SUBJECT INTRODUCTION
Today it is widely recognized that information system knowledge is essential for managers, because organizations need information system to survive and prosper. Information systems can help companies extend reach to faraway locations, new products and services, reshaping jobs and workflows and the way they conduct business. All types of businesses, both large and small are using information systems, networks and internet technology to conduct more of their business electronically, achieving new levels of efficiency and competitiveness. There has been powerful changes worldwide and have altered the business environment. In a knowledge and information based economy, information technology and systems take a great importance. Knowledge based products and services of great economic value such as credit cards, reservation system are based on new information technologies. Across all industries, information and the technology that delivers it have become critical, strategic assets for business firms and their mangers. Information systems are needed to optimize the flow of information and knowledge within the organisation and to help management maximize the firms knowledge resources. As the employees productivity depends on the quality of systems serving them, management decisions about information technology are critically important to firms prosperity and survival. Unit Introduction This book contains ten units or chapters, each designed to cover very comprehensively aspects of Management Information System.

Unit 1 provides overview of Management information system, highlighting the concepts of MIS information. It also explains managing information in global context Unit 2 explores the information needed by the managers in today global context and analysis of different functional information needs is underlined. Unit 3 is on the information demands on organisation and individuals where in the human versus computer and the development of organisational computing is included. Unit 4 is on the structure of MIS where in the components of MIS is elaborated. In addition, an introduction of Management Reporting system, DSS and EIS are covered. Unit 5 discuss the Information needs for strategic planning, which are directed at the various strategies adopted for competitive advantage and performing situational analysis are explained. Unit 6 is exclusively devoted to the managing the corporation in this competitive world using ERP system. This throws light on the modules, architecture and the selection of ERP. Unit 7 defines and discusses the threats and issues of using networks in the work and highlights the development of MIS plan and their implementation. Unit 8 investigates on the process reengineering concepts and the link with MIS and BPR. Unit 9 presents the complexity of decision-making and the support of MIS to manager highlighting the limits and influence of individual styles. Unit 10 explores on the types of problems faced in the organisation and when and how to use DSS approach. It highlights the classification, components and building of DSS. It also deals with how DSS differs from EIS.
