The candidates have done everything they can do - They've traveled from house to house, up and down the state and across the country. They've run the gauntlet of media interviews and debates (except, of course, for entrenched incumbent Dianne Feinstein, who refused to debate her Republican challenger, Elizabeth Emken). Many of us met Elizabeth when she visited Humboldt County. She's a top quality candidate in a tough race. We also got to meet Congressional candidate Dan Roberts, whos running for what was Mike Thompsons seat. Theyve done their part. Weve done our part, weve walked precincts, made phone calls, persuaded friends and neighbors, donated time and money to our favorite candidates, and kept the faith in the middle of blue-state California. Its been quite a year.

Our Parliamentarian, Barbara Hecathorn will be installing our new o cers, incoming President Annette De Modena, 1st Vice President Jan Pierre, 2nd Vice President Sharon Cole, Treasurer Rebecca Crosby, Recording Secretary Sheryl Fearrien, and Director At Large Leola Santsche. Then we'll be taking time o for the holidays. There is no meeting - and no newsletter - in December. Come January, we'll chart a new course, and well focus on saving California.

Vee Sorenson has donated to HRWF a beautiful Christmas ornament from the United States Capitol Historical Society. It is made from the old marble steps of the capitol building itself, speci cally from the wing occupied by the U.S. House of Representatives. More than 9,000 have trod the east front steps originally installed between 1863 - 1865. When the steps became worn and uneven, they were removed and replaced in 1995. The Society crushed the marble to ne powder, then combined it with resin and decorated it to create this beautiful memento. Tickets will be sold at the October and November meetings, and awarded in November, in time for Christmas.

The clock is ticking and Tuesday elections are in our sights.

As a club, we have participated in many elections in history. Our beginning came in 1938, the same year NFRW started in Chicago, Illinois! The National Federation of Republican Women is a grassroots political organization with clubs across the nation and in several U.S. territories, making it one of the largest and most in uential women's political organizations in the country. We work to promote the principles, objectives and policies of the Republican Party; elect Republican candidates; inform the public through political education and activity; and, increase the e ectiveness of women in the cause of good government. The story of Republican women's clubs begins many years before women even had the right to vote. Inspired by the Republican Platform of 1872, which said: "The Republican Party is mindful of its obligation to the loyal women of America for their noble devotion to the cause of Freedom ..." , Republican womens clubs were o and running. In fact, the oldest such club on record was founded in Salt Lake City in the late 1800s. Today, we participate in the governing of our nation and promote public awareness of the issues that shape America. We welcome our incoming o cers for 2013. They have expressed excitement and enthusiasm about our club projects and how nice everyone is. They will have the pleasure of meeting new friends and members and learning more about our own history. Congratulations and best wishes to each of you! I would like to express my sincere gratitude and happiness for the time shared with each of you during these past two years. You are exceptional! In your generosity as volunteers, we have taken on tasks together, traveled to events and committed ourselves to the club and our community in ne fashion. I dont know any group that has more fun doing important works. It is with eternal gratitude that we remember those who have paid the ultimate price in service to our nation. We encourage everyone to y the ag, remember those Patriots and their families, and pray daily for those who continue to serve today.

News bulletin: American diplomat, two former Navy Seals and a fourth good samaritan murdered in Libya on 9-11-12! Next morning, Secretary of State spoke before media cameras, blaming the deaths on anger generated by an anti-Muslim video made in California. A bit later she accompanied the President to the Rose Garden, keeping a bit of distance between them, and seemingly trying to hide anger or fear from showing on her face. It didnt work! Something was obviously wrong besides the murders. The President repeats the same anti-Muslim lm story, then jetted o to fabulous fundraisers in Las Vegas and Colorado. A couple of minutes in front of cameras is enough work for one day! What more have Americans come to expect from this president??? The mainstream media continue the anti-Muslim lm tale day after day. The President spoke before United Nations General Assembly and repeated no less than six times that the murders were the fault of the in aming lm. In the course of six weeks, the story persisted, but bits and pieces of the truth leaked out. Fox News was on top of it but, generally, the rest of the media looked the other way. Suddenly, Secretary of State said she takes full responsibility for the deaths in Libya. The President is silent until second debate then, when pressed, said it is ultimately his responsibility. He went on to say that he called the murders an act of terrorism the morning after in the Rose Garden. Mitt tried to challenge this statement, but the moderator interrupted him and said the President was correct. In her haste to help her liberal comrade, she failed to check the transcript fully. She didnt know that the terrorism message referred to 9-11-01. She later apologized for her haste, but only Fox News reported it. On the evening of Tuesday, October 23rd, it was reported on Lou Dobbs program (Fox Business) that Hillary learned of deaths as they were happening and urged the President to do something, but he refused. (He could not bring himself to admit that Al-Qaida remains a horrible threat, after all, Bin Laden is dead. Anything else would disrupt his imagined Middle East peace legacy!) Fast forward to October 23 according to this latest report, Hillary is lawyering up for a ght with the President . lets just hope it comes soon enough for the rest of America to wake up and smell the corruption...
Note: This is a fast breaking, if under-reported story. Since this was written we have learned that the men fought for 7 hours, waiting for help that never came, because of an order to stand down. Many ask who gave that order, and all signs point to the White House. Americans wait for answers, mourn for the families, and cry with the father who demands honor and answers from the President. Charles Woods says 'This is about honor, courage and about love for America. And remember this, Mr President: my son and the others died heroes, and it's better to die the death of a hero than it is to live the life of a coward.

North Coast Honor Flight and the Eureka Symphony invite you to an evening of music and art at The Arkley Center on November 12
North Coast Honor Flight and the Eureka Symphony invite you to an evening of music and art honoring our Humboldt County WWII veterans at The Arkley Center on November 12, the day following Veterans Day, at 5:30pm. Musical director Carol Jacobson has selected a program of moving American music, including Our Town, by American composer Aaron Copland. Also featured will be portraits of the veterans by Trinidad artist, Kathrin Burleson, co-founder of North Coast Honor Flight. A reception following the concert will be hosted by Redwood Capital Bank. Dont miss this opportunity to celebrate and pay tribute to these American heroes. There is no charge for WWII veterans and their spouses. Admission is $12 for adults and $5 for children. Kathrin has been working on these portraits for nearly a year and has completed over 90. Her goal is to draw every WWII vet in Humboldt County, whether they have been on Honor Flight or not. If you know of a vet who has not been included, please contact Kathrin at 677-0490. Kathrin is collaborating with Lynda Moore and Margot Genger, producer of the North Coast Honor Flight Video Project, on a book that will feature the drawings along with interviews of the veterans. There will also be an exhibit of the drawings at the Morris Graves Museum of Art in the fall of next year. A permanent home for the collection is now being explored.

When asked for a list of endorsed candidates for the Voter Information section of sample ballots, county registrars of voters (including Humboldts) received an August 14 letter from the chairman of the California Republican Party that omitted presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The letter cited sections of the State Elections Code governing the matter. Apparently, a printing deadline required that the list be submitted prior to the Republican National Convenion when Gov. Romney was formally nominated, so the CRP did not include him. Ironically, the later Democrat convention made the deadline, said Peter Hannaford, chairman of the Humboldt County Republican Party. This technicality is unfortunate, he continued, because the Republican party is solidly behind the Romney-Ryan ticket.

History & Family Ancestry

Were very proud of our history as a club, and and our members have some interesting tales to tell as well...here are just two. Look for this to become a regular feature, and let us know if you have a story to tell.
n 1986, I began seriously researching my family roots and it has been an amazing 26-year project. It has lead to many trips across the country, tracing the important places our ancestors lived and the part they played in our country and its founding. Members of The House of Burgesses, 1619-1776 1619, July 31.--Capt. William Powell. At Jamestown, William Powell "Lieutenant"- was made Lieutenant Governor and Commander of Jamestown. On one trip taken with my husband Tom, we found the property where this ancestor lived and walked the beautiful land. My ancestor's name is listed on a marker in historic Jamestown. Another ancestor, Robert Easley, who lived in Henrico, VA, had a land patent jointly with Thomas Je erson, Thomas Turpin, and John Archer. My latest research discovery is that, in my Meadors- Moberly line, I am related to John Hancock. History has always been important to me and my grandfather James Austin told me so many interesting stories of our family, which I didn't record, so it has been the reason for many trips to trace the places that were of interest to my family. We have visited many ancestral homes and properties in East Tennessee. In 2010, we went to a Civil War Reenactment on ancestral property of one of my most cherished ancestors, Clisby Austin. It was a very emotional time to be on his property and to tour the home he built, which has been beautifully restored. Since so much information is available on the Internet and belonging to "Ancestry," many questions are answered, but there is always a new quest to trace. It has been so wonderful to connect with family members who are working to keep our family history documented and it is a very patriotic feeling.

s we approach the election, and with my love for history and genealogy, my thoughts keep going back to some of my ancestors Ive researched, who were instrumental in the formation of our country. I would love to have been a y on the wall when Valentine Hollingsworth and his family came to America in 1682. Later that same year, he lost no time in accepting the honor and challenge of becoming a member of the rst Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania, and served in several subsequent sessions of the Assembly. He was a Justice of the Peace and a signer of William Penns Great Charter and a member of the Pro-Provincial Council. Each subsequent generation of the Hollingsworth and related families has helped to make this a free nation; some were farmers, judges, lawyers, merchants, military men before, during and after the American Revolution. Nicholas Greenberry was the Governor of Maryland in 1692; another ancestor was a surveyor who assisted Thomas Holmes in laying out the city of Philadelphia. Dr. Samuel Young Keene served as a surgeon on General Washingtons sta during the American Revolution. All of these people had one thing in common. They came here for freedom: freedom of religion, freedom to choose an occupation that would support themselves and their families, and freedom to take part in shaping a new nation like no other before or since. How sad it is to see that freedom which was fought for by so many being eroded away by apathy and ignorance.

As of this writing, Mitt Romney is up by 7 points - 52%-46% - and it's looking good in the swing states. A big variable is Hurricane Sandy, which Peter Baker in The New York Times calls "A freakish two-in-one storm that could, if the more dire forecasts prove correct, warp an election two years and $2 billion in the making." We're sending this newsletter out early, so that you'll have it in advance of the election. There's likely still time for you to help get out the vote, we're walking precincts Saturday. Nov. 3rd, delivering Republican Voter guides to Republican voters, and we can use your help. We'll be waving signs on election day, and we'd love to have you join in the fun. The Times-Standard reports that the Tri-County Independent Living, the Humboldt Community Access and Resource Center (HCAR), and California United Homecare Workers are pooling their resources to o er free transportation for the disabled and elderly living in the greater Eureka area to get to the polls on Nov. 6... Reservations to ride the free voter bus to the polls on Election Day can be made through Monday (Nov. 5th) by calling the Humboldt Community Access and Resource Center at 443-7077. Callers will be asked to provide their name, address, mobility status, polling place address and requested pick-up time. Personal attendants are welcome to accompany riders. Additionally, you can call the Humboldt GOP O ce at (707) 442-2259, they have volunteers standing by to help get people to the polls.
