It is desired to correct the power factor to 0.95 by means of static condensers connected across each phase of a three phase, 400V, 50Hz motor installation having a maximum load of 50KVA at pf of 0.75 lagging. What must be the capacity of each deltaconnected capacitor? A three phase line 100km long has its conductors of 0.5cm diameter spaced at the corners of the equilateral triangle of 120cm side. Find the inductance per phase of the system. The three conductors of a three phase, 3 wire line are arranged at the corners of a triangle, the sides of which are 1m, 1.3m, and 2m. Calculate the inductance and capacitance per km of the line, when the conductors are transposed. Explain briefly the skin effect in a transmission line. On what factors does it depend? What is its effect on the resistance of the line? Discuss how transposition helps in equalizing the capacitances in an unsymmetrically spaced 3 phase overhead transmission line. What is meant by proximity effect and what are bundled conductors? What do you understand by generalized constants of a transmission line? What is their significance? What is meant by characteristic impedance and propagation constant? A single phase transmission line has a resistance of 0.22 ohm and inductive reactance of 0.36ohm. Find the voltage at the sending end to give 500KVA at 2000V at the receiving end at a load power factor of 0.707 lagging. Also, find the efficiency of transmission at this load. What are the causes of voltage drop and line losses in transmission lines How is the capacitance effect taken into account in transmission lines? Each conductor of a 33 KV, 3 phase system is suspended by a string of three similar insulators, the capacitance of each disc is nine times the capacitance to ground. Calculate the voltage across each insulator. Determine the string efficiency also. A string of eight suspension insulators is to be fitted with a grading ring. If the pin to earth capacitance are all equal to C, find the values of line to pin capacitances that would give a uniform voltage distribution over the string. A string of eight suspension insulators is to be graded to obtain uniform distribution of voltage across the string. If the capacitance of the top unit is 10 times the capacitance to ground of each unit, determine the capacitance of the remaining seven units. What do you mean by grading of cables? Describe in detail. Derive the potential distribution over a string of suspension

insulators Write a short note on various systems of D.C. distribution Explain briefly the various systems of ac distribution. One train is running from station A and is crossing another train standing at 3km from station B. the loading due to running train is 600A, while at standing it is 50A. what will be the position of the running train for having minimum potential at a point in the section having distance 8km between stations A and B, if both the ends are maintained at equal dc potentials? An electric train taking a constant current of 500A moves on a section of line between two substations 10km apart and maintained at 600 and 590 V, dc respectively. The track resistance is 0.05 ohm/km both go and return. Find the point of minimum potential along the track and current supplied by two substations at that instant. In a 2 core dc distributor cable 400m long supplies there are concentrated loads of 120, 80, 50 and 120A at 50, 150, 200 and 300m, respectively from the end A. Determine the position of the lowest voltage when the cable is fed at 250V from both the ends.
