Kadyns Law: New Iowa Law Increases Penalties for Passing Stopped School Buses
(Iowa D.O.T.) The bill known as "Kadyn's Law," in memory of Kadyn Halverson, went into effect with the governor's signature March 16, 2012. The 7-year-old rst grader from Kensett was killed last May by a driver who had illegally passed a stopped school bus. The new provisions increase the penalties for drivers who fail to abide by the law (Iowa Code 321.372) on stopped school buses. Previously, a motorist who passed a bus when the red warning lights were ashing was ned $200. The new Iowa law increased the penalty to at least $250 and as high as $675 for a rst offense and up to 30 days in jail. For subsequent violations, a driver could face nes of up to $1,875. A driver who violates the law and causes an injury could face added nes, jail time and license suspension. In addition to the situations described below, drivers should never pass on the right. Violations of Iowa's motor vehicle laws should be reported to local law enforcement. Scenario 1 You are traveling on a two-lane or threelane Nearing the bus from the rear; drivers must always stop when either the amber lights or red lights are ashing. Stop no closer than 15 feet from the bus. Meeting the bus from the front; drivers must slow their vehicles to 20 mph when amber lights are ashing. Stop when the lights change to red and the stop arm comes out. Remain stopped until the lights stop ashing and the stop arm is withdrawn. Scenario 2 You are traveling on a road with two or more lanes in each direction Stop if nearing the bus from the rear when amber or red lights are ashing. Stop no closer than 15 feet from the bus. When meeting the bus in one of the opposite two lanes (or more), you do not need to stop even if the bus has stopped with lights ashing and stop arm out. The bus is not permitted to load or unload children who must cross this type of roadway unless there are ofcial trafc control devices present.

Check Your Tires Before Your Trip

(NAPSI)-Keeping your car on the road to safety and savings can start with something as simple as wellmaintained tires. According to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, about 11 percent of vehicles on the road have at least one bald tire, and 55 percent of vehicles have at least one underinated tire. Ongoing preventive maintenance--which can take less than 10 minutes--at least every month or before long trips is the best method to maximize tire performance, say the experts at Cooper Tire. Before hitting the road, drivers should conduct doit-yourself maintenance checks, examining tires for proper ination, damage or excessive wear and tear. Tr e a d i n g rmly. The only piece of a vehicle to touch the road is the tires, making tire tread-a key factor in handling, cornering, accelerating and braking--a vital part of overall tire maintenance. Tire tread depth should be more than 2/32 of an inch deep all around the tire, and drivers can check this by using a penny. Insert the edge of the coin into the tread with Lincoln going in head rst. If the top of Lincolns head is covered by tread, theres an acceptable amount of tread; if the top of his head is visible at any location on the tire, the tire is worn out and should be replaced. Wearing well. While examining the tread, also look for signs of uneven wear or damage such as cuts, cracks, splits, punctures and bulges. These conditions shorten the life of tires and, if not corrected, may do further damage to the tire, or air loss may occur. Putting the pressure on. Tire pressure also plays a critical role in the overall performance of tires as underination creates excessive stress on the tire, while overination can cause uneven wear in addition to handling and braking issues. A common myth is that the tire pressure listed on the sidewall is the optimal pressure, while in reality it is the maximum pressure. Drivers should follow the guidelines found in the vehicle owners manual or tire placard (or sticker) attached to the vehicle door edge, doorpost, glove box door, trunk or fuel door. Professional help. Should any of these checks reveal the need for required maintenance--or when in doubt about the condition of their tires--drivers should take vehicles to a tire dealer for a professional inspection, suggests Chuck Yurkovich, vice president of global technology for Cooper Tire.

Driving Smart Can Mean Signicant Savings At The Gas Pump

(NAPSI)As gas prices continue to uctuate, its always a good time to evaluate your driving habits and take steps to keep yourself and your car on the road to savings at the pump. To demonstrate the 10 common mistakes that drivers make to affect fuel economy, General Motors conducted a driving test. Two of their fuel economy engineers, Ann Wenzlick and Beth Nunning, drove identical Chevrolet Cruze LTs on a typical workday commute. They each drove 20 minutes with city and highway driving, including a stop for coffee. Wenzlick averaged 37 miles per gallon using efcient driving habits and by maintaining her car and Nunning averaged 21 miles per gallon. On average, that was a $100 price difference at the pump. Here are some of their tips based on what they learned: Get out of the drivethrough lane. Idling for 15 minutes burns through about a quarter of a gallon of gas. Parking your car and going into the store to get what you want can actually help to save money on gas. Take it easy. Jumping on the gas at every light, only to hit the brakes, isnt going to get you home any faster. However, driving smoothly can improve your mileage by 20 percent. Drive 70, not 80. It may not sound like much, but its likely a 10-mph difference can save you up to four miles per gallon when driving on the highway. Use cruise control. It turns out that maintaining a constant speed over time is much more efcient than speeding up and slowing down over and over again. Roll up the windows. At slower speeds, turning off the air-conditioning can save you a little, but on the highway, its better to roll up the windows. If the windows are down, the increased air pressure can slow the car and consume more energy than airconditioning will. Get rid of that extra stuff in the trunk of your car. Every 100 pounds of weight you carry in the car can reduce fuel economy by 2 percent. Dont ignore the check engine light. Serious engine problems can cut your fuel economy by up to 40 percent. Try to bundle your errands. Plan ahead. An engine at operating temperature can be up to 50 percent more efcient than a cold engine. So, when possible, its much better to run ve errands in an afternoon than running one errand every day of the week. Make your tires last. Properly inated tires will improve your fuel economy and they will last longer. Also, rotate tires at manufacturerrecommended intervals. Use the grade of motor oil recommended for your vehicle; the same goes for the octane level of gasoline. Motor oil that says Energy Conserving on the performance symbol of the American Petroleum Institute contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fuel economy. For most cars, the recommended gasoline is regular octane. In most cases, using a higher-than-recommendedoctane gas offers no benetand costs more. Ditch the roof ornaments. At highway speeds, up to a third of your fuel is used to overcome wind resistance, so even small changes to your vehicles aerodynamics can have a big impact in fuel economy. It pays to be prudent. According to Roger Clark, manager of the GM Energy Center, With a well-maintained car, the best drivers get up to 25 percent more miles per gallon than average. When you combine a poorly maintained car with inefcient driving habits, the fuel economy of the worst drivers can be 50 percent below average. Clark added, The fuel economy of every vehicle is greatly affected by how you drive and how you care for your vehicle. Often, relatively small changes to your driving habits and vehicle maintenance can make the difference between being on the bottom or the top of the fuel-economy scale.

A 57 For Us

ob Larsons rst car was a 1957 Chevy that he bought for $300. Problem was, he only had $225. But the fellow he bought it from said he could go ahead and take it, that he knew Bob would pay him the remaining $75. Beaming when he got the car home, Bob was ready to drive his new car. But his father said he could drive the new car.once he paid the remaining $75. It didnt take me long to save that money. And boy was that car polished in the mean time. It was a good lesson my father taught me, Bob said. Bob later sold that 1957 Chevy so he could buy a 1968 Chevelle. The past year, Bob and his wife, Lonnie, decided to start looking for another 1957 Chevy to coincide with their 40th wedding anniversary and the 40th anniversary of Bob returning from Vietnam. We found quite a few 1957 Chevys and inquired about a few. By accident, we saw a 1957 red Pontiac and both liked the look of it, Lonnie said. You never see 1957 Pontiacs. They are kind of unique, Bob said. The 1957 Pontiac Catalina Star Chief Coupe two-door hard top was in Scottsdale, AZ. It didnt work out for the Larsons to y out and see it, but they remembered that Ron and Pam Sande were in Arizona at the time. We asked if they would go check it out and they did. Ron took it for a test drive and then called to tell us about it, Lonnie said. The Larsons sought out the advice of fellow car collector and neighbor, Garold Schultz, who told them to get the Pontiac because you just dont see them. So in February, the Larsons were able to have their new vehicle shipped to Humboldt, where it was unloaded at the Hy-Vee parking lot. Red and white with lots of chrome, the Star Chief was restored in the 1980s. It belonged to a family in Texas for many years and remained in the southern states until now and

has just 122,000 miles on it. It is estimated that only 120 cars were ordered like this one, so they are ultra rare. With a 347 V8 tri-power, it is one of the early muscle cars. Its a powerful car with a nice sound to it, Bob said. Theyve taken the 1957 Pontiac to a few events, such as the Backseat Diner car cruises, JaMar in Fort Dodge and a car show at Eagle Grove. Shortly after they bought the car, they had a request for it to be used in a wedding. Bob drove the bride and groom from the church in Badger to the reception at Rustix in Humboldt. The Larsons have other vehicles. In the 1970s, they bought a 1923 Model T that was all original and still ran. Bob tore it apart and continues to work on it as time allows. They have a 1978 Thunderbird that theyve kept through the years. They bought a 1954 Oldsmobile four door sedan from Garold Schultz and plan on doing a little work on it. Bob grew up in Badger and Lonnie grew up on a farm in the Badger area and attended country school in Beaver Township. They met at church in Badger and got engaged in 1969, just before Bob left to serve in Vietnam. They were married on Nov. 6, 1971, and shortly thereafter bought a house six miles west of Humboldt where they lived for 22 years. They bought their current farm place in 1990 and started building a new house. Most of the buildings have been replaced on the farm that overlooks the Des Moines River.

We both grew up in this area and actually both ice skated on the oxbow down below here. We never dreamt wed be lucky enough to buy this place some day, Lonnie said. Over the years, Bob worked at the New Idea plant in Fort Dodge, and later was plant manager of Quality Plus Products, a pharmaceutical company. He then worked for 24 years as a supervisor/foreman for The Chantland Company before retiring to the farm. Today, Bob enjoys farming and working with livestock. Lonnie worked on the farm growing up and during her senior year of high school they offered an ofce education coop program and she started working in the afternoons for Dodgen Industries, ling and typing invoices. She grew with the company and after 38 years parted with the company as executive vice-president. She intended to start enjoying life on the farm, but was approached by the Humboldt County Development Association about becoming their rst economic development director, which she did for four years. It was time to go back to my original plan of life on the farm. I wanted to spend time with my growing family. My grandkids were growing up and they werent waiting for me, Lonnie said. The Larsons have three daughters (Jen, Julie and Jeana) and ve grandchildren. The Larsons raise horses, smooth riding Missouri Fox Trotters to be exact. They also have a small cow-calf herd, have some chickens, ducks, ponies, a goat and more. It is their love of the farm that led the Larsons to start Pumpkins and Ponies seven years ago. This year, it will be held on their farm on Lone Tree Road (six miles south of Humboldt) on Saturday, Oct. 13. There will be horse rides, horse drawn wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, musical entertainment, food and much more. Its really turned into a neighborhood event, too.
