Introduction and disclaimer

This list attempts to give a guide to the current diesel locomotive fleet of Indian Railways. It does not include
locomotives in use with private sector operators such as power stations, steel works, quarries etc. Classes that
have been entirely withdrawn have also been omitted. Given the size of the fleet and lack of hard information,
this will only ever be a (very) rough guide. Anything highlighted in yellow requires confirmation.

General codes
A = Dual train brakes. Some locomotives have this letter omitted, instead having the word DUAL stencilled,
typically on the cab sides. Some have been observed with both.
B = Air brakes only (WDM2)
R = rebuilt by DCW. The letter R can be found after the number on the body-sides and buffer beams.
C = rebuilt by DCW to 2C standards. Such rebuilds are quite separate from the new 14000 series WDM2Cs
currently in production at DLW.. The letter R can be found after the number on the body-sides and a WDM 2C
class code on the buffer beams.
S = restricted to shunting/departmental use only (WDM2).
* = Noted in service since November 2000. A special note for WDM2s built by Alco.
b = equipped with special automatic train overspeed/braking system for working the Briganza Ghat between
Kulem and Castle Rock. A yellow notice is displayed on the cab sides. Used by locos from Gooty (GY) shed.
f = rebuilt cab, full width/flat front of various designs. A note on rebuilds; occasionally IR rebuilds collisiondamaged locos with differing styles of short hood and cab. These rebuilds are sometimes undertaken at
regional sheds and workshops such as Golden Rock, Trichy.
k = on loan to KTM (Malaysia)
j = low, full width short hood, two large windows. Nicknamed Jumbos. As per a directive, all Jumbos will be
converted to a normal short hood when they reach the rebuild stage. Some have been rebuilt and retained their
original cab design.
w = withdrawn
s = scrapped
Little is known as to the status of withdrawn locomotives. The only such observations in this list are limited to a
handful of locos seen at Pune shed during November 2001.

First letter denotes the gauge:

Second letter denotes the type of traction: (D)iesel
Third letter denotes the intended usage:

The suffix numbers and letters indicate sub-classes and variants. A memo from the Executive Director
Mechanical Engineering (Traction), Railway Board dated 14/03/02, advised of a revised diesel locomotive
classification system. The letters remained unchanged but the suffix numbers/letters were given new meaning.
The first digit after M. P, or G indicates the horsepower range; 3 for 3000hp and 4 for 4000hp. The letter after
this digit will indicate additional horsepower above 3000 or 4000. For example:
A = additional 100hp
C = additional 300hp
F = additional 600hp
As an example, the WDM2Cs (rebuilt from standard WDM2s) will become WDM3As. The classification of
existing WDM2Cs, WDP2s and WDG2s is to be changed. However, there will be no change in the
nomenclature of WDM2s and WDP1s (no mention was made of any other classes). The target date for
completing the changeover is 30.6.2002

Notes: DCW, located in Patiala, Punjab has been rebuilding WDM2s that are 18-21 years old and due for their
3rd periodic overhaul (POH). Such locos are given an R suffix to their running number. DCW has also been
rebuilding some engines and at the same time upgrading them to WDM2Cs. They have a different engine block,
larger ABB turbocharger and different expressor with a sophisticated air dryer. These locos have a Woodward
governor and idle more evenly. They have reduced emissions during acceleration; the Woodward governor
accelerates the engine slowly thus preventing the turbo from lagging in the supply of air.
The WDM2C rebuilds look like regular WDM2s (rather than the 14000 series WDM2Cs) except for a bulge in one
of the hood doors. See http://uk.photos.yahoo.com/zubindotivala for an example. The bulge hides a centrifugal
fuel filter, which was displaced by larger aftercoolers required by the GE turbocharger. Apparently there was no
other place to mount it so the door is curved around the cylindrical item. There are some differences in the roof
line and the exhaust stack is different (flatter and broader) because of the GE turbo.
WDM2s have a bronze shell lined with babbit metal as suspension bearings for the traction motors. Thay are oillubricated through wicks by capillary action. Failure of suspension bearings has been the bugbear and DCW
replaces the original design with roller-bearing suspension. The conventional 4906-BZ traction motor has a plain
suspension bearing. This tube is used to suspend the traction motor and this plain bearing is located in the
'suspension tube'. The motor moves slightly around this tube as the wheel sets move in their suspensions. The
DCW reworks these older motors to new type 4907-AZ motor has roller bearings with the inherent advantages.
During the conversion, the new coils and pole pieces are also installed.
The sandboxes are also relocated from the body to the bogies.
The cost of the rebuild is about 1.5 crores (215,000) per locomotive.

Notes:
These locomotives were designed to replace the steam locomotives being phased out from broad gauge branch
line service. They are powered by a single 251B 12-cylinder diesel engine, developing 1977 CV at 1000 rpm
under standard conditions (20C at sea level). All locomotives have electric transmission. The first ten are
equipped with a shunt wound, separately excited, self-ventilated 10-pole generator. This is a BHEL type TG
10931 AZ. The last five locomotives have a 3-phase, star-connected, separately excited, self-ventilated, 10-pole
alternator of BHEL type TA 10105 AZ. All machines have six axle-hung, nose-suspended, series-wound, forceventilated 4-pole traction motors of BHEL type 4501 AZ. They share the same 94:17 gear ratio but the first
batch have a top speed of 105 kmh, whilst the latter five are rated at 100 kmh. The eleventh locomotive and
onwards are provided with dynamic brakes.
The under frame is an all welded construction comprising of two box section main beams with integral fuel tank
at the centre, with suitable transverse braces and stretchers at load points. The underframe is capable of
withstanding a buffing load of 400t. The locomotive is equipped with two 3-axle bogies of Trimount type fully
equalised and fitted with individual traction motors on all axles (see above). The bogie rotates on a swivel
bearing mounted on a single piece cast steel bogie frame. There are two load-bearing pads, one on each side
of the cross member of the frame; the three thus form a 3-point support to carry the load on each bogie. The
first carries 60% of the vertical load and also transmits and receives the traction and braking forces. The two
side bearers equally share the remaining 40% of the vertical load. The suspension is in four groups of springs,
each group consisting of two outer and two inner coils. One inner coil in each group of springs works in
conjunction with a friction snubber.

Fabricated rigid design under frame with two-stage suspension. High traction, high speed 3 axle (HTSC) cast
truck frame giving high adhesion performance (43%) through Super Series wheel slip control system. Starting
tractive effort 540kN can start a load of 4750t (58 BOXN wagons) on 1-in-150 gradiant with a balancing speed
of 85 kmh as compared to 69 for WDG-2 locos with 58 Box 'N' load on level track.
Microprocessor controlled with fault display and complete self diagnostics which can be downloaded to a lap-top
computer. Computer controlled brake system (KNORR-NYAB-CCB), motor driven cooling fans and dust
bin/inverter blowers, above 90% traffic availability.
Multiple operation allows up to 4 locomotives.
18-20% fuel saving over WDM-2, Lube to fuel oil ratio 0.5 as compared to 1.5 for Alco. 90 day trip schedule as
compared to 7-10 days for Alco. Loco POH after 16 years, engine overhaul six years. Higher safety with 270 kN
braking effort and dynamic brakes effective to near zero kmph. Self load arrangement for a full engine test
without external load box. AC traction motor doubles traction motor life.
21t axle load, 126 t loco wt, 52t max tractive effort. 90:17 gear ratio, 43" wheel dia, electronic air brake system,
locomotive control EM-2000 with SIBAS-16 traction control unit, Gardner Denver air compressor, water cooled,
6000 liters fuel tank cap, 21.3 m over all length.
The first loco built by DLW finished end of March/beginning of April 2002. Loco has 55% of parts manufactured
in India.
