November 2012
FROM THE PASTORS DESK Dear Brothers and Sisters, Members and Friends of the Hill United Presbyterian Church: As we come to the conclusion of our 2013 FirstFruits Stewardship Emphasis, I am grateful to God for you and I am grateful to you for Your stewardship support of the ministry and mission of the Hill Church. As we come to the Thanksgiving season, we come to realize that everything we are and everything we have is given to us by God through Jesus Christ our time, our health, the creation, relationships, our talents, spiritual gifts and abilities, our money and property, as well as the Gospel. As Christian stewards, we serve God out of love for God and out of gratitude to God. Through the leading of our Lord Jesus, God helps us to use all of our gifts for the building of the Kingdom of God. One time Peter wrote, As each has received a gift, serve one another, as good stewards of Gods varied grace. Paul wrote Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you! Yours for Stewardship and Thanksgiving in Jesus Christ, Pastor Clark Rev. Clark Sawyer WORSHIP ATTENDANCE IN SEPTEMBER and OCTOBER 2012

Taking time to worship God through our Lord Jesus reminds us of who we are and Whose we are! The worship of God puts our lives and our life with God in the right perspective. As we gather for worship, study, fellowship, service and outreach, come and be with us, bringing and inviting loved ones, friends and neighbors to join you, join us and join God. Thank-you very much.

It was with joy that the Session received two new members of Hill Church by Reaffirmation of Faith: Lonnie Kuzia and Lynda Rysiewicz. We pray Gods blessing on Lonnie and Lynda as they join the Hill Family of Faith. Also, two Baptismal motions were presented by Worship and Discipleship: 1. To approve the baptism of Mason McElhaney, son of Michael and Tricia McElhaney, on October 14, 2012. 2. To approve the baptism of Hallie Fagan, daughter of Michael and Rachel Fagan, at a date to be determined. It was also with joy that both of these motions were approved by Session. CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS WITH YOUR CHURCH FAMILY

Please join your church family at the annual Christmas dinner on December 9th at 6:00 P.M. in the Fellowship Hall. Following the dinner, the Hill Church Instrumental Ensemble will lead us in singing Christmas carols. Look for more information and a reservation form in Church bulletins this month. Please reserve the date and plan to celebrate with us this holiday season (along with a special visitor!)

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIAS
Dont forget to order your Christmas poinsettia this year! Order forms will be available on the Deacons table in mid-November. The greenhouse requires our that our entire order to be placed by December 10th, so December 9th will be the last Sunday to turn in your order form. Poinsettias are still $8.00 each, and will be ordered from Gumto Greenhouses this year.

RECEIVING YOUR NEWSLETTER VIA EMAIL

Did you know that if the Church went to a mostly electronic format for the Church newsletter, we would save over $1000.00 per year in costs over $500.00 in postage, and $550 in paper, labels, ink and per copy costs. There is also this to consider: 1 carton (10 reams) of 100% virgin copier paper uses 60% of one tree 1 tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper or 8,333.3 sheets 1 ream (500 sheets) uses 6% of a tree (and those add up quickly!) The newsletter currently uses 4-5 reams of paper per month. Therefore, it uses 24-30% of one tree per month. Three to four trees per year could be saved no recycling needed! Another great benefit to receiving your newsletter electronically is that you always know where to find it! And if you wish, you can print out multiple copies, or just one page (such as the calendar or the volunteer schedule). If you have an email address, please consider receiving your newsletter this way. If for some reason you are having issues with your email, the Church newsletter is also posted on the Church website every month and is available from any computer. Even if you received your newsletter in the mail this month, please look at it on the website and consider if you prefer to read it in full color on your computer. If you do, send an email to: newsletter.hillup@zoominternet.net or call the office and request to receive it this way. An email request is best because it instantly provides the correct email address to the newsletter mailbox. ~Jennifer Gilliland, Office Secretary

You may help the work of the Lord and your Hill family of faith by staying current on the payment of your tithes and offerings. Our ministries, programs and mission commitments go on throughout the year regardless of the season.

FIRST FRUITS GIVING

By now, members of the Hill Church family of faith should have received our 2013 stewardship letter and pledge form. Our 2013 stewardship lesson comes from Proverbs 3:9 and reads: Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops. It is a lesson that challenges us to honor God by giving Him the best, the first fruits of our time, talent and treasure. As in past years our stewardship emphasis time started with leadership giving by members of the Session and Board of Deacons. Our church leaders pledged a total of $74,804.00 to support the ministries and programs of Hill Church for 2013. And as of October 30, additional pledges totaling $68,614.00 have been received from other members of our Hill Church family of faith, making our pledge total $143,418.00 for 2013. If you have not already done so, please prayerfully consider how you can support the work of Hill Church through the sharing of your time, talent and treasure. Once you have decided how to support the mission and ministries of Hill Church, please complete the pledge form that came with your stewardship message and return it in the envelope provided. You may return your pledge form by mailing it to the church office or placing it in the offering plate during worship. If you have misplaced your stewardship letter and pledge form please contact Jennifer at the church office and another one will be sent to you. During the next two months, the Session will continue our stewardship emphasis and prepare the 2013 Hill Church budget. We are hopeful that even in these tough economic times our family of faith will continue to share their time, cont... talent and treasure for the building and uplifting of Gods kingdom now and in the future. Thank you for honoring God with your support of the ministries and mission of Hill Church. Your generosity is deeply appreciated. The Stewardship and Mission Support Committee

HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF EFFORTS

As of this writing, the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy on the east coast is still being assessed, and the damage and death toll continues to rise. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance will be collecting offerings to help the victims of the storm. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance enables congregations and mission partners of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to witness to the healing love of Christ through caring for communities affected by crises and catastrophic events such as Hurricane Sandy. If you would like to make a special donation to help the efforts of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to aid those impacted by the storm, you can do so by writing PDA-Sandy in the memo section of your check, or on your offering envelope.

HARVEST HOME 2012

It is that time of year when the Deacons will be collecting food for the community for the Thanksgiving season. The food will be distributed through Covenant Cupboard in time for the November holiday. For three weeks food will be collected in the southeast corner of the sanctuary near the organ. The following are suggestions of food items by weeksthough it's not a strict guideline, just a suggestion. It is the Deacons hope that our congregation will continue to be generous in bringing in food items and/or money donations to support our Harvest Home Project, and as a result, benefit Covenant Cupboard. October 27-28: Canned and jarred foods; vegetables, fruits, soup, jelly, spaghetti sauce, tuna, salmon, peanut butter, beef stew, pumpkin. November 3-4: Boxed and bagged food; flour, sugar, mac and cheese, pancake mix, cereals, rice, cake mixes, pie mixes, crackers. November 10-11: Three-pound bags of apples and five pound bags of potatoes which require the least cold storage time. Other fresh vegetables and fruits cannot be collected due to the lack of cold storage areas.

HYC TO HOST LUNCHEON FOR THE BUTLER SYMPHONY HOUSE TOUR

The Hill Youth Chorale is once again hosting the luncheon for the Butler Symphony House Tour. It will be held on Saturday, November 17th at the Faith Presbyterian Church (on Route 8 just south of Clearview Mall). We are asking for your helpyou can help in a number of ways. Everyone likes homemade soup and we would appreciate your help with making the soup. On the Deacons table are recipes for stuffed pepper soup and broccoli cheese soup. Both recipes are pretty simple but very good. If you would like to make soup, please sign your name on the list in the overflow area and take the recipe for which ever one you would like to make. As before, we will be buying wedding soup and would appreciate a donation of $20.00 if you would rather do that than make soup. You can also help by taking the Butler Symphony House tour and/or coming to Faith Church for lunch that day between 11am-2pm. Will we have soup, salad, beverages, and, of course, amazing entertainment! All this for a donation of $5.00! So please come and ask your friends and family to join you! Thanks so much for your help. The young people will be working hard to make this a special event and we appreciate any help that you are able to give them!

GHANA MISSION TASK FORCE REPORT

We as the task force are truly grateful to the congregation members and friends who contributed to the scholarship fund for young Ghanaian women of the Bubiashie District churches. Individuals, as well as groups such as MOMs, the Womens Association, and Kids Club, contributed enough so that we could transmit nearly $6270 to the Bubiashie scholarship committee. Bernard Daddy, the chairperson, expressed heartfelt gratitude for our caring. A very special appreciation goes to Lyn Goehring, our church treasurer, for her diligence in transmitting these funds. There was a snafu with Western Union when it was discovered that their corporate rules had changed and we were not able to make the transmission as originally planned. Lyn then back tracked and went through PNC Bank and was able to close the deal with a smaller service fee and thus more money for scholarships. This scholarship project is ongoing, so please plan to keep our efforts in mind. Some folks found a very easy way to personally save money just by putting aside $1 per day. Others tossed coins in a jar at the end of the day and periodically counted them up and wrote a check for the scholarship fund. Bernard Daddy will be requesting that the scholarship awardees communicate so that we can learn about them. The Task Force will keep you informed. Christmas greetings will again be sent to the Bubiashie District. Be watching for the cards to be set out on the first three weekends in November. We invite each of you to join us in wishing our Ghanaian friends Christmas greetings. Please keep the Bubiashie District churches in your prayers. ~ Jim Ihlenfeld for the Ghana Mission Support Committee

ITS SHOEBOX TIME!

Our Church will once again be collecting filled shoeboxes for girls and boys for Operation Christmas Child. We will have more information in an upcoming Church bulletin insert about ideas for filling the shoeboxes with goodies for needy children, or you can visit the Operation Christmas child website at www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for ideas, boy and girl box labels, and an informative video. All shoe boxes need to be collected on or before November 18th to make sure that the children receive them in time for Christmas. If shopping and filling shoeboxes are not for you, we will also accept monetary donations.

HILL CHURCH FAMILY OF FAITH BIRTH ANNOUCEMENTS

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Evan Price on the birth of a son, Andrew Roberts, in midOctober. The family resides in Virginia. This being their fourth grandchild, Gwil and Kathy Price are very proud grandparents. Congratulations to Jeffrey and Megan Miller on the birth of their daughter Juliet Susanne at Magee Hospital on October 30, 2012 at 7:52am. Juliet weighed 5lb and 14oz at birth and was 19.5 inches long. Jeff and Megan currently reside in Connecticut, but will soon be moving to 117 Aubrey Drive in Butler. The proud grandparents are Kip and Anne Miller. May God continue to bless these families in every way possible!

LETTER TO INCLUDE IN YOUR OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX Christmas is about sharing the gift of God's Son, Jesus Christ, with the world. Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to poor children around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of Gods love. You can share Gods love with needy children in Honduras, Kosovo, or another country by participating with other members of our church. You can start by filling out and coloring the enclosed letter to put in the shoebox. Also consider if you want your shoebox to go to a boy or girl and what age group for which you would like to buy. Wrap the lid and the bottom of your shoebox in colorful Christmas paper, and look for a brochure in church or visit the website www.samaritanspurse.org/occ for gift ideas to fill your box. Don't forget to bring your shoe box gift to church on or before November 18th, 2012. What a perfect gift to give in honor of Jesus' birthday!
