Course Description and Goals: The Chinese Mandarin IV Honors is designed to provide you with a firm understanding of issues of morality and ethics with regard to the Chinese culture and society of today. As this course is designed to improve your oral communication skills in Mandarin Chinese, it will rely heavily on interactive group activities, individual and group presentations, as well as a final group project (presented in both an oral and written format). This class will be taught entirely in Mandarin Chinese and will include a strong student-centered approach. Topics to be discussed include: Family Planning, Piracy, Modernization, Food Safety, and Minority Culture. Upon completion of this course, you will not only have a firm grasp of the moral and ethical issues facing the Chinese world, you will also possess an increased oral proficiency so as to discuss you opinion on these topics and others. Assignments: Weekly Written Reactions to Discussions: You will be required to submit weekly journallike reflections about the topics of the week and the discussions. In each of the submissions you will be required to use the vocabulary reviewed that week. Quizes: There will be vocabulary quizes every Monday which covers the material learned the previous week. Group Presentations: After each 3-week unit, students are required to have prepared a group presentation which covers some aspect of the unit. Final Project: Each student will be required to prepare an individual project which covers some aspect of the test. The final project will be presented in two parts - an oral and a written format. Performative Goals -Students will read authentic content from the Internet (newspaper, blogs, websites) to gain vocabulary and content knowledge that will allow them to communicate at a higher levels of conversation. -Students will handwrite weekly responses to readings and video clips to expand their own vocabulary -Students will write compositions that are both personal and critical in nature -Students will listen to segments of video clips (online: Youtube, Youku) having to do with high level vocabulary and abstract, moral issues. -Students will talk in extensive detail about abstract morality/ethical concepts B. Cognitive Goals -Students will appreciate the basic concepts of ethical behavior in Chinese society as communicated through multiple literature and media sources. -Students will appreciate the Chinese perspective about various topics including food safety, piracy, ethnic tensions, family planning and modernization and how these events relate to ethics and morality -Students will understand how to interact with Chinese people when discussing these current events -Students will understand the importance of discussing these topics in a culturally sensitive manner C. Metacognitive Goals -Students will be aware of the cultural differences between how Americans and Chinese view issues of morality and ethics in the 21st century -Students will appreciate why their peers and family members from China think the way they do about certain topics concerning morality and ethics D. Communication Goals -Students will engage in discussions using abstract vocabularies RE ethics and morality -Students will know how to express personal opinions using these abstract vocabularies -Students will be able to support their own ideas concerning the topics of morality and ethics in both oral and written mediums
