An Election Year Prayer

from the Faithful Witness of Catholics in the USA
by his Eminence Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke O Lord Jesus Christ, You alone are the Way, the Truth and the Life. In Your church You show us the Way. You teach us the Truth, and You give us Your Life. Grant, we humbly beg You, that, always and in all things, we may be faithful to You in Your Holy Church and to Your Vicar on Earth, the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI. Grant also, we beg You, that, in these times of decision, all who profess to be Catholic and who are entrusted with the sacred duty to participate in public life, may by the strength of Your grace, unwaveringly follow Your Way and faithfully adhere to Your Truth, living in You with all their mind and heart, for Your greater glory, the salvation of souls, and the good of our nation. Amen. Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of America, Pray for us. Saint Thomas More, Patron of Religious Freedom. Pray for us.

OLP Adult Education: Catechism for Busy Catholics

Material liberally taken from A Biblical Walk through the Mass by Edward Sri, Ascension Press, 2011

The Liturgy of the Word First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Second Reading, Gospel, Homily Creed, Prayer of the Faithful
First Reading: is always taken from the Old Testament, except during the Easter season when readings come from the Acts of the Apostles. Readings from the Old Testament help us enter the story of Israel and see the unity of the Bible more clearly. These readings correspond thematically to the Gospel reading for the day, illustrating emphasis, contrast or continuity. The Word of the Lord is a triumphant exclamation, reminding us how marvelous it is that we should hear God speak to us through Scripture. Responsorial Psalm: We are not expected to respond to the word of God in our own words, so we use the inspired words taken from among the 150 psalms. The verse and response format is an example of the liturgical dialogue that occurs over and over again during the Mass. Second Reading: Taken from the New Testament other than the four gospels, these readings are often independent of the first reading and gospel and reflect on the mystery of Jesus Christ and His saving work and the meaning it has for our lives. Gospel: The Gospels hold a special place in Scripture because they tell of Jesus. We stand to indicate our reverence and respect for the real presence of Jesus in the Word. We sing Alleluia in praise, the priest processes to the pulpit with the Book of Gospels, greets us again, and we all make three signs of the cross on our foreheads, lips and hearts that His message remain in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts all because we are going to encounter Jesus in the sacred moment when the Gospel is read. We do not read about Jesus, but listen to Him speak to us personally in the immediacy of His presence in the Word. Homily: In Greek, homily means explanation. From ancient times, the Gospel reading was followed by an explanation. It was an opportunity to instruct the faithful that they might apply the lessons of the Gospels to their own lives. The Creed: Although non-biblical, the Creed summarizes salvation history as told in Scripture beginning with creation. It grounds us in the reality of our beliefs and reminds us that choices do matter. We acknowledge that our little lives are caught up in a much larger story and think about the time when we will stand before Jesus who will judge the living and the dead. When we say, I believe, we are not only affirming an intellectual acknowledgement of the existence of God, but also our commitment to entrust our lives to God. We repeat the Creed every week not because we might have changed our beliefs from the week before, but because we need to recall the beliefs that should be guiding and informing our lives. Prayer of the Faithful: This is one of the most ancient parts of the Mass. These are intercessory prayers offered for the Church, for others as well as for ourselves. Saying these prayers provides the opportunity for lay people to exercise their priestly function (we are a chosen race, a royal priesthood- 1 Peter 2:9) We participate in Jesus priestly prayer for the whole human family. The Catechism notes that praying for others is a sign of a heart attuned to Gods mercy. After being formed by the Word of God, the faithful respond with the heart and mind of Jesus and pray for the needs of the Church and of the world; they look after not only their own interests and concerns, but after the interests of others
