Wear purple on designated
Alzheimers awareness day
The Alzheimers Association
Delaware Valley Chapter urges
South Jersey residents and busi-
ness, educational and community
organizations to wear purple, the
organizations signature color, on
Monday, Nov. 5. The day has been
designated as New Jersey
Alzheimers Disease Awareness
Day.
On April 9, 2007, then-New Jer-
sey Governor Jon Corzine signed
into law legislation that desig-
nates the first Monday in Novem-
ber as Alzheimers Disease
Awareness Day in New Jersey.
Wearing purple on Nov. 5 will cre-
ate awareness and a show of sup-
port for the Alzheimers Associa-
tions vision to live in a world
without Alzheimers.
Today there are an estimated
85,000 individuals living with
Alzheimers disease or related
disorder in South Jersey. As the
rate of Alzheimers increases, the
need for awareness and education
for the degenerative brain disease
also increases. There are 5.4 mil-
lion cases of Alzheimers in the
United States and every 68 sec-
onds someone is diagnosed. The
Alzheimers Association esti-
mates, by 2050, as many as 16 mil-
lion people will develop the dis-
ease. Alzheimers is the nations
sixth-leading cause of death and
remains incurable, untreatable
and unpreventable. It is extreme-
ly vital that research is conducted
for the disease and that more peo-
ple are made aware of the facts
surrounding Alzheimers.
The Alzheimers Association
Delaware Valley Chapter reminds
the South Jersey community at
large that by wearing purple on
Nov. 5, they will have helped the
Alzheimers Association raise
awareness and provide education
for thousands of those suffering
with the disorder as well as their
caregivers, family members, and
friends.

with 12 reported cases compared

suspect.
An additional arrest followed

ing to Kehoe, a majority of the
property stolen was returned.
According to the report, there
were four weapons incidents

to one in 2010. Of the incidents, a
weapon was used in a fight. Three
people were reported for posses-
sion of a weapon, including a
throwing star, a razor blade and a
knife.
There were 47 instances of sub-
stance abuse throughout the dis-
trict, down from 54 cases in 2010-
2011.
We had a decrease in number
from previous years, said Kehoe.
We had a decrease in substance
abuse with seven less, an increase
in possession incidents with five
more, eight less in confirmed sub-
stance abuse cases and four less
distribution incidents.

The Tabernacle Sun
The violence and vandalism report was
presented to the Tabernacle board of edu-
cation at the Oct. 15 meeting.
According to the presentation, districts
are required to report to the board and the
community in October to summarize the
monthly violence to identify the efforts of
the district to address violence and vandal-
ism concerns, and to generate discussion
about the districts efforts.
Violence and vandalism incidents are
broken down into four categories, violence,
vandalism, weapons and substance abuse.
According to George Rafferty superintend-
ent of schools, substance abuse are any
items deemed inappropriate, including al-
cohol or prescription drugs.
According to the presentation, the num-
ber of cases has dropped over the past year.
There were 15 documented incidents of vi-
olence in 2011 and 12 incidents of violence
in 2012. In 2011, there were three reported
cases of substance violations and one re-
ported case in 2012. There was one instance
of vandalism reported in 2011 and no cases
of weapons or vandalism reported in 2012.
If a student is accused of making a
threat to another student, its reported and
taken care of, said Rafferty. Weve had a
little bit of everything, especially at the
middle school.
Incidents documented as violent include
students taking belongings from another
student. According to Rafferty, items stolen
worth more than $10 must be reported. The
school handles the case, and the items are
recovered.
The monthly Harassment, Intimidation
and Bullying report was included in the vi-
olence and vandalism report.
The district handled cases through out-
of-school and in-school suspensions, in ad-
dition to eight programs to assist students
needs, including instruction, support serv-
ices, assignments, full-time counseling
through Olweus Bully Prevention, inter-
vention and referral services committees,

lection Day is less than two
weeks away. Are you ready to
cast your vote? Do you know
where each of the candidates stands
on the issues important to you?
If not, its not too late.
Todays technology makes it relative-
ly easy for voters to get at least a basic
understanding of political candidates
and their positions on the issues.
Want news coverage? A lot of the
stories that have been written can still
be found on news organizations web-
sites.
Want to get information straight
from the candidates? At least in the
bigger races, they have websites of
their own. Now, we all have to take
what we find at candidates websites
with a little skepticism. After all, its
their website. And they are going to
make the best of it.
Still, one usually is able to get a good
idea of what someone will do if he or
she is elected and be able to compare it
to his or her opponent.
Whats most important is to get as
much information as possible before
entering the voting booth. Dont cast a
vote without understanding the issues
on the table and what each of the can-
didates has to say about those issues.
In many, if not most races, there are
clear differences between those hoping
to win on Election Day. Your votes will
impact your government.
The presidential election naturally
attracts the most attention, but dont
forget about local elections, too.
While more people traditionally
show up at the polls when there is a
major office up for grabs, chances are
your local municipal governing body
or school board will have more of an
impact on your everyday life. Property
taxes, government services such as po-
lice, fire, street repair and the well-
being of your school system all are in
the hands of your local leaders.
So take a few minutes to get to know
the candidates who want your vote.
Then be sure to show up and cast your
ballot.
in our opinion
Decision time
With Election Day fast approaching, are you ready to cast an informed vote?
Study, then vote
Todays technology makes it possible
for everyone to get a good idea of
where candidates stand on important
issues. Take the time to research the
hopefuls before you make the trek to
the voting booth.
Election letters
This edition of The Sun will be the last
edition in which letters to the editor
regarding the November election will
appear. We will continue to post letters

ing, responsive classroom and de-

parent/student handbook, TES
and OMS initiatives.
With 800 students and only 12
instances reported over a year, it
isnt too bad, said Rafferty.
The superintendents report in-
cluded a special presentation of
the student performance on the
New Jersey Assessment Skills
and Knowledge standardized test-
ing for third through eighth
grade.
Our strongest suit by far is in
fourth and eighth grade sciences.
Ninety-nine percent of our fourth
graders and 98 percent of our
eighth graders were proficient,
said Rafferty. Were really proud
of that.
Math scores were around and
above the state average, and com-
prehensive to districts in the
area. The special education class-
es out performed area schools
and reached state average, as
well.
Were pleased theyre doing
well at the state level and at or
above other districts around us,
said Rafferty.
In other news: the special edu-
cation program will be imple-
menting an iPad initiative by pro-
viding iPads to teachers from pre-
school to eighth grade. The iPads
will be funded though grant
money, according to Rafferty.
The board approved a new in-
terim business administrator
slated to begin on Nov. 1. Carol
Mascioli will be employed to as-
sist the school through June 30,
2013, or until the school can hire a
