Pre-Algebra Lesson 16 Objectives

1. Solving inequalities 2. Graphing solutions to inequalities

Materials and Handouts 1. Have the number line cards cut out, folded in half and taped that way so that one side shows the number in white and the other side shows it in orange. 2.

Homework

5-10 Go over homework minutes 1. Grade their homework while they do the do now 2. Go over any questions they have. Do Now: Solve the following equations, then double check your answers by plugging them back in for the variable. 1. 2. 3. 4. Notes on Inequalities. 1. Exactly how many books do you have? 2. Exactly how many calories do you eat a day? 3. Exactly how long does it take you to get to school? 4. Why inequalities are necessary: In math we use the equals sign but in the real world, do we deal with things that are truly exactly equal? Normally we deal in ranges- it takes anywhere from 1 hour to 2 hours to get to school. You should eat more than 1,000 calories a day but fewer than 2500 calories a day. 5. Inequality symbols: Go over the four inequality symbols in order and have them write down the word meaning of each. a. is read as less than b. is read as less than or equal to c. is read as greater than d. is read as greater than or equal to. 6. A little practice using the symbols a. ___ 7 b. ___ c. ___ d. ___ e. ___ f. ___

7. Notice how up above, we never used the we introduce variables.

or the

symbols. They are used once

Activity on variables and inequalities. 1. First have them lay out the number line cards with all the white sides facing up. Make sure they recognize that all the integer cards should be equally spaced and they can put the decimals and fractions between two integers and a little below. 2. Now have them consider the following problems in order. Have them flip over any cards that when plugged in for make the inequality true. Look at the numberline and where its switched to orange. Mark this on the number-line provided and show them closed dot, open dot notation. a. b. c. d. e. f. 3. Once theyre done, summarize the following four points a. If it is less than and the sign looks like this then use an open circle and shade left. b. If it is greater than and the sign looks like this then use an open circle and shade Right c. If it is less than or equal to and the sign looks like this then use a filled circle and shade left. d. If it is greater than or equal to and the sign looks like this then use a filled circle and shade Right. Notes on Solving inequalities 1. Addition and Subtraction property of inequalities: Here is a true inequality: a. Add 5 to both sides of the inequality to get ___<___. Is the inequality still true? b. Subtract 6 from both sides of the inequality to get___<___. Is the inequality still true? c. Add to both sides of the inequality to get___<___. Is the inequality still true? 2. Multiplication and Division property of inequalities: a. Multiply both sides of the inequality by 3 to get___<___. Is the inequality still true? b. Divide both sides of the inequality by 2 to get___<___. Is the inequality still true? c. Multiply both sides of the inequality by -3 to get___<___. Is the inequality still true? d. Divide both sides of the inequality by -2 to get___<___. Is the inequality still true?

3. So the rules are: We can add and subtract anything we want from both sides. We

can multiply and divide both sides by any positive number. If we multiply or divide by a negative number, the sign flips. 4. Go through the examples with them.
