New species of coelacanth fish discovered

Scientists have discovered a new species of coelacanth fish whose tiny pieces of fossil skull are 100 million years old. The coelacanth has one of the longest lineages, 400 million years, of any animal. The discovery, made in Texas, is significant because it is most closely related to vertebrates, including humans. The Southern Methodist University (Dallas) specimen is the first coelacanth in Texas from the Cretaceous (period), extending from 146 million years ago to 66 million years ago, said John F. Graf, the palaeontolgist who identified the fossil and named it Reidus hilli. Previously, the youngest was a 200 million-year-old coelacanth from the Triassic. Reidus hilli is the first coelacanth ever identified from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, according to a Southern Methodist statement. Coelacanth fossils have been found on every continent except Antarctica. The species has eluded extinction for 400 million years. Scientists estimate the coelacanth reached its maximum diversity during the Triassic. the gases that resulted in the formation of any particular star. Rangarajan panel recommends deregulation of sugar sector

The Rangarajan Committee in its latest report, submitted to the Prime Minister, recommended deregulation of the sugar sector, the only remaining industry that continues to be controlled by the government, by giving freedom to mills to sell sugar in the open market. It has also suggested doing away with the system of levy sugar, under which the mills are required to sell 10 per cent of their production to the government at below market price for running ration shops. Levy sugar is meant for distribution in the ration shops, while non-levy sugar is for sale in the open market. While other sectors of the economy have been freed, the sugar industry continues to remain under the government control, right from the level of production to distribution. The Centre fixes the quantity of sugar that mills can sell in the open market and ration shops. The industry has been for a long time demanding the government do away with the systems of regulated release mechanism and levy sugar obligations. The expert committee was set up by the Prime Minister to examine issues related to decontrolling the sugar sector.

This classification is expected to feed into the larger UN process of creating a new global treaty for conservation of biodiversity in international waters.
