PROS AND CONS OF BEING A TIP SCHOLAR

CHAPTER 1 Introduction Education is a very important thing not only for the family, but also the development of the country. The government find ways to improve the quality of education, considering there are a lot of colleges and universities all over the country especially in the area of Metro Manila. These schools have their own ways or strategies to convince students to enroll in their school and one of these schools/colleges is the Technological Institute of the Philippines. One of the schools missions is to give higher quality of education within reach of Filipinos. With that, they provide various scholarship grants and student assistant to deserving students. Some of these are the Engr. Demetrio and Dr. Teresita scholarship; Valedictorian and Salutatorian scholarships; Deans, VPAAs, or Presidents List; or Student Assistant (SA). Through this, they encourage many students to pursue their education with quality despite dealing with financial problems. The study will be conducted to investigate the pros and cons of being a TIP scholar. It will identify the awareness of respondents, which is composed of 2 nd year TIP-QC students studying in the current academic year. These respondents are scholars and mostly from the Society of Scholar (S.O.S.). This research aims to provide more information to the readers. It will focus on the perceptions and knowledge of the respondents regarding the subject matter. The particular outcome of the study will tell the pros and cons, or the advantages and disadvantages of being a TIP scholar.

Definition of Terms For further understanding of this research paper, the researchers decided to define some used words which will be for the convenience of other readers. Program is the TIPs new term for course; it is a series of sessions that students attend to learn a course (former subject), often as a part of a school curriculum that leads to a degree or a certificate. Pros and Cons is the argument for and against something. Scholars are students, especially one who earns high grades. Scholarship is a sum of money awarded to a student to help with living expenses, study or travel.

CHAPTER 3 Review of Related Literature This chapter contains the related literature to show and explain the similarities of these to the study performed. For the purpose of preparing for the study to be performed, the researchers read different books and articles related to the topic. The researchers also consulted other literature that might help in the research. Related Literature During early time, the word scholar meant learned persons or specialists in a particular branch of knowledge (Encarta). Looking back in history, many scholars have lived. Plato, Socrates, and Aristotle are only some of them. They are individuals who spent their lives pursuing to gain knowledge, discovering and exploring the things around and continuously asking questions for the purpose of providing answers. They may also be called as Thinkers because that is what they do. Now, the contributions of these scholars made a mark in the different branches of science. It helped us to improve and develop ourselves and the world we are living as well. In present times, the word scholar means a student having a scholarship and one who earns high grades in the school as a requirement for maintaining the scholarship. Different companies, schools, institutions, and even the government give scholarships to help deserving students to pursue their study by financially assisting them. These scholarships are really important especially when a student is a college student.

PROS AND CONS OF BEING A TIP SCHOLAR

Scholarships or Financial Aids are money available to college and university students, through government loans, grants, and scholarships, which enable them to receive an education they could otherwise not afford (Encarta). It is a grant-in-aid to a student, as by a college or foundation (Merriam-Webster). Aside from financial aids, some scholarship source provide additional things like free uniform and free use of textbooks like in TIP, depending on the scholarship availed by the student. Having scholarship may be beneficial to the recipient. But the fact that everything has its own pros and cons, the following literatures are researched, prepared and showed to discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of being a scholar. Foreign Literature You may be wondering if getting a scholarship is all it's cracked up to be. Sure, it's always great to receive money that you're not expected to pay back, but are there any drawbacks to getting a scholarship. As it turns out there are pluses and minuses to receiving scholarship money. The obvious plus is that you get money that you need for school that you won't have to take out in the form of a loan. This money will go towards things like tuition, room and board, books, supplies, your computer, and anything else related to school. You definitely don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but there are some things that you'll be expected to do in order to receive the scholarship money, and keep receiving it each semester. Many scholarship awards have minimum requirements that you'll be expected to have in order to get the award in the first place, but you'll also be required to maintain these minimums each semester you expect to keep getting it. What's great about a scholarship is that it's usually not a one-off. You can renew it for JMJ Copyrights 2012 RPTL

PROS AND CONS OF BEING A TIP SCHOLAR

10

as long as you go to college, depending on if you keep your grades up and meet all other expectations. Some scholarships will want you to maintain a certain GPA, while others will expect you to get involved with extra-curricular activities or put in volunteer hours in order to get your money. (Lino) Lino added that if you come to rely on your scholarship money, but have a bad semester, it can be financially devastating having your money rescinded or not qualifying for it for future semesters. According to him, scholarships when compared to grants usually have more strings attached, but since they are renewable it balances out. When you receive a grant, many times it's a one-time award. If you want to receive it again you have to reapply and get re-accepted. The beauty of grants is that you rarely will have to do anything outside of applying for them. If you apply for a grant and are awarded the grant, the money just shows up either by direct deposit or in the form of a check. With a scholarship they will not only verify that you're eligible to receive it, they'll check with the school to make sure that you're still keeping your end of the bargain, and all money will be sent to the college directly to pay for things. You'll only get the leftovers to do with as you please. Lino concluded his article by stating that it's better to get a scholarship than to not get a scholarship. Just don't be surprised when you find out all of the other things that come with getting one. They are often glamorized and thought of as the Holy Grail of free money for college. Some scholarships cause stress in the form of keeping the minimum requirements. It's up to you to decide if it's worth it or not.

An article from scholarshipcenter.info stated that in scholarship, the students need not worry about finances throughout his college years. Almost thousands of student loans scholarships are made available yearly. The systems of the programs depend on the financial needs of a certain student. Although, it doesnt necessarily mean that you are not intelligent because you were not be able to acquire a scholarship. According to this article, there are various types of scholarship, one is for the intellectuals who acquire and maintain high grades. The other is the

specific scholarships designed for the ones who excel in definite fields, for instance, in the field of sports, math, science, music, stage performers and others. Those who belong in average I.Q. may still win a scholarship. They may not possess the remarkable level of intelligence to win a scholarship, but their talents may secure them one. Moreover, there are also scholarships designed for certain races, minorities, and other sectors of the society that needs monetary support. And scholarship is not just confined to college students, the students who would want to pursue further study may also benefit. There are also several institutions that offer scholarship programs to their members, examples of this are the religious organization and union groups, etc. The article advised that if you think you wont be legible for any scholarship, there is still one option student loans. Student loan is the financial aid given to the students to pay their tuition with the agreement to repay it with the corresponding interests in a given period. Scholarships do not require for repayment, but student loans do. The advantage of a student loan is that it will give you freedom to move as a regular student, without the pressure of maintaining high grades and you can do your other activities JMJ Copyrights 2012 RPTL

12

without thinking of the conflict in the training schedules. The hassle is when you would consider it, student loans need to be repaid the moment you graduate; you have to pay to the very last cent plus the interests. In the end of the article, it stated that if you are the bread winner of your family, paying for it will be another burden though you already have secured a job. Anyhow, it will depend on you, the important thing is you finish your college education and secure a diploma, be it from a Student Loan and Scholarship. The achievement of earning your college education amidst the hindrance of money is the thing you will always be proud of. A yearning for a private school scholarship demand something of parents, too, writes Jeanette Hill. It certainly sounds simple enough. Your child sits an exam and, if he or she performs well, the offer of a scholarship lands in your letterbox. Bingo! A place in a top school and you don't have to worry about the fees. Unfortunately, it is not that easy. If you're serious about putting forward your child as a scholarship candidate, you need to make an effort to understand the process so you can make an informed judgment on his or her suitability. Some parents, as stated in the article, adopt a "nothing to lose" approach to scholarships, but that can be misguided. Academic and general excellence scholarships are highly sought-after and are awarded only to the top of the tree. Keep in mind that your child could be a straight-A student, but still not be successful. There is little point in putting an average student through the testing process and, in some cases, it could be harmful. The tests are designed to identify the best academic performers, so the JMJ Copyrights 2012 RPTL

13

questions are difficult. A child who is not at that high level, but is faced with a test well beyond his or her capabilities, could suffer a serious dent to his or her confidence. If your child is a suitable candidate, ensure he or she is praised for the willingness to attempt the test, but hold back on any expectations. Not being among the elite few who receive a scholarship should never be seen as a failure. For general excellence scholarships according to Hill, a high level of academic ability is expected, along with factors such as a commitment to extra-curricular and community-based activities and leadership potential. With music, arts and sport, some schools offer the scholarship based purely on a student's ability or potential in that area, while some demand a strong academic record as well. In some cases, it fills a particular need. For example, a school may offer a scholarship to attract a flautist because its orchestra requires one. It is important for parents to understand that schools are not simply seeking the "brightest" candidates. Those short-listed on their exam performance will be interviewed, usually by the principal, who will be looking for qualities including a broad interest and knowledge base, interpersonal skills and a high participation level in all facets of school life. Hill reminded us to be aware that scholarships rarely cover full fees. If you feel confident about the decision to apply, gather all the necessary information and emphasize the importance of valuing the experience. Another article from scholarships.com stated that some students assume that scholarships are primarily designed for students who are in dire need of financial assistance. This is not the case. In fact, winning a scholarship will be beneficial to any JMJ Copyrights 2012 RPTL

14

student for several years following their receipt of the award. If you are on the fence about applying for scholarships and unwilling to commit your time to the process, consider these significant benefits before you miss your opportunity: Recognition. If you win a scholarship, you can give yourself a pat on the back. For some scholarships there are thousands of applicants. When you are recognized for your accomplishments it gives you the confidence to pursue other goals. It is very important for students to recognize their own potential early in their academic career so that they foster its growthreceiving recognition from an organization or company helps students take this step. Distinguish Your Achievements. Receiving a merit-based scholarship indicates that you stood out among your peers. The scholarship provider recognized this quality, and it is important that you now see it too. When you apply for colleges or jobs in the future, you have proof that in at least one area you can distinguish yourself from other peers. This knowledge will motivate you to challenge yourself to reach higher goals in your own life. Scholarships Provide You with Financial Support. Maybe you're one of the lucky students who aren't relying on financial aid to get through schoolif so, it does not mean that you can't benefit from a scholarship. Some scholarship offers send winners the reward directly. This is good news for students who don't need financial aid to pay tuition, as the money can be used to pay for other expenses associated with college. Instead of spending your earnings from a part-time job on

essentials like food and books, a scholarship lets you spend somebody else's cash! Scholarships Can Help You Get Into a Selective University. Universities prefer students who are distinguished and have been recognized for an accomplishment. Winning a scholarship is a big deal! Most colleges are looking to add students who will be positive contributors to their student body. A merit scholarship confirms that you are a capable student who would be a great addition to the school. Scholarships Make Your Resume Stand Out. Distinguishing your resume from those sent by hundreds of other applicants can be difficult. A scholarship can make it easy to make your resume stand out. Being recognized by someone else for your achievements is sometimes enough to get you in for an interview with a future employer. Looking for a job is hard work, but when you have plenty of achievements and qualifications it is much, much easier. Local Literature Being a scholar is hard to stand on. You are a scholar but there are task you are to face everyday. Other assumed it to be easy, but actually it is difficult (Allego). He also stated in his article that this is where he saw how strong he was. If he used to go directly home after class, now he used to arrive late. But it doesnt mean that he blame TIP Voice his organization. He stated that the organization help him a lot not only in his study but also himself. It helped him to work hard and not to complain easily. He then also learned that before you become a leader, you should be a good follower first.

It is said that scholarship is a free education for those students who wants to achieve the goal they prospect. It helps those students who are having financial problem when they are to enter College. The University of Southeastern Philippines is one of the universities that offer various scholarships. There are scholarships coming from institutions, politicians, government, and from the University itself. Almost all of these require a high grade. There are also scholars called subsidized, who are given financial assistance without the requirement of high grades. Scholars are fortunate because aside from the free tuition, others are to receive stipend (Adame). Despite these, she wondered why some scholars receive an INC mark and sometimes failing grades. She also wondered why there are scholars who are arrogant, not knowing what kind of scholarship they have. For how many students are now able to continue their study with the help of this? Assuming that there are no scholarships at this time, it is possible that only few will fortunately have career and prosperous life (Sillacay). She also said how lucky it is to be a scholar. Use it, develop it, and maintain it and you will be free from poverty. Called as scholars, free from tuition fee, the happiness of parents cant be equaled. Sillacay mentioned in another article how proud are the parents that their children are now able to study because of their childrens intelligence, industry and accuracy. She also mentioned that being a scholar is hard at first but would be pleasing in the end.

CHAPTER 5 Findings, Conclusion and Recommendations Findings This study is an attempt to know the feelings, perception, and knowledge of TIPQC scholar students from different programs about the pros and cons of being a TIP scholar. Using the descriptive-analytic design, the researchers designed a survey questionnaire that was answered by 20 respondents. The following are the findings from the survey conducted: There are 13 male and 7 female students with a total of 20 respondents. There are 15 students age 17 years old, 10 male and 5 female; 1 age 16 female student; 2 age 18 female student; 1 age 19 male student; and 1 age 20 female student. Most respondents are ECE students, 6 male and 3 female students, with a total of 9 respondents. Most respondents are Engr. Demetrio A. Quirino Jr. Scholars, 6 male and 1 female students, with a total of 7 respondents. The most advantage of being a TIP scholar are having free set of uniform with PE uniform and the free/discount tuition fees and/or basic miscellaneous fees, and the most disadvantage of being one is having failing grades. Conclusion The formulated hypothesis, which was the researchers will find that there are more advantages and benefits than disadvantages or inconvenience on being a scholar JMJ Copyrights 2012 RPTL

24

in TIP, was proven to be true. As shown in the tables of the data gathered in the survey and the interpretations of these tables, which was also reflected in the findings, it proved that even though there are some disadvantage of being a scholar, most of the respondents still agreed that there is still much more advantage of being one. That could be the reason why they applied for the scholarship and still continue to maintain it despite having different difficulties. The researchers therefore conclude that there are more pros than cons in being a TIP scholar. Recommendations Together with the conclusion stated, the researchers humbly recommend the following: For the government, have more programs which will raise the awareness of the students, especially those who are financially incapable, about having a good education without worrying much on the expense of it, for the betterment of the country. For the schools administrations, create better ways to encourage more students to apply for scholarships and have more benefits so that scholars will be encouraged to persevere with their scholarship and strive hard to maintain it. For the students, strive to study hard and maintain your scholarship, if you have, and apply for a scholarship, if you want to, so that you may have a good quality education despite dealing with some financial problems. For the next researchers, continue and have a deeper study regarding the topic of this research for the discovery of knowledge using newer and more relevant and accurate information.
