The conservation of natural resources is the fundamental problem. Unless we solve that problem, it will avail us little to solve all others. - Theodore Roosevelt

One of Laguna Phukets CSR is to conserve the environment. Environmental Conservation efforts emphasize raising awareness on climate change and human impact on local natural resources. In partnering with local conservation efforts, Laguna Phuket supports various initiatives that ensure sustainable rehabilitation of marine and shoreline resources around Phuket Island. One of their advocacies is Mangrove tree planting. Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees that grow in tropical and subtropical seashores. These areas are hard-hitting places for plants to grow. Mangroves can thrive in salty water and survive in harsh conditions because of their strong roots that can filter the salinity of the sea and only consume the fresh water it needs. Aside from its ability to stand against the salty water of the sea, Mangrove is also well known to contribute to the overall health of the coastal area by providing food, shelter and environmental protection for marine organisms, nest dwellers and even humans living near seashores. Laguna Phuket management and employees planted 2,500 mangrove saplings at Ao Naam Bor Village, Wichit Sub-District, Phuket. This activity is part of Laguna Phukets Helping to Support a Green Community initiative. Since 2007, Laguna Phuket has worked with Phuket Mangrove Station 23 and to date has planted more than 10,300 mangrove trees (Laguna Resort & Hotels, 2012). Another of the resorts advocacies is the annual sea turtle release ceremony wherein hundreds of young turtles are released. The batch of turtles released into the sea included two fitted with satellite tracking devices, enabling data on their migration patterns to be collected as part of the Phuket Marine Biological Centres turtle research program. This program aims to raise awareness on the plight of sea turtles among community members and tourists, and to raise funds for the Phuket Marine Biological Centre and Third Area Naval Command for sea turtle conservation projects. Tracking devises are also given to these young turtles that will enable researchers to monitor juvenile turtles on their feeding ground, migration pattern, and survival rate. The turtle release program predominantly includes Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia mydas), Olive Ridley Turtles (Lepidochelys olivacea) and Hawksbill Turtles (Eretmochelys imbricate). Another species found in this region is the Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), but this is now so rare that there is no dedicated program.
