Its crazy to think that next month is Christmas & another new year is right around the cornergeez makes me stop & think just how fast this year has flown by. Sometimes its a good thing that time passes so quickly but when it comes to looking at life after a certain age, it really does start to go like a roll of toilet paper the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes ha ha. The good Lord willing, Im no where near the end of my roll but its good to check yourself once in awhile to make sure youre not so busy that youre missing out on important things. Its kind of like haulin butt down the road on your bike. Youre so busy trying to get there as fast as you can that you didnt get to enjoy the wonderful things around you & the trip becomes a blur. We would like to say a huge THANK YOU to all of our Veterans for your service for our country it takes great dedication, personal sacrifice & honor to be in the military & you never truly fathom how deep that honor goesWE SALUTE YOU! By T.J. Miles Hello everyone, my name is TJ Miles. Im a writer specializing in Motorcycle Safety. I grew up in Southeast Texas and permanently landed in the St. Louis area 3 years ago upon retirement from the US Coast Guard. Ive spent my whole life on two wheels. I currently manage the Scott AFB Motorcycle Safety Program and have 7 years of experience as a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Rider Coach. I created and author a monthly motorcycle safety column, Safety Asylum. The column spent the last 3 years with another publication. I am excited to announce that Safety Asylum has now moved to Thunder Roads Magazine. Big thanks to the owners of Thunder Roads for their investment in spreading the word to our readers about motorcycle safety. Time to get down to business! How many of us garage our bikes once the leaves turn brown? Not me! Experienced riders understand riding a motorcycle during cold weather requires proper planning. We might be able to ride for a short distance with less than effective cold weather gear. However, anyone could fall victim to a well known contributor to motorcycle fatalities called HYPOTHERMIA! Not to mention, turning into a popsicle on a motorcycle is a damn painful process which diverts attention away from the task at handRIDING! Hypothermia is a decrease in the core body temperature that can sneak up on us and seriously reduce our ability to think and move. Cold temperatures, improper clothing, fatigue, dehydration, poor food intake and alcohol intake lead to increased heat loss. Shivering is proof that a persons core temperature has fallen below 97 degrees F. Riding any further will continue to rob the body of heat. If the core temperature becomes colder, concentration will diminish, reactions will slow and motor skills will become clumsy and imprecise. Watch for changes in motor coordination and levels of consciousness when riding in cold weather. A rider suffering from Hypothermia will have trouble with controls and find they have to concentrate on steps which usually feel second nature. Check the weather forecast before leaving and carry or wear the proper gear for the temperature. The wind chill factor will be 17F if riding 60mph in 35F. The average temp difference between day and night in the Midwest is 20F. It may be 55F when you leave the house. However, 17F wind-chill factor on the way home will cause hypothermia within seconds. Its odd to witness a rider, who would never ride after drinking, think nothing of riding while shivering even though they are similar in reducing the ability to react to hazards. Inexperienced riders already have one strike against them. Cold weather, alcohol, speed, traffic and an abundance of other hazards will easily add up and take a rider out of the game. Reduce the number of hazards when riding to increase the rate of survivability. Start by reducing the effects of cold weather. Layered Clothing Street clothes are useless! Motorcycle gear sewn correctly, made of materials such as thinsulate and leather is highly recommended. Dress in layered clothing (thermals) and cover all exposed skin. Block the wind and keep your head

warm. Make sure your passenger is also dressed properly. Cold weather can easily freeze a hot date with one quick ride! Helmet A full-faced helmet provides the best protection from the cold and a half helmet helps. Ive witnessed extreme motorcyclist activist wearing full face helmets when its cold. Why? Because they have enough experience to say that they have been there and done that. A neck gator or balaclava mask keeps the wind out and is essential also. Gloves Use the layers principle for your gloves. Many gloves come with an insulated inner layer. Make sure you can cinch your sleeves and/or have gauntlet style gloves to keep the wind out. Some use ol fashion sweat bands to cinch down the gauntlet portion of the glove to the sleeve of the jacket. Boots Wool or insulated socks will keep your feet warmer. Boots keep your ankles warm. A quality pair of insulated boots makes a huge difference. Old schoolers use leather waist belts wrapped several times around the bottom of their pant legs or tuck their pants in their boots to seal out the wind. Hardware Heated grips, heated seat, windshield, wind deflector and hand covers are fantastic products for fighting the cold. Heated Garments Supplement our bodys natural heat production. Heated vests, jackets, pants, gloves and boots all help keep us warm. These items usually run on batteries, the bikes electrical system or chemicals. Riding in the cold can be a great experience as long as you are prepared for it and know your limits. Rubber does NOT have the same amount of stick in cold weather so slow-down in curves. Be careful of black ice in shadows and salt or sand left over from ice removal efforts. If you wear the proper gear, slow down and avoid the slick spots, riding in cold weather can be as comfortable and fun as riding on warm days. An investment in cold-weather gear simply enhances your investment in your bike. Im always looking for new motorcycle safety subjects. Our mission, Remember, Honor, Teach, is carried out in part by coordinating wreath laying ceremonies on a specified Saturday in December at Arlington, as well as veterans cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond. We also organize a week of events including international veterans tributes, ceremonies at State Houses and a week-long Veterans Parade between Maine and Virginia where we stop along the way to spread our message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms. This week of events is made possible by thousands of volunteers who organize local ceremonies, raise funds to sponsor wreaths, and participate in the events. We receive no government funding. The cost of our programs is paid by individual wreaths sponsors, corporate donors and volunteer truckers. We also coordinate veteran services and recognition through a variety of programs, and provide schools with teaching aides for projects throughout the year. How Can You Get Involved? Wreaths Across America needs your help to reach our goal of placing 500,000 wreaths on veterans graves in 2012. And every time you help us honor our veterans and active military, you are also honoring their families and preparing a new generation to appreciate our freedoms. Rutabagas are often thought of as yellow turnips but actually bear the botanical name Brassica napus and belong to the highly prized family of cruciferous vegetables. The rutabaga, a relatively newcomer in the world of vegetables, is thought to have evolved from a cross between a wild cabbage and a turnip. The earliest records of rutabagas existence are from the seventeenth century in Southern Europe where they were first eaten as well as used for animal fodder. Its curious that throughout history animals were often fed the healthiest foods, foods thought to be inappropriate for human consumption. Because rutabagas thrive best in colder climates, they became popular in Scandinavia, but especially in Sweden, the country that earned them the name swedes. In Europe, rutabagas are still called swedes. In America, rutabagas were first cultivated in the northern parts of the country in the early 1800s. Canada and the northern states are todays greatest producers of the rutabaga. One of the primary benefits of rutabagas is their high vitamin C content. Foods high in vitamin C benefit your digestive health and have been associated with a reduced incidence of colorectal cancer. Rutabagas also provide a source of zinc, an essential mineral that plays a role in your immune system function and metabolism, and provides protection from physiological stress. Like many vegetables, rutabagas contribute to your dietary fiber intake. Sufficient fiber consumption protects against disease, and people who consume enough fiber enjoy a lower risk of constipation, colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes. The rutabaga is a root vegetable that looks very much like a turnip with yellow-orange flesh and ridges at its neck. Although this beta carotene-rich vegetable has been grown and marketed in our country for nearly 200 years, it remains an uncommon food in American dining. Its actually a great tasting vegetable with a delicate sweetness and flavor that hints of the light freshness of cabbage and turnip. With its easy preparation and versatility, great nutrition, and excellent flavor, the rutabaga can easily become an endearing family favorite. With its strange looking waxey exterior, most people dont know how to prepare rutabagas but its really very simple. Just peel/cut away the waxed skin. Cut the root ball into sections then into small chunks, just like you would a potato. Rutabagas are denser so youll have to use a little umph when cutting up. Put chunks in a pot, add water just to cover them. Bring to a boil & then turn down to medium & continue to boil for about 15 - 20 minutes until slightly tender. Drain, mash, add butter, salt & pepper....enjoy!

turn. I gave her the throttle and prayed for the best. He hit me right behind my left leg. I went 120 yards swaying back and forth but finally got my bike stopped and put the kick stand down. The gentleman said he didnt know what he hit until he looked and saw me fish tailing down the road. I argued with 911 trying to tell them I was the one on the motorcycle. The OHP tried to call an ambulance as well as a tow truck. I refused. Then the guy who hit me said he had a trailer to which I responded have you ever hauled a bike before?!?! He hadnt do I enlisted the guy and OHP to pull the fender off my tire and swung my leg over her and told them to follow me for a mile and Id wave them off if I could do it. I was seven miles away from home. Once I got there, I took myself to the hospital. I ended up having pulled tendons and ligament in my left ankle which resulted in a cast, torn meniscus in my left knee, tendinitis in my left shoulder which resulted in a sling and they summonsed me to crutches!! I have 3 blown disks in my neck and have been fighting surgery as the neurosurgeon cannot guarantee the results. I was off work for two months, but it didnt keep me from my passion of riding once healed. She, like many others whove been hit have learned, it is dangerous and we never know when it may happen to us. Furthermore, we have to watch out for other riders when we get in our own four wheels. The gentleman who hit her is a fireman who is all too aware of the dangers of riding. There was over $4500 in damage done to her trusty steed in the accident. With a lot of TLC shes better than ever now. Her ride is a 2004 Honda VTX 1800. She has done many modifications includ-
Article by Terri T Collier, TRM Oklahoma. Photos by Wildhorse I recently had an opportunity to do an interview with one of my fellow lady riders whom I admire, Rebecca Wildhorse. She has an interesting story that is worth sharing. This year, the National Director of Sisters in Spirit riding group, Linda Blankenship, lost her battle with cancer. It was a very sad loss for the women in this National riding group which was founded by her in Tulsa, OK. The group began as a place to promote women motorcyclists. They currently have members in 38 states, as well as, Canada and Argentina. As Linda had requested of her members, keep on riding and promoting our motto of being ladies first and bikers second. Upon her passing, there was no better choice to graciously take her position than Wildhorse. She had been serving as VP National Operations and was one of the first founding members. Wildhorse said that she began riding horses, the equestrian variety, prior to the iron variety. She said, Before I was old enough to walk, my dad had me riding horses. Im known as the Chrome Cowgirl, Real and Steel. If Im not on my motorcycle, Im on a horse. Ive been schooling horses since I was 6. Ive done everything from barrels, poles, roping, team penning and even square dancing on my BLM Mustangs and rescues. My Mustangs have a special place in my heart. It became a family affair adopting Wild Mustangs in 1995 from the BLM & schooling then into the most versatile all around horses. Her pa-pa Allen was an old school Harley man and loved horses. She says, Motorcycles and horses have been in my life since I was young because of him. My husband Darren got me more interested in motorcycles 8 years ago. I took his 2000 Honda Shadow 750 and he bought a 2003 Honda VTX 1800 in 2004. I purchased my Honda VTX 1800 Neo in 2006. I put around 8,000 miles a year on my bike. Most of the miles are in town as dont get to do long road trips due to a lack of vacation days. Ive got almost 70K miles on my Neo. Fall Weather Riding Tips

Fall weather in the mid Atlantic can quickly go from one extreme to another. Riding a motorcycle is a physical and a learned skill. As such, your skill set can diminish if you dont ride regularly. So if you have been off the bike for an extended period of time, take some time to re-acclimate yourself to your bike. If you are new rider, be sure you have the proper classification to ride your motorcycle. Find an open area or a parking lot and do some slow speed maneuvering and some braking drills, if the surface is conducive. Your nice, relaxing ride through the country should be fun, but dont relax too much. When riding, you have to maintain a constant state of awareness. If you ride with the concept of trying to identify every hazard you see, there wont be any surprises. When identifying or calling out hazards, there are no wrong answers. Call out everything: driveway, intersection, children, dogs, parked cars, oncoming line of cars behind a slow moving vehicle, blind curve, hillcrest, deer, gravel, construction, potholes, railroad crossing, etc. This exercise will help you prepare for something, but more importantly, it will force you to scan beyond your normal boundaries. If youre out for a nice ride and find yourself getting caught in the rain, youre going to get wet. Riding in the rain can be done safely if you follow a few simple rules. Keep rain gear with you if you have room. Riding while dry will keep you more comfortable and is less distracting. Keep a pair of clear glasses or wear a helmet shield of some type. Keeping the rain out of your eyes is imperative. Adjust your riding speed for the conditions. Keep in mind, when it rains for the first time after an extended dry period, there will be excessive amounts of oil on the road, making conditions extremely slick. Watch for standing water. Motorcycle tires by design are efficient at displacing water but are not exempt from hydroplaning. Remember water will pool in the normal vehicle tracks on the road and most roadways are crowned and, as such, water will be deeper on the right side of the road. Gear up, slow down, create distance, and stay focused. When fall begins to set in, the falling leaves can present an unassuming hazard. Many people venture out to see the fall colors, presenting a couple of hazards. Drivers may be a little distracted and not paying attention to the road and further may not see you. Be sure to keep your distance from other vehicles. Also, as the leaves begin to accumulate on the roadway they can be very slick. Whether wet or dry, driving through stacks of leaves can reduce traction, making it difficult to stop. A simple reduction of speed and awareness can make all the difference. Fall riding can present some particular hazards, none more problematic than deer season. As crops are harvested, the area deer can forage is reduced. Additionally, as farm equipment run through the fields, deer are being pushed into other areas and, in many cases, closer to the road. Hunters are also in the timber, pushing deer into other areas. We also have to consider this is the breeding season for deer and the fact they will be running more actively than normal. The best defense is to stay aware, particularly while in rural areas. Scan the roadway and just off of the shoulders and watch for deer crossings. Typically deer movement will peak at dusk and dawn. Areas where crops or timber are relatively close to the road will present the greatest challenge. These are ideal places for deer to cross and, unfortunately, will provide you the shortest reaction time. Fall in Virginia brings variable weather conditions. Often midday temperatures may be warm and comfortable for motorcycle riding, while overnight temperatures may be near freezing. It becomes necessary to be cognizant of frost on the roadway in the early morning hours during the fall. Be sure to pay particular attention for frost on bridge decks or other elevated surfaces, railroad crossings, and in shady areas where the morning sun might not have melted the frost yet. Dont get left in the cold. In the fall, temperatures can run the spectrum from warm to below freezing. In most cases, regardless of midday temperatures, the temperature will significantly drop once the sun starts to set. Its always a good idea to keep cold weather gear with you just in case you get detained or ride longer than you anticipated. Riding while extremely cold can cause a number of distractions. The rider will begin to shiver, get stiff, or ride in an unorthodox position trying to pick up some engine heat. All of these distractions can reduce your ability to control the motorcycle safely, not to mention just being uncomfortable. Its also a good idea to keep a pair of clear of glasses or a clear helmet shield for riding in low light conditions. You will want to treat them with some form of anti-fogging agent before riding in cold temperatures. Enjoy the wonders of fall & keep it safe out on the road!

FATALITIES FALL IN MICHIGAN AFTER HELMET LAW REPEAL The numbers speak for themselves, said Vince Consiglio, president of ABATE Michigan, in announcing a decrease in motorcycle deaths since the state repealed their mandatory helmet law. Despite dire predictions to the contrary, motorcycle fatalities actually have dropped by 7% based on statistics obtained from the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Secretary of State. On April 12, 2012, the requirement for motorcycle helmets was amended to allow adult choice for bikers 21 and older, providing they completed an accredited motorcycle-safety course or had a minimum of two years riding experience. According to an ABATE press release, from 2011 (pre-amendment) to 2012 (post amendment) motorcycle fatalities dropped from 89 to 85 in Michigan, a 4.5% reduction. During the same time period, the number of motorcycle registrations increased from 261,658 to 266,589, so ABATE concludes; If the fatality rate is adjusted to the total of motorcycle registrations it shows that the fatality rate has decreased from 0.034% to 0.031% since the helmet-law amendment - a seven percent reduction. This data proves conclusively that the helmet-law amendment had no adverse effect on motorcycle safety, Consiglio told The Detroit News. proportional to thefts, with California the leader in recoveries (2,085) followed by Florida (1,334), Texas (965), Indiana (769), and North Carolina (725). R.I. SALES TAXES HIGHER FOR MOTORCYCLES THAN CARS Normally, if youre buying a new car and you have a trade-in, you will only be charged sales tax on what you pay. But Rhode Island riders are roaring mad about an old law that forces motorcycle buyers to pay taxes on the full price of the bike regardless of the value of your trade-in. Richard Unsworth of North Scituate, RI complained to a local news station that he was burned by $600 in excess sales tax when he traded in his old bike on a new Harley-Davidson. When I went to the registry I expected to pay about $1,100 in taxes, he said. When I got done, it was like $1,700! Thats because Unsworth was charged sales tax on the full price of the motorcycle, even though he had a

trade-in valued at $7,500. My trade-in was taxed back in 1999, he added. Im paying again for the same $7,500! I dont believe its fair. An investigation by WPRI-TV Call 12 For Action uncovered a law in Rhode Island that only allows passenger vehicles to get a reduction in sales tax for the trade-in. Passenger vehicles, according to the law, do not include motorcycles or pickup trucks. This was a law that was actually passed in the 1940s when pickup trucks were mainly used by farmers and motorcycles werent that popular, said RI Tax Administrator David Sullivan. Now that its 2012, things have changed, but clearly the law hasnt. According to Sullivan, the revenue hit would be about $5-10 million a year if the General Assembly were to change the law to include all vehicles. Thats not expected to happen in the near future. Although there have been several attempts by legislators to make the change, but its been shot down every time. LEGAL BATTLES CONTINUE OVER MONGOLS CLUB COLORS An unprecedented federal government effort to seize the Mongols Motorcycle Clubs trademark has quietly become a quarter-of-amillion-dollar headache for the Justice Department, reports McClatchy Newspapers. Four years after prosecutors grabbed national headlines by seizing the Mongols logo, an appellate court must now sort out what the federal government might owe the clubs attorneys. It could be a lot, in a free-speech case thats also a cautionary tale about aggressive federal use of forfeiture to seize private property. What they did was an outrageous violation of the First Amendment, and an absolute abuse of forfeiture and trademark laws, American Civil Liberties Union attorney David Loy told the paper. Rebuking prosecutorial overreach, a federal judge in Los Angeles ordered the Justice Department to pay $253,206 to Loy and Alan Mansfield, an attorney with Consumer Law Group of California, who successfully challenged the prosecutors attempt to seize the Mongols trademark. Forfeitures are big business for the federal government. Last year, the Justice Department seized some $1.8 billion worth of forfeited assets. Typically, these are ill-gotten gains from drug trafficking, financial fraud and other criminal activity. Los Angeles-based prosecutors claimed a huge haul in October 2008 when they announced mass indictments of Mongols MC members, and in addition to physical assets such as motorcycles, firearms and other property, prosecutors sought to claim the Mongols trademarked name and logo. If any law enforcement officer sees a Mongol wearing his patch, he will be authorized to stop that gang member and literally take the jacket right off his back, then-U.S. Attorney Thomas P. OBrien declared at the time. But a judge in Los Angeles ruled last year that prosecutors had gone too far. The judge reasoned that the trademark belonged to the organization, not to individuals, and therefore unindicted club members should still enjoy the right to use it. Last February, another federal judge added that the Justice Department had to pay for the trademark fight because the government violated settled First Amendment and trademark law. The novelty of the governments position did not make it substantially justified, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter ruled. Rather, it took unlawful action based on an ungrounded and unsubstantiated legal theory, and without sufficient factual support. Because the complex case arose at the intersection of forfeiture, trademark and First Amendment law, Carter added, attorneys deserved the fair-market rates of between $525 and $650 an hour for the 461 hours spent challenging the government. The Justice Department is appealing the judges order to pay, however, with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals likely to hear the case next year. PALESTINIANS CRACK DOWN ON MOTORCYCLES Lawmakers in Gaza have continued their draconian campaign against motorcycle usage, taking the bold step of banning the import of spare parts for motorcycles into the ancient Palestinian city. Interior Ministry official Hassan Akashed has admitted that the move aims to directly reduce the number of motorcycles, which he claims are a main cause of car accidents. According to visordown.com, motorcyclists in the city have been subject to an ongoing crack down, banning them from riding after midnight, and restricting women from riding. The Interior Ministry recently announced that it was banning women from riding bikes or being pillion passengers, to limit accidents and protect community values. Israels blockade of Gaza has meant that parts for cars have been impossible to get hold of and the cost of maintaining them has become unsustainable for most. As a result, motorcycles have seen a huge surge in popularity. Just five years ago there were only about a dozen or so motorcycles in the city, but the number of motorcycles in Gaza had grown to around 15,000 by 2010. EUROPEAN BIKERS PROTEST VEHICLE-INSPECTION PLAN Thousands of motorcyclists rolled into Belgium to protest an EU proposal for regular mandatory bike inspections. The law would be expensive and useless, said representatives from the Federation of European Motorcyclists Association (FEMA) who met with European Union officials EU headquarters in Brussels as more than 4,500 motorcycles roared through the citys streets, protesting the proposed law that would introduce mandatory EU-wide road-worthiness tests for motorcycles. The new EU-wide regulations would supersede national safety inspection rules for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles, and FEMA said the law would offer no benefits expected in terms of safety, as proven by several independent studies. Members of Belgiums Federation of Angry Bikers (FBMC) turned out in large numbers for the protest. Only 0.3 percent of motorcycle accidents in Belgium and 0.6 percent in Europe are due to technical problems, FBMC head Joe Verrecke told the Belgian news agency Belga. Hello fellow bikers, I hope all of you have had a great riding season. This summer was a hot one and there seemed to be more bikes on the road than ever before. There were a number of fatal accidents in Southern Maryland that involved Motorcyclist. Our hearts are broken and hurt for the families involved we send out prayers to any of you who may have been touched by similar tragedies. This year during Delmarva Bike Week, Rushing Wind Motorcycle Ministry held the first ever Biker Sunday at Mariners Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View, DE. There was a good turn out and the church was packed. This year there was one service on Sunday morning. Next year we are looking for a two day Rally during Bike Week. I had a word that I shared out Psalm 37:23-24 New King James Version (NKJV) 23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. 24 For the Lord upholds him with His hand. Now a question is being asked, and the question is, What makes a man becomes a good man? Well, a man does not become good just because he does not use drugs, get drunk on alcohol, or chase women. A man does not become a good man just because he got money in the bank, or he has lots of degrees behind his name. That is a man does not become good by his own goodness because Isaiah 64:6 says that our own goodness or our own righteousness is nothing but a filthy rag before the Lord. So the question is still being asked: How does a man
becomes a good man? Psalm 100:5 says, For the Lord is good, his mercy is everlasting and his truth endureth to all generations. Since the Lord is good all the time, and all the time The Lord is good, then it is the Lord that makes a man a good man. And the Lord makes a man to become a good man when the man believes and receives Jesus Christ as His personal Lord and Savior.

A Koala is sitting up in a gum tree ... smoking a joint, when a little lizard walks past and looks up and says, Hey Koala ! What are you doing? The koala says: Smoking a joint, come up and have some. So the little lizard climbs up and sits next to the koala and they have a few joints. After a while the little lizard says his mouth is dry and he is going to get a drink from the river. But the little lizard is so stoned that he leans too far over and falls into the river. A crocodile sees this, swims over to the little lizard helps him to the side, and then asks the little lizard: Whats the matter with you? The little lizard explains to the crocodile that he was sitting smoking a joint with the koala in the tree, got too stoned and fell into the river while taking a drink. The crocodile says he has to check this out, so he walks into the rain forest, finds the tree where the koala is sitting finishing a joint, and he looks up and says Hey you! I was in a pub last Saturday night, drank a few, and noticed two very large women by the bar. They both had pretty strong accents, so I asked, Hey, are you two ladies from Ireland? One of them chirped saying, Its WALES, ya idiot! So, I immediately apologized and said, Im sorry. Are you two whales from Ireland? Thats pretty much the last thing I remember... Two blonds find three grenades, and they decide to take them to a police station. One asked: What if one explodes before we get there? The other says: Well lie and say we only found two. I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a couple ice cold beers. The day was really quite beautiful, and the brew facilitated some deep thinking on various topics. Finally I thought about an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the nuts? Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the nuts. Well, after another beer, and some heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with the answer to that question. Getting kicked in the nuts is more painful than having a baby; and here is the reason for my conclusion. A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, it might be nice to have another child. On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, You know, I think I might be ready to try another kick in the nuts. I rest my case. Women or Men....Blonde Jokes Are Fun: I was telling a blonde man friend of mine: Christmas is on a Friday this year. My friend replied; Lets hope its not the 13th. A woman phoned her blonde neighbor man and said: Close your curtains the next time you & your wife are having sex. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday. To which the blonde man replied: Well the jokes on all of you because I wasnt even at home yesterday. A blonde man spies a letter lying on his doormat. It says on the envelope DO NOT BEND . He spends the next 2 hours trying to figure out how to pick it up. A blonde man was driving home, drunk as a skunk. Suddenly he has to swerve to avoid a tree, then another, then another. A cop car pulls him over, so he tells the cop about all the trees in the road. The cop says, Thats your air freshener swinging about! While creating women, God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all the corners of the world. And then He smiled and made the earth round.

Carrie Seifert Tate and Amazon Racing Celebrate Their First AHDRA Nitro Harley Win!
We have followed Carrie Seifert Tate since last years AHDRA races in Tulsa, OK. We were thrilled to see that this years switch to the Nitro Harley Class has been so successful that she recently caught a first place finish! We congratulate the Amazon Racing Team on this win and wish them more success as they wrap up this years season. T Press Release from Amazon Racing Carrie Seifert Tate a.k.a. The AMAZON goes to the Winners Circle at the AHDRA Liberty Nitro Nationals in Catawissa, PA, September 9, 2012. Seifert Tate is currently Number 2 in National Points in the AHDRA Pro Drag Nitro Harley Class. She enjoyed her first win on her Hawaya Racing Pro Drag bike, Brutus, last weekend after two Runner Up finishes. The first in Atco, NJ, on May 20th then again at Norwalk, OH, June 10th. The Amazon Racing Team was ready for a big win. After the long 1,200 mile drive to Pennsylvania it was time to get down to business. During our test and tune pass Friday we discovered a clutch problem, says her Crew Chief and husband, Kerry Tate. I felt like we had it corrected Friday night so we were ready for qualifying on Saturday. We knew we might get only one qualifying pass in due to predicted rain so we needed to make it count. The Amazon came out strong, but she drifted to the center line taking out two cones on the big end of the track, Tate continues. The pass was disqualified and with the rain moving in we thought we were done for the weekend. Mr. Kerry continued to prep Brutus just in case the rain held off and luckily it did. The Amazon Racing Team made a second qualifying pass running a 7.637 putting them in the #3 spot. Sunday turned out to be a beautiful day for racing. The first race The Amazon lined up with Pete Stimling and was able to get by him with her 7.741 compared to his 7.951. We were still wrestling with a clutch problem going in to the semi-finals against the #1 points leader, Steve Pier of Bad Apple Racing, says Carrie. Steve is a fierce competitor and there is no room for error going up against him. I knew I was going to have to beat him off the line to get a little edge and hope everything held together. Steve and I have been dukin it out all season. Ive gotten by him once already in
Rockingham so I felt like we could pull it off and beat him again, she says smiling. Steve ran a 7.481 and The Amazon ran a 7.545. Unfortunately for Pier, he red lighted and Amazon Racing was going to the finals! We were headed to the finals against our friend and 2011 AHDRA Pro Drag Rookie of the Year, Rich Vreeland of Vreelands Harley-Davidson Racing, says Mr. Kerry. The Amazon was on her game and running wide open and straight as an arrow since her squirrelly first qualifying pass. I knew she was in her groove. We were still fighting the clutch problem so we had some strategic decisions to make. We didnt drive 2,400 miles round trip to be Runner Up. It was all or nothing, he says. The sound of Nitro burning Harleys comes to life and after the burn outs they both roll up to the staging lights. Rich had been riding like a champ all weekend and his brother Ray Vreeland was tuning his bike. Thats a tough combination to beat. One mistake on my part and wed be done for, says Carrie. Vreeland jumped The Amazon with a .126 reaction time to her .131. She pulled strong and straight all the way down the 1,320 with a 7.51 at 165.31 to Richs 8.149 at 115.12. The Amazon Racing Team pulled off the big win! Oils and Lubes 101:
By Wayne Tripp Power-Tripp Performance, Inc. The engine oil and lubricant industry is big business worldwide. This topic tends to become a heated discussion as many motorcycle owners tend to be rather opinionated on the topic, as well. For motorcycle manufacturers, the deal they make with a given oil company to use a specific oil can mean more than a few Dollars saved on each motorcycle produced, and cause many riders to use a specific oil brand that they might not otherwise be running. As a result, there is a great deal of marketing-speak, legalese, propaganda, old-wives-tales, and simply bad or confusing information concerning engine oils and lubes. In order to cut through to the heart of the matter, this article will attempt to simplify the topic to the bare bones, and provide information valuable to the life of your engine. To begin with, the first number on an oil bottle label is the viscosity (weight or thickness) at waters boiling point. The viscosity of the oil at near freezing temps is the W- listed in the oil weight on the label. Most oil base stocks have a starting viscosity close to 12-17 weight at 212 F, and 37 weight at 32 F. This means that most oil bases start as roughly a 12w-37 weight oil. Additive packages are then added to alter viscosity, improve high pressure wear, clean, prevent foaming, etc. It is the additive package that separates one oil of the same base stock from the others. Viscosity modifiers are branch-chain molecules shaped like springs. These wind and unwind like coils at different temps, altering the viscosity, and widening the viscosity range at different temps. However, these tend to be fairly fragile, and are easily broken up by gears - like in the transmission of a bike engine. As a result, bike engines that use engine oil for the transmission and other gears, tend to be hard on wide viscosity engine oils, and the shifting becomes notchy once the oil breaks down. In warmer climates, there is less need for wider viscosity ranges than in cold climates with those who ride year-round. Gear lubricants are tested and rated differently than engine oils. A 75w-90 gear lubricant actually has a viscosity roughly the same as a 15w-40 engine oil. In order to meet GL4 or GL5 ratings, gear lubes contain much higher levels of anti-foaming agents, as well as much higher levels of high pressure additives, with higher crush protection. With engines using separate transmissions, primary drives, and final drives, we need to pay particular attention to using the correct lubricant for the need of the parts. There are five groups for motor oil base stocks: Group I and II are standard refined mineral base oils. Group III is hydrocracked mineral base oil. Mostly meaning that parafins (waxes) have been removed. Group IV are Polyalphaolefin (PAO) synthetic base oils. Meaning that the molecules have been sorted by size for specific properties, and much higher temp stability. Group V synthetics are primarily esters and diester base oils produced from plant oils. Mostly made from banana, coconut, caster bean, etc., oils giving them their smell and stickiness, as well as high temp stability. Synthetic oil does not always mean what you may think. A good many years ago, Castrol started labeling their group III oil as synthetic. Mobile filed a complaint with the advertising division of the Better Business Bureau on this. The BBB decided that group III oils could be labeled synthetic in the
USA. As a result, many companies label Group III oils as synthetic in the USA. However, the rest of the world still only considers group IV and V base stocks as synthetic, due to the man-made nature of the stocks, temp stability, etc. Synthetic blends are mineral base stocks (usually group II) with up to 30% PAO or ester/diester base stock added - including the additive packages. While this does improve many characteristics of the oil, the improvements tend to come with a considerably higher price tag. Generally speaking, a 50/50 blend of group II oil with a group IV or V oil will give 75% of the benefits of a pure group IV or V oil. Group I, II, and III mineral bases tend to start breaking down at 215 F 225 F. While Group IV, and V stocks tend to hold up to well over 325 F. With localized bearing temps able to exceed 450 F, the base stock used makes a big difference. Heavier viscosity oils require more work from the engine and oil system to pump through the engine. They also do not carry away localized heat as well as lighter viscosity oils. On the dyno, engines held at a constant engine speed and load tend to show operating temp differences of over 10 F between a 50wt and 40wt oils. However, some engine clearances and designs require heavier weight oils - especially at idle engine speeds and temperatures. Compared to group I, II and III oils, group IV and V oils regularly show improvements in output, reduced engine temps, and increased coast down, on the dyno, as well as higher ratings from Falex and wear scar tests. This is due to reduced friction, and improved high pressure protection. This allows you to run an even lighter oil viscosity, for even further gains in output, and heat carrying ability. However, there are some group IV or V oils that break down very quickly, and do not provide these benefits for many miles. Many bikes today come with synthetic or synthetic blend oils right off the showroom floor. Using a dedicated break-in procedure, we find that using group IV or V oils takes nearly twice the time compared to group II or III oils for ring seal to drop into place for targeted blow-by flow, when using a flow meter connected to the crankcase. Does this mean that you cannot or should not break-in an engine on synthetic oils? No, just that it may not be the best decision. Bike engine oils have reduced molybdenum content (for wet clutches), and higher zinc, phosphorus, and other high pressure additives (for valve-train components) than car oils, as well as much more anti-foam additives (for gears). In 2006, car oils significantly reduced the high pressure additives in these oils. This was in an effort to get catalytic converters to last 100,000 miles. These oils are not good for the valve-train on motorcycle engines. Some oils foam considerably more than others due to the action of the gears and rotating parts in the engine. This can be seen on bikes with oil level sight glass windows while on the dyno. It is easy for the rotating crankshaft, rods, etc. to pick up and form ropes of foamy oil in the crankcase. These ropes then pick up more and more oil - especially as you twist and turn the bike, and oil sloshes around in the crankcase. This makes these parts harder to spin, termed windage, which robs output and fuel economy from the engine. Oil cavitation adds air to oil. An engine oil will hold up to 9% of its volume in air. Unlike oil, air is compressible, and reduces the oils ability to form a hydraulic wedge in bearing clearances and between the cams and buckets. This reduces its ability to protect, and increases windage (robbing output). Reducing oil cavitation leads to longer lived engines, higher output, and improved mileage. While some of this information may be a bit simplified, it should help inform you of the differences in oils and lubricants. I hope it helps become more informed, less opinionated, and make better buying decisions.

3 WHEELS BASTARD
Febes 3 Wheels Bastard trike took about 1 year but it was certainly worth the wait time. The H-D FXR 1340cc engine is surrounded by a custom frame built by Calles Chopperdelar Sweden with an exhaust by FSD Design. On the rear there are two Hankook 295/50 R15 tires.
Peter Strm is a person we met online. He and his family live in Sweden and enjoy reading Thunder Roads Magazine as well as following us on Facebook. We got into a discussion about what he rides on the roads of Sweden. I thought it would be interesting to share with our loyal readers a few custom bikes in Sweden. As it turned out Febe, Peters wife rides her own and Janine, Peters stepdaughter, also rides her own. How cool is that? These bikes have won many bike show awards. Fabrication and assembly for each of these unique rides was done by Calles Chopperdelar Sweden, Ace Performance, and Peter Strm himself.
Purple Queen
Janines Purple Queen started off as a stock 1995 H-D Sportster 883. Obviously the Bobber look is coming back into style. Peter modified the rear fender and raised the tank. The detailed engraving was done by Andrea Gallinaro. The purple mini-flake paint was done by Daniel Fahlstrm.
Sportster Chopper
Peters ride doesnt have a name other than the Sportster Chopper. Most people would not recognize that this was a 1997 H-D Sportster XL 1200. Once the engine and drivetrain were transplanted into the Calles Chopperdelar custom frame, the bike took on a whole new look. The forks are by Ultima with Jrnhsten Triple Trees and the pipes are by FSD Design.
Romney
I met Governor Romney, shook his hand and had few words with the presidential candidate. He gave a point by point speech on how he planned to put this country back on track to a positive future for us and our children with smaller government and less control and restrictions for small businesses. CABBAGE & SAUSAGE STUFFING (for any meat) 1 lb. Bulk Italian Sausage (get at Deli; run thru grinder) 3 Cups of Chopped, Fresh Cabbage 1 Large Carrot; Shredded 1 Celery Rib; Chopped 1 Small Onion; Chopped 2 Tbls. Half & Half 3/4 tsp. Poultry Seasoning Sa;t & Pepper to Taste 3 Cups of Seasoned Stuffing Cubes 1 Egg; Lightly Beaten 3/4 Cup of Chicken Broth or Stock In a Dutch oven, cook sausage over medium high heat and just let it sit. Dont move it around. Let it get good and brown on the bottom......brown = flavor. Remove with slotted spoon and let drain on paper towels, keeping one Tbl. of drippings at bottom of pot. Add the cabbage, carrot, celery and onion to reserved drippings. Cook over medium heat until tender. Stir in cream, poultry seasoning and salt & pepper. Add stuffing cubes, egg and sausage; toss to combine. Stir in enough broth/stock to reach desired moistness. Also add a half stick of butter at this time. Transfer to a greased 11x7 baking dish. Bake covered for 30 minutes at 325 degrees. Uncover, spray with butter cooking flavored spray and bake an additional 15 minutes longer to get a good, crunch-crispy top. Fabulous! POTATO PUMPKIN MASH-UP 3 Cans of Pumpkin Pie Filling 1 Box of Premium, Instant Idaho Mashed Potato Mix Use Half & Half for Instant Potatoes, not regular milk 2 Tbls. of Parsley 1 Stick of Real Butter Salt & Pepper to Taste 2 Tbls. of Rosemary Mix instant potatoes as per box directions. Heat up your pumpkin pie filling in microwave. Gently fold your pumpkin into your prepared mashed potatoes. Add in the other seasonings and blend together. This has the most richest texture and unique taste. Divinely Different. OFFER UP A GRATITUDE PRAYER FOR THAT WHICH BRINGS YOU TRUE JOY.
FRESH, SHREDDED BEET SALAD 1 Tbl. Extra-Virgin Olive Oil 1 Large Beet; peeled & shredded 1 Tbl. Real Horseradish 1 Squeeze of Lime Juice (use little plastic lime as the leftover keeps good in fridge) 2 Tbls. of Parsley 4 Stalks of Scallion Stalks; chopped thin 1 Tbls. of Regular Mustard or Gourmet Toss everything together with your fingers, gently; making sure that all of the shredded beet if completely coated with dressing. If you like beets, you are going to love this recipe! HAPPY THANKSGIVING, BIKERS! MARIO BATALIS SIMPLE PEAR TART *I copied this down from the show in shorthand, but go to their on-line site for more in-depth elaboration. 5 Ripe, Firm Pears; peeled & cored and then halved lengthwise 4 Tbls. Real Butter 1/2 Cup Sugar or Splenda 1 tsp. Salt 1/4 Cup of Cinnamon 1 Pkg. of Quality Puffed Pastry Premium Vanilla Ice Cream or Homemade Whipped Cream Preheat oven to 375 degrees In a large ovenproof saute pan, melt better over mediumhigh heat. Once it starts bubbling, sprinkle in the sugar. Add pears to pan, cut-side down. Cook until sugar begins to turn light golden brown. Sprinkle generously all over pears with cinnamon. Take off heat and top with puff pastry; tucking edges down into the pan. Transfer to oven and cook for 25 minutes or until pasty is a darker, but still golden, crispy brown. Top with ice cream or whip up a bowl of homemade whip cream with just a cup of heavy whipping cream and one cup of confectioners sugar and a Tbsl. of real Vanilla. Whip in a cooled aluminum or glass bowl until stiff peaks form. This tart is so simple youll be making it often. It is absolutely scrumptious.

Fun Turkey Facts

The average weight of a turkey purchased at Thanksgiving is 15 pounds. The heaviest turkey ever raised was 86 pounds, about the size of a large dog. A 15 pound turkey usually has about 70 percent white meat and 30 percent dark meat. The five most popular ways to serve leftover turkey is as a sandwich, in stew, chili or soup, casseroles and as a burger. Turkey has more protein than chicken or beef. Turkeys will have 3,500 feathers at maturity. Male turkeys gobble. Hens do not. They make a clucking noise. Commercially raised turkeys cannot fly. Turkeys have heart attacks. The United States Air Force was doing test runs and breaking the sound barrier. Nearby turkeys dropped dead with heart attacks. A large group of turkeys is called a flock. Turkeys have poor night vision. It takes 75-80 pounds of feed to raise a 30 pound tom turkey. A 16-week-old turkey is called a fryer. A five to seven month old turkey is called a young roaster Mashed potatoes, pumpkin pies, popcorn, milk, corn on the cob, and cranberries were not foods present on the first Thanksgivings feast table. Lobster, rabbit, chicken, fish, squashes, beans, chestnuts, hickory nuts, onions, leeks, dried fruits, maple syrup and honey, radishes, cabbage, carrots, eggs, and goat cheese are thought to have made up the first Thanksgiving feast. The pilgrims didnt use forks; they ate with spoons, knives, and their fingers. The first Thanksgiving celebration lasted three days.
