comparison of Republicans to the Democrats. He even was able to get in a couple of shots at the opposing sides Nominees and platform. He criticized republicans for setting out with the goal

of trying to make Obama a one term president; he gave this comment about the economy No president, not me, nor none of my predecessors could have done a better job than what Obama has done. Yes this

group does include the fames FDR. The night after the President Clintons speech the much anticipated acceptance speech of Obama was scheduled. The press expected him to give

Later, he was a part of the first manned mission to the moon in 1969. On July 16, 1969, he along with two others, were launched into space. The commander, Armstrong, piloted the Lunar Module and the three landed on the moon, on July 20, 1969. Three days after walking on the moon, they returned home to Earth. Senior Jordan Haviland has this to say about Armstrongs death, When I found out he died, I was really surprised. I thought he was a real American and lived an amazing life. Much like Jordans comment, he was not only the first man to walk on the moon, but he accomplished much more in his lifetime and even after. Neil Armstrong will always be known as the first man to walk on the moon.

Thats one step for man, one giant leap for mankind, said Neil Armstrong just after he took his first step, the first step by anyone, onto the moon. This one moment is known by everyone, as it was an incredible accomplishment made by America. Armstrong walked on the moon on July 21, 1969, and on August 25, 2012, America had forever lost this legend at the age of 82. Neil Armstrong was not only an astronaut, but he was also a test pilot, a pro-

fessor, and an aerospace engineer. As a child, Armstrong had a love for flying. He took flying lessons in high school, and actually received a pilots license before his drivers license, at age 15. Then shortly after turning 17, Armstrong went to college and began studying aeronautical engineering. During his college years, Armstrong went into the Navy for flight training, where he went on several missions of flight. After this, he soon returned to college to finish his schooling. In 1955, he received a Bachelors of Science degree in Aeronautical engineering,

Minimal sleep, having to cover up all of the stressne (stress induced acne). But no worries, this year is going to be full of fun

things for everyone from football games to spirit week, field trips and dances. Things may seem a little hectic right now with everyone still trying to figure out schedules and freshman learning the hallways. But once everyone gets settled in, everything will make sense. Some important things to remember as we start to lose our pens, have our combinations engraved in our memories be sure to; Take care of yourself, manage your time, and join a club or team, but most of all HAVE FUN! When the school starts,

everyone has their own conception about it; for some its hating life and counting down for the next summer, which will seem to never come soon enough. For others, it is a time of new beginnings, educational adventures and taking advantage of the new opportunities that school has to offer. Whether school means creativity, athletics, socializing, enhancing intelligence or a form of modern day slavery, school is a part of you. So once again, welcome back everybody. Lets make this year count!

Why did the chicken cross the road? To get away from the new Chickfil-A coming to Twin Falls. The new restaurants permit was approved on the 27th of March to build the restaurant, the special permit allowing a drivethrough window. The restaurant is scheduled to open in late 2012, or early 2013, with no specific date yet set. The restaurant will be the second one built in Idaho, besides in Boise. Chick-fil-A has decided to build it on a .91 acre area, a current section of parking lot, adjacent to Target and Key Bank. The building will be 4,768 square feet, large enough to hold 117 people and will follow the hours of 5:30 a.m.-11:30 p.m. The building will follow the tradition of being closed on Sundays, as are all other Chick-fil-A outlets. Along with chicken and waffle fries, Chick-fil-A will be bringing 50 new jobs to Twin Falls. There is also great opportunity

Emerson413@robotsayshello.com

for qualified employees to receive scholarships from Truett Cathys Leadership Scholarship Program, which has given out 26 million dollars in scholarships so far. Cathy founded the program in 1973, 27 years after he opened his first Chick-fil-A in Georgia. Currently, there nearly 1,620 Chick-fil-A outlets and the one coming to Twin Falls will make just one more for the 4 billion dollar industry. For Riverhawks, this brings a new lunch option to the menu, Especially for those who want to eat out for lunch. The location of the new Chick-fil-A is closer to the school, and has a selective menu, such as milkshakes, chicken sandwiches, waffle fries, and even breakfast. There are also healthier options such as salads, wraps, and fruit cups. The drive-through will be more convenient for students in a rush. It would seem that chicken wont be getting across the road after all, especially with the new lunch-time rush. CRHS students cant wait.

The Danger of Idaho Wildfires

BY BAYLEY SHIRLEY
Sta Writer

Skies arent blue anymore here in Twin Falls. Idaho wildfires continue to burn, even here in the south. Although, it may seem that fires are getting worse, they are improving with the advance of Winter. With fires as close as just across the Snake River Canyon, to the South Hills, the sky is still a haze of smoke that lingers for days on end. In the South Hills, fire spreads and soon areas such as around Murtaugh Lake have been stated off limits for safety purposes. That fire east of Rock Creek Canyon is at 45,000 acres and is 10% contained, so far. The fire has grown considerably with crews trying to keep it contained near the Little

Shirley015@robotsayshello.com

Cotton Creek area, but it has already crossed Dry Creek. The Halstead fire 18 miles northwest of Stanley has reached 43, 263 acres and is 3% contained. Additionally, the fire has spread up east towards the Valley Lakes area. Another fire known as Flat Top 2 also repeatedly burns, covering up to 135,000 acres and is 40% contained. This particular fire has been difficult to contain what with its rough terrain and gusty erratic winds in the area. On Highway 30 burns a fire of 2,000 acres; 50% contained. Firefighting crews have been able to control this fire but growth is still possible. The Hot Well fire out near Declo has reached 3000 acres and is 20% contained. The terrain and wind has

also been a restraint on the crews who are fighting to knock down the fire. Growth potential of the fire is still high. While fires burn here in the south, bigger fires such as the Trinity Ridge fire are improving. Luckily, the Trinity Ridge fire is currently recovering with the outer perimeters contained and only a few uncontained areas being monitored. It is highly anticipated that these uncontained areas continue to burn slowly until significant precipitation is received. This fire was human caused, has grown to 146,832 acres and is 75% contained. The current growth potential is low. Overall, fires are still an epidemic, but with winter coming up soon, the fire season will finally end.

Throughout ones life, many weird occurrences may happen; some funny, some shocking, and some just plain weird. You may ask yourself, Have I had anything weird happen to me? or Are any of my weird moments newsworthy? Compare your stories to the ones following that made the list this time to see if you can size up to anyone else making national news. The first incident occurred in the town of Lafayette, Louisiana where a mother of a nine year old boy was wondering why her son wanted nothing to do with school and the people in it. After school officials looked into the concern and interviewed about 100 students did the mother learn that a substitute teacher used red duct tape to quiet the child. The superintendent of the school district remarked that the incident was outside the boundaries of common sense and outside the boundaries of [their] discipline matrix. He also added that We felt like

Cunningham026@robotsayshello.com

weve taken the necessary disciplinary action against that teacher, but the parent always has the right to take additional charges. The mother commented that she plans to pursue further criminal charges. In conclusion, police told NBC News that a report had been filed and police are actively investing the incident. Think a moment and ask yourself if you think a teacher should have ever put duct tape over your mouth to hush you up. In another story, a British woman, after reportedly drinking alcoholic beverages and eating hallucinogenics, hijacked a double decker docked ferry and floated out to sea yelling at police on the dock still. While sailing out to sea, the woman repeatedly yelled Im Jack Sparrow! and Im a pirate! along with comments to the docked police such as What are you going to do now? and I believe this is out of your jurisdiction. An hour passed and police caught the woman and arrested her. It was later found that in fact, she was neither Jack Sparrow nor a pirate.

Democratic Convention
Best speech of his life and to trash his opponent, much like he did in the 2008 elections. Again the US population was in for a surprise. He did not come out swinging or calling out his opponent, in fact he never actual said Romneys name. He was expected to prove that they were better off now rather than four years ago. He did just that , and yet he went for the extra mile. He apologized for his short comings and asked for more time to do the things he was hired to do. He asked one other thing from this election though and that was that if he does win put in a congress that he can work with. The DNC was a success but was it enough?

To many, Hurricane Isaac was a reminder of Hurricane Katrina that struck 7 years ago to this day. On August 29, 2012, Hurricane Isaac struck Louisiana. The damage couldnt be compared to Katrina, but some homes suffered more than others. Some people were spared and only had to pay a small a little to fix their house, while others had to

pay thousands. With wind speeds up to almost 96 miles per hour, one can just imagine the damage. When asked what he was going to do next, James Jackson said, We have to finish cleaning up. The damage wasnt bad at our house, but only a half a mile away, people lost homes. James has to spend $500 to repair his house. James said that during the hurricane, he and his wife, Yrma, watched the water levels, so that they would know if

they would have to leave. So what are the people in Louisiana planning on doing next? Some got lucky and didnt lose their homes but some will have to repair their homes. Whereas some will have to move in attempt to save themselves some grief if and when another hurricane hits Louisiana again. Some people are also getting sick of having to fix their home every time there is a hurricane. Other people are just getting tired of the hurricanes and their effects.

New teachers make their home at CRHS

This year, quite a few new teachers have joined us here at Canyon Ridge High School. It may have been a sad moment to say goodbye to our past teachers, but this goodbye opened new doors, to the new teachers rooms that is. One of our new teachers is Mr. Isaacs, who now teaches drama, speech, and creative writing. Before this year, Isaacs was a sub and teacher at a summer camp, but this teaching job is what he calls his, first gig. As a child, Mr. Isaacs had high hopes of being a firefighter, much like any other kid. Although when he got to college, he began to realize that he wanted to become a drama teacher. Drama had a profound effect on me, it turned my life around. In school, Id say I was kind of a quiet, awkward kid. Then I accidently took drama, and with that, I could talk easier in front of people, and I wanted to share that.

In these few weeks of school, Isaacs tells that he has already learned a lot about himself and his abilities. When I first got here, I really wanted to be organized and have everything planned. I mean, I can still do that, but Ive learned that I have to be more open and prepared for change. When asked about the best thing about teaching so far, Isaacs says, The kids. I have an awesome group of them; I have a cool advisory. Mr. Isaacs is very friendly, and when a fellow drama student told him that she wanted to take creative writing next semester, he happily said, You are more than welcome too. Mr. Irwin is another addition to the Canyon Ridge High School staff. He teaches the subjects chemistry and physical science. Like Mr. Isaacs, it is also his first year teaching. He originally went to college for biology, but Canyon Ridge was in need of a chemistry and physical science, and his education enabled him to fill the position. Mr. Irwin wanted to

be a Herpetologist growing and they can only improve. up, one who studies reptiles. So why not stop by their This dream stayed with him room number and say hello! until he got in high school. At that point in time, it became clear to him that he would become a teacher. He may have changed his idea of a career, but he was still interested in science. Choosing to go to college for biology still kept him close to the curiosity of the Photo by Autumn Myers world. Mr. Irwin Mr. Irwins personality shines through as he shares that so far jokes with his student. the best thing about teaching is, Definitely sharing a sense of wonder. Both of these teachers present lively spirits to their students. With their light-heartedness, and great humor, both teachers can easily be anyones favorite. Mr. Isaacs and Mr. Irwin have already proved to Photo by Autumn Myers be great additions Mr. Isaacs studiously typing away as he enters our school district student grades.

Microsoft launches new charity aimed at youth

By Janet I. Tu The Seattle Times (MCT) SEATTLE _ Microsoft announced Thursday that its undertaking a new global initiative to combat the opportunity gap for young people. Philanthropically, the initiative is the biggest step weve taken in the 37 years of the company, said Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith. Called YouthSpark, the program marks a new emphasis in Microsofts philanthropic efforts, one that focuses on global youth programs. The company said it is investing $500 million in the initiative. Some of the money will be shifted from other charitable areas in which the company is involved worldwide, and some of the money will be new. Taken altogether, that means Microsoft is committing the majority of its corporate cash giving to philanthropic efforts that support and serve youth. YouthSpark is aimed at creating opportunities such as education, employment and entrepreneurship for about 300 million youths in 100 countries over the next three years. Microsoft is partnering with hundreds of nonprofits worldwide in the effort. The initiative will likely reach about 50 million people in the United States and about 250 million in the rest of the world, Smith said at a media briefing Thursday on the program. CEO Steve Ballmer placed the initiative in the context of the big, bold bets Microsoft is making this year with the introduction of Windows 8 and other new products or upgrades. He said YouthSpark is another bet _ one to close the opportunity gap. Smith said the YouthSpark initiative does not change Microsofts corporate giving focus in the Puget Sound area of Washington. We recognize this is our home state, he said. Support for, say, local arts groups and hospitals is definitely not going to be going down, he added. The YouthSpark initiative is launching with three new programs: _Give for Youth, a global microgiving marketplace. _YouthSpark Hub, an online space where people can find out more about the programs and resources. _Innovate for Good, a global, social online community geared toward connecting youths with each other. Part of the initiative also involves donations of Microsoft products, including Office 365 for education, free tech tools for teachers and students and Skype in the classroom. ___ (c)2012 The Seattle Times Visit The Seattle Times at www.seattletimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Services

Daisys: an old fashioned candy shop bringing a new variety to Twin Falls
BY SABRYNA SCHMIDT
Sta Writer
Schmidt845@robotsayshello.com

Where else in Twin Falls can a 16-scoop banana split be found other than at Daisys: Old Fashioned Candy? Mark and Colleen are a friendly couple who love owning the store. They hand make all of their caramel, chocolate, and brittles right inside

the store. The only thing they order is their gummy products! If one has ever been to Daisys, they have most likely heard of their volcano drink. It consists of the customers choice of flavored soda (ranging from grape to swamp water) and dry ice. Why is it called the volcano drink? When the dry ice is placed into the drink, it causes it to bubble and smoke, making

it stand out amongst the other drinks.Mark and Colleen have been running both stores since 1994. The stores old location was near where Buffalo Wild Wings is now located. Back then, there were twelve to fifteen people working in the store. Now the two of them are running it by themselves. Taking it to an ice cream fountain only shop, to an ice cream, chocolate, caramel, and candy shop, they are very pleased with the way things have turned out. Next time people stop by, they may consider trying Marks personal favorite, Anything with caramel, chocolate, and cashews. It is a great spot to go to, get some sweets, and unwind after a long day of school.

Artist spinning the wheel

Requiring talent and motivation, pottery can frustrate the best artists out there. Alex Leblanc took on that frustration and has withstood the test of time. Alex started doing pottery his sophomore year thinking it would just be a fun class to take; however, his decision turned into a three year commitment. The first year of hand making pottery was okay for him, but he likes working on the wheel much better. He commented, It took some time to get used to it and get good at it, but it was worth it. His favorite project, a salsa dish, was an accident of sorts. It was an originally green dish with a

cappuccino-colored inside. He accidently dropped different colored glaze on the outside and ended up dropping multicolored glaze onto his dish. He described the finished product as perfect. Right now he is currently working on a covered casserole dish, but he is looking forward to future projects. In addition to pottery, Alex really enjoys playing guitar in his spare time and it is his favorite hobby. He loves acoustic, but he can play both acoustic and electric. He sings only when he is alone while he is playing. Alex really loves wrestling and he has done the sport all three years of his high school career and plans to do it this year. He has spent his sophomore and junior

year on the varsity team and hopes to continue this year on varsity as well. He was a captain last year and has dedicated countless hours to his team. Describing himself as a warrior, Alex wants to join the Navy after high school and plans on becoming an officer. Two of Alexs brothers have gone into the Navy and it is a great career. After the Navy, Alex is thinking about going to Washington State University. He knows that whatever college he decides to choose, he is planning on taking a glassblowing class. He knows that his pottery background will assist. Alexs motto in life and advice to anyone involved in anything is, If you love what you do, strive to be the best you can be.

Who better to look at your feet than senior Jacob Quaintance? Jacob is the best man for the job, as he is an employee at Famous Footwear. He has been working there for three months and comments, I have seen more feet than anyone should. Jacob is involved with much more than just feet; he is involved in bowling, and hopes to be a part of the golf team this year. Id like be in bowling and golf leagues in college, says Jacob. He has high hopes of being a pro bowler, and his future looks bright. Jacob says that his senior year so far is great, but gives some advice for freshmen, Enjoy your teachers. Dont look negatively at a class youre not good at. Negative makes you gloomy, then you break out, so dont do it. Proactiv doesnt work. Jacob Quaintance has ben here at Canyon Ridge since he was a freshman, all four years the school has be running. Many know Jacob Quaintance to be a positive and funny guy, which enables him to easily tell an embarrassing moment. A while ago at work, I got there in a hurry because I was about five Photo by Autumn Myers minutes late. I did my belt, Jacob strutting his Canyon Ridge gear.

but I didnt do the button of my pants. So when I was working, I turned around and my pants fell off. It may have been embarrassing in front of the customers, but he simply laughs it off. When asked on what his favorite moment in high school so far is, Jacob describes an experience here at Canyon Ridge. On spirit day, I wanted to be best dressed. So I went to Wal-mart, got some General Tsaos chicken in a hoagie bun, and came back eating it. It was so epic; I had a silver moustache, red sideburns, a silver and red afro, and a white headband. Jacob can always been seen venturing down the hallways with a big smile on his face. Being such a positive and happy person has a profound effect on others, as he can easily brighten anyones day. Look for Jacob Quaintance on spirit day!

One of three tubas that play in the CRHS pep and symphony band, Ashley Owens is the only senior playing tuba. She has been in band for four years; this year is going to be her fifth. She says the reason she wanted to be in band is because it has been her dream since she was little. Her favorite composer is Bach. Music is her life; she likes all kinds of symphonic music, because of how soothing it is. Back when her parents were together

COLLINS323@robotsayshello.com

she would sing quite frequently. During the divorce, music became my serenity in a world of chaos. Through the pain and yelling she would open her heart and let the words pour out. Music has been my getaway tool for a long time. I keep my radio on all night to help me sleep. For her, it is a way to help memorize songs and have a little bit of white noise. She sings a lot now because it is her comfort place. When im having a bad day and get to class and begin to play it helps me feel a lot better, but not perfect. with music still around,

everything is going to be alright for her. On top of this, Ashley wishes to graduate and earn money before she goes to a quality culinary school. She wants to open her own restaurant. Her hobbies include drawing, collecting magic and dancing. I love to have my friends hang out. On top of this she does anime club. Her motto in life is Live life like theres no tomorrow. Her advice to underclassmen is Keep your chin up because high school isnt everything.

From the heat of the summer to the cool days of fall, the new season is moving in. While the fun in the sun is coming to an end, autumn has begun to take over. The new season brings more serene days, it also brings what most come to dread, school. However, when school begins, so do sports. Fall brings in different opportunities for the year. The biggest attraction starting in August is football. National Football League (NFL) and college football both start as the weather gets cooler. The question is, who will be the best team? At this time of year, football games dominate in entertainment. Its the same for High school football as well. When football season rolls around, the Crimson Crowd makes its appearance, this dynamo team at the sidelines; one

becomes the best they can be. Yet, its not just sports, fall also brings calmer weather. Autumn carries cool wind and colored trees. It conveys a picture of pleasant peace. This time of year is one that is cherished. Days are more relaxed, calm, and hassle-free. People enjoy walks down canyon road and evenings on the patio. Things begin to wind down only so that they are free to build back up for the most hectic day of the year, Christmas. Nevertheless, fall will remain for just a little bit longer. Even though the free days of summer have gone right past, its time to appreciate the end of the year, before the idea of 2013 settles in. So sit back and enjoy because as soon as Thanksgiving rolls around so does winter. Fall has brought summer to a close, but dont blink, or else it might be overlooked.

some quantity of money. Even though both systems are beneficial to the user, it is obvious that it depends on the user and choices that only the user can truly make. Want free apps and a large variety of choices? Look at an Android that will work just fine. Looking for an amazing security system where the motto is quality and great apps that will always work? Find an IPhone. Apple and Android markets are extensive with a ton of products to choose from. It all depends on what the user wants or needs out of his/her device and what is important to them.

Clash of technology: Apple vs. Android

BY HEAVEN MARSH
Layout Manager
Marsh795@robotsayshello.com

Technology advances and every day the race to create a better computer, tablet, music player, etc, moves one more step further. Not so long ago, the internet was a rare commodity used only with a basic level computer in the majority of households. Now, almost anyone can afford to have a mobile phone that can not only access the internet, but talk back to the user and tell who is using the phone by doing a facial recognition test. Two operating systems have been battling to top the market in smartphones.

A tough fight to be sure, but both have advantages and disadvantages that could cripple the user or allow the user to use the phone to its full capability. Android and Apple are the leading phone companies and both have operating systems to be reckoned with. Android, the newer operating system, has taken the phone market by storm with an alternative solution to those people who do not want to buy Apple products. Android is known for tons of free apps that anyone can make. The Android market revolves around normal people creating and even reproducing apps that are

huge hits on Facebook and in the Apple market. With normal people making the apps, a lot of the apps are simple and cheap. Many are free. This is a huge advantage and disadvantage to Android. The positive case is that Android provides affordable apps and many choices of quality. Android provides so many free apps that it is an easy choice for a great phone. The security system, on the other hand, is not so positive. Since anyone can create an app, many of the apps on an Android phone are faulty and are not secure to use. The better known operating system, Apple,

has dominated the technological market for a long time involving not only phones, but also music players, computers, and tablets. Apple provides a wide variety of music and apps on one major operating system that is transferable between any Apple products. The user can easily transfer apps or music files between devices and everything is secure. Apples huge advantage is having a great security system that no phone or operating system can reproduce. However, the app prices on an IPhone can be pricey. There are few free apps and almost everything requires

Increasing college degrees by broadening access to A.P. classes

MCT FORUM By Gregg Fleisher (MCT) In the 2010-2011 school year, approximately 903,630 U.S. public school graduates took at least one Advanced Placement exam and 540,619 achieved a passing score, according the College Board. That is a huge achievement: a rise of 34 percent from five years ago in the number of students passing, and a 40 percent increase in the same period for the number of students taking the exam. These gains are an important step for students preparing for the rigors of college-level courses. But those students who took the exam represent just under a third of the more than 3 million high school seniors in the United States. We know that students taking and passing A.P. exams matriculate at higher rates and perform better in college than their peers, as shown by a 2007 College Board study by Rick Morgan and John Klaric. Thats why, if were serious about closing the muchtalked-about skills gap in the United States, and improving opportunities for our students, its crucial that we enroll more students in rigorous programs such as the A.P. and give them the tools to do well. A.P. classes do more than teach integrals or The Canterbury Tales. By challenging and empowering high school students to successfully complete college-level coursework, A.P. classes dramatically increase students college readiness, according to a study by the National Center for Educational Accountability. Students earning a three or higher on A.P. exams are three times more likely to earn a college degree than students who do not pass, and African-American and Hispanic students who pass an A.P. exam are four times more likely to earn a college degree than those who do not pass, according to the study. More broadly, A.P. classes help students realize their potential as scholars and problem solvers. The experience of tackling a seemingly insurmountable goal _ mastering collegelevel content knowledge in less than a year _ and ultimately triumphing is a powerful one for students of all backgrounds, and most especially those African-American and Hispanic students who are traditionally underrepresented in A.P. classrooms. When students take A.P. classes and pass the A.P. exam, it proves they have the potential to excel in college and beyond. When all students are given the opportunity to participate _ and the incentive to succeed _ in the most challenging high school courses, theyre more prepared to succeed at the college level. At the National Math and Science Initiative, a nonprofit that supports efforts to bolster math and science education in the United States, we have an A.P. program, active in 462 schools in nine states, that encourages all students _ not just honors students _ to try their hand at A.P. classes and see what they can do if they put their minds to it. We want students to study challenging topics in high school classrooms before facing them in college lecture halls. To achieve the best possible results in getting more students to pass, we try to remove barriers that hinder schools and teachers best efforts. For example, we provide professional development for teachers in the summers and during the school year that schools cant often afford. And because A.P. teachers often are not able to discuss concerns or difficulties they have in class with colleagues because they are often the only A.P. teachers in their subject at their school, we provide an A.P. expert whose job it is to support and be on call for the A.P. teachers in the program. And because schools often cannot afford the math and science equipment needed to start an A.P. class, we provide funding for equipment with support from a public-private partnership whose grants come from foundations, large companies and the U.S. government. What weve found is that, on average, in the first year the program is implemented in a school, the number of math, science and English A.P. exams that students pass almost doubles. That means a sharp increase in the number of students taking college seriously and putting themselves on a path to completing a college degree. Are A.P. classes hard? You bet. Can many more high school students handle them and succeed in them? Definitely _ especially if they have the opportunity and the right support. ___ ABOUT THE WRITER Gregg Fleisher is senior vice president, National Math and Science Initiative. Freshmen orientation 2012

BY COURTNEY BERTONI
Features Editor

It is a beginning to a new year. The class of 2012 has started their journey through college while the other classes continue their way through the challenges of high school. This can only mean one thing, freshman. This year, National Honor Society decided it would be beneficial to the newbies to have a high school orientation. New students arrived at 7:30 in the morning while the other classes did not have to be at school till lunch. During this time period, freshmen were educated about school policy, introduced to staff and veteran students, and had a little fun on a school scavenger hunt. While the scared, wide-eyed babes appeared to be having fun, some may wonder if this event was truly beneficial to the so-called freshies.

Bertoni435@robotsayshello.com

At the start of the morning, NHS members sat down to have a heartto-heart with the class. The members shared a few laughs as the students cautiously ambled about. Ally Gates, freshman, states, I was afraid of getting lost. After this uneventful breakfast was over, the freshman and society made their way to the auditorium. Here, Canyon Ridges principals and some staff faculty spoke to the students about code of conduct and other school policies. Ally also states, It was a lot to take in Later on in the morning, Student Council members showed a video. This particular video did indeed break a few school rules but the freshman, and everyone else for that matter, had a few laughs. As the influx of oversized upperclassmen started to flood the school,

one could plainly see the newbies beginning to sweat. Not to fear, Raven Oesterlein had a presentation on bullying as her senior project. She gave helpful pointers as to what one should do if they were to be bullied or harassed. The presentation also seemed to educate student council and NHS members on the dangers of bullying. This seminar was a great refresher for those who do not remember what it was like to be at the bottom of the food chain. All and all, freshman orientation was a success. For some, the event was needed in order to calm their fears and settle their minds. The upperclassmen are not really as scary as they seem. There are multiple newbies that are able to attest to this today. The freshmen are all alive and well and seem to be coping quite nicely in their new big nest.

Financial aid: need vs. merit

BY TYLER GALBREATH
Sta Writer

Financial aid is a crucial aspect for a majority of college students these days but what should financial aid be based on? Some believe it should be based on grades, which would mean the better students would be eligible for larger and better scholarships and grants and more financial aid. On the other hand, some people believe it should be based on parents income. I believe ones financial aid should be based on familys income. In my opinion financial aid should be based on a familys income because families that have a greater income can support their children through schooling more than a family whose income is lessor. To me personally, it would make no sense if a kid whose family is better off to get more financial aid than a

Galbreath778@robotsayshello.com

kid whose family has an average or below average income. For some people like CRHSs own Mr. Tarchonie and Mr. Pehrson, financial aid was a determining factor for going to college. Mr. Tarchonie believes financial aid should be based on a little bit of both as in family financial status and your test scores, but no student should get a full ride. While Mr. Pehrson believes financial aid should be available to anyone and everyone regardless of your familys financial status and grades. He believes the student with better grades and test scores should have a lower interest rate on the loans received. Mr. Pehrson also has an interesting outlook on student athletes. He believes the boosters should be able to pay to put an athlete through school while the colleges should take the athletic scholarships and use them

for academic scholarships. Even students believe financial aid would be a determining factor. Tara Hope (senior) believes she will not be able to attend college without financial aid. She believes that financial aid should be based off grades specifically, that ones family economic status shouldnt be a factor. Tara believes a student athlete should be able to acquire a full ride scholarship too. To some financial aid is a sensitive subject; some do believe that just because a family is not economically stable they should not get special benefits, these people believe it should be strictly based on grades, while some believe it should be based on both. Either argument can agree on one thing, financial aid is a crucial aspect, a determining factor on attending any college that a student is considering.

CRHS students analyze Props 1, 2, 3

BY BLAKE MAUGHAN
Sta Writer

This November, voters across Idaho will determine the fate of Props 1, 2, and 3. While the vast majority of high schoolers cant actually vote on them, that doesnt mean that some of us dont have our own opinions. Last year about 300 students walked out of school in protest of these bills, but questions were raised about how many of them were actually there for the cause and how many just wanted to get out of class for a while. Now, a year later, how have the thoughts of the CRHS student body changed? Proposition 1 limits how much teachers can negotiate contracts with Local School Boards and ends the issuing of

Maughan045@robotsayshello.com

renewable contracts. Some people fear that teachers, who know best what the students need, will not be able to work with the school board to set budgets for classroom supplies. Some students think that teachers need to be held accountable more so than in the past. Spencer Wall, 11, said I think that teachers who dont do their jobs need to be fired. While we most of us can agree with that, there are many more divisions over how to judge if a teacher is doing their job. Proposition 2 has been criticized for judging teachers for their students success even though some students dont try to do their work no matter what the teacher does. However, some people say that if the students arent learning

for whatever reason, the teacher is responsible for fixing the problem. The final referendum is over Prop 3 which would require High School students to take a minimum of two online classes in order to graduate and it gives students and teachers laptops or tablets to largely replace textbooks. Many claims against this legislation claim that students are not responsible enough to be trusted with them, and commercials against it have shown Laptops being dropped, soaked by sprinklers, and taking all sorts of abuse. Those who are in its defense say that textbooks are equally vulnerable and online books cost a fraction of the price a physical copy does.

Game of Thrones Band Profile: Mumford & Sons

Many of have heard these three words lately: Game of Thrones, A Song of Ice and Fire. Whether it is recognized from the HBO series, the video game, or the book, the simple fact is that it has achieved unheard of amount of success. In the first book alone you follow the story of nearly ten people. Each situation is expressed from a different person from a different part of the world. It grips you with a tale of knights, dragons and royalty. The title for the first book does the rest of the series do justice, since it leaves six different factions to vie for control over one throne. The back drop of the story is simple. Almost 20 years before the book took place a uprising in the land of Westeros took place. A interbred blood line had ruled cruelly for nigh 300 years, and the rest of the lords were fed up with it. Fast forward 20 years and a new king and a new bloodline sit upon what is referred to as the Iron Throne. He dies and sends the realm into chaos. Each storyline represents a different ripple in the splash that was the kings death. The HBO series follows the book almost to the letter. When they do stray and add in details that never happened they are unneeded, grotesque, and add nothing to the story. So if you are a stickler for detail and perfection like me then I would rate the HBO series an 8 out of 10. I would not recommend this show to those who are easily grossed out. The game takes a totally different approach than what most video games do. Instead of bringing the story to life, the game creators asked to the author George R. R Martin to write a story line that takes place during the book. To the surprise of critics everywhere he consented and wrote the script. When going into the project he said that he wanted to make a video game like no other, and boy did they succeed. The game plays off, and adds to the already power packed book. Following his traditional style of different view points for different chapters, the game is broken into chapters with two different playable characters. Both storylines take part in different ends of the country so the player does not have to worry about running into the same CPUs. The two characters do run into each other in the end of the last chapter and allow the player to save the day. So whether you like to read or prefer waiting for the book to come out on movie or video game check it out one or another. Whatever path you choose there will be no regret in the end.

Barrack Obama was the most popular AfricanAmerican running for president. Obama ran with the Democratic Party and won the election by 67.8%. People were amazed by Obama when he ran for Hope and Change. America voted for him without knowing much of his past, which has a big influence on how he has been running the country. 2016: Obamas America is a movie about who Obama really is, what he stands for, and what will happen if he is chosen to be president once again. The film mainly revolves around the one question, If Obama wins a second term, where will we

be in 2016? The movie will make one confounded and sheer as they discover the mysteries and answers to their aspirations and worst fears. In the first week of being in theatres, 2016: Obamas America made around$22 million dollars. It stood in eighth on the box office just on the first week of its opening. The movie has already been seen by more than two million people. It became the fifth biggest political documentary of all time. 2016: Obamas America is a fast growing movie. There are a lot of people who like and there are people who dont like that movie. If you want to see more about Obama and what he stands for, this is the movie to see.

Every month, new books are released to be critiqued and read by millions of viewers. Whether the book will be revered as a classic read or a complete flop is up to thousands of reader all over the world. This months book reviews have all made a killing for several weeks straight. New York Times best sellers list is notorious for their reputation of listing intriguing novels. This week on the fiction list is a book called Fall of Giants written by Ken Follett. This is the novels third week on the list, however, this week it takes the number one spot. The book is the first of three in the Century Trilogy. The books tell the tale of five interrelated families that become caught up in the tragedies of World War 1 and the Russian Revolution. Though the plot line of the

story is only a fable, the events that take place are based upon true events. This particular tale is a must-read for any war story buffs out there, or a student looking for a great read. Yet another war novel, No Easy Day is first on the non-fiction list. Written by Mark Owen and Kevin Maurer, the duo tells the accounts of the Navy SEALs on a very important mission; kill Osama bin Laden. This historical account is told pseudonymously, meaning, the authors have false names to protect their identities. The book is an amazing inside story of the events that took place up to bin Ladens death and the events thereafter. It is an intriguing tale for any patriotic student looking for a great read. A murder mystery, Gone Girl, has been on the New York Times Best Sellers for sixteen entire weeks. Gillian Flynn, the author, takes readers through an

emotional rollercoaster as a woman suddenly goes missing the night of her fifth wedding anniversary. Controversy rises as her husband becomes the main suspect. Flynn keeps everyone guessing as the story progresses; is the victims husband a murderer? Find this novel at any local bookstore to find out. The final book for this weeks non-fiction is an endearing novel called Life after Death written by Damien Echols. In this heart-wrenching tale, the book accounts the story of a man released from prison after seventeen years of wrong conviction. The man was accused of murdering three boys in Arkansas. How did the justice system allow for this to happen? How was this man finally released as an innocent after almost two decades? One can only guess the outcome of a book that will keep the reader on his/her toes.

With Frankenweenie, bigger doesnt mean better

By David Hiltbrand The Philadelphia Inquirer (MCT) Frankenweenie is the apotheosis of Goth director Tim Burtons ouevre: artistic yet sterile, incredibly meticulous and totally misbegotten. Its a far more elaborate animated remake of the live-action short that first gained Burton attention back in 1984. An isolated adolescent named Victor Frankenstein, living in the wasteland of suburbia, builds a makeshift lab in the attic of his parents house to shock back to life his beloved pet, Sparky. The bolt-necked dog, its skin stitched together like a crooked quilt, creates havoc in the neighborhood. And when Victors spooky classmates duplicate his experiment with other animal cadavers dug up at the pet cemetery, the town is overrun. There was a sweetness to the original, in which Victor was played by adorable child star Barret Oliver (The NeverEnding Story). In Burtons fully mature vision, the boy (voiced by Charlie St. Clouds Charlie Tahan) is a freakishly attenuated figure with giant ghoulish eyes rimmed with black. The closest thing to a heroic character in Frankenweenie is Mr. Rzykruski, a substitute science teacher who looks like Vincent Price with three times too many teeth and who sounds like a Hungarian count. (Hes voiced by Martin Landau. Others in the cast include Martin Short, Catherine OHara and Winona Ryder.) There are two remarkable aspects to this feature. Its 3-D effects are almost excessively realistic. When Victor starts shoveling in the graveyard, you can practically feel the dirt caking to your shoes. Above all else, Frankenweenie is a devoted homage to old black-and-white horror films, particularly and most pointedly to James Whales 1931 classic Frankenstein, with Boris Karloff as the monster. You can see why such a scrupulous tribute would have impressed the veteran filmmakers at the Disney Studio nearly 30 years ago. But who did Burton have in mind _ besides himself _ when he fashioned this exhaustive animated remake? Kids wont get the references and they wont get the jokes. Adults, other than film geeks, wont have the patience. Its not so much a miscalculation of his audience by Burton as it is a disregard. What lingers after Frankenweenie, far more than its stunning technique, is a sad suggestion of solipsism. ___ FRANKENWEENIE 2 stars Directed by Tim Burton. Voices by Charlie Tahan, Catherine OHara, Martin Short, Winona Ryder and Martin Landau. Distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. Running time: 1 hour, 27 mins. The Hunger Games unwrapped

An unexpected hit, The Hunger Games raked in over 155 million dollars on opening night in the theaters in North America. Over 24 million copies of Suzanne Collins novel are in print in just the United States and demand for the trilogy is still climbing (nytimes.com). There can be no debate that The Hunger Games has taken the world by storm and hasnt only attracted teenagers, but many adults. A novel stemming from the same track that many dystopian novels have originated from, The Hunger Games takes place in a futuristic version of the United States called Panem. Seeing through a young girls eyes, the reader is taken through an impoverished district and a world that many living comfortably in todays world would never recognize. The Capital, the government of Panem, is in control of twelve districts. Since the thirteenth district staged a rebellion 74 years prior, the Capital obliterated the thirteenth district and created the Hunger Games, a pageant where 24 teenagers fight to the death on national television. Protagonist and heroine, Katniss Everdeen, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is the caretaker of her family. When the reaping comes around to District Twelve, Katnisss sister is chosen to go to the Hunger Games. Katniss volunteers instead and is taken to the Capital with Peeta Mellark, a bakers son. However morbid the novel is, it is captivating to the reader because Panem could be in the future for the United States or even the Bryan stated, The author is a very intelligent writer who made a very deep book if you read into it. I spent my time doing that and I liked the books so much more because of it. The novel, full of symbolism and meaning is expected to be around for a while. The movie got great ratings from students around Canyon Ridge, however most students advocated reading the book first. Senior Jessica Wilson put it, I thought the book was better depicting Katnisss indecision about being in love with Peeta In the movie, it just made it seem like she was in love, but in the book it was an internal war between truth and distortion. McKenna Thompson, senior, stated, I really think that the filmmakers did a really good job on the movie, and I have very little complaints. Readers and movie goers have agreed that the movie missed very little of the story but the film can never capture all the details that are within a good novel. Either way, both the movie and novel sales have risen past the point expected and are still rising. Fortunately, the next movie will be coming out just before Thanksgiving in 2013 with a new director and returning star, Jennifer Lawrence. Fans of The Hunger Games will just have to stay patient.

world. The novel serves as a warning for the human race and really shows what the world could come to. home theatres. For example, in Spiderman, when Spiderman jumps off of the building and is flying viewers would feel like they too were falling off of a building. Also in Snow White and The Huntsman, when Snow White is running, the seat will bounce almost like one would be running. The D-box really makes the movies come to life making one feel like they are a part of the movie. People absolutely love

the D-box. CRHS student Lindsey Perkins felt like she was actually in the movie. Moving with the movie seemed to make it more real. I felt like I was running or falling off a big building. Lindsey has only been to one- D-box but she definitely wants to go again sometime soon. Some people say that the D-Box is worth the twenty more dollars it costs per ticket, while others dont. D-Box is a great new item for theatres in Twin.

Christmas is the absolute peak season for snow globes. Down the aisle, snow globes with Santa or a snowman are waiting for someone to take them home. Although they are mostly seen during the Christmas season, snow globes provide a spectacular view all year round. Snow globes come in various colors, designs, and sizes, but all just as incredible as any other. The snow globes that are found during Christmas are generic; basically what was put on display the previous year. When one thinks of snow globes, the thought of shaking a globe of snow may come to mind. Possibly even turning it over, and wind the music box, and hear classical music. Many do not know that there is much more to snow globes that what is commonly assumed. If shoppers looked online, they would be astonished by what they can find. On Disneys official site, one will find a selection of extravagant globes. These snow globes contain famous Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Tinker Bell, Winnie the Pooh, Finding Nemo, and many more. Disneys produces some of the most incredible snow globes ever created. Snow globes are not just for the holidays, they are all year decoration. With the right snow globe, one can make their home that much more beautiful and

elegant with snow globes on display. There are snow globes that can describe a person; there are snow globes out there for ocean lovers, animal lovers, and even athletes! Snow globe collectors think much more than the basic snow globe as some snow globes can be very large, even a foot in height. Some snow globes have blowers included, which cause the snow to spin on its own with the music. Others may include special lights coming from inside the snow globe, adding even more extravagance. Snow globes can have very articulate bases, the detail being so fragile, that it can be broken off. Snow globes were first produced in the late 1800s, and were popular for quite some time. Today, the popularity has decreased severely. Many stores do not sell snow globes, and if they do, it is only during special occasions. Although they have seemed to have died down, snow globe collectors are still alive and winding up their snow globes.

Nutting824@robotsayshello.com

Everyone catches themselves watching a music video on YouTube and then watching funny scenes or how to bake a cake with butter crme in the middle. Some even have their favorites. Tianna Korsens, 12, favorite is Jenna Marbles. Tianna comments, I LOVE Jenna Marbles! She is so funny, and I always get a kick out of her! Jenna Mourey, also known as Jenna Marbles earned her bachelorettes degree in physiology, counseling, and mastered in sports physiology, but wasnt quite ready to grow up. Jenna started her own videos and people got a kick out of them! Keri Schwarz, 12, says Jenna Marbles is flipping hilarious! I would recommend that teenagers only need to be watching this because I dont think parents would understand and little kids just wouldnt get what shes talking about! Jenna Marbles is comedy for teenagers and adults with a sense of humor. Tianna Korsen also added, Teenagers are the only people that should be tuning in! Ha-ha parents, I definitely dont think theyll approve. One of Jennas videos, How to trick people into thinking youre

good looking, was posted on www.youtube.com and with the help of her friends passing it around on Facebook; it had 38 million views! Tianna and Keri both agreed that she was the funniest thing on earth, giving her a 10 out of 10 score! One thing Keri added was, for a girl with a degree, I dont know why shes making YouTube videos?! So, to someone who loves getting a good laugh over valid points, Jenna Marbles would be the girl for that person! The main guy and creator, Steve Kardynal has himself a camera to shoot, songs to play, and people to act; sounds like a pretty good crew. Aaron Burton, 12, also added that he thought they were hilarious as well and said that he would give them a rate of, 10. Kendell on the other hand said, Id

have to give them a nine on a scale from 1- 10 because although theyre really funny, Ive seen better! she also added, Id recommend anyone that needs to have a good laugh to watch these, but you cant just watch one, you have to finish all of them! While Aaron said, All creatures alike should watch these videos, no matter how many times you watch them; you always get a good laugh from it. Songs in Real life one made the big hit having 29,295,027 views to have them create more videos. Kendell also said, My favorite episode is number 3 because it has all of the music that I listen to the most. While Aaron said his favorite was number two. Songs in real life: 2 currently has; 19,672,950 views and episode three has 12,780,465 views, as of today (September 17, 2012). With episode number one takes the win! To find these videos is also very simple. Just type in www.youtube. com and search Songs in real life, they should all pop up in order. Easy right!? So heres to those that love watching YouTube videos just for a good laugh! These two videos will definitely get to those who do the most and hey, even if they dont just keep searching for videos that will make the viewer laugh nonstop.

Thats what the outcome should be. What if it isnt? What if we really did die? The morning of the 21st of November, 2012 is bright, a slight breeze from the west. People have shaken off the thought of the end of the world. Its a myth, a joke, or some sort of joke. Kids go to school, adults to their jobs, and toddlers to playing. No one sees it coming until the unexpected happens. The sun pulses, sending out blazing hot temperatures that hits all four interior planets, which includes us. eo games, attending work when need be, and hanging out with our friends. Yet as recent events in Chicago have proven this sort of mentality is in fact false and misleading. Despite these allegations this dynamic duo has decided to look at the question from the perspective of the all too infamous teacher. These people who run most of our day-to-day lives by assigning home work, and not allowing us to talk with our friends whenever the urge arises, what would they do when they are not busy with protesting? A couple of our respected leaders would join the military for a bit of scenery change. When we posed the question to the ever loveable Coach Alsterlund he finally conceded the statement I would join the army. Not thirty-seconds after we finished talking with coach we ran into the new face on campus Coach Beecham he gave us this answer I would go back to the Navy. Like us, many of our teachers had visions of grandeur brake. Take the popular biology teacher Mr.

Zuercher for example when posed the question he had this to say, I would sleep in and play video games. While a teacher imagines himself relaxing at home, Ms. Rey the Athletic Trainer imagined herself doing something totally different. More camping, fishing, and hunting would be done. Sleep would be had, whether it is the outdoors or the indoors that is more alluring to you as an individual the teachers would probably have you beat there. Let us hope that a strike does not happen. Most schools in Chicago are being run by the principal staff and the other school employees. Since one Ms. Howard thought that Students would strike back as punishment and Mr. Hicks would come to work every day like usual, who would be punished in the end? We the students with near total anarchy, the non-teachers union employees having to herd us, or the teacher who would not be able to see our glowing personalities, or to the dismay of Mr. Davis Kids would not be able to enjoy my wonderful personality.

The fawn at the fair

BY AUTUMN MYERS Im the fawn at the fair, Im bald and I have no hair. A voice that echoes throughout the fair grounds. Has one ever paid attention to the bald fawn, when there are so many furry ones to love? What do they not see? This fawn has been at the fair for various years, and has endured the pain of having no attention. Coming from the shores of India, the fawn grew up as a single child. Later on, the family moved to the U.S. because the fawns fair got a new job. The fawn was skeptical about the move, but the father promised better things. Upon arrival to the U.S., the fawn was joined the fair with his family. It will be fun, said the father, you will meet many kind humans who offer food. The fawn didnt understand, but agreed. Two days before the fair, the fawn was laying with his father. Then, a human came by, and took the fawn. Before he knew it, the fawn heard a loud buzzing noise close to his body. He was being shaved, he squirmed but the human held tightly. Maybe its just a haircut, thought the fawn. After only a minute, the fawn was returned to the father. There ya go little guy. The human spoke softly as he left. The fawn looked at the father, who was wide-eyed. Fawn-boy, what did they do to your gracious good looks? The fawn was confused, so he walked towards the spinner of an old truck, and became astonished. He found an ugly and bald squirrel, but soon realized it was him. Father! I am an ugly deer! squeaked the fawn. Oh no, replied the father, you are not a deer. The fawn glanced at his father. Say it, said his father. The fawn looked at the spinner, gulped, and whispered. His father yelled, Louder! The fawn closed his eyes and spoke, Im ugly and Im proud! Im ugly and Im proud!!

As always, the lack of common sense is absolutely unfathomable. (That means unbelievable for those of you unaccustomed to big words.) Dont believe me? Well, here are some examples of our generations stupidity. I thought the capital of the U.S. was Los Angeles? Isnt the Pentagon an airport or something? It takes one whole tree

to make one piece of paper. Thats why we recycle. *facepalm here* Is Israel in Europe or Asia? Oh, are you not supposed to eat those mushrooms that are growing in your yard? Are we green in the dark? Cause every time I watch a movie or a TV show and people are in the dark, theyre green. That would be the night vision light. WE HAVE NIGHT VISION?!?! Does the Hulk do photosynthesis? Is that why hes green? I thought we have 52 states! You know what about Costa Rica and the other one?

Smack Another Student

Across I am known to haunt people and make them scream, i am usually floating in the air. I am the thing that will come out to get you, but only during a full moon. I am the bones that hide in your closet. I hide in your soul. I am the thing that little kids are affraid of laying under their beds. You do this to add a design to your pumpkin. You throw toes and nails inside me. I make potions that are usually green. I am round and orange with a little green stem; usually used as a handle. The dead lay bellow these. I am the one thing that shadows bad luck and you don't want to see me on Friday the 13th.

Down I have the biggest pimply nose and am always making things in my cauldron. 2 I will eat your flesh of your skin. 3 you wear me during this holiday day and night and disguise yourself. 4 I am the half bat and half person that will suck my teeth into your pale skin. 6 Walk through me and you'll have the scare of your life. 11 The home of a giant black spider. 12 These little yummy things will make your teeth rot. 13 I usually hide in people's bushes and have no body. 1

Its that time again River Hawks! Yep, time to go and cheer on the Canyon Ridge Cross Country team! They have been busting their butts since August 10th and still continue to do so during every practice! Coach Ben Benoit said, The biggest improvement Ive seen is having more kids come out. We started with about 30 and made it to 45. Coach Benjamin added, Ive seen

a huge improvement with the number of kids that has come out since year one, to especially this one, year four. Runner Kaleb Price, 12, said that while running he thinks of different things, one being, this sucks, but itll be worth it in the end. Kaleb, Benoit, and Benjamin all said that their best meet so far has been in Rigby. Kaleb says that, My best time of 20:50 was in Rigby, I think mostly everybody did their best there. With

45 kids running, Benjamin said, I hope to see that times keep dropping so that they will see that they can compete with each other, even as a team, so maybe theyll ALL try to get to the top seven for state. 45 runners alone is a lot of people to compete with; imagine many more teams with the same amount of runners or more. Benoit also added, I hope to see times go down as well, I hope to see them all get faster and not give up. Our hardest

meet was at Wood River, and thats where districts are; so I hope to see big improvements for when we get there! Runner Megan Coleman, 11, says, My best time so far is 23:30 at Rigby. Every time I run, all I can think about is state! I hope to see us all place amongst districts and to beat twin! Good luck Cross Country runners! We River Hawks hope to see another medal or trophy standing tall in our show case!

The NFL season is off to an auspicious start, with the Vikings shocking the 49ers, the two teams projected to go to the Super Bowl (Packers and Patriots) both starting off with a losing record, and of course the atrocious calls be the refs. It is a sad day in professional sports when the abomination that has become the calls cost teams their wins, teams earned stats, and even players games. During week 3, a hit was placed on quarterback Matt Schaub that was flagged for roughing the passer and Denver Broncos

Straub461@robotsayshello.com

linebacker Mayes was suspended for the Broncos next game. While he did make contact with Schaubs helmet, thanks to another Bronco running into him and forcing him into the helmet, the hit was no late and, in my opinion, legal. The man is a quarterback and if it had been another player like a running back it would be fine, but because hes apparently favored because he throws a player is now out of a check and fined on top of that. But I digress. The play was flagged for roughing the passer, even though it was not late. This was just one of the many insane calls by the replacements.

Who could forget calls that actually cost the Packers and Patriots their week three games? In game three the Patriots and Ravens met and battled it out in a rematch of last years AFC championship. After a hard fought game the Patriots had the lead by two points going into the final drive of the game. The Ravens had the ball and on fourth down kicked a field goal that was called good, winning the game, but when looking at the kick in slow motion it is clear the kick went in FRONT of the goal, costing the Patriots a win, and dropping them below .500. Then there was the call of the catch in the end

zone of the Packers Seattle game that gave Seattle the win over the Pack, and also dropping them below .500. For those that watched the game there is nothing to be said, but for those that didnt lets just say that offensive pass interference and wrestling the ball from multiple defenders is now apparently legal in the NFL. All in all, the biggest story from the season so far is not the plays, not the unlikely stars (look up Matt Ryans stats so far), but the officiating, or lack thereof. Clearly Goodell needs to stop being such a tightwad. The referees need to come back to the NFL because it is not the real deal anymore.

Canyon Ridge High Schools volleyball teams had their third game on September thirteenth, a home game for all three teams, as they faced Twin Falls High School. The game started at 6 p.m. with the freshmen and Junior Varsity Teams. In the first out of the three possible games, Canyon Ridge took the lead and ended the first game 25-14. They quickly move into the next game, with Canyon Ridge taking a three point lead and maintaining the score until one final serve, winning the game and match for the Canyon Ridge Freshmen with a score of 25-20. When Lynsdy Hudson, freshmen player, was asked how it felt to have their second win against Twin Falls High School she replied, It feels really good because I was from the Bruins side of town, and now I have played against them for the win. The Junior Varsity game was a win that was wanted, but was lost. They started out strong in the first game,

fighting for victory. With freshman middle blocker, Allison Gates, at the net, the J.V. team had a respectable number of blocks and a bunch of great kills. Yet, it wasnt enough to triumph. The first game went up 11 Canyon Ridge, 25 Twin Falls. As the second game began, they battled till the end, with a score of 18-Riverhawks, 25-Bruins. Kylie Fiscus, after Twins defeat commented, Its hard to lose a game, but at least we know that its losing as a team. Its losing together. Varsity was the last team to play against the Bruins. Varsity started off their match with a loss in their first and second games out of the five possible, 19-25 and 7-25. They moved on into their third with the Bruins immediately gaining a five point lead. As the game went, the Bruins gained a larger lead, the score rising to 10 River Hawks, and Bruins 24. The Bruins Varsity scored one point and won the match, with 11-25. Lexie Slagel, a sophomore setter, said, At least we know that the next time we play them, were coming at them even stronger.

This summer the world watched anxiously as athletes from each country competed in sporting events; including Track and Field, Tennis, Beach Volleyball, Soccer, Swimming, Diving, Archery, and more. Many veteran athletes returned to wow the viewers with their timetested skills, and other new, less-known faces dealt with their fears and proved they had what it takes to go for the gold. Athletes from around the world entered into a bond of friendship and respect that spreads across national, physical, and even linguistic boundaries. Out of the 205 countries

present at this years Olympics, the United States had the most Gold medals as well as the most medals overall. China took second place and Great Britain, the host country this year, took third. The U.S. had more than half of its medals in Swimming or Track and Field, with 31 in Swimming and 29 in Track and Field. Michael Phelps set the world record for being the most decorated Olympian, beating Larisa Latyninas record which had stood since 1964. The Olympic Games were as exciting as ever to watch, and in four years viewers will get to see who trained the hardest yet again. The Olympics in Rio will be long anticipated.

Swimmers take your marks! Go! Canyon Ridge High School Swim Team started their season in mid-August, and had their first meet on September 15, 2012 at the Wood River invitational. They competed in events that include 50 yard freestyle, 200 yard Individual Medley (Four 50 yard lengths that uses four different kinds of swim strokes) and 200 yard relays, using a four person team. The meet started at 11 a.m. for 4 hours. CRHS took home a combined score of 4th place out of 12th. Also, while

swimming in their separate events, three students qualified for the State Meet in November. One of those individuals is a senior, Connor Harding, who is cocaptain for the CRHS Swim Team. Harding qualified for two different events, which were the 50 and 100 yard freestyle. The team practices five days per week, under the instruction of four coaches, who all work to improve technique, speed and endurance. The swimmers range everywhere, from beginner to experienced, and anybody is welcome to join, no matter the knowledge.

San Diego State 11/3 Hawaii @ Hawaii Colorado B o i State s e Nevada @ Boise extra point. University of Idaho: Unfortunately the Vandals had a bad offseason losing 3 of their coaches and 2 of their key players returning from last year. They also left the WAC conference to join the Sunbelt conference, but the Sunbelt conference rejected the Vandals giving them to options, go as an independent team or shut down the football program. Shutting down the football program wasnt an option for the prideful Vandals and they declared they would play as an independent team and their season is coming along, not as smoothly as they wanted but surely enough. The University of Idaho Vandals are in a not so good situation this season but it will give them a better chance, if they are successful, to impress the nation this season. The University of Idaho started their season even rockier than Boise. They have lost their first four games, first to Eastern Washington when the only scored 3 points. They then played a Bowling Green state and suffered their second lost 13-21. Unfortunately the U of I vandals played a very strong, very dominate No. 3 LSU. LSU went to work quickly and the Vandals couldnt keep up, they suffered a 63-14 loss. The losing streak continues for their fourth straight against the University of Wyoming 37-40. The Vandals were so close to breaking the losing streak playing through regulation time and into overtime. Wyoming kicked a field goal to win the game and ruin Vandal hopes.

Sports lockouts College football in Idaho

BY TYLER SCHMECHEL Every case of sport lockouts has yielded different results. When the NFL went through their famous Lockout of 2011 you could not go a day without hearing about the events that had transpired during that days meeting. Much to the relief of fans, players, and owners nationwide the issues were sorted out and football went on with minor setbacks. Setbacks include no spring camp for Rookies, and really no time to work on plays with players. These issues did not affect many new rookies coming into the League. Famous Quarterback Cam Newton threw for 4,354 yards and 22 touchdowns. Where Tim Tebow in his sophomore became the first quarterback in history to take his team to the playoffs, win a game, and get traded the next season. Because of the timing of this trade, many critics blame the lockout for the situation. To use a famous quote from Mr. Willie Wonka Where we go, nobody knows, much to the anger of the 120 million plus sports fans nationwide. Maybe one day people will be happy with what they have and when they think that the status quo should change they do it peacefully. This reporters advice to the owners and players union is take it out on the field. That is where things can be really settled. So next time the NBA has a lockout the owners should play a game against their players. This would end a lot of fans hearts being broken and dreams being crushed into shards of broken hopes. BY TYLER GALBREATH

The famous saying All good things must come to an end has held true throughout history. In recent years there have been numerous lockouts is sports despite fans protest. One famous myth of lockouts is that it is the players fault, the truth is that it is the owners who start the lockouts to stop a strike from players. Since the first US league lockout in 1994 sports have had an increasing number of lockouts. The first lockout happened during the 1994 MLB playoffs. Before the lockout Cleveland who had been in last place all season long made a mad dash towards the finish line gaining what was to be an inevitable playoff berth. They had put on the greatest show of winning since the New York Mets of 1969, who went from last place in the MLB to winning the World Series. To this day we will never know what would have become of the ill-fated season. Because of this baseball lost a lot of respect and popularity within the American populace. Yet this is not always the case for every sport. The NBA has experienced three lockouts the most recent being this past year, and they still reported record turnout. The NHL has had two lockouts and even had to cancel an entire season because they owners and players could not reach an agreement. Despite this, the NHL has not experienced losses in turnout.

Boise run down: So far the BSU season is doing just what the sports analysis have predicted after BSU lost all the few seniors on offenses and a majority of the senior defense. In Boises off season they had a successful conference change. After more than one successful seasons the Boise State Broncos wished to move on to bigger and better competitions. The Big East promised more money and a clear road to a championship if they were successful. Boise has met the challenge they were looking for and this season is promised to be a difficult one for the Broncos. Boise started off this season against an impressive 13th ranked Michigan State team, unfortunately they did not win, and anyone could tell they were a different team without Kellen More and Doug Martian. Week two Boise came out with a chip on their shoulders and took it to Miami Ohio with a powerful 39-12 win. It was also their 11th straight home opener win. The next week would have equal results with a 7-6 victory over BYU. This was a close game, Boise only scoring on an interception return in the third quarter. Seniors, be a part of...

The list of talented senior athletes from Canyon Ridge may go on and on, but there is one senior girl that stands out among the rest. Megan Mayo, senior, has been the captain of the swim team for three years. Mayo has been swimming for nine years and is now the Senior Representative of the Marlins swim team. Megan has been to state for swimming for the past three years and plans to go once again as a senior. Unlike other sports where an athlete qualifies for a team event or one individual event, Megan has qualified in five different events to go to state. She not only has been a Varsity swimmer all four years of her high school career, but has also lettered in water polo, track, and soccer. Megan is a busy student athlete that is involved in

many organizations. Not only does Megan work as a lifeguard and swim instructor at the YMCA, she also takes part of National Honor Society, Business Professionals of America, and she is the Twin Falls School District Student Representative for the Idaho Leads Project. She is enrolled in several advanced courses and has a full schedule between school, extracurricular activities, and the time that she values with her family. Megan is currently considering Oklahoma State University, Utah State University, University of Utah, and Tulane University as far as college is concerned. She doesnt want to go to college to swim but if she were offered a scholarship, shed think about it. Her favorite hobby is to read and collect quotes that are inspirational and help her through life and to put the quotes in an overflowing binder. Right

now, her favorite color is yellow and her favorite animal is not a fish like most would expect, but a pig. She really enjoys any school function but she especially loves school dances because she loves to dance awkwardly. Forced to pick a dwarf from Snow White, Megan said she would most likely be Bashful because she turns red at pretty much anything. Megans advice to underclassmen or anyone in general with a task that needs to get done would be, The best way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing. She explained, That quote has really been my motto throughout high school because I have so much going on that I freak out and put everything off if I think too much. It always helps to just start doing what needs to get done and work through it. Megan has maintained her 4.0 gpa throughout her high school career.

The words we

leave behind shape our memories.

Please hurry and get them turned into the front o ce or to Mrs Reichenbach in room #413 with your name clearly written on the photos and quote.
*If you have any questions, ask Samantha Jackson or Jessica Renaldi.

One of the major leaders of the football team, Andy Powlus has played football since sixth grade. Being on the varsity football team for three years and being involved with school activities since he was a freshman, Andy is a prime example of what a Riverhawk student should be. Andy is all about the team and supporting his fellow football players. Andy has been involved in multiple school activities since he was a freshman. He has been a member of the wrestling team and football

throughout his high school career. Andy would love to play football during college but right now he is planning on going to the College of Southern Idaho for a semester then going on a two year mission for his church. Andy loves snowboarding and goes multiple times during the winter. He really enjoys just hanging out with all of his friends. He also enjoys singing in the shower. His major hobby is football and fellow Hawks might recognize him as the player who pounced on the football after Junior Vincent Burke stripped it from a Burley running back during

Homecoming. Andy is just one of the reasons why The Ridge enjoyed their first ever win at Homecoming. Andys motto in life and advice to any underclassmen involved in anything at all is, If you want something, go get it! Andy doesnt believe in doing the job halfway and encourages everyone to just lay it on the line. There isnt any point in doing things partly complete in his world. Andy is a easily recognizable senior athlete around school and is a role model for any underclassmen who want to achieve goals during their high school career.
