Module Submission Document for H13IDT Industrial Training (Completed) Year 10/11

Total Credit: 0 Level: 3 Status: Live Taught Semester and Assessment Period: Summer vacation period and assessed prior to beginning of Autumn Semester. Session Availability: Every year. Pre-requisite(s): A good grounding in all aspects of the relevant engineering discipline of study at undergraduate level. Co-requisite(s): None. Expected Number of Students Taking Module: Any number. Is this a Cap?: No. Restriction for Cap: None. Target Students: B/MEng students studying within the Faculty of Engineering at the Malaysia Campus. Other Regulations: This module should be taken after completing Part I and prior to the commencement of Part III of the students engineering course. Summary of Content: This module requires a student to complete a placement at an external organization carrying out professionally supervised practical training. The industrial training must last a minimum of twelve consecutive weeks in the same company or institution. While it is difficult to provide general criteria for the type of work performed, it is expected that the training will be relevant to the engineering discipline of study, as judged by the relevant Department. Secure an industrial placement with an external organization either locally, in the students home country, or any part of the world, subject to Departmental approval; Request an official employment letter from the external organization and submit it to the relevant Department Industrial Training Coordinator; Carry out a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks of professionally supervised practical training in the external organization; Log practical training records on a weekly basis using IEM Engineers Log; Meet with the visiting academic staff member if the industrial training is conducted in Malaysia; Prepare an industrial training report; Submit the following documents to the Faculty of Engineering after completing the industrial training period: - IEM Engineers Log with the company signature and stamp on each weekly training record; - An overall industrial training report with company signature and stamp on the cover page; - Supervisor evaluation form in a sealed envelope (participating company to pass it directly to the student); - Testimonial issued by the participating company, if any. Module Convenor: Ir Dr Chan Swee Huat Module Contribution: Essential requirement for accreditation of MEng programmes by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). Administration Details: Fully administrated by Faculty of Engineering, Malaysia Campus. Aims: to expose students to the practical working environment; to expose students to specific practices in their respective areas of specialization; to increase the student's knowledge, skills and experience of industry;

to produce graduates with the competencies expected by employers; to increase employment opportunities; to forge a closer network between the university and industry.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and understanding of - scientific concepts, principles and theories; - principles of design applied to conceptual and detailed design; - management and business techniques and practices; and - quality, health, safety and environmental considerations, including professional, legal and ethical responsibilities and risk management. Intellectual skills ability to - select and apply scientific and engineering principles to model, analyse and solve problems; - design and evaluate systems, processes and components to satisfy a need; - be creative in the planning, execution and reporting of investigations requiring the application of engineering knowledge and understanding; and - apply management methods to the evaluation of resource, quality, health, safety, risk and environmental issues associated with engineering. Professional practical skills ability to - generate and process experimental and survey data including an evaluation of the results and their validity; - appreciate the role and use of codes of practice, industry standards and other sources of information; - apply engineering techniques taking into account industrial and commercial constraints; and - carry out risk assessments and use technical equipment safely in laboratory, project and field work. General transferable skills ability to - use creativity, innovation and critical judgment in solving problems with limited or contradictory information and transfer the solutions as appropriate; - communicate effectively in a variety of ways, including written, oral, pictorial and graphical means, for engineering, construction and business purposes; - manage time and resources in personal plans and work to deadlines; and - work independently and in teams in a range of roles.
