Poster Roger Vadim directed a Franco-italian science fiction film, which was based on French comics named Barbarella.

Vadim was a French direct as well as a journalist and author. After having worked with director Marc Allegret as an assistant, he then produced and directed his first film And God Created Woman that allowed him to earn enough money to make more films. The story is not really important and doesn't make the film memorable, however it's adventurous. "The plot is blissfully dispensable" (GUTHMANN, 1994) Barbarella, an agent travels to another galaxy looking for a missing scientist named Durand Durand. She is soon knocked unconscious by some girls who hit her.Mark hand, a keeper of feral children who later have sex with Barbarella. After leaving Mark to continue her adventure, she gets knocked unconscious and saved from some black guards by Pygar, a blind angel, who makes love to her. She is then captured in Sogo, a city ruled by the Great Tyrant, taken away from the angel and placed in a cage to be pecked by birds.

Dildano, the leader of the resistance to the Great tyrant rescued her and accepts to help her find the scientist if she helps him depose the Great Tyrant. She got given an invisible key to access the Tyrant's Chamber of Dreams but gets captured by the Concierge who turns out to be Durand Durand. He locked Barbarella in the Chamber and rushes to make himself the lord of the city when the Mathmos consumes the city and the scientist. The angel flies Barbarella and the Great Tyrant safely. The use of textures, colours and different kind of costumes makes the set look nicely disarranged. "The sets are designed with gorgeously deranged excess Barbarellas spaceship comes with pink carpeted roofs and walls; theres a journey down into a beautiful crystalline labyrinth; and the Queens bedroom is a stand-out with giant lenses, psychedelic backprojections and a gilt-painted bed shaped in a female form. Jane Fonda seems to go through a costume change about every five minutes fishnets and plastic bras, giant-spotted cat tails, thighlength boots, navel-length V-necks. The city is the kind of place where the populace can wear negligees, feather boas, leather jockstraps, giant lip-shaped headdresses, vertical plaits and plastic unicorn horns with perfect harmony."(Scheib 1999-2012)

Though the period the film was shot in was considered as the sexual revolution, in which the western world has known a social movement to increase the acceptance and normalization of the different forms of sexuality and breakdown into the sexual freedom, the film Barbarella is way too exaggerated making Jane Fonda regret making the film. "Why did Jane make a film like this? Even she does not know herself. As the retrospective guest of honor at the San Francisco Film Festival in 1994, she was asked 'where was her head'? 'I don't know -- up my armpit, I guess,' Fonda responded. 'We all make mistakes. In my case, I keep getting my nose rubbed them.' (Moira Sullivan, 2002)
