The Trial of the Century: Description of Roles JudgeYou preside over the trial. You need to be fair and firm. You need to know and thoroughly understand the case. (i.e. rules of evidence and other trial procedures.) You will need to attend an evening with our law expert, Kathleen Purcell, on Tuesday, November 15, at 6:00. You also must learn about every witness, organize a court roster, and lead the entire trial (schedule, court room procedures, materials, etc.) Key Role Attorneys for the Defense (3)you will prepare your case and prepare your witnesses to testify. You must use your questioning of witnesses and your speaking skills to convince the jury to decide in your favor. As a team of three, you will have important responsibilities: you will make the opening statement; you will conduct direct examination of your own witnesses; you will conduct cross examination of the plaintiff witnesses; and you will make a closing statement. You will need to work together. You will need to familiarize yourself with all aspects of the case including the information on all witnesses. You will need to attend the evening meeting with our law expert, Kathleen Purcell, on Tuesday, November 15, at 6:00. Toughest Role Attorneys for the Plaintiff (3)You will prepare your case and prepare your witnesses to testify. You must use your questioning of witnesses and your speaking skills to convince the jury to decide in your favor. As a team of three, you will have important responsibilities: you will make the opening statement; you will conduct direct examination of your own witnesses; you will conduct cross examination of the defense witnesses; and you will make a closing statement. You will need to work together. You will need to familiarize yourself with all aspects of the case including the information on all witnesses. You will need to attend the evening with our law expert, Ms. Kathleen Purcell, on Tuesday, November 15, at 6:00. Toughest Role BailiffYou will work in cooperation with the judge and organize the trial (schedule, room set-up, materials including gavel and Bible, witness name plates, signs, etc.) The Graphic Artist will help you. You will act as liaison with the senior jurors regarding any matters of communication (including issuing Jury Summons). During the trial you will swear in witnesses and assist the judge in maintaining general order in courtroom. You will create the jury summons and the decision ballots. Additionally, you will help the Graphic Artist write the captions on the poster. Requires great organizational skills Graphic Artist you will construct the visual a photojournalistic artifact that captures the key moments of the trial (think photos, designs, other) using pictures taken by you, the journalists and videographers. You will write captions for all pictures, create attractive headers and generally design a beautiful LARGE poster for the classroom. The Bailiff will help with the writing of captions. Due Day 1, Week of December 3. Journalists (2)You will cover the trial as if you were reporters for a major metropolitan newspaper. Following the trial you will create two artifacts: first, the trial newsletter (Before the trial; After the first Day; Day two; Final wrap-up edition). The newsletters should include editorials about the trial, interviews with key witnesses, cartoons?, and objective reporting and (Lots of pictures). Second, provide pictures to the Graphic Artist for the photojournalistic artifact for the trial that captures the key moments. All products will be submitted on Day 1, Week of December 3. BEFORE SCHOOL SO THEY CAN BE COPIED FOR THE CLASS AND DISTRIBUTED DURING THE CLASS PERIOD. Videographer (2) You will cover the trial as if you were a reporter for a major metropolitan news station. You will video the proceedings and create a 15-minute video (not one minute more!) that captures the highlights of the trial as well as trial prep and pre-and post-trial interviews with participants and jurors. You will provide pictures both to the Graphic Artist for the photojournalistic artifact, and to the journalists for the newspaper. The Video will be shown in class on Day 1, Week of December 3. Expert WitnessYou will provide the expert testimony regarding human nature for our trial. You will familiarize yourself with all the key details about your witness, write an excellent witness statement, find an appropriate costume, and be ready to testify. Attorneys will call you to the stand, and you will impart your expertise as it relates to the case. You must assume the mannerisms of your witnessthink of this as an acting job. Percipient WitnessYou will be the eye-witnesses about the events in the book. You will testify about the nature of humanity based upon your experiences in A Clockwork Orange. You will write a witness statement, find an appropriate costume for your witness and be prepared to take on the mannerisms of the individual you will impersonate.
