Quality Control Department

PROCEDURE No. PWHT-1 rev. 2 Page 2 of 3

This procedure covers the Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) of welded fabrications. PWHT variables includes the rates of heating and cooling the weldment in accordance with ASME Section VIII, Division 1, UW-40. 1.0 Procedure: 1.1 PWHT PREREQUISITES: 1.1.1 The temperature of the furnace shall not exceed 800oF (427oC) at the time the vessel or part is placed in it. 1.1.2 During the heating and holding periods, the furnace atmosphere shall be controlled in such a manner to avoid excessive surface oxidation of the item subject to PWHT. The furnace shall be of such design as to prevent direct impingement of the flame on the vessel. Items subject to PWHT shall be supported during PWHT as necessary to prevent distortion.

1.1.3 1.2

HEATING RATES: 1.2.1 Below 800oF (427oC) - The heating rate need not be less than 100oF (38oC)/Hr. 1.2.2 Above 800oF (427oC) Above 800oF (427oC): 400oF (204oC) per hour per inch of thickness; not to exceed 400oF (204oC)/hr. During the heating period there shall not be a greater variation of temperature throughout the portion of the vessel being heated than 250oF (121oC) within any 15 foot (457 cm) interval of length.

1.3

SOAK TEMPERATURE: 1.3.1 P1 Material: 1100-1200oF (593 - 649oC) 1.3.2 P3 Material: 1100-1200oF (593 - 649oC) 1.3.3 P4 Material: 1100-1200oF (593 - 649oC) 1.3.4 P5A, P5B Group 1 and P5C Group 1 Material: 1250-1350oF (677 - 732oC) 1.3.5 P5B Material: 1300-1400oF (704 - 760oC) HOLDING TIME: 1.4.1 Thickness < 2 inches (50.8 mm): 1 Hour per inch (25.4 mm) of thickness; 15 minutes minimum. 1.4.2 Thickness > 2 inches (50.8 mm): 2 Hours plus 15 minutes per inch (25.4 mm) above 2 inches (50.8mm). COOLING RATE: 1.5.1 Above 800oF (427oC): 500oF (260oC) per hour per inch (25.4 mm) of thickness; not to exceed 500oF (260oC)/hr. During the heating period there shall not be a greater variation of temperature throughout the portion of the vessel being heated than 250oF (121oC) within any 15 foot (457 cm) interval of length. 1.5.2 Below 800oF (427oC): Cooled in still furnace air
