Structure of the LGBT+ Community of the Union of UEA Students And useful contacts. The LGBT+ Community is made up of every student at UEA who self-defines as the following: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, undecided, questioning, or queer, or who self-define as any other marginalised romantic/sexual orientation or gender identity (including, but not limited to; asexual, pansexual, bigender, and genderqueer), or who choose not to define their romantic/sexual or gender identity. This follows from the definitions of the NUS LGBT movement. However, at UEA we also very much welcome LGBT+ Allies to join the community and support its events and goals. Whilst allies cannot stand for election to the position of LGBT+ Officer or NUS LGBT Conference Delegate, we encourage them to stand for certain Pride Committee positions and to actively get involved with the running of events, groups and campaigns. The Communitys representative on Union committees is the LGBT+ Officer. They are elected during the Unions general election in the second semester. Under the constitution of the Union of UEA Students, the job description of the LGBT+ Officer is:

To represent the interests of LGBT+ students and be their voice on the issues they face as LGBT+ students at university. Engage with the University and other organisations to achieve improvements for LGBT+ students on the issues they face as LGBT+ students at university. Convene and co-ordinate the Unions LGBT+ Committee. Be the Unions delegate to the NUS LGBT Conference.

The trustees of the Union have delegated their powers with regard to the LGBT+ Community to the LGBT+ Officer, who, according to an interpretation of the constitution, is the LGBT committee (mentioned above) in its entirety. The constitution is very precise as to the formation of this committee, therefore it has been impossible to form. UEA Pride exists as the social and support part of the community. It elects its committee each year around March, this is not part of the Unions general election. It elects a President, Treasurer, Secretary, Publicity Officer, Social Secretary, and 4 Welfare Officers. On this committee the LGBT+ Officer sits ex officio by virtue of their general election. Traditionally the LGBT+ Officer uses the Pride Committee as a steering group for advice on campaigns. Therefore the Pride Committee acts in its own capacity, and as the steering committee for campaigns.
