(1). A conceit is a far-fetched and ingenious comparison. The metaphysical conceit is a
more intellectualized, many-leveled comparison, giving a strong sense of the poet's
ingenuity in overcoming obstacles. John Donne's conceits leap continually in a restless
orbit from the personal to the cosmic and back again. Please pick a metaphysical conceit
from Donne and comment on it.
(2). In 19th-century British literature, novels by different authors present the element
of realism, though perhaps in different ways. Use 3 novels as examples, each by one author,
and discuss how it may be meaningful, or may not be quite meaningful, for us to approach
them from the perspective of realism.
(3) In 19th century American novelists, Nathaniel Hawthorne stands out for his extraordinary
familiarity with the social and religious life of early New England society and for his
insights into the complexity of human nature. Please give two or more examples (with proper
analyses) from the novels or tales of Hawthorne in order to explain (1) the historical
imagination of Hawthorne; and (2) his mastery of psychological insight and understanding
of human nature.

2 What do you think of Bloomfields definition of word as a minimum free form?
3Why is the referential theory of meaning inadequate?
4A sad event was reported in late 2007, in which a pregnant woman and her baby died as her man
refused to sign on the letter of consent for a Caesarean operation. Public opinion blamed the mans

reveal in reporting the event? How should the event be re-examined?
5The following conversation occurred at a Chinese psychological counseling hotline, where clients call
