Keeping Up With The Times Since 1945 SUNY Oneontas Student Newspaper Volume 91. Issue 8. Nov. 7, 2012
The mens soccer team was able to pull off their second Sports Editor straight SUNYAC championship win this past weekend in Plattsburgh. The Red Dragons (13-5-1) started off the weekend with a 2-1 victory over New Paltz (11-8-1) Friday and then took the championship home Saturday after beating number one ranked Plattsburgh State (17-3-1), 2-1. SUCO fell behind against New Paltz in the 15th minute but was able to respond in the 30th minute behind a Luke Halberg goal, his seventh of the year. The game was level at the half and continued that way into the second period until Jake Suntherland scored on a header in the 55th minute to give Oneonta the 2-1 lead. The Red Dragons held off New Paltz the rest of the game and advanced to the SUNYAC finals against top ranked Plattsburgh. Earlier in the season, Oneonta lost to Plattsburgh 3-2 in double overtime but in the rematch were able to get revenge. SUCO and Plattsburgh played a tough match all game and it looked as if the game was destined for overtime again, until Luke Halberg was able to break the scoring drought in the 79th minute to give SUCO the lead. As the game neared its conclusion, Jake Suntherland scored a second goal in as many days to give SUCO a 2-0 lead in the 88th minute. It looked as if Oneonta was going to walk away with an easy win but less than 30 seconds after SUCO went up 2-0, Plattsburgh came back and scored behind a Steve Zacharczyk goal, to cut the lead to 2-1. Fortunately for the Red Dragons, Plattsburghs comeback was just too little too late as the horn sound giving SUCO its second straight SUNYAC championship and a return trip to the NCAA championship. Last season, Oneonta advanced all the way to the Final Four in San Antonio, before their magical run was ended by tournament runner ups Calvin, 4-2. Much like last year, the Red Dragons hope to replicate their amazing run again and advance to the Final Four once more and this year, hopefully win it all. They start the tournament this Saturday at home against MIT (13-4-2) and if they win and advance to the second round will play either Montclair St. (17-2) or Salve Regina (16-5-1) Sunday.

makes it a requirement of her students to organize an event of their choosing, but the organization of the Autumn Connection was a unique effort. Rather than deciding to work on different events, the students in the two sections of the class decided to make it a group effort, combining the help from everyone enrolled for the course. After some deliberation, they decided that the best thing to do would be to organize an event downtown, going into the community so best to draw local interest.
Samantha Smith, a junior enrolled in Public Relations and participant in the organization of Autumn Connection, described their motivation for the event. Its kind of a hot issue right now that the community members dont really like us college students [for our drunk and disorderly behavior] on the way to the bars, and loudness and littering... We decided to hold this to improve relations with them. Set up towards the entrance was a table where students were invited to sign a pledge mounted on poster-board stating, I pledge to respect the community members, my neighbors and their property. To use lower voices during the night, and to not scream out profanities [sic]. I know that I am part of a greater community and I pledge to do my best to abide by the laws and to respect those around me. Several activities were set up for attendees to take part in: face-painting, crafts for children as well as card-making for patients of St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital. Charitable donations
Students and local residents stand together for a group shot, holding up the poster-board pledge made by students to better respect the community. Issue 8 T h e S t a t e T i m e s

Dont be original, be good. In an interview with Thomas, Manik spoke of his career and his influences. Having always had an interest in music production, his favorite genres include electronic and synth-pop, citing heavyweight producers Pharell Williams and Quincy Jones as influences, along with bands The Prodigy, the xx and M83. The alumni chosen for the award are given the opportunity to connect with
current music performance and industry students, to encourage them to offer guidance and focus when considering possible career paths. Prof. Colby Thomas, who specializes in voice, said Its the music departments wish to cultivate a longlasting network of alumni with presentday students. The Hall of Fame event is evolving into an important and satisfying part of that plan.

should write their name to sign off on an email? Were not mailing letters to our pen pals; your name is contained in the message label! Ill admit, I do this because it feels more professional, but in email interaction, I see both behaviors; shouldnt signing off have become moot from the time of emails inception? Many view Facebook as overwhelmingly trivial, or see the social media age as an era that allows individuals to find excess importance in each detail of their lives. Its not hard to imagine the more unwelcome aspects when your news feed can at times be full of personal drama that holds no relevance to you. I do see this side, but I see what I feel to be obvious positive effects as well: being able to remain connected with old friends you may not see regularly, staying in touch with family that may live across the country and an encouragement to share with your social community your thoughts, ideas and experiences, ultimately bringing everyone closer through technological connection. Do we turn to Facebook when we feel a dearth of face-to-face communication in our everyday lives? Does it fill that void? Or do likes mean nothing to us? We cant pretend like its completely trivial. Have you ever looked at a friend like theyre an alien if theyve told you that they dont have a Facebook? Have we succeeded at reducing socialization to a series of 0s and 1s? And even yet, what does the future of technology have in store? Imagine the old days, sitting at the radio and hearing the host say for those of you listening at home... and now, were here. It all feels a bit like The Twilight Zone to me.

Last week I wrote about the various thefts that have been occurring around campus, specifically the Alumni Field House and Chase PE. After a lengthy investigation, a suspect was arrested on Friday, November 2, 2012 in connection with several of the thefts from the Field House. A search warrant was executed on his residence and numerous stolen items were recovered. Although one suspect has been arrested, please continue to be cautious about leaving any valuables in an unsecured locker or anywhere unattended. These are crimes of opportunity and if you do not present the opportunity to someone then hopefully you will not become a victim! I also wanted to update you on other arrests that UPD has recently made regarding use of another persons student ID to purchase items. Several arrests have been made from unauthorized purchases from Shop 24 and other vending machines on campus. When someone takes a student ID card from another, they can be charged with a felony because that card is considered a Issue 8 debit/credit card. The student ID cards have a declining balance of money, therefore making it qualify as a felony charge. One may not realize the full consequences of this action until it is too late and they have a felony arrest on their record for possibly something as minor as buying a candy bar from a vending machine. On a different note, I wanted to advise everyone of a new tool UPD is using to disseminate information to the Campus Community. UPD has now joined Facebook! Please search the words NYS University Police at Oneonta and you should be able to find our page. We hope to use this page as another way of getting information out to the community. Examples of this may be for cancellations, weather emergencies, parking regulation changes, or to inform you of events or activities going on. Please find our page and like it so you can receive these updates when they are given. Pass the word along so as many people will be kept informed as possible. If you have any suggestions for our page, and how it can be used, please let us know! T h e S t a t e T i m e s

Clinic. Because of the gluten-free trend, as well as the increase in diagnoses of Celiacs disease, there is becoming an abundance of gluten-free products such as bread, bagels, cereals, crackers, cakes, waffles and more. For those who have a gluten intolerance or sensitivity, this is good news. However, the news is not as good for people who are following a gluten-free diet for weight loss. Because gluten provides flavor to the foods in which it is naturally found, removing the gluten also removes the signature taste that many people love in bread products. In order to add more flavor back, some gluten-free foods are higher in fat, sodium and calories; they can also be more expensive. Not everyone who has a gluten sensitivity has Celiacs disease, so if you think that reducing or eliminating gluten in your diet will help your body feel better, going gluten-free may be something that you should consider. However, if you are reducing or eliminating gluten simply to get healthier or lose weight, you may want to reconsider your approach. Symptoms of Celiacs disease include diarrhea, abdominal pain and gas. Because it is an autoimmune disease, there can be other symptoms such as skin rashes, headaches, fatigue and joint pain. This past weekend the Student Association attended the SUNY Student Assembly Fall Conference in East Syracuse. The conference consists of a business meeting for voting delegates and workshops for non-voting delegates. President Jimmy Johnston and Director of External Affairs John Myron represented our school as voting delegates, with Executive Vice President Jillian Vell, Director of College Operations Liz White and Senator Yasmin Da Silva serving as non-voting delegates. Within the business meeting, President Johnston and Director Myron passed several bylaw edits, new election procedures, a resolution regarding absences for those volunteering with political campaigns, the SUNY Legislative Agenda and a resolution written by our own Student Association in regards to raising the cap on the Student Activity Fee. The non-voting delegates completed workshops to obtain
the SUNY Student Leadership Institute certificate. These workshops focused on activities for professional and personal development including: diversity, dining etiquette, customer service, organizing clubs, stress and time management. We would also like to congratulate Alex Lyakhov on receiving the SUNY Emerging Leadership award, which was given to 17 students SUNY wide. Congratulations Alex! We spoke to many other schools and gained a lot of insight on issues they are experiencing, and realized how fortunate we are to not be facing many of those same problems. If you have any questions feel free to stop by the SA office to talk to us!

Small Markets vs. Big Markets: Do They Actually Exist in the NBA?
James Harden is the NBAs reigning Anthony Beers sixth man of the year. Last season he was vital to the Oklahoma City ThunStaff Writer ders success on their road to the NBA finals. As a member of the Thunder, Harden averaged 16.8 points, 3.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds off the bench. These stats dont even begin to explain the contribution Harden had to the Thunder every night. He was also a key asset to the Thunder during their shocking upset over the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. The most alarming fact that NBA fans forget is that James Harden is only 23 years old still. That may be due to the pure ferocity of his beard, but nonetheless, a sixth man award at that young of an age means only one thing: a rising star. The Thunder are loaded with young talent, particularly in point guard Russell Westbrook and small forward superstar Kevin Durant. Last week Harden was traded to the Houston Rockets for guards Jeremy Lamb and Kevin Martin and they also acquired two first round picks and a second round pick. Thats a total of five players, but the trade came as a shock to the NBA because Harden is a rising star in the league. The Thunder decided to trade Harden right before the season began because of his contract situation. They had the option to either resign Harden before the season started, or allow him to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Rather than deal with the politics, the Thunder went with the trade. This had nothing to do with Hardens commitment to the Thunder or his capabilities as a player. They traded him entirely because of their limitations as a market in the NBA. Its a controversial subject and most people believe it is extremely difficult to rebuild a team in the NBA. In fact, people believe that this is an unfair thing, a small market team unable to perform against the big market teams that constantly dominate and can rebuild their franchise overnight. Big market teams are stealing super stars from the smaller teams that simply cannot match them. The truth is thats all garbage, being a small market team is often a choice from the franchise, not necessarily a limitation. The Thunder had a ridiculous crowd at every one of their games last year. In fact they were known for being one of the loudest most hostile places to play, with extremely dedicated fans. Its actually quite simple; a small market team means big

profit. It has much more to do with the business; this is not a geographical tragedy. If fans dont agree, remember the Seattle Supersonics were in the 14th largest television market and owner Clay Bennet and NBA Commissioner David Stern were in full support of bringing the franchise to Oklahoma City, the 45th largest television market in the country. The Thunder said peace to Harden and as a result saved millions. Theyll be able to pay Durant and Westbrook in the future and it wont hurt their payroll as significantly had they signed all three of these young stars. Financially it helps the Thunder and the NBA. Unfortunately its the players and fans that suffer from this business model of balancing the league with large and small markets to maximize revenue for the league. In some cases NBA fans will blame players like James Harden for taking more money rather than sticking with their team. Harden rightfully played with a chip on his shoulder in his debut as a Houston Rocket. Harden had 37 points, 6 rebounds and 12 assists in the Rockets win over the Detroit Pistons. The Thunder image courtesy of bleacherreport.com had offered Harden roughly a 4-year, 60-million-dollar contract, which is much less than Durant and Westbrook got. The Rockets, after the trade, signed him to a max deal for about 5-years, 80-million. From a business standpoint, Harden simply maximized his best option in a very narrow opportunity. Of course he will be the one that gets criticized for not sticking with the Thunder when they very well could have offered him the same exact deal. Professional sports writer Dave Zirin wrote in his weekly blog, I have never understood how sports writers can turn so much bile on players for trying to maximize their incredibly narrow earning windows while owners, who have inheritedor in Bennetts case, married generational wealth, are exempt from the same criticisms. Last years Stern engineered lockout, it should now be clear, wasnt about small-market competitive balance, but extracting wealth from the players and redistributing it into the bank accounts of ownership. Fans may believe that the NBA is advantageous to larger markets, but obviously that is not always the case. The New York Knicks are one of the biggest markets in the world and havent done a thing since the 1999-2000 season. James Harden simply took his best opportunity, and NBA fans should wish him the best of luck as a Rocket.

His uniquely introspective style of rapping is supported beautifully by Dr. Dres production. None of these songs sound like anything heard on the radio today. Every song (and the album as a whole) is permeated by a constant mellow, relaxed vibe. This album could easily be heard in a hole-in-the-wall coffee shop as on the Billboard Hot 100. Listeners are treated to a wide breadth of instrumentation, with iridescent guitar riffs and lilting bass lines being commonplace. Drums are reserved and serve to propel the rhythm, not to be the main attraction, as in your average hit rap track. Going above and beyond with creativity, many songs also feature soothing female vocals as a foil to Lamars sharp raps. Sing About Me features a beautiful piano melody, and several songs are accompanied by classical strings as well. The standout track of the album is its single Swimming Pools (Drank). It starts with an effects-laden call and response that replays the ebb and flow of a typical night out drinking, while Lamar eases into the track with his thoughtful lyrics. What on the surface may seem like another image courtesy of ebony.com theme song to getting fucked up on a Friday night, Swimming Pools is actually Lamars prose on the dangers of drinking and the fallacy of using alcohol to mask insecurities and real problems. The chorus sarcastically asks Why you babysitting only two or three shots? Im a show you how to turn it up a notch. First you get a swimming pool full of liquor, then you dive in it, pool full of liquor, then you dive in it. Lamar himself has said that he does not drink anymore, and I am sure that his decision affords him this type of on-point critical observation. Lamar has created a one of a kind album that cannot be fully appreciated on the first listen. It is not an album to only download the single to and leave the rest in the dust. Every track ties together deliberately, and the different pieces of the puzzle unlock a memorable listening experience when appreciated as a whole. For anyone up for the challenge there is a great reward waiting for them. Lamars star is just starting to shine, and he deserves it.
ewcomer Kendrick Lamars debut album good kid, m.A.A.d city is an impressive work of art that pairs superior rapping ability with masterful storytelling, resulting in the best hip-hop album of the year. Lamar is not your everyday rap artist. Growing up in Compton, California, he follows in the footsteps of hip-hop legends Tupac and Dr. Dre, both of whom also came from Compton. Lamars respect and adoration for Dr. Dre has come full circle; Dre produced the album for Lamar, with help from other in-demand producers such as Pharrell and Just Blaze. Lamar was able to witness the gang crime and poor conditions of life in Compton without getting lost in it. Many of his lyrics deal with issues more serious than most rappers speak about, referencing problems such as alcoholism, gang violence and prostitution. good kid, m.A.A.d city is not an album to bump in the clubs and get your drink on to; it is an album to explore and really appreciate. Lamars elusive lyrics and surgeonlike precision on the beat is a welcome phenomenon. He is an extremely talented rapper, showcasing his chops with a bevy of sixteenth note phrases, multisyllabic words and internal rhymes. good kid is a concept album, a rarity for hip-hop, and follows the story of a young man on an average Compton day, drinking and smoking with his friends and getting into trouble. It is accepted in todays culture for hip-hop icons to rap about this kind of behavior in a positive light, but Lamar does not do this. Similarly to Nas thought-provoking musings, Lamar does not boast about these things, he simply draws attention to them and what lessons can be learned as a result. It is reassuring to see an album that is so intelligently crafted be accepted, even embraced, in the mainstream. Kendrick Lamar is anything but a household nameyet. However, his debut sold 242,000 copies in its first week, giving him the highest first week sales of any hip-hop artist this year, even of any male artist. For a newcomer like Lamar, this level of chart success is remarkable and shows that his work will not be leaving the conscious of music enthusiasts any time soon; Kendrick Lamar has arrived.
Just Give Me a Reason, a duet with fun.s Nate Ruess, is a conversation between a woman who feels her love is waning and a man who assures her that its all in her head. Elsewhere, the ballad Beam Me Up deals with the loss of a child. Co-written by the same man who had a hand in past songs such as the similarly profound Crystal Ball and unforgettable single Stupid Girls, this track provides a great break from the heavily-pop first half. Pink also further experiments with rock in songs like the powerful, 99 percent-inspired opener and the clever How Come Youre Not Here. But its Slut Like You where this rock-pop hybrid works best. Described as her admittedly dirty form of feminism, this track explodes with contagious energy, raunchy lyrics and a fun bridge that only she could pull off. Yet, with all this proof that Pink is actually growing continued on page 10 T i m e s Pg. 9

ists already out there. Entering the next track, there is a really nice change of pace. Titled Wrecked, it could do without the repeating voice talking about his swag, but there are some nice and filthy sounds happening. Everything seems to meld nicely, even the swagger mans vocal part. The only downside to this one is that the drop is very copy and pasted where it seems like the group just copied the beginning and edited into itself. As a result, the track is not very dynamic and after the first two minutes, the song is essentially on repeat. Ill F*** It ends the EP by throwing in a new sound completely out of nowhere. The electronic beat and drops are mashed together with heavy guitar riffs. This song has an obvious influence by J Devil, which is further proven by him inserting a sample from the Korn song Twist. There arent any nice or pretty sounds here, just heavy guitar and electronic wails. Between the sample interplay, the addition of guitars and the nice delayed drop, this is definitively the stand out track with a lasting impression. The pros and cons of this album come from this new team trying to find their sound. Alone, these artists have different sounds that outshine the EP in comparison. The experimentation with rhythm and drops made for a very educational listen, but should not be ones entrance into the world of hard electronic music. If the other songs are like the last two, they should be fine. However, if they somehow mix each others incredible individual efforts, this group will definitely be something to look forward to. As for right now, give it a listen and wait for the feature album before jumping to too many conclusions.
f all the nuances in our emotional makeups, music always manages, with ease, to match whatever feeling we might throw at it. Whether its an instrumental melody that seems to speak our minds or the perfect lyrical/musical pairing, theres no emotion that the right music cant capture. After examining the albums I dwell on most when experiencing certain feelings, Ive selected five albums that I feel are the best partners to the five following moods: Productive: Girl Talk All Day The work of Girl Talk, or Gregg Gillis, is designed to get people on their feet. Its guaranteed to throw you into a good mood, but also has the power to push you into galactic overdrive. Even the title of this album suggests it! Whether youre heading to the gym or banging out a term paper, All Day is the album to keep you running. Highlights: Oh No, Jump on Stage, This Is the Remix

Anxious: Frederic Chopin The Nocturnes This choice is more of a treatment than a source of emotional amplification. If youre feeling nervous or anxious about something, Chopins nocturnes will calm you down. Theyre about as good for anxiety as pancakes are for breakfast or knit beanies are for keeping you warm in the winter. Some of the most widespread recordings were done by Claudio Arrau, a Chilean pianist who recorded the complete nocturnes from 1977 through 1978. image courtesy of Highlights: Nocturne No. 2 in E-flat major, Nocturne No. 10 in A-flat major

Its chill. Highlights: Black Market, Cannon Ball, Herandnu Charged: The Black Keys El Camino Up and at em! The Black Keys are the appropriate soundtrack to kickin ass and takin names. Highlights: Gold on the Ceiling, Stop Stop Runners Up: The Shins Port of Morrow (curious), Fleet Foxes Helplessness Blues (contemplative), The Beta Bands The Three EPs (mellow), Frank Zappas Waka/Jawaka (peculiar), Eminems Relapse (aggressive) Its good to keep a select set of albums handy that you know to reach for when you feel a certain way. ounce Red Bull there are 80 mg of caffeine, whereas a cup of coffee trails slightly behind, depending on the strength of the brew; coffee can range from 102-200 mg of caffeine. Ironically, one of the drinks highest in caffeine happens to be the smallest in size. A 5-hour Energy bottle containing only 1.93 ounces of liquid has 207 mg of caffeine. Although this may sound surprising, caffeine is considered a drug, specifically in the category of a stimulant, and is the most widely consumed in the world. On average, 80 percent of Americans consume caffeine, in the form of coffee or tea, daily. When caffeine is ingested at a normal dosage (under 250 mg a day), the consumer will experience heightened alertness, lessening of fatigue, and stimulation of the brain. On the opposite end of the spectrum, when caffeine is used at an unhealthily high level, one may experience restlessness, nervousness, insomnia, tremors and even toxicity (which can cause death). Large amounts of caffeine can cause problems because it targets the central nervous system directly and can lead to severe dehydration. The combination of these two effects can cause agitation and sleep problems, as well as long-term effects such as the development of anxiety issues. If these beverages are consumed in moderation, they can be a useful tool, or a boost to get through a long day. However, if they are not, it can be a serious risk to the individual and their health. Caffeine is often relied on especially around campus by college students when trying to get through a long day of classes, a night of studying, or a research paper. What needs to be remembered is no matter how much of a boost you need, there is such a thing as too much caffeine.

Forget Your Most Unwanted Memories
Do you have any memories that you just want to forget? A new study has shown that the brain has two different ways of handling those unwanted memories. Researchers say there are ways to avoid thinking of unpleasant or unhappy memories; you can either just block out the memory or simply substitute it with another one. Roland Benoit, a cognitive neuroscientist at the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, England, used the example of having a fight with a loved one. He stated, You dont want to think about it because you want to just go on with life. You can somehow push it out, or you could try to think of something else, like maybe that nice vacation to France you had together. To prove this study, Dr. Benoit and Michael Anderson asked 36 adults to partake in a memory activity. In the first group, participants were told to associate the words beach and Africa. A different group was asked to not think about the associated words at all. The third group was told to associate the words snorkel and beach, instead of Africa. The participants were then put under a functional M.R.I. scanner. The results showed that while both suppression and substitution cause forgetting, a different region of the brain controls each one. With memory substitution, the caudal prefrontal cortex and midventrolateral prefrontal cortex create a network that works with the hippocampus to switch out the new information with details people would soon forget. However, when an unwanted memory is suppressed, the dorsal prefrontal cortex actually hinders

equality and a French concept called laicitethe complete absence of religion in governmental affairs. This means political discourse in France must be entirely free of religious rhetoric. Instead of throwing out the same old cliches that most protestors would, such as God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve and One man one woman, the protestors of France believe that same-sex marriage leads to ridiculed lives and harassment of the children sprung from these families. In a sense, anti-gay protesters in the U.S. have the advantage of using their religion as a supposed unquestionable justification for their intolerant philosophy. The protesters in France do not have this luxury as they are forced to adopt a facade of secularism. So from a sociological standpoint, the world can only gain tolerance by influencing individuals to be more accepting. When looking at the concept of same-sex marriage we have to think somewhat liberally; would you have a child grow up with no parents or in a foster home rather than be with samesex partners who will love the child unconditionally?
