Parent University Launched at OCC
Parents from throughout the Syracuse City School District headed to class Saturday at Onondaga Community College as the district, along with Say Yes to Education, launched their Parent University. Syracuse City School District Superintendent Sharon L. Contreras kicked-off the event at the Gordon Student Center. Parent University is a unique opportunity for parents, family members and caregivers of district students, she said. It offers families a variety of free classes and workshops designed to add to existing skills and provide additional growth and development opportunities, while positively contributing to the academic and social-emotional success of children in the Syracuse City School District. Principal Baruti Kafele, a former urban school educator in New Jersey, took the stage to talk about strategies for motivating African-American males to achieve in school. Classes began in Whitney Hall. Among the offerings: information on finding your voice as a parent, the dangers of synthetic drugs, how parents can prevent bullying and raising a son in the absence of his father. At the end of the day, door prizes were awarded and parents were encouraged to sign up for other Parent University classes, which will be offered throughout the school year. Parent University Staff

NYCs Bloomberg: $500K to gay marriage campaigns
NEW YORK (AP) Mayor Michael Bloomberg is poised to spend $500,000 of his personal fortune on gay marriage campaigns in Maine, Minnesota and Washington state, he said Monday, following up on a major political spending push the billionaire businessman-turned-politician announced last week. Bloomberg already had established himself as an outspoken, and generous, supporter of same-sex marriage. He unveiled a $250,000 contribution to a Maryland gay marriage effort earlier this month and has backed four New York Republican senators who crossed party lines to vote for legalizing gay marriage in the state last year. Mondays move deepened Bloombergs involvement in the issue outside New York, and it reflected his vow to give at least $10 million by Election Day to moderate candidates and to ballot initiatives supporting gay marriage and other issues around the country. Marriage equality is the next big step in Americas long march of freedom, Bloomberg said in a statement Monday. His new contributions, intended as challenge grants to spur matching donations, include $125,000 to a group backing a ballot initiative that would legalize gay marriage in Maine and $250,000 to an organization seeking to uphold it in Washington. A Washington law legalizing same-sex marriage was passed and signed this year, but its on hold until next months referendum. Bloomberg is giving another $125,000 to a group working against a Minnesota constitutional amendment that would strengthen an existing law against same-sex marriage. A dozen Minnesota businesspeople already have raised $125,000 to match Bloombergs gift, said the organization, Minnesotans United for All Families. Business leaders across the state and those around the nation, like Mayor Bloomberg have made it clear that this amendment is bad for business, Minnesotans United campaign manager Richard Carlbom said. The group says the proposed constitutional amendment would hurt Minnesotas prospects of attracting talented workers, among other arguments against it. A spokesman for a group leading the charge to pass the proposal, Minnesota for Marriage, saw Bloombergs gift as interloping. We believe it is the people of Minnesota who should decide the question of marriage, not out-ofstate donors like Bloomberg, said the spokesman, Chuck Darrell. The organization, which includes religious and socially conservative groups, says the state needs the constitutional language to keep judges or lawmakers from altering the traditional definition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Same-sex marriage is currently legal in New York, Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C. Besides gay marriage ballot questions, Bloombergs self-financed super PAC, Independence USA PAC, is focusing on local, state and congressional candidates who agree with him on issues including gun control, education reform and the importance of working across party lines. Beneficiaries range from former Maine Gov. Angus King, now running for U.S. Senate there as an independent, to Gloria Negrete McLeod, a Democratic California senator running for U.S. House. Bloomberg, a Democrat-turnedRepublican-turned-independent, has declined thus far to make a presidential endorsement, and his super PAC doesnt plan to pay for any presidential ads.

NY top court wont hear gay marriage challenge

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) New Yorks top court refused Tuesday to hear a challenge to the states 2011 law legalizing same-sex marriage, ending the most prominent objection to the law. Tuesday. The freedom to marry in this state is secure for generations to come. Syracuse Mayor Stephanie A. Miner released the following statement in support of the courts decision. Today is yet another occasion for same sex couples from across New York to celebrate our states commitment to equality. The Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state, refused to hear an appeal of the validity of the Marriage Equality Act. This ensures the fundamental right to marry stays the law of our land for all couples looking to bring together a family. One of the greatest privileges I have as Mayor is to officiate marriage ceremonies. Since the Marriage Equality Act became law, I have been proud to marry a number of gay couples. Giving these men and women the opportunity to share the rights of all equal citizens of our society has been an honor. I can say as a lawyer, as a Mayor, and as a person who believes in the intrinsic equality of all New Yorkers todays decision by the court was right and just.

The decision leaves intact the July ruling by a midlevel court, which concluded closed-door negotiations among senators and gay marriage supporters, including Gov. Andrew Cuomo, did not violate any laws. The Court of Appeals, as is customary, did not explain why it wouldnt take them case. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms claimed Cuomo and another gay marriage supporter, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, violated the states open meetings law when they met behind closed doors with the Senates Republican majority. With the courts decision, same-sex couples no longer have to worry that their right to marry could be legally challenged in this state, Cuomo said

Syracuse finds balanced attack at critical time

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) Thumb through the Syracuse media guide to the records section, and its no surprise the first three pages are devoted to rushing. For a school steeped in a tradition of greatness at running back, the first half of the season was an anomaly. The Orange failed to have one 100yard rusher and fell to 2-4. Then Jerome Smith finally broke through against Connecticut on Friday night. Smith rushed for a career-high 133 yards to pace a running game that netted 251, averaging 4.7 yards per carry, and the Orange (3-4, 2-1 Big East) routed the Huskies 40-10. Coaches always strive for balance, and Syracuse delivered against UConn with equal yardage in both phases and 20 points in each half. Ryan Nassib was 14 of 20 passing for 251 yards in an offensive performance that netted 502 yards to Connecticuts 290. UConn entered the game ranked sixth in total defense (261 ypg) and 13th against the run (99.4). It was a big emphasis, Orange coach Doug Marrone said of the run game. There was a lot of frustration. We knew we had to run the ball. We challenged those guys. We challenged them up front. We challenged their backs. I think we did a nice job. It shows that we can keep building and keep becoming more physical. Syracuse lost the first two games of the season, to Northwestern and Southern California relying on a nohuddle offense that ran an amazing 182 plays and produced 1,051 yards. The rushing attempts were there (35 per game) but the yardage wasnt (3.6 yards per carry) as Smith, Nassib and Prince-Tyson Gulley combined for the bulk of the carries. In losing 23-15 at Rutgers 10 days ago, Syracuse managed just 62 yards rushing on 32 carries, committed four turnovers, and had a blocked kick returned for a touchdown. That came after a solid 14-13 win at home over Pittsburgh in this topsy-turvy season.

Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib throws against Connecticut during the second quarter of an NCAA college football game in Syracuse, N.Y., Friday, Oct. 19, 2012. (AP Photo/Kevin Rivoli) The Orange set the tone against UConn on their opening drive, playing smashmouth football as Smith broke a 20yard gain on the first of four straight carries that produced 49 yards and set up Ross Krautmans 22-yard field goal. It was execution, Syracuse offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said. I mean, they just did what they were supposed to do. As simple as that sounds, its hard to do. Nobodys coming out and dominating us. Nobodys beat us every game this season, and its been on us. Just that one series seemed to have a snowball effect as the Syracuse passing game opened, even against the likes of UConns standout cornerbacks Dwayne Gratz and Blidi Wreh-Wilson. They combined for just five tackles and failed to break up a pass. Alec Lemon was open often on slant plays and tight end Beckett Wales caught four passes for 69 yards and the first touchdown of his career. We showed that we are a complete team in all three phases, said Lemon, who caught eight passes for 166 yards, setting up three TDs and scoring once. The first couple of drives we were running the ball great. That brought the corners up, brought the safeties up. They were worried about the run and that opened up a lot for the pass game. We could get open up the field. Since its demoralizing start, Syracuse is 3-1 and might challenge for the Big East title, though the loss to Rutgers wont help. The Orange travel to South Florida (25, 0-3) on Saturday, facing a team thats given Syracuse fits over the years. The Bulls have lost 11 of 12 Big East games dating to last season, but they nearly upset No. 16 Louisville last weekend before losing 27-25. We wanted to make a statement, Lemon said. Were capable of winning all these games. Weve just got to come out there and play like we know how to play. Our goal coming into this season was to win the Big East, and I feel like were on track to do that.

Arrest made in mans slaying outside Syracuse bar

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ Authorities say theyve made an arrest in a fatal shooting that occurred during a fight outside a Syracuse bar late last month. Local media outlets report that Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler announced Wednesday night that 25-year-old Anthony Hopper of Syracuse has been charged with second-degree murder and assault in the killing of 23-year-old Rodney Maddux. Police say Hopper shot Maddux as he tried to break up a fight outside the B&B Lounge early on the morning of Sept. 30. Two other men were wounded. Officials say their investigation was aided by the release of video from a surveillance camera outside the bar. Police say the footage showed a

man and a vehicle they believe were involved in the shooting. Fowler says Hopper is expected to be arraigned in Syracuse City Court Thursday.

OPINION/EDITORIAL
Moderators Must Press for Answer
(TriceEdneyWire. com) - Debate moderators always get a bad rap. As Jim Lehrer and Martha Raddatz demonstrated, candidates z e a l o u s supporters tend rev. jesse to blame the if jackson, sr. moderator their champion doesnt fare well. Thats not fair, but I do suggest moderators should be held accountable for whether they raise questions vital to the publics understanding. We need moderators to press candidates to discuss fundamental issues that too often are cut out of the debate. And we need them to press for answers beyond the talking points and help Americans see where candidates really stand. For example, the plight and promise of our cities have been virtually absent from the debate. Republicans venture into cities only for high-dollar, closed-door fund-raisers. Exasperated Republican Peggy Noonan urged Romney to wake up his campaign by holding an urban rally, for she mourned, All of our campaigning now is in bland suburbs and tired hustings. As Kevin Baker pointed out in the New York Times, the Republican convention seldom uttered a word about a city, and its 31,000-word platform offers no urban agenda. Cities are marked by poor neighborhoods, by slum housing, by impoverished schools, by guns and drugs. We desperately need a policy to address urban poverty just as we need one to address the poverty of Appalachia and rural areas. Urban poverty has now spread to suburbs, as well. Mass transit, education, affordable housing, a living wage, child nutrition, Medicaid, public health these fundamental needs of the vulnerable are now slated for deep cuts in the Romney/Ryan budgets. Yet there is virtually no discussion of what our policy should be for the cities.

The views expressed on our opinion pages are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the position or viewpoint of MRMG or CNY Vision

Cities are also vibrant centers of creativity, culture, higher education and energy. They are generators of jobs and innovation where the young and the entrepreneurial flock. Yet, there is no discussion of the public policies needed to foster urban productivity and growth. Mass transit, energy efficiency, greening of urban areas, affordable college, the right to privacy, the right to organize and many other pressing issues must be addressed if our cities are to remain vital centers for invention and growth. Or consider inequality. Inequality has reached greater extremes than in age of the robber barons. Coming out of the recession, the top 1 percent captured fully 93 percent of the countrys income growth. Workers are no longer sharing in the increased productivity and profits they help to produce. Romney favors lowering tax rates on the wealthy (while closing unspecified loopholes); Obama favors ending the top-end Bush tax cuts and enforcing a Buffett rule so that billionaires dont pay lower tax rates than their

secretaries. But absent has been any discussion of the implications of this kind of extreme inequality for our democracy even as big money floods our campaigns. Absent has been any serious discussion about what agenda would be needed to rebuild a broad middle class, to recreate what we enjoyed after World War II when we all grew together and incomes on the bottom grew faster, rather than now, when the few are rising, and the rest are sinking. Lets have a debate in which at least some of the vital subjects that are being ignored cities, poverty, inequality, climate change are discussed, and candidates arent allowed to get by with recycled talking points. This requires a moderator who is not intimidated by public criticism but empowered to serve the public by forcing the debate.

Maxine Waters Set to Become Financial Services Ranking Member

(TriceEdneyWire. com) - I will continue to c h a m p i o n p r a c t i c a l regulations, while making sure they work for consumers and the financial sector, a sector Marc MoriaL which has the right to be profitable but the obligation to be fair, two concepts which are not mutually exclusive. Representative Maxine Waters It is always big news whenever ethics charges are brought against a Member of Congress. Convictions, though rare, also make headlines. We understand that bad news sells. But we also think it is a big deal when a respected Member of Congress is completely exonerated of ethics charges -- especially when that Member is someone as powerful and effective as California Congresswoman Maxine Waters. In case you missed it, in September, after a three-year investigation, Representative Waters, a 21-year veteran of the House and a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, was cleared of all charges related to her role in assisting minority-owned banks get bailout help through the governments Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP). While her husband owned stock in one of those banks, the investigation found that the help that bank received was the result of a request she made on behalf of all minority banks. House Ethics Committee Special Counsel, Billy Martin concluded, The evidence in the record does not support a knowing violation of ethics rules or any standard of conduct with respect to Rep. Maxine Waters. Since her initial 1991 election to the House, Representative Waters has been a staunch advocate for middle and working class families and has fought hard for minority inclusion in the financial services industry. In fact, she wrote the legislation creating the Offices of Minority and Women Inclusion as part of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. Dodd-Frank puts in place the most comprehensive financial regulatory reform measures since the Great Depression and is intended to prevent a repeat of the reckless Wall Street behavior that caused the financial crisis of 2008. In her role as a senior member of the Financial Services Committee, Rep. Waters played a key role in shaping that legislation and was successful in including provisions specifically designed to protect low-income and minority citizens. Because of her, there is now an Office of Minority and Women at each of the federal regulatory agencies such as the Treasury Department, the Federal Reserve, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and others. These Offices will work to reverse years of underrepresentation and ensure the gender, racial and ethnic diversity of the workforce and senior management, as well as increase contracting opportunities for minorityand women-owned businesses. Representative Waters also fought to ensure that in winding down struggling financial institutions, regulators considered the impact on low-income, minority, and underserved communities where access to mainstream banking is a problem. And to help stem the tide of housing foreclosures, she secured $1 billion with an additional $1 billion commitment from the Treasury Department to help unemployed homeowners receive low-interest loans to pay their mortgages. As a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Representative Waters has also traveled the country to shine a spotlight on the problem of urban unemployment and has worked with Congressional Members of both parties to pass critical jobs legislation. With the retirement of Barney Frank, Congresswoman Waters is in line to be the ranking Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee. We applaud her leadership and are pleased that her Ethics Committee exoneration removes any obstacle to her ascendency.

OPINION/EDITORIAL
life as the moment of conception. In the face of contradictions from independent studies, Romney still asserts that the numbers for his 20% across the board tax cuts add up. Outside of Romneys Team, I know of no economists who will validate his claim of these cuts being revenue neutral. I doubt that whats left of the Middle Class could weather the tax burden predicted for his plan. The most egregious of his lies relates to proposed healthcare under a Romney administration. Romney claims insurance protections for persons with pre-existing conditions, but a closer look at the truth discloses that, just like in pre-Obamacare era, these protections exist for those who can maintain insurance without interruption. If, having a preexisting condition, you lose or relinquish coverage, you wont be able to regain it. Lest we forget that the second debate lie Candy Crowley caught him in was not Romneys only lie, we need to pay closer attention to the potential impact of these lies. As with many others, my review of the Romney Presidential campaign has revealed more lies than I have space in which to write. Romney once stated he didnt know what he said, but he stood by it! Eric Fehrnstrom, his spokesman, said Romney would reset like an Etch A Sketch. Accordingly, I can direct you to any number of Romney

Real Victory Requires Truth!

(TriceEdneyWire.com) - As I basked in the glow of President Obamas clear victory in the second debate, I reflected on the nature and depth of the lies and omissions that have permeated the Romney presidential campaign. I tried to recall as many lies as possible, but the job was simply too big! Rachel Maddow has been highlighting the Mitt Romney dr. e. faye lies since early in the year, but WiLLiaMs, esq. listing all or most of them is a very tough job. Mr. Romneys character reminds me of the old question of How do you know when a politician is lying? -- His lips are moving! As I struggled with the volume of Romneys lies, I realized a more realistic focus was on those during the period surrounding the debates. Romney has claimed, Theres no legislation regarding abortion that Im familiar with that would become part of my agenda. Two hours after that remark, his press secretary pushed back by saying Romney would, of course, support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life. Romney himself said he would absolutely support a Constitutional amendment defining the beginning of lies, and proclaim that he is indeed making full use of the Etch A Sketch! What I cannot explain is the willingness of some people to ignore his vast array of lies and seriously consider voting for him. Even more perplexing is the willingness of some to ignore the threat he poses to the direction of our country and the future of our democracy. Its frightening to think that, despite his lies, he is considered a viable candidate. Even more frightening is the fact that his lies and arrogance could propel him to a perceived victory in the first debate. President Obamas supporters can relish the fact that most of the nation acknowledges a clear second debate victory for our President. It was a heartening solid performance based on truth and compassion. We can celebrate the Presidents verbal deftness and command of the facts as he withstood Romneys barrage of arrogant misrepresentations. The Presidents win was a great one-- but his win in the second debate or another in the third are not the important ones. The final victory is the prize the one on November 6, 2012! Thats when the American people can rise to the occasion and say, We believe in victory based upon truth.

Did Harvard Really Reject Jay-Z as a Business Role Model? I Sincerely Hope Not
Maria Lloyd recently wrote an article in which it was claimed that the rapper Jay-Z was rejected by a career counselor at Harvard University as an appropriate business role model. I am not sure of the exact circumstances of the students allegation, and I am not sure if other Harvard faculty agreed. All I know is that a dr. Boyce young woman said that she Watkins admired Jay-Z for what hes achieved in the business world, and she was shot down faster than an unidentified single engine plane flying over the White House. When I read the article, it made me sad and a little bit disgusted. I dont like Jay-Z very much, to be honest. Although he is nothing short of a lyrical genius, I am deeply concerned about any man who earns over $60 million dollars in a year and only gives $6,000 to charity. I had to agree with Harry Belafonte when he said that todays black artists, namely Jay-Z and Beyonce, are ignoring their social responsibility by refusing to fight on the issues affecting black America, including violence, poverty, unemployment and mass incarceration. Also, the idea of making millions of dollars by promoting yourself as a n***a in Paris to white people around the world is the epitome of a modern day minstrel show. But in Jay-Zs defense, I must say that any business school professor who doesnt believe that students can learn from him is DEAD WRONG. Ive taught in various business schools over the last 19 years. One of the most interesting things about teaching in a school of business is that you quickly find that most business school professors dont know how to go out and actually make money. Sure, theyre experts at producing highly-complicated research papers that no one is ever going to read. But when asked to go into the real world to show that they can do the things theyre teaching students to do, most of them fail the test. Read Original Article At Reason 4 Rhymes
