Unit Title: Colors of the Rainbow, Reading Enrichment Unit Grade/Subject: Second Duration of Unit: Approximately 2 to 3 hours Materials

Needed: 8 inch tan circles for head, 4x6 inch tan circles for ears, 2x12 inch purple, dark blue, light blue, green, yellow, orange, and red strips for hair, and 2x4 inch white and black circles for eyes; Color Crayons, Marker, or Colored Pencils, Book relating to colors of the Rainbow (Book used is The Rainbow and You, by E.C. Krupp but any rainbow-related picture book will do) and writing prompts.

Understandings/Big Ideas: Reading for enjoyment can serve the purpose of learning and fun at the same time. Using mnemonics can help us remember important information. Books and technology are resources that we can use to learn beyond our own personal knowledge. Knowledge from this Unit Students will be able to name the colors in the rainbow, using the mnemonic Roy G Biv. Students will be able to name reasons for reading and using technology, such as for learning new knowledge and for pleasure.

Essential Questions: What are the colors of the rainbow? How can reading and technology help me learn? How can reading and technology be fun?

Skills from this Unit Students will trace over each color of the rainbow, using colored pencils, markers, or crayons. Students will create the ficticious character, Roy G. Biv, helping them to remember the colors of the rainbow. Using a writing prompt, students will write complete sentences about the colors of the rainbow. STAGE 2 ASSESSMENT EVIDENCE


Performance Task(s): Students will complete a writing prompt, writing about each color of the rainbow. Students will access and utilize the unit wiki in order to gather information. Students will create the ficticious character, Roy G. Biv, to help them remember the colors of the rainbow. Other Evidence: Ability to work collaboratively. Use of reading, writing, and communication skills to successfully complete the unit.

STAGE 3 LEARNING ACTIVITIES


Learning Activities: Day 1 - The teacher will begin by asking the essential questions and lead a discussion, allowing for assessment of students prior knowledge. - The teacher will then introduce the students to the character, Roy G. Biv and explain to students that each letter in his name represents a color of the rainbow. The teacher will then ask students if they can guess the colors. - The teacher will then explain to the class that they will have story time and will be reading the book The Rainbow and You, by E.C. Krupp. Day 2 - Teacher will begin by reviewing essential questions and elements of the story. - The teacher will then show students how to make a Roy G Biv using pre-cut paper items. - Students will begin making their own Roy G Bivs - Day 3 - Lead a discussion by asking students such questions as: Why do we read? Can we read for fun and for learning? How can technology be fun? How can technology help us learn? - The teacher will give each student a copy of the writing prompt, allowing them to write about each color of the rainbow, and trace the colors with the corresponding colored crayon, marker, or colored pencil. - Students access the unit website (http://melaniekilgore.pbworks.com/w/page/60421680/Colors%20of%20the%20Rainbo w ) and watch the video of the colors of the rainbow. - Students are allowed to choose a writing prompt to share and type on the unit wiki. - As a ticket-out-the-door students will share a reason for reading and using technology.
