Thank You

for your generous support of Hope Through Housing

HopethroughHousing
Your generous support of National Community Rennaisance (CORE) and Hope Through
Housing means a great deal to the thousands of children, parents, and senior citizens
we serve. On behalf of our staff and residents, I want to extend our sincere appreciation.

Since my arrival at Hope Through Housing three years ago, Hudson Housing Capital
has been an invaluable partner. Together, we provide opportunities to thousands of
individuals not only in need of affordable housing, but also in need of vital services such
as access to healthcare, free meal programs, and career preparation training. Giving
families a safe place to live, preparing high-risk youth for work and college, and helping
seniors maintain their independence are just a few of our many accomplishments.

On the following pages you will see the faces and hear the voices of individuals who
exemplify the difference we make every day thanks to partners like you. We look
forward to sharing more stories like these in the future.

Hope Through Housing
Miguel, 12

Miguel and his grandmother are very proud

of his 3.0 grade point average, but Miguel
didn’t always earn good grades.

After receiving three F’s on last Fall’s report

card, he decided to make a change. Miguel
made a resolution to himself to “not end up
like my brother ,” who, at 14, is failing
school and involved with a gang. At-risk students get help with homework and
build positive relationships that help them
Miguel now attends the After School and succeed in school and life.
Beyond Program at Sierra Vista. He has a
safe environment as well as plenty of time to
complete his homework. Miguel likes coming
to the program. “The mentors are nice. I can
get my homework done and hang out with
my friends.”

In the evenings, he has time to practice the

trumpet and the baritone he plays in the
school band. He wants to attend college and
thinks he can best help kids by becoming a
police officer.
Icela, 9

“Without help in the After School and Beyond

program I would be in summer school.”

Cynthia, 14

“I wouldn’t have passed the 8th grade without

After School and Beyond.”

Hudson Housing Capital makes a difference in

the lives of students who receive help with
their school work.
Madelin, 10

Madelin was born with serious health

problems and has endured more than 10
surgeries, including several open-heart
operations. She missed a substantial amount
of school and fell behind in most subjects,
especially reading.

The specialized instruction at After School

and Beyond helped Madelin significantly
increase her reading comprehension. As a
result Madelin experienced a renewed sense of
motivation and self-esteem.

Tutoring after school helps students catch up

if they have fallen behind. The result is
often better grades and a new confidence
that carries over to other areas.

Frank, Father of One

Frank came to Sierra Vista with his daughter,

Mariah, 11, after being displaced by
Hurricane Katrina. “It’s a safe place—I feel
secure in letting my daughter attend the
program. I’ve noticed a big improvement in my
daughter’s confidence, self esteem and
performance in class. Her fifth grade teacher
said Mariah is more proactive in class and her
participation increased tremendously.”

talking about college!”

Parents have peace of mind knowing their

children are safe and well supervised in
quallity programs offered through the
generous support of Hudson Housing Capital
and other philanthropists.
Joanne

Joanne’s income is limited, but she doesn’t

want for anything in her life. “I’d been
depressed, and the doctor urged me to
participate more in programs offered on site.
Now I go to every building, and all the events
I can. It’s better than any pill. I have friends in
all the buildings.”

Studies show that isolation leads to health

decline in seniors. Hope offers programs that
bring seniors together so they stay active
and involved.
Marshall

Food is purchased and delivered to Cathedral

Palms for distribution to over 50 disabled and
senior residents. Some residents rely heavily
on this food to make ends meet. Other
residents use this as an opportunity to give
back. Marshall regularly assists with this
program. “It’s important to me because
I don’t like just sitting around the house. I was
raised to give to those that are in need.”

Proper nutrition and exercise keep seniors fit

and healthy. In partnership with donors like
Hudson Housing Capital, Hope offers nutrition
and health education as well as health screenings.
Bertha

Bertha is not yet ready to claim she speaks

English, but she is enrolled in ESL classes
and is committed to becoming fluent.
Her dream of becoming a citizen is within reach
thanks to citizenship classes offered where
she lives.

Joan

Joan, who has owned several book stores in

the past, decided to use her professional skills
to restock a library in the Community Room.
She contacted the local library and selected
and arranged for the delivery of more than
100 new books. Within three days, every book
was checked out.

On-site libraries, classes and computer

centers allow seniors to stay connected
with others and learn.
Thank You.
“Without a sense of caring,
there can be no sense of community.”
