In creating my first order I had several things in mind. First, in our School Improvement Plan (SIP) this year Science is a high priority. This is mainly due to the fact that science will count towards AYP in the 5th grade this year. We are also putting an emphasis on social studies. We have found that for the past 3 years we have focused on Math and Reading to the point that science and social studies have been neglected. For this order I focused mainly on science. I chose specific standards from each grade level and choose books that supported those standards. Some of the standards I chose were:

SKE1. Students will describe time patterns (such as day to night and night to day) and objects (such as sun, moon, stars) in the day and night sky. SKE2. Students will describe the physical attributes of rocks and soils. S1E1. Students will observe, measure, and communicate weather data to see patterns in weather and climate. S1E2. Students will observe and record changes in water as it relates to weather. S1P2. Students will demonstrate effects of magnets on other magnets and other objects. S2P1. Students will investigate the properties of matter and changes that occur in objects. S2L1. Students will investigate the life cycles of different living organisms. S3E1. Students will investigate the physical attributes of rocks and soils. S3P2. Students will investigate magnets and how they affect other magnets and common objects. S4E1. Students will compare and contrast the physical attributes of stars, star patterns, and planets.

S4E2. Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar system and will explain the role of relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the moon. a. Explain S4E3. Students will differentiate between the states of water and how they relate to the water cycle and weather. S4E4. Students will analyze weather charts/maps and collect weather data to predict weather events and infer patterns and seasonal changes.

The second area I focused on was social studies. I used the same method to choose these books. I chose several standards from 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and picked books to support those standards. Some standards used were: SS5H5 The student will explain how the Great Depression and New Deal affected the lives of millions of Americans. SS5H7 The student will discuss the origins and consequences of the Cold War.

SS4H2 The student will describe European exploration in North America.

SS3H1 The student will explain the political roots of our modern democracy in the United States of America.

This order also includes videos from School Library. The videos were chose to support the same standards the books supported. I also chose books to support our math SIP goals. Our students often struggle in math and it is generally a major focus of our SIP. These books were chosen to help teachers support their students in math.
