Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya 150th Birthday Celebration of Swami Vivekananda

To commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Mission is organizing various projects for integrated child development, for the improvement of childrens health by eliminating malnutrition, for empowerment of women, and for alleviating poverty. Besides, the Mission will distribute books on the message of Swami Vivekananda to various libraries and will hold national and international seminars in various places on Swamijis contribution to Indian and international cultures. The Mission is also planning to produce films on Swami Vivekananda. The Celebration Swami Vivekanandas actual 150th birth anniversary year is January 2013January 2014. The event will no doubt be celebrated by many organizations and lakhs of people all over India and in many other parts of the world. The Government of India itself has made it a national celebration. The celebration organized by Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, however, has certain unique features. In the first place, we have planned a series of service programmes as a prelude to the actual birth anniversary celebration. We have taken up, from 2010 itself, certain important service projects which were dear to the heart of Swami Vivekananda. The main focus of these projects is on two areas: (1) Value education and (2) Service to marginalized people (who include the poor, the backward, and the tribal). Value Education With the popularization of cell-phones, internet and other electronic and print media, secular, materialistic ideas and unhealthy tendencies such as indiscipline, aggression, drug addiction, alcoholism, and immorality are also spreading among the youths. As a result many of our youths run the risk of losing faith in God and religion and straying away from the moral path. It is therefore important that a proper understanding of moral values and spiritual values should spread among the youths of today. With this end in view the Ramakrishna Mission has begun a multi-pronged scheme of value education. This includes 1) Distribution of a short life and inspiring teachings of Swami Vivekananda written in various languages among the youths. 2) Distribution of books on moral and spiritual values, and programmes of value education for students and youths. 3) Gift of the Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda (9 volumes) and the Cultural Heritage of India (8 volumes) to all university libraries and other governmentapproved libraries.

4) Special youth counseling programmes for youths. 5) Involving youths in constructive work of social service. Service to the poor and backward Recent surveys have shown that nearly 37 percent of Indian population is below poverty line. India has the highest rate of death of children below 5 years in the world. The highest rate of maternal death after delivery in the world is also in India. Millions of Indian children suffer from malnutrition. A significant per cent of Indian women are under-nourished. Ramakrishna Mission has launched 4 massive service projects as its own modest contribution to remedying the above situation. These are mentioned below: (a) Gadadhar Integrated Child Development Project. This aims at the all-round (physical, mental and spiritual) development of children. (b) Vivekananda Health Care Project. This aims at the elimination of malnutrition from the ranks of children on the one hand, and providing medical care in the form of medical checkups, immunization, etc. on the other hand. (c) Sarada Integrated Rural Development project. This aims at the education and selfempowerment of women through gainful employment, training in skills etc. d) Akhandananda Poverty Elimination Project. This involves the adoption of 10 pockets of poverty (some in urban and some in rural areas) for intensive development. Other Programmes Apart from the major long-term projects mentioned above, several other cultural and spiritual programmes have also been planned as parts of the celebration of Swami Vivekanandas 150th Birth Anniversary. Some of these programmes are mentioned below: a) Regional and National Youth Conventions and Camps. b) Seminars on moral, social and spiritual themes. c) Inter-religious and Intra-religious conferences. d) Exhibitions, video shows, feature film shows on the life of Swami Vivekananda. e) Festivities of different kinds. Finance For some specific projects approved by the Government, such as Value Education projects, Integrated Child Development Project etc, the financial assistance of the Government of India is available. But for the rest of the projects, especially those concerning cultural and spiritual matters, we have to depend on public charity. It may be noted here that the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission are exempt from Income Tax under Section 80G. For some special projects we are trying to get 100% tax exemption under 35 AC. d d d d d
