LETRAN MENTOR ALAS PULLS AN ACE

My family, my life
By Ruth L. Navarra
The Knights were beaten by the San Beda Red Lions, 67-39, in Game 3 of the NCAA finals. The experience and the intensity of the Lions threw the Knights off guard. But Alas had other reason for his resignation. Ive been here for 12 years. Matagal ko ng iniisip, kung nanalo sana fitting farewell pero thats life, he said in a hoarse voice. Nagsusumbong sila (his sons) sa mom nila na wala na silang ginagawang tama. Dun talaga ako natouch. Two of his players in the team are his sons, Kristoffer and Kevin. Because he didnt want anybody accusing him of prefer-

LTIMATELY, coach Louie Alas chose family over basketball when he decided to step down as head coach of the Letran Knights.
ential treatment, Alas admitted that he was extra hard on Kristoffer and Kevin. Under Alas, the Knights trained as if there was no tomorrow. But at the end of the day, Alas would take the burden of a loss not his players. It was a good day for them (San Beda) and a bad one for us. Sabi ko naman sa kanila, wala namang pwedeng sisihin sa inyo diyan. Kung meron mang may nagkamali dito, ako yun. So you dont have to bow your heads down. Just move on, Alas said. The journey to the championship had not been easy. Their story could have been a Cin-

derella story. They were able to get past the San Sebastian Stags in the Final Four twice, earning them a spot in the finals. They were able to defeat San Beda on Game 2 when everybody else expected a sweep. Ang tama naming ginawa this season is sobra kaming nagsacrifice. We always went to church every day. This game, yung inexperience took its toll on us sa finals, said Alas. Letran didnt forget its spiritual side after getting battered by the Lions. The Knights went out of the locker room with rosaries around their necks. Alas wore two. Alas noted that the game overflowed with emotion especially for graduating players Jam Cortes and Carlo Lituania. The bad thing was that we lost and the good thing was that they learned a lot from it.

ALAS, not new to pressure-filled situations, stresses a point during a AUGUST DELA CRUZ huddle.
Hindi lang sa basketball magagamit ito kundi sa daily life nila, he said. I told the rest of the boys na may mga games pa naman like the Champions League. Sabi ko sa kanila, tapos na ang NCAA. Now, study hard. Hes leaving the team but he made sure that they will not be lost without him. He says he already recruited replacements for his graduating players. What hes really trying to find are big men because he knows that the team lacks the height advantage. The players will go back to training next week. He says that they will be trained on their perimeter shooting because that is what they badly need to improve on. When asked what he would do the rest of the day, Alas is quick to answer. Ill be with my family. Kung pwede din yung buong team ng Letran tonight, gusto ko din silang makasama.

Fear the roar as Lions paint the town RED

Courage San Beda!/Have Courage San Beda
After winning their first game with six healthy men, the Red Lions entered the Final Four with plenty to spare. The Mendiola-based warriors downed Perpetual Help Altas in the semis and got the boost when Letran stunned San Sebastian College in the other half of the draw. The Stags tamed the Lions twice in the eliminations but self-destructed against the Knights in the F4. Under the masterful guidance of former PBA gunner and San Beda Red Cubs star Ronnie Magsanoc, the Lions were clearly ahead of the pack. They stumbled in Game 2 of the title series, but not to worry. It was just a temporary setback. Lions pride is simply too much to handle for the Knights. Dennis U. Eroa

Baser Amer: Leading the Pack

By Patrick Leonard Mayo

N THE GAME of basketball, there are players who really have a knack for winning. These players not only hate losing but, more importantly, they know how to win.

din kami, lahat yun ginawa namin para lang manalo kami, added the 510 court general who was also hailed rookie of the year last season. The second year Marketing

major is no stranger to success having won multiple titles during his high school years as a Red Cub but winning two straight in the seniors division gave him a different kind of joy.

And with at least two more playing years for the big red school in store for Baser, the Mendiola dynasty has a good chance of extending its reign further in the NCAA.

And of the many prolific players in the NCAA, sophomore Baser Amer of the reigning basketball titlists San Beda Red Lions is a perfect example of a winner inside the basketball court as he led the Mendiola-based squad to a three-peat victory, thanks to his championship performance that earned him finals MVP honors. Bago mag-Game Three, iniisip ko kung paano ako makakatulong sa team, so naging aggressive lang ako at focused, said the 20-year-old point guard who hails from the south in Davao. Last game na, do-or-die na, so bawal na talagang magkamali. Baser gave it his all as he exploded for 20 points in Game One and 14 markers during the rubber match that helped the Red Lions build a huge cushion in the first half en route to San Bedas record-setting 17th mens basketball title. But Amer knows very well that being part of a winning squad and a three-peat team at that, requires a lot of patience and a lot of sacrifices. Yung lahat ng mga pinag-daanan namin buong season, yung Super Six kung saan suspended karamihan ng mga players namin, yung mga times na bumabaha pero nag-training pa

A SMILING Bedan coach Ronnie Magsanoc (left) congratulates Finals MVP Baser Amer for a wonderful demolition job. August dela Cruz

From the very beginning it has always been the players, said Magsanoc. Its a special season for the players. That first win [where San Beda won with only six players] was very important. We were also able to go to the Final Four seamlessly.

Coach Magsanoc basks in the glory of the moment

RONNIE Magsanoc, PBAs point laureate turned winning coach, didnt want to look back at the past. The rookie head coach of the NCAAs winningest team just wanted to savor the moment. When reminded by PDI scribe Jasmine Payo of his own success as a star high school player for the school under the legendary Ato Badolato, Magsanoc answered with a laugh. That was so long ago. At this stage, you dont think back anymore. You just think of the present. Just be grateful for the situation that you can serve the school. To the shock of the Letran gallery, San Beda turned a predicted shootout into a massacre, 67-39, before a jampacked crowd at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Both teams split the first two games of the best-of-three championship and fans and experts alike agreed that the decider would be bloody. The Knights and the Lions went into Game Three tied with 16 titles. But San Beda, smooth and unforgiving, had other things in mind as it took control of the match right from the opening bell en route to crowning itself the leagues winningest team. From the very beginning it has always been the players, said Magsanoc. Its a special season for the players. That first win [where San Beda won with only six players] was very important. We were also able to go to the Final Four seamlessly. Magsanoc got the surprise of his life when he replaced Frankie Lim at the wake of the controversial off-season brawl that led to the suspension of virtually the entire San Beda squad on its first game. There never really was a plan to be the coach of this team. Things happened and they found me to be the head, said Magsanoc, a member of the elite 25 all-time best players of the pro league. Trudging the Road to Glory

By Patrick Leonard Mayo
Months before the start of the season, the teams thenhead coach Frankie Lim and some of the teams players got involved in an altercation with the volleyball head coach of San Sebastian which eventually led to Lims resignation and suspensions on some of the players. Now the chance of defending their basketball title and repeating a three-peat all of a sudden turned dim. Then came the hiring of expro and former San Beda Red Cub Ronnie Magsanoc as the new coach of the team and

apparently the PBAs Point Laureate had his own way of dealing with the situation. I just tried to focus on the things that I have control of from the start. Winning his first NCAA title as a coach in just his first year at the helm is something that he attributes to the lessons and philosophies that he taught and learned from his players the whole endeavor leading to the schools 17th mens basketball championship which made them the leagues most successful team.

Marami akong natutunan sa kanila, at marami silang natutunan sa akin. Faith without fear was our battle cry and relying on confidence, composure and courage also played a big part. He added: We earned wisdom through the many failures that you encounter, failures that really helped us reach this far and win. But more than the winning the title, the rookie coach was all about his players and about giving back to his alma mater. Thankful ako and I really appreciate this opportunity to help the players reach their potentials and this is our way of giving back to the school, ended the winning coach.

Baste swingman sings Swan song

By Michael Angelo Jugado
IN his very last collegiate game donning the proud colors of the San Sabastian College-Recoletos Golden Stags, Ronald Pascual had the chance to win the game for Baste. Pascual, never gun-shy to take the big shot when it mattered most, had the chance to will the Stags to a return trip in the Last Dance against their tormentors of seasons past the San Beda College Red Lions and a shot at redemption against their arch-nemesis that denied them cage glory in the NCAA the past two years. But the basketball gods and goddesses had other plans in mind. He missed. Crestfallen by the bitter loss of the twice-to-beat Baste to the upstart Letran Knights, who put an abrupt end to his celebrated NCAA career, Pascual remains gracious even in defeat. Kahit talo kami sa last game ay proud pa rin ako sa team ko at sa sarili ko dahil kahit paano natulungan ko ang team namin sa loob ng apat na taon, said the 24year-old Pascual. And nothing is to be ashamed of for the long tom artist, whose deadly outside shooting and boundless athleticism catapulted him into his stature as one of NCAAs big time gunners. Pascual, a native of Mexico, Pampanga, bid adieu to his collegiate stint with the Red and Gold of Recto with his head held high. The sweet-shooting Pascual, a part of the Stags vaunted troika, known as the Pinatubo Trio which includes now PBA super rookie Calvin The Beast Abueva and reigning NCAA MVP Ian Sangalang, is playing for the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA D-league. Ang dadalhin ko sa NLEX na natutunan ko while playing for Baste is yung lumalaban hanggang sa huli, walang gi-give up kahit anong mangyari, said Pascual. The high-flying Pascual pulled out from the 2012 PBA Draft due to the plethora of Fil-Ams who joined the annual event while also trying to get more time to recuperate from his injury that slowed him down early in the season.
