About MASSoc
Welcome to the Malaysian and Singaporean Society of the University of Leeds!! Our main aim is to provide a sense of belonging to the Malaysian and Singaporean students in Leeds as well to promote the beautiful colours & cultures of Malaysia and Singapore to everyone in the UK. We have an array of members of different nationalities and religions and anybody can join us. We have numerous activities every year, covering all types of interests from trips to night outings to cultural events. Annually, the Games never fail to attract sports enthusiasts from various societies and institutions around the UK as they gather on this very day to battle to be the very best! Last years Games absolutely tingled with excitement as hundreds of people came together to fill the day with purpose, fun, as well as earth-shattering cheers; and this years Games promises you nothing less! So, be it as a contender or merely as a cheerleader, don't you miss out on the chance to participate in this year's Games! Gear up those muscles because the competition will surely be tough. Registration
Registration is open to players of all ages, university and nationality. Player registration and payment must be done online and before the midnight of the 21st of October. Non MASSoc members will need to pay an extra 1. Late registration will incur a penalty fine. Thorough step-by-step instructions on how to register will be available online, most easily found through the Massoc Games 2012 Facebook event page. https://www.facebook.com/events/431581780212897/?fref=ts Players can register for more than one sport, provided that it does not clash with another. For example, joining futsal and basketball will allow you to play for both. Mixed doubles badminton and table tennis happens simultaneously and will clash. No refunds or accommodation by postponing the match will be given. If the player faces having to choose to play more than one sport at a time, the match not played will be forfeited and a walkover given to the opponent. Players not from Leeds from other universities should contact MASSoc directly so that we may make special arrangements for your party.

Rules and Regulations General


i. ii. iii. All participants must abide by University, Edge and MASSoc rules at all times. All players should register at the Edge at the given time (start of the Games, 8.30 am) regardless of their respective event time. All players MUST be at their event venue on time and ready to play, excluding warm up time. PUNCTUALITY is crucial for the progress of the Games and tardiness may result in immediate disqualification. Only registered and paid players that received confirmation are allowed to participate. MASSoc reserves the right to change the terms and conditions or rules and regulations of the Games at any time if needed. MASSoc reserves the right to disqualify any players without refunds if deemed to be unsuited to play due to extreme causes i.e. serious injury, disciplinary problems, violence etc. All personal belongings and sporting equipment are the sole responsibility of their owners. Injuries, personal harm or loss of belongings that occur during the Games will be taken note of and dealt accordingly by the Edge and MASSoc but will not be held accountable for or compensated. Teams participating in all sports will be expected to nominate one player to be a referee/linesman for their respective sport. They will be expected to thoroughly know the basic rules and regulations of the sport, as adjusted to fit the MASSoc Games. A briefing will be given to them as well. Failure to be present when needed will result in deduction of points from their respective team. Ignorance of the Games rules and regulations will not be justifiable cause for breaching the rules and regulations.

Badminton
1. Same basic rules of badminton apply for all categories; Men Singles, Women Singles, Men Doubles and Mixed Doubles. 2. All umpire and linesmen judgements are final and irrevocable. Game Format Players will be divided into two groups during group stages where each player/pair will compete against the others in their group. The two players/pairs with the highest and second-highest points (wins) will progress to the semi-finals. Players are expected to bring their own rackets and shuttlecocks for warm ups. For group stage and semi-final matches, only one shuttlecock will be allocated for each game with the exceptions of severe damage to the shuttle that restricts gameplay based on the umpires good judgement. A coin toss determines who will get first serve. Scoring Each match is given 10 minutes of gameplay excluding 1 minute of warm up and played till 21points or till time runs out, whichever comes first, whereby the player/pair with higher points wins. Only the finals have the exception of having no time limit and comprises of 3 sets, each played till 21 points. New shuttlecocks can be provided throughout the match. Best of 3 sets will be declared winner. Prize Winners and runner-ups of each category will receive gold and silver medals. There are no third-placing matches. Certificates will be awarded to the winners and runnerups.

Futsal
Football matches will be held in Hall 1b unless stated otherwise. Standard rules of football apply. Each team should consist of 5 players. A maximum of 2 substitutes are allowed but keep in mind the team will only receive 5 medals and the registration fee did not take into account substitutes. Each match will be provided with one referee. All referees decisions are final and not open to contestation. No intentional violence, provocation, swearing or abuse will be allowed. Each team must name a player in their team to be a volunteer referee. The referee will be expected to be available at all times and be contacted easily by the Games Director. Failure to do so will result in the referees team being penalised 1 point from the table. Game Format Each team play two matches. Two teams with highest points advances to finals. In the event there are more than two teams that possess two wins, the top two teams with the biggest points difference advances to the final. In the event there are more than two teams that possess the highest point differences, the two teams with the highest number of goals scored will advance. Football 5-a-side will be played in a two stage format group stages and final. Teams will play off at group stages with a 10-1-10 format, first and second halves are 10 minutes each with a minutes break during halftime. The teams with the highest points in each group will then progress to the final. If there are two teams that possess the same points, the biggest goal difference will decide the finalist. Fouls can be called by the referee and result in free-kicks or penalties if the foul occurred in the box. Yellow card rules are enforced, with 2 yellows resulting in a red card and suspension for that game. A straight red card can also be given. Substitutions can occur anytime during the game with prior knowledge of the referee with unlimited number of substitutions per game. Entry and exit of players must be done swiftly at the instruction of the referee when gameplay stops. Starting kick-off will be decided by the referees coin toss. Second half will be started by the team that lost the coin toss. After a goal has been scored, the team that conceded will start the ball. Back passing is allowed however the keeper cannot touch the ball. Ball is out of play if it goes over the touchline or touches the ceiling/walls. A free kick will be given against the team that has committed more than five fouls. No dangerous or sliding tackles are allowed. Scoring System

Points : win;3points, draw;2points, defeat;0points. A 5 penalty shoot-out will occur at the end of the game if there is a draw.

Safety and Uniform Players are advised to wear elbow-pads, knee-pads, shin-pads, futsal boots and protective gear during gameplay and must be shown visible to the referee. Keepers should have gloves. Failure to do so poses a health and safety risk to the players of both teams and might result in disqualification if there is inadequate protection. Teams should have matching uniforms (shirt, pants) or unique uniforms of colour and design for easy recognition. Prize Winning team will receive 5 gold medals. Certificates will be awarded to the winners and substitutes.

Basketball
Standard rules of basketball apply. Each team should consist of 5 players. A maximum of 2 substitutes are allowed but keep in mind the team will only receive 5 medals and the registration fee did not take into account substitutes. Each match will be provided with one referee, scorekeeper/timekeeper. All referees decisions are final and not open to contestation. No intentional violence, provocation, swearing or abuse will be allowed. Each team must name a player in their team to be a volunteer referee. The referee will be expected to be available at all times and be contacted easily by the Games Director. Failure to do so will result in the referees team being penalised. Game format Each team play two matches. Two teams with highest points advances to finals. In the event there are more than two teams that possess two wins, the top two teams with the biggest points difference advances to the final. In the event there are more than two teams that possess the highest point differences, the two teams with the highest number of points scored will advance. Knockout format applies with the winner proceeding to the finals. Game will be played in 10-1-10 format with 10 minutes for each half and a minutes break. No time-outs are allowed during first stage. A 30-second timeout for each half is allowed during the final. In the event of a tie, extra 3 minutes is given for all basketball matches. Substitutions can occur anytime during the game with prior knowledge of the referee. Entry and exit of players must be done swiftly at the instruction of the referee when gameplay stops. A foul will result in a free throw. Technical fouls also apply. A team that has accumulated more than 5 fouls during a half will have 2 free throws awarded against them. Game will be started by a jump-ball. Uniform Teams should have matching uniforms (shirt, pants) or unique uniforms of colour and design for easy recognition. Prize Winning team will receive 5 gold medals. Certificates will be awarded to the winners and substitutes.

Netball
Netball matches will be held in Hall 2 unless stated otherwise. Standard rules of netball apply. Each team should consist of 7 players. A maximum of 2 substitutes are allowed but keep in mind the team will only receive 7 medals and the registration fee did not take into account substitutes. Each match will be provided with one referee, scorekeeper/timekeeper. All referees decisions are final and not open to contestation. No intentional violence, provocation, swearing or abuse will be allowed. Each team must name a player in their team to be a volunteer referee. The referee will be expected to be available at all times and be contacted easily by the Games Director. Failure to do so will result in the referees team being penalised. Game format Knockout format applies with the winner proceeding to the finals. Game will be played in 10-1-10 format with 10 minutes for each half and a minutes break. No time-outs are allowed during group stage. A 30-second timeout for each half is allowed during the final. In the event of a tie, extra 3 minutes is given. Table Tennis
Men singles and Women singles will observe the same basic rules of table tennis. Players are required to provide their own table tennis racket and ball for warm-ups. Game format Each player plays two matches. Two players with highest points advance to finals. In the event there are more than two players that possess two wins, the top two players with the biggest points difference advances to the final. In the event there are more than two players that possess the highest point differences, the two players with the highest number of points scored will advance.

A three stage format will be used group stage, semi-finals and finals. A coin toss determines who will get first serve. For group stage and semi-final matches, each match will have one set and will be played to 11 points or 10 minutes, whichever comes first. If both players score 10 points or have equal points after 10 minutes have passed, play continues until a player gets a two point advantage. Final game will be decided by the best of 3 sets with 11 points per set. Prize Winner of each category will receive a gold medal. Certificates will be awarded to the winners.

Miscellaneous
Health, Safety and Risk Assessment. Injuries, fire hazards, dehydration and other risk related issues are very real concerns for the Games committee and we work closely with the Union and Edge staff to ensure risk is minimised as much as possible. In the event of an emergency, please contact the nearest volunteer, Games Director, Committee or Edge Staff immediately for assistance. In case of any queries please do not hesitate to clarify with the aforementioned parties. Spectator Rules Spectators are allowed to enter the Edge for free to watch the Games provided they abide to all previously stated General Rules. Main viewing area will be the upper balcony of Hall 1, accessible through the stairs in the main corridor. No interruptions, disruptions or interferences are allowed i.e. swearing, abuse on the players etc. Please follow the instructions and advice of the volunteers/Games Directors. Failure to comply will result in your removal from the Edge. Food and Drinks Snacks, water and energy drinks are allowed. Players are advised to bring their own water to rehydrate themselves. Water dispensers are available in the Edge. However, hot food such as rice or any food/drinks in unstable containers are not permitted. If unsure, always ask the volunteers or Games Directors. Should any spills be noticed, they should be reported immediately to the volunteers to avoid slips or falls. Sportsmanship The purpose of MASSoc games is to foster strong sporting spirit amongst players from different backgrounds. Handshakes amongst players will be encouraged at the start and end of every match. Complaints The main purpose of MASSoc Games and MASSoc is to provide the best ever sporting competition event that its participants can enjoy. However, we accept the fact that dissatisfaction almost always occurs and therefore we apologise in advance. We also welcome any feedback that you have as a participant or member on that day so that we may reflect on the mistakes or issues that we might have overlooked and remedy it for future events.
