Thursdays Nov 15 & 29, 68pm, $15 drop-in, $30 for both days Dancing With Gravity This is a two day dance workshop that will use somatic practices such as core strengthening and alignment to support one's expression when moving through the floor. It will contain a vigorous floor warm up and standing exercises. We will expand on common practices by taking standard contemporary vocabulary off balance. You are welcomed to take one or both classes. This course is an exploration of gravity within the context of contemporary dance. We will expand on basic floor work techniques to emphasize weight, momentum, and rebound as initiation points for floor work. We will fall through space using gravity as a tool instead of a hindrance. We will explore both giving into gravity and resisting it. On the second day we will investigate these practices as they relate to contemporary partnering. We will use contact improvisation to develop a greater understanding of how to negotiate lifts through body communication. The workshop will culminate in a series of choreographic phrases that further explore and expand on the concepts emphasized in this class. Special guest musician Daniel Mullikin will accompany both classes with his experimental electronic cello. Join us for fun and exploration

Moving amongst the multiplicity of characters that co-exit within us in all their glory, darkness, wisdom, & incongruity. Being carried along buoyantly by something other than narrative & conscious psychology by undercurrents of texture, by not-yet-articulated ideas, by wafts of the indescribable. Honoring the infinite complexity & depth of each moment.
BETTY JO COSTANZO
Saturday November 17, 12 -6pm, $40 participant fee, registration required!!!! Action/Reaction: Drawing + Painting to Moving Images & Sounds This 6 hour workshop will throw you right into action: no time to think, no time to plan. With moving images and sounds already in action we will begin by shifting the mind and body thru a series of led exercises (butoh drawing). We will then move directly into the physical artmaking process and like a dance this call and response will engage all the senses. After the work session is complete we will have time to look, reflect and discuss our experience and findings. Come prepared with all of your materials and props (more info about materials provided when you sign up for this workshop).
What is color really about? Do we really know? What colors do we connect with specific emotions? My aim is to advance color awareness, and to research peoples conception and use of color in language and art. I propose a workshop that involves categorization exercises and games to understand the commonality of human approach to color. We will name colors, and talk about what their prototypes are. We will talk about what colors are ugly and what colors are beautiful, and how they make us feel. We will identify primary colors in contemporary color theory (i.e., they are not red, blue, and yellow). I hope to create curiosity about what our minds do with color, by creating color illusions. The workshop will be hands on and show and tell. The participants will be asked bring a series of things. Color is a sensation. It is perceived, cognized, and categorized before reaching a linguistic form. Color terms are metaphors of that process. Color as a pigment or a material is very different from color as light. If we consider color from various fields or frames, such as: art, architecture, music, culinary arts, philosophy, psychology, biology, physics, or linguistics, psycho- linguistics, and cognitive sciences, we will be focusing on different aspects of color. The common denominator, is that color is of fundamental importance. Color is an experience; color represents itself and its opposite (or complement); color is universal and at the same time culturally significant. Color is fundamentally omnipresent in our lives, and yet our awareness of color is limited. Lets see how we attach emotion to color, and how we can agree on how to call it and how to use it.
