Parent University Launched at OCC
Parents from throughout the Syracuse City School District headed to class Saturday at Onondaga Community College as the district, along with Say Yes to Education, launched their Parent University. Syracuse City School District Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras kicked-off the event at the Gordon Student Center. Parent University is a unique opportunity for parents, family members and caregivers of district students, she said. It offers families a variety of free classes and workshops designed to add to existing skills and provide additional growth and development opportunities, while positively contributing to the academic and social-emotional success of children in the Syracuse City School District. Principal Baruti Kafele, a former urban school educator in New Jersey, took the stage to talk about strategies for motivating African-American males to achieve in school. Classes began in Whitney Hall. Among the offerings: information on finding your voice as a parent, the dangers of synthetic drugs, how parents can prevent bullying and raising a son in the absence of his father. At the end of the day, door prizes were awarded and parents were encouraged to sign up for other Parent University classes, which will be offered throughout the school year. Parent University Staff

NYCs Bloomberg: $500K to gay marriage campaigns
NEW YORK (AP) Mayor Michael Bloomberg is poised to spend $500,000 of his personal fortune on gay marriage campaigns in Maine, Minnesota and Washington state, he said Monday, following up on a major political spending push the billionaire businessman-turned-politician announced last week. Bloomberg already had established himself as an outspoken, and generous, supporter of same-sex marriage. He unveiled a $250,000 contribution to a Maryland gay marriage effort earlier this month and has backed four New York Republican senators who crossed party lines to vote for legalizing gay marriage in the state last year. Mondays move deepened Bloombergs involvement in the issue outside New York, and it reflected his vow to give at least $10 million by Election Day to moderate candidates and to ballot initiatives supporting gay marriage and other issues around the country. Marriage equality is the next big step in Americas long march of freedom, Bloomberg said in a statement Monday. His new contributions, intended as challenge grants to spur matching donations, include $125,000 to a group backing a ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage in Maine and $250,000 to an organization seeking to uphold it in Washington. A Washington law legalizing same-sex marriage was passed and signed this year, but its on hold until next months referendum. Bloomberg is giving another $125,000 to a group working against a Minnesota constitutional amendment that would strengthen an existing law against same-sex marriage. A dozen Minnesota businesspeople already have raised $125,000 to match Bloombergs gift, said the organization, Minnesotans United for All Families. Business leaders across the state and those around the nation, like Mayor Bloomberg have made it clear that this amendment is bad for business, Minnesotans United campaign manager Richard Carlbom said. The group says the proposed constitutional amendment would hurt Minnesotas prospects of attracting talented workers, among other arguments against it. A spokesman for a group leading the charge to pass the proposal, Minnesota for Marriage, saw Bloombergs gift as interloping. We believe it is the people of Minnesota who should decide the question of marriage, not out-ofstate donors like Bloomberg, said the spokesman, Chuck Darrell. The organization, which includes religious and socially conservative groups, says the state needs the constitutional language to keep judges or lawmakers from altering the traditional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Same-sex marriage is currently legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Besides gay marriage ballot questions, Bloombergs self-financed super PAC, Independence USA PAC, is focusing on local, state and congressional candidates who agree with him on issues including gun control, education reform and the importance of working across party lines. Beneficiaries range from former Maine Gov. Angus King, now running for U.S. Senate there as an independent, to Gloria Negrete McLeod, a Democratic California senator running for U.S. House. Bloomberg, a Democrat-turnedRepublican-turned-independent, has declined thus far to make a presidential endorsement, and his super PAC doesnt plan to pay for any presidential ads.

The decision leaves intact the July ruling by a midlevel court, which concluded closed-door negotiations among senators and gay marriage supporters, including Gov. Andrew Cuomo, did not violate any laws. The Court of Appeals, as is customary, did not explain why it wouldnt take them case. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms claimed Cuomo and another gay marriage supporter, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, violated the states open meetings law when they met behind closed doors with the Senates Republican majority. With the courts decision, same-sex couples no longer have to worry that their right to marry could be legally challenged in this state, Cuomo said

Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib throws against Connecticut during the second quarter of an NCAA college football game in Syracuse, N.Y., Friday, Oct. 19, 2012. (AP Photo/Kevin Rivoli) The Orange set the tone against UConn on their opening drive, playing smashmouth football as Smith broke a 20yard gain on the first of four straight carries that produced 49 yards and set up Ross Krautmans 22-yard field goal. It was execution, Syracuse offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said. I mean, they just did what they were supposed to do. As simple as that sounds, its hard to do. Nobodys coming out and dominating us. Nobodys beat us every game this season, and its been on us. Just that one series seemed to have a snowball effect as the Syracuse passing game opened, even against the likes of UConns standout cornerbacks Dwayne Gratz and Blidi Wreh-Wilson. They combined for just five tackles and failed to break up a pass. Alec Lemon was open often on slant plays and tight end Beckett Wales caught four passes for 69 yards and the first touchdown of his career. We showed that we are a complete team in all three phases, said Lemon, who caught eight passes for 166 yards, setting up three TDs and scoring once. The first couple of drives we were running the ball great. That brought the corners up, brought the safeties up. They were worried about the run and that opened up a lot for the pass game. We could get open up the field. Since its demoralizing start, Syracuse is 3-1 and might challenge for the Big East title, though the loss to Rutgers wont help. The Orange travel to South Florida (25, 0-3) on Saturday, facing a team thats given Syracuse fits over the years. The Bulls have lost 11 of 12 Big East games dating to last season, but they nearly upset No. 16 Louisville last weekend before losing 27-25. We wanted to make a statement, Lemon said. Were capable of winning all these games. Weve just got to come out there and play like we know how to play. Our goal coming into this season was to win the Big East, and I feel like were on track to do that.

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Moderators Must Press for Answer
(TriceEdneyWire. com) - Debate moderators always get a bad rap. As Jim Lehrer and Martha Raddatz demonstrated, candidates z e a l o u s supporters tend rev. jesse to blame the if jackson, sr. moderator their champion doesnt fare well. Thats not fair, but I do suggest moderators should be held accountable for whether they raise questions vital to the publics understanding. We need moderators to press candidates to discuss fundamental issues that too often are cut out of the debate. And we need them to press for answers beyond the talking points and help Americans see where candidates really stand. For example, the plight and promise of our cities have been virtually absent from the debate. Republicans venture into cities only for high-dollar, closed-door fund-raisers. Exasperated Republican Peggy Noonan urged Romney to wake up his campaign by holding an urban rally, for she mourned, All of our campaigning now is in bland suburbs and tired hustings. As Kevin Baker pointed out in the New York Times, the Republican convention seldom uttered a word about a city, and its 31,000-word platform offers no urban agenda. Cities are marked by poor neighborhoods, by slum housing, by impoverished schools, by guns and drugs. We desperately need a policy to address urban poverty just as we need one to address the poverty of Appalachia and rural areas. Urban poverty has now spread to suburbs, as well. Mass transit, education, affordable housing, a living wage, child nutrition, Medicaid, public health these fundamental needs of the vulnerable are now slated for deep cuts in the Romney/Ryan budgets. Yet there is virtually no discussion of what our policy should be for the cities.

Cities are also vibrant centers of creativity, culture, higher education and energy. They are generators of jobs and innovation where the young and the entrepreneurial flock. Yet, there is no discussion of the public policies needed to foster urban productivity and growth. Mass transit, energy efficiency, greening of urban areas, affordable college, the right to privacy, the right to organize and many other pressing issues must be addressed if our cities are to remain vital centers for invention and growth. Or consider inequality. Inequality has reached greater extremes than in age of the robber barons. Coming out of the recession, the top 1 percent captured fully 93 percent of the countrys income growth. Workers are no longer sharing in the increased productivity and profits they help to produce. Romney favors lowering tax rates on the wealthy (while closing unspecified loopholes); Obama favors ending the top-end Bush tax cuts and enforcing a Buffett rule so that billionaires dont pay lower tax rates than their
secretaries. But absent has been any discussion of the implications of this kind of extreme inequality for our democracy even as big money floods our campaigns. Absent has been any serious discussion about what agenda would be needed to rebuild a broad middle class, to recreate what we enjoyed after World War II when we all grew together and incomes on the bottom grew faster, rather than now, when the few are rising, and the rest are sinking. Lets have a debate in which at least some of the vital subjects that are being ignored cities, poverty, inequality, climate change are discussed, and candidates arent allowed to get by with recycled talking points. This requires a moderator who is not intimidated by public criticism but empowered to serve the public by forcing the debate.

life as the moment of conception. In the face of contradictions from independent studies, Romney still asserts that the numbers for his 20% across the board tax cuts add up. Outside of Romneys Team, I know of no economists who will validate his claim of these cuts being revenue neutral. I doubt that whats left of the Middle Class could weather the tax burden predicted for his plan. The most egregious of his lies relates to proposed healthcare under a Romney administration. Romney claims insurance protections for persons with pre-existing conditions, but a closer look at the truth discloses that, just like in pre-Obamacare era, these protections exist for those who can maintain insurance without interruption. If, having a preexisting condition, you lose or relinquish coverage, you wont be able to regain it. Lest we forget that the second debate lie Candy Crowley caught him in was not Romneys only lie, we need to pay closer attention to the potential impact of these lies. As with many others, my review of the Romney Presidential campaign has revealed more lies than I have space in which to write. Romney once stated he didnt know what he said, but he stood by it! Eric Fehrnstrom, his spokesman, said Romney would reset like an Etch A Sketch. Accordingly, I can direct you to any number of Romney
Did Harvard Really Reject Jay-Z as a Business Role Model? I Sincerely Hope Not
Maria Lloyd recently wrote an article in which it was claimed that the rapper Jay-Z was rejected by a career counselor at Harvard University as an appropriate business role model. I am not sure of the exact circumstances of the students allegation, and I am not sure if other Harvard faculty agreed. All I know is that a dr. Boyce young woman said that she Watkins admired Jay-Z for what hes achieved in the business world, and she was shot down faster than an unidentified single engine plane flying over the White House. When I read the article, it made me sad and a little bit disgusted. I dont like Jay-Z very much, to be honest. Although he is nothing short of a lyrical genius, I am deeply concerned about any man who earns over $60 million dollars in a year and only gives $6,000 to charity. I had to agree with Harry Belafonte when he said that todays black artists, namely Jay-Z and Beyonce, are ignoring their social responsibility by refusing to fight on the issues affecting black America, including violence, poverty, unemployment and mass incarceration. Also, the idea of making millions of dollars by promoting yourself as a n***a in Paris to white people around the world is the epitome of a modern day minstrel show. But in Jay-Zs defense, I must say that any business school professor who doesnt believe that students can learn from him is DEAD WRONG. Ive taught in various business schools over the last 19 years. One of the most interesting things about teaching in a school of business is that you quickly find that most business school professors dont know how to go out and actually make money. Sure, theyre experts at producing highly-complicated research papers that no one is ever going to read. But when asked to go into the real world to show that they can do the things theyre teaching students to do, most of them fail the test. Read Original Article At Reason 4 Rhymes
