Voters uphold law
in euphoric night
for supporters

BALTIMORE Maryland voters on
Tuesday approved the states same-sex
marriage law in a night of historic rsts for
LGBT Americans.
With 97 percent of precincts reporting,
Question 6 passed by a 52-48 percent margin.
Fairness and equality under the law
won tonight, said Josh Levin, campaign
manager for Marylanders for Marriage
Equality, in a statement shortly after his
group announced voters had upheld the
law. Were sure to feel the ripples of this
monumental victory across the country for
years to come.
Gov. Martin OMalley, who signed the
states same-sex marriage law in March,
joined lesbian state Dels. Heather Mizeur
(D-Montgomery County) and Mary
Washington (D-Baltimore City) and other
elected ofcials on stage at the Baltimore
Soundstage.
Thank you for what you have done
in this noble battle to move Maryland
forward, said OMalley.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-
Blake echoed the governor.
There are very few times when there
are no words to describe how grateful
I am, she said hours after she joined
OMalley and Brendon Ayanbadejo of the
Baltimore Ravens at a local polling place.
I am so grateful for Maryland standing up
for fairness, for standing up for equality.
Gay state Sen. Rich Madaleno
(D-Montgomery County) told Question
6 supporters they are standing here
as equal citizens of the United States.
He also had a proposal of sorts for his
husband.
I have one last thing to say, said
Madaleno. Hopefully somewhere in
Kensington, Mark Hodge is watching this
broadcast. And honey I say will you marry
me again?
Question 6 opponents maintained the
same-sex marriage law did not protect
religious freedom in spite of what OMalley
and other supporters repeatedly claimed.
Some even resorted to using increasingly
homophobic language that included
equating gay men to predators who
want to indoctrinate children and noting
Superstorm Sandy struck New York City after
Mayor Michael Bloomberg donated $250,000
to Marylanders for Marriage Equality during
the nal days of the campaign.
The Maryland Marriage Alliance, which
opposed the same-sex marriage law, did not
immediately respond to Question 6s passage.
This is a historic night, state Del.
Keiffer Mitchell (D-Baltimore City) told the
Washington Blade as the results began
to come in. When I was talking to voters
out there, they were comfortable with the
religious protections involved and they
started to see it more as an equality issue.
Baltimore resident Monica Jones
pointed to two people with whom she
works in the citys school system who
cannot currently add their same-sex
partners to their health insurance plans.
She told the Blade that Question 6 would
allow them to do that.
I feel like why not give it to them, said
Jones, who sang a song in support of the
same-sex marriage law while awaiting the
results. Theyre family. Theyre no different
than what we are no different at all.
Congressman Elijah Cummings early on
Tuesday said he was optimistic Maryland
voters would support the law, but predicted
the margin of victory would be slim.
I think its going to pass, he told
the Washington Blade in an interview
outside Northwood Elementary School in
Baltimore.
Cummings, who represents parts of Charm
City and Baltimore and Howard Counties,
told the Blade last month he was going to
vote for Question 6. He was the last member
of the Maryland Democratic congressional
delegation to publicly back the law.
We have come a long way on that issue,
he said. Im the son of two Pentecostal
ministers. In my home, women putting on
make-up was considered a sin. Thats the
kind of house I grew up in. And so you can
imagine some issues are very, very difcult.
Gay Delaware candidates lose bids for ofce
Gay Democrats Andy Staton and Marie Mayor lost their bids to become the
rst openly gay candidates elected to the Delaware Legislature on Tuesday in
districts where large numbers of LGBT people live.
Staton, a real estate agent in the popular gay beach resort town of Rehoboth
Beach, ran for a seat in the Delaware Senate in a newly created district that included
Rehoboth Beach and the nearby towns of Lewes, Dewey Beach and Milton.
Supporters believed Staton had a good chance of winning in the majority
Democratic district, which was viewed as being more progressive-leaning than
surrounding parts of Republican dominated Sussex County.
Final but unofcial returns from the Delaware Board of Elections show Staton
received 42.7 percent of the vote compared to Republican challenger Ernesto
Lopez, who received 56.1 percent. Libertarian candidate Gwendolyn Jones
received 1.2 percent.
In a nearby district, lesbian businesswoman Marie Mayor was believed to have
a shot at winning a seat in the Delaware House of Representatives in a district in
Milton. Mayor received 46.8 percent of the vote, losing to Republican Stephen
Smyk, who received 53.2 percent.
When asked why Staton and Mayor fell short of predictions by some that they
were poised to win their races, gay Democratic activist Peter Schott, an ofcial
with Stonewall Democrats of Delaware, said: Its very simple. The whole county
has become increasingly more Republican.
Staton, who couldnt immediately be reached for comment, told the Blade last
week that he was optimistic about his prospects for winning.
People are responding overwhelmingly, he said, referring to his campaigns
TV ads.
Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, state Attorney General Beau Biden, U.S. Sens.
Chris Coons and Tom Carper were among the big name elected ofcials that
endorsed Staton.

Grosso beats Brown in
at-large Council race

Veteran gay and Ward 8 community
activist Phil Pannell lost his bid for a Ward 8
seat on the D.C. State Board of Education
for the second year in a row on Tuesday,
nishing far behind incumbent school
board member Trayon Tray White.
Final but unofcial returns from the D.C.
Board of Elections show White captured
72.5 percent of the vote, with Pannell
receiving 27.1 percent.
Pannell lost to White in a special election
last year by fewer than 200 votes. Ward 8
gay Democratic activist Bradley Lewis, a
Pannell supporter, said Pannell faced a
greater challenge this year because White
had the benet of incumbency.
Lewis said White also beneted from
the support of Ward 8 Council member
and former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry,
who is highly popular in the ward. Barry
breezed to re-election on Tuesday,
trouncing challenger Jauhar Abraham by
an 87 percent to 12 percent margin.
In a separate school board race, gay
Dupont Circle ANC Commissioner Jack
Jacobson won election to the boards
Ward 2 seat. Jacobson ran unopposed.
In a development expected by most
political observers, acting Council
member Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large)
won his race to become Council Chair
in a special election. Mendelson, who
had been serving as acting chair, beat
Democratic challenger Calvin Gurley by a
75.5 percent to 27.3 percent margin.
Mendelson is a longtime supporter
of LGBT rights and played a key role
in helping to pass the citys same-sex
marriage law as chair of the committee
with jurisdiction over the law.
In the hotly contested race for the at-
large D.C. Council seat reserved for a non-
Democratic candidate, challenger David
Grosso beat incumbent Michael A. Brown.
Both are independents. With 100 percent
of the citys 142 precincts counted, Grosso
received 20.8 percent of the vote; Brown
received 15 percent of the vote.
Both candidates are strong supporters
of LGBT rights and campaigned
aggressively for the LGBT vote. Most
political observers say Brown lost due to
voter concern about a series of personal
and campaign nancial problems that
surfaced over the past several years
The two were competing in a seven-
candidate race for two at-large seats up
for grabs this year. Under the citys election
law, the candidates nishing in rst and
second place win the seats. Incumbent
Council member Vincent Orange, a
Democrat, won re-election to the other
seat, capturing 37.4 percent of the vote.
Republican Mary Brooks Beatty received
7 percent of the vote, independent
candidates A.J. Cooper and Leon Swain
each received 6.6 percent, and Statehood
Green Party candidate Ann Wilcox
received 5.8 percent.
Council members Jack Evans (D-Ward
2) and Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4), who are
also strong supporters of LGBT rights,
won re-election unopposed.
Council member Yvette Alexander (D-Ward)
beat Republican challenger Ron Moten by a
margin of 86.7 percent to 12.3 percent.
In other D.C. races, Democratic Del.
Eleanor Holmes Norton won re-election
with 88.7 percent of the vote, defeating gay
Libertarian Party candidate Bruce Majors,
who received 5.8 percent of the vote, and
Statehood Green Party candidate Natale
Stracuzzi, who received 4.7 percent.
Norton, a longtime strong supporter on
LGBT issues, received the endorsement of
the Stein Club. Major, who has also been a
longtime gay activist, was endorsed by the
gay conservative group GOProud.
D.C. shadow Senator Michael D. Brown
and shadow House candidate Nate
Bennett-Fleming, who also received the
Stein Clubs endorsement, won their races
by lopsided margins.
LGBT supportive at-large school board
candidate Mary Lord and Ward 7 school
board candidate Karen Williams, who also
expressed support on LGBT rights, won their
respective races by comfortable margins.

Cassey might be
nations youngest
out gay ofcial

A Georgetown University sophomore
was on track this week to become what
he claims will be the youngest openly gay
elected ofcial in the country, running for
a special ANC Commission post for Ward
2E, a campus-specic seat.
Craig Cassey, 20, ran as a write-in
candidate. The Board of Elections didnt
have numbers available as of Blade press
time this week, but Cassey says he was
running unopposed. He knows of no
one else conducting a write-in campaign
for the seat. If he wins, hell be sworn in
in January and serve with seven other
members of his commission.
The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund
conrmed that a Cassey victory would be
unprecedented for an LGBT elected ofcial.
Weve checked and can nd no out
elected ofcial as young as him anywhere in
the country, Denis Dison, a spokesperson
for the Victory Fund, wrote in an e-mail.
A representative from the D.C. Board of
Elections said this week that their ofce
should have estimates of the number of
write-ins in the race this week, but that
ofcial numbers and the names of the
candidates could take weeks to conrm.
Cassey hopes to inspire young people
if he wins.
In the same way, I think being the
youngest openly gay elected ofcial will
motivate others and will allow younger
gay and lesbian teens to see that you
can be elected as a gay person. Politics is
something you dont have to shy away
from for fear of persecution, he said.
Cassey said he went the write-in route
because the lack of students on campus
during summer, when petition signatures to
get on the ballot must be gathered, made
it difcult to secure enough to get on the
ballot. He tried but came up two short of
the 25 needed. Students switching dorms
made it hard to nd enough during summer
who knew where theyd be for fall, he said.
The matter was further complicated by a
redistricting process that occurred last year
affecting the makeup of the district for which
hes running.
Cassey, a psychology and philosophy
major, hopes to earn a masters degree in
applied positive psychology and use it to
help gay teens realize their potential and
role in the world.
In reference to his sexual orientation
and age, Cassey has not experienced any
criticism in his bid for ofce. Looking back on
the anti-gay assaults against Georgetown
students in recent years, Cassey expressed
relief at the changing culture.
In todays campus climate, we can have
an openly gay candidate run, and its really
not a big issue.
Cassey recently won the Victory Funds
Onward to Victory contest, which earned
him an all-expenses-paid trip to the Funds
Candidate & Campaign Training in Long
Beach, Calif., at the end of November.
Craig is what this country needs, said
Jack Jacobson, openly gay ANC Ward 2B
commissioner. Hes young and gay, which
are two underrepresented demographics.
Hes standing up and giving them a seat at
the table. It will make a positive impact for
the entire community.
Jacobson ran unopposed for the Ward 2
seat of the D.C. State Board of Education.
Early on in Casseys time at Georgetown,
he noticed tension between the student
body and the surrounding community.
He decided to run for a seat on the ANC
because he saw the potential to build a
stronger sense of community between the
two populations.
He hopes to promote more student
involvement in the Georgetown
community and encourage students to
volunteer in the area. He would also like
to see Georgetown University hold more
events to engage young, local families.

Ill. ofcial survives ap over trans rights
AURORA, Ill. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Christie Aird will retain her position
in the East Aurora, Illinois school district, despite controversy over implementing
and then rescinding policies protecting transgender students.
On Oct. 14, the school board unanimously approved gender protections
proposed by Aird that would have allowed students to use bathrooms matching
their gender identity, and compelled teachers to refer to gender-variant students
by the name of their choosing, according to the Chicago Phoenix.
However, controversy following the vote led to the school board rescinding
the policies just ve days later, and called a community meeting regarding Airds
continued employment in the district on Nov. 5, where teachers, parents and
students overwhelmingly expressed their support for Aird and her policies.

AIDS mortality rate still high among blacks
LOS ANGELES A new study shows that, despite drops in the overall mortality
rates among those infected by HIV, the disease still ranks as the ninth biggest
killer among African Americans.
The study published in The Archives of Internal Medicine this month shows a 93
percent drop from 1993 to 2007 in the HIV mortality rate for white American men, and an
88 percent drop for white women. However, less educated African-American men are 26
times more likely to die of an HIV-related illness if infected than their white counterparts.
The time has come for a major commitment of resources to address these
shameful disparities in HIV outcomes in the United States, writes Dr William
Cunningham of the UCLA Medical School in his editorial accompanying the
study, according to the organization AidsMap. There continue to be important
disparities among minority populations in the United States that deserve greater
attention than they have received thus far.
San Fran to provide transition care to patients
SAN FRANCISCO The body governing the San Francisco Department of Public
Health voted unanimously Tuesday to remove restrictions to transition-related care to
transgender patients enrolled in a health care program for uninsured residents.
According to the Transgender Law Center, the San Francisco Health Commission
brought Healthy SF in line with health care plans already in place for employees of
the cities of San Francisco and Berkeley by approving the new rules recommended
by the Board of Supervisors. Professional organizations, including the American
Medical Association, have deemed the procedures medically necessary.
Like so many of my transgender peers, my need for transition-related care was
so important that I focused on it above meeting my other needs, said health care
provider, and former Healthy SF enrollee, Cyd Nova. Today, as a trans health care
provider, I often see participants at the clinic who face the predicament of choosing
between saving money for transition related care or meeting basic needs.
Teens with lesbian moms do better in school
LAS VEGAS Teens with lesbian moms have higher grades and report being
generally happier in life, according to a new Williams Institute study tracking 78
kids over a period of 26 years.
These kids were planned and their lesbian mothers were very engaged in
parenting, Nanette Gartrell, principal investigator of the study for the Williams Institute
at UCLA, told CBS Las Vegas. At the end of high school, the teens tell us that they have
excellent grades, feel connected to their families and friends and admire their parents.
GLAAD adds new chief of staff
NEW YORK Former Gill Foundation Program Ofcer Dave Montez will join
the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation as chief of staff in 2013, overseeing
the organizations development, operations and programs departments, including
key campaigns that have been the cornerstone of GLAADs recent work.
Daves strong relationship with advocates in the LGBT equality movement along
with his experience building bridges between the LGBT and Latino communities
will strengthen GLAADs culture-changing work, said GLAAD President Herndon
Graddick. He will be integral in continuing to create a new GLAAD where our
dedicated staff builds national impact through campaigns that raise the visibility of
LGBT people and issues as well as hold anti-LGBT activists accountable.

Sandy decimates LGBT
homeless center
NYC facility served youth,
appeals for help

Superstorm Sandys record storm surge
on Oct. 29 inundated a New York City
drop-in center for homeless youth.
Carl Siciliano, executive director of the Ali
Forney Center, told the Washington Blade
that the storm left up to four feet of water
from the nearby Hudson River in the facility
on West 22nd Street in Manhattans West
Chelsea neighborhood. The water has since
receded, but Siciliano said the storm surge
decimated the drop-in center.
Everything is destroyed all of the
electricity in the place, the oors, the
computers, the laptops, the phones, les,
all the furniture, he said. Everything
is just destroyed. The refrigerator was
oating and knocked over, all the food
was out. The space is uninhabitable.
The organization named in honor
of Ali Forney, a homeless LGBT youth
advocate who was murdered in the
Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan in
1997, operates seven housing facilities in
Brooklyn and another in Queens. None of
them suffered any damage from the storm.
Were very grateful for that, said
Siciliano.
Sandy also left the Ali Forney Centers
administrative ofce in Midtown Manhattan
undamaged. A second drop-in center
currently under construction in Harlem is not
scheduled to open until early next year.
Its going to be some months before
were able to be in there so were going to
have to really scramble to gure out a way
to work with these kids, said Siciliano.
The kids that come into that space are
like our most vulnerable kids. Theyre
the ones who are out on the streets
with nowhere to go. And that programs
really a lifeline for them. They get food
and clothing and showers and bathroom
facilities, medical care [and] HIV testing.
Its kind of our triage place in the city for
kids who are chucked out on the streets.
Sandy forced the Empire State Pride
Agenda, the National Gay and Lesbian
Task Force, the International Gay and
Lesbian Human Rights Commission and
other LGBT advocacy groups to close
their New York ofces because of a lack
of electricity and in some cases ooding
from the storm surge that reached 13.88
feet at the Battery in lower Manhattan.
Neither the LGBT Community Center in
Greenwich Village or the Gay Mens Health
Crisis new ofces on West 33rd Street
on the West Side of Manhattan suffered
any damage from Sandy. Gay City News
reported the storm surge ooded Bailey-
Holt House, a building on the corner of
Christopher Street and the West Side
Highway in the far West Village in which
44 people with HIV/AIDS live.
We seem to have taken the brunt of
it, said Siciliano, referring to the impact
the storm had on other LGBT advocacy
groups in the ve boroughs. Were just
half a block away from the river.
Siciliano said he has spoken with
ofcials at the White House, the Federal
Emergency Management Agency and
both New York City Council Christine
Quinns and Gov. Andrew Cuomos ofces.
The Ali Forney Center is also accepting
donations on its website to continue its
outreach and advocacy efforts.
There are so many problems that I
have to deal with all the time with these
kids, but I never did really think in my
mind about catastrophic ooding, said
Siciliano. Thats denitely a new level of
things to be concerned about.

Claims victory with strong
support from gay voters

President Obama won re-election to the
White House on Tuesday, bringing to an end
a tumultuous campaign against Republican
presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
Media outlets declared Obama the
winner at about 11:15, around 15 minutes
after the polls closed on the West Coast.
The victory was the result of Obama
picking up wins in Ohio, Colorado, Virginia
and Iowa. Florida was too close to call at
Blade press time.
Obama gave a victory speech at his
campaign headquarters in Chicago that
political observers said harkened back to
the passionate speeches that helped him
rst win the presidency in 2008.
Americas never been about what can
be done for us, Obama said. Its about
what can be done by us together through
the hard and frustrating, but necessary
work of self-government. Thats the
principle we were founded on.
In his speech, Obama included a
reference to the gays as among the groups
that he says are included and welcomed in
the United States.
It doesnt matter whether youre black
or white or Hispanic or Asian or Native
American or young or old or rich or poor,
able, disabled, gay or straight, you can
make it here in America if youre willing to
try, Obama said.
After conceding the election in a
phone call to Obama, Romney delivered
his concession speech at his campaign
headquarters in Boston, Mass. The
Republican candidates words recalled
a similar speech given to his one-time
opponent for a U.S. Senate seat, the late
Sen. Edward Kennedy, during the 1980
Democratic National Convention.
I believe in America, Romney said.
I believe in the people of America. And I
ran for ofce because Im concerned about
America. This election is over, but our
principles endure. I believe that the principles
upon which this nation was founded are the
only sure guide to a resurgent economy and
to renewed greatness.
In his rst term, Obama took numerous
steps to benet the LGBT community,
including repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell,
dropping the U.S. governments defense
of the Defense of Marriage Act in court
and passage of hate crime protection
legislation. In May, he ended his 19-month
evolution to come out in favor of same-
sex marriage. LGBT advocates are
waiting to see how hell tackle the issue
of LGBT workplace discrimination and the
advancement of marriage equality over
the course of his second term.
In contrast, Romney said he opposes
discrimination, but signed a pledge from
the anti-gay National Organization for
Marriage promising to support a U.S.
constitutional amendment banning same-
sex marriage throughout the country,
defend DOMA in court and establish
a commission on religious liberty to
investigate the alleged harassment of
opponents of same-sex marriage.
Chad Grifn, president of the Human
Rights Campaign, praised Obama for his
win and said it represents a landmark victory
for LGBT people throughout the country.
As millions of Americans celebrate
President Obamas reelection tonight, the
LGBT community is particularly elated to
send the most pro-equality president ever
back to the White House for a second
term, Grifn said. There is no doubt
that we will continue to see tremendous
progress toward full equality like weve
made during his rst four years.
Grifn also thanked Obama for coming
out for marriage equality in the face of
speculation that the announcement would
diminish from his election chances.
While some pundits predicted the
Presidents support for marriage equality
would hinder his campaign, we know the
opposite is true, Grifn said. President
Obamas historic and heartfelt declaration
that all loving and committed couples
should be able to marry further rallied
millions of voters and sparked conversations
that advanced marriage campaigns around
the country. His reelection after expressing
support for marriage equality is further
proof that the momentum is on the side of
marriage for all families.
Jerame Davis, executive director of
the National Stonewall Democrats, said
Obama made history over the course of
his rst four years and will continue to do
so over the next four.
Four years ago, our country made
history by electing Barack Obama as
the rst black president, Davis said.
After four years, the American people
have spoken and they want to continue
marching forward with this transformative
Commander in Chief. As the rst president
to sign a pro-LGBT bill, the rst president
to speak out in support of the freedom to
marry, and the president who made open
service in our armed forces for gays and
lesbians possible, LGBT Americans have
won a major victory tonight.
Not every LGBT organization was
behind Obama. The gay conservative
group GOProud endorsed Romney in the
election, saying a change in course over the
economy was the priority of LGBT voters.
Jimmy LaSalvia, GOProuds executive
director, congratulated Obama for his win in
a statement while saying he won re-election
by performing a political sleight of hand.
We congratulate Barack Obama on
his win, LaSalvia said. The President
performed a spectacular political sleight of
hand in this election. Instead of this election
being a referendum on his failed record
on jobs and the economy, Obama and his
campaign successfully made this about
side-show issues and the culture wars.
Despite the differences between
Obama and Romney on these issues,
discussion about LGBT issues or same-
sex marriage was virtually non-existent
over the course of the presidential
campaign. Not one question on LGBT
rights or same-sex marriage came up in
the three presidential debates or the vice
presidential debate, and the candidates
didnt take time to discuss them over the
course of the general election.
The exception was when Obama
and Democrats were seeking to rally
their progressive base. References to
LGBT issues permeated the Democratic
National Convention, where speakers
voiced support for the LGBT community
and criticized the Republican Party for
opposing same-sex marriage. Additionally,
when making appearances at campaign
rallies Obama made references to Dont
Ask, Dont Tell repeal and mentioned
gays as among the groups he supports.
77 percent of gay
voters backed Obama
An exit poll published the day after the
election found 5 percent of voters self-
identied as gay, lesbian and bisexual and
more than three-quarters of them cast
their ballots for President Obama.
The national exit poll, which was
conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner
Research on behalf of a consortium of
national media outlets, found gay voters
made up 5 percent of the electorate and 77
percent of them voted for Obama while 23
percent voted for Republican presidential
nominee Mitt Romney. The pollster didnt
ask voters if they identify as transgender.
Compared to data from previous
elections, the poll also found more
voters self-identied as LGBT than in
previous elections. In previous years, the
percentage was either 3 or 4 percent and
hadnt before reached 5 percent.
Additionally, the poll found more LGBT
voters backed Obama in 2012 than did in
2008 when he was running against then-
Republican nominee John McCain. At the
time, 70 percent of LGBT voters backed
Obama while 27 percent backed McCain.
Chad Grifn, president of the Human
Rights Campaign, said in a statement
lauding the election night results that the
growth in the number of voters who self-
identify as LGB shows they have signicant
political power.
Our community has exed our political
muscle with exit polls showing an increase
from 4 percent of the vote in 2008 to 5
percent this year, Grifn said. And the
president gained many more supporters
among lesbian, gay and bisexual voters
jumping seven points to garner 77 percent
of our vote.
The poll also shows a notable increase in the
percentage of self-identied gay voters who
voted Democratic in 2012 compared to 2010,
when support for Republicans was the highest
ever recorded. At that time, 69 percent of gay
voters cast their ballots for Democrats, while
31 percent cast their ballots for Republicans.
In November 2010, Dont Ask, Dont Tell
wasnt yet repealed, nor had Obama voiced
support for same-sex marriage.

will likely prevent action
on LGBT bills

The results on Election Day were hailed
as a milestone as a record number of
openly LGBT people were elected to
Congress, although prospects for the
passage of pro-LGBT legislation next year
dont look good.
In addition to re-electing President
Obama and approving the marriage
equality side on ballot initiatives in four
states, voters elected at least six openly
LGB lawmakers to Congress in addition
to electing pro-LGBT lawmakers like
Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts and
Sherrod Brown in Ohio.
Tammy Baldwin made history by
becoming the rst openly gay person
elected to the U.S. Senate (see related
story) as incumbent Reps. Jared Polis
(D-Colo.) and David Cicilline (D-R.I.) were
re-elected. Joining them will be Sean
Patrick Maloney, wholl be the rst openly
gay congressman from New York; Mark
Pocan, wholl occupy the seat Baldwin held
in the House; and Mark Takano, a California
Democrat wholl be the rst openly gay
person of color elected to Congresss.
As of press time, the race to represent
Arizonas 9th congressional district
between bisexual Democratic candidate
Kyrsten Sinema and Republican Vernon
Parker wasnt yet called. However, Sinema
maintained a slim lead in the votes that were
already tabulated. If elected, Sinema would
be the rst bisexual member of Congress.
Chuck Wolfe, CEO of the Gay & Lesbian
Victory Fund, acknowledged the night
resulted in historic wins in terms of LGBT
representation at the federal level of U.S.
government.
Its without a doubt historic, Wolfe
said. I think you can talk about the fact that
it was history-making, and those that won
will be making history for years to come.
The election results means Congress
will look very different in terms of LGBT
representation in the wake of Rep. Barney
Franks (D-Mass.) retirement and Baldwin
leaving the House for the Senate. The results
also mean that number of openly gay House
members will go from four to at least six.
Gay candidates who didnt win were
Republican Richard Tisei, who lost his bid
to unseat pro-LGBT Rep. John Tierney
(D-Mass.), and lesbian Democrat Nicole
LaFavour, who lost her bid to unseat Rep.
Mike Simpson (R-Idaho). LaFavour wasnt
endorsed by the Victory Fund.
Despite the excitement, the Election
Day results in some respects resulted
in the status quo for the legislative and
executive branch of the U.S. government
from what existed after the 2010 election
when no pro-LGBT legislation passed
Congress. Democrats retained control of
the White House and the Senate, while
Republican remain in control of the House.
As of press time, the Senate was poised
to have 54 senators caucus with the
Democrats and 45 senators caucus with
the Republicans, although the Senate
race in North Dakota remained too close
to call. That would mean a net gain of one
Democrat in the Senate. In the House,
Republicans retained control of the
chamber, but had a slimmer majority of 232
seats while Democrats claimed 191 seats
with 12 races being too close to call.
Chad Grifn, president of the Human
Rights Campaign, acknowledged in
a conference call with reporters on
Wednesday that these results still mean
a pro-LGBT majority doesnt exist
in Congress, making the passage of
favorable legislation difcult.
On the issue of federal workplace non-
discrimination protections, which remain an
outstanding issue for the LGBT community,
Grifn said in response to a question from
the Washington Blade the votes wont
be there to pass legislation known as the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act.
We need to acknowledge that although
we certainly made some gains in the
Senate, and potentially some gains in the
House, we are still short of having a vote
for an inclusive ENDA in the House, Grifn
said. We need to be realistic about that.
Grifn said more successes could be
seen on the state and local level and
called on the White House to revisit the
idea of an executive order barring federal
contractors from discriminating against
LGBT people, which it said in April it
wouldnt issue at the time.
It is my hope and belief that we can
get an executive order out of this White
House, Grifn said. It is something that
should be and we will continue to urge
our newly re-elected president to do. That
would not be the full solution, but it would
be a step toward the end goal.
Tico Almeida, president of Freedom to
Work and one of the leading advocates of
the executive order, also said its time for the
White House to reconsider to its decision in
the wake of the Election Day results.
Yesterday was a turning point for our
LGBT movement and President Obama
has proven that elected ofcials can stand
strongly on the side of LGBT fairness
without fear of voter backlash, Almeida
said. We will continue to push for the
president to sign the executive order as
soon as possible because every day that
passes is another day in which taxpayer
money can be squandered on anti-LGBT
workplace harassment and discrimination.
Asked whether the White House would
revisit this idea, Shin Inouye, a White
House spokesperson said, I have no
updates for you on that issue.
Almeida also said action could be seen
in the Senate to pass ENDA and called
for a hearing, mark-up, and full Senate
vote in 2013 when lawmakers convene at
the start of the next Congress.
One lesson from recent LGBT advocacy
efforts is that we should not wait until the
second year of a congressional session to
move legislation forward because thats
when some elected ofcials start getting
nervous about the upcoming election and
the legislative clock starts to run out of
legislative days, Almeida said.
In the addition to workplace non-
discrimination protections, action could
be done at the federal level to repeal the
Defense of Marriage Act, which prohibits
federal recognition of same-sex marriage.
Grifn said during the conference call
HRC would continue to push forward
in Congress, but expressed skepticism
about passage of any legislation.
We do have to remember the
leadership in the House of Representatives
is not a pro-equality set of leaders, so we
still have a lot of work to do there, but I can
believe we can continue this momentum,
Grifn said.
Grifn placed greater emphasis action
from the Supreme Court, which on Nov.
2o will determine whether it will take
up litigation challenging Californias
Proposition 8 and Section 3 of DOMA. If
the court declines to hear the Prop 8 case,
it would mean same-sex marriage would
almost immediately return to California.
Another question is which states will
advance pro-LGBT legislation or relationship
recognition bills in the wake of the Election
Day results. Grifn said he expects progress
there, but said its very early to determine
which states will see action.

In an historic rst, lesbian Rep. Tammy
Baldwin won her race for the U.S. Senate
from Wisconsin Tuesday night, becoming the
rst openly gay person to serve in the Senate.
With 99 percent of precincts reporting
Wednesday morning, Baldwin was ahead of
former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson
by a 51 percent to 46 percent margin.
I am honored and humbled and
grateful, Baldwin said in election night
remarks. And I am ready to get to work,
ready to stand with President Barack Obama,
ready to ght for Wisconsins middle class!
LGBT organizations throughout the country
hailed Baldwins victory as an important
milestone in the LGBT rights movement.
This is a historic victory not only for
the people of Wisconsin, but for lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender Americans
across the country who have nally
gained an authentic and powerful voice
in Congress upper chamber, said Chuck
Wolf, president and CEO of the Gay and
Lesbian Victory Fund, which provided
nancial support for Baldwins campaign.
Tonight Tammy shattered a glass
ceiling that has existed for more than
two centuries, and we could not be more
thrilled, Wolf said.
Baldwins supporters in Wisconsin noted
that she also broke another barrier by
becoming the rst woman to be elected
to the U.S. Senate from Wisconsin.
Chad Grifn, president of the Human
Rights Campaign, which also provided
nancial support and eld workers to
assist Baldwins campaign, said Baldwin
succeeded in drawing support from voters
on a wide range of issues.
With a relentless focus on the issues
that matter to most Wisconsin voters
economic security, access to healthcare
and fairness and inclusion for all, Grifn
said, shes earned the respect of all her
constituents, gay and straight.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the election
division of the Wisconsin Government
Accountability Board, which runs the states
elections, reported that Baldwin received
1,533,868 votes, or 51 percent of the
total. The board reported that Thompson
received 1,370,664 votes, at 46 percent.
Two other candidates received a
combined total of 3 percent of the vote,
the board reported.
Early polls showed Thompson with
a slight lead over Baldwin shortly after
Thompson won the GOP nomination
in a primary in August. By the middle of
September, polls showed Baldwin in the
lead, but the size of her lead narrowed by
late October, with some pollsters saying
the two candidates were in a statistical tie
going into Tuesdays election.
Baldwins quest to become the nations
rst openly gay U.S. senator captured
the attention of the LGBT people across
the country, many of whom contributed
money to Baldwins campaign.
She also received backing from
the Democratic Senatorial Campaign
Committee and other Democratic
leaning groups, including labor unions,
environmental organizations and the
womens advocacy group Emilys List.
In 1998, Baldwin became the rst openly
gay non-incumbent to win election to the U.S.
House when she won her race for Wisconsins
Second Congressional District in which the
state capital of Madison is located.
In her seven terms in Congress, Baldwin
became known as one of the strongest
advocates of LGBT rights in the House as
well as one of the strongest champions of
progressive causes and policies.
Thompson, whose supporters describe
him as a moderate, served as governor
of Wisconsin between 1987 and 2001. He
served as Secretary of the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services in the Bush
administration from 2001 to 2005. He
became a candidate for the Republican
presidential nomination in 2008 but
dropped out of the race before the start
of the primaries.
Thompson has said he personally
opposes same-sex marriage and supports
the Defense of Marriage Act, which denes
marriage under federal law as a union only
between a man and a woman. But he
has said he doesnt favor a constitutional
amendment to ban marriage equality
and favors leaving same-sex marriage
decisions to the states.
He has said he opposes workplace
discrimination based on someones sexual
orientation but has not said whether he
would support federal legislation to ban
anti-LGBT discrimination in the workplace.
Although Wisconsin members of the gay
Republican group Log Cabin Republicans
supported Thompson, the national Log
Cabin organization, which endorsed GOP
presidential candidate Mitt Romney for
president, didnt endorse Thompson.
We endorsed candidates that engaged
with us and asked for our endorsement,
said Log Cabin president R. Clarke Cooper,
who noted that the group endorsed just
four U.S. Senate candidates this year.
The outcome of Tuesdays Senate
election in Wisconsin marked the end of a
bruising campaign, which the Milwaukee
Journal Sentinel says may have broken a
national record for the most negative TV
ads of any U.S. Senate campaign in the
state and possibly in the nation.
The Journal Sentinel reports that both
Baldwin and Thompson appear to have
lashed out at each other with equal force,
with some independent observers saying
some of the ads from both sides included
misleading information.
None of the Thompson attack ads
appear to have singled out Baldwin based
on her sexual orientation.
However, in at least one instance, a
Thompson campaign ofcial sent an email
to the news media in early September,

the Democratic National Convention in
Charlotte, N.C., highlighting Baldwins
appearance at an LGBT Pride festival in
Madison several years earlier.
The email, sent by Thompson campaign
staffer Brian Nemoir, included an attached
YouTube video showing Baldwin waiving
her arms while dancing on a stage with
the popular Wisconsin rock band V05.
Some of the band members were dressed
in Wonder Woman costumes as the band
played the theme song for the Wonder
Woman TV series.
Nemoir stated in his email that Baldwin
was scheduled to discuss heartland values
in her Democratic Convention speech.
Clearly, theres no one better
positioned to talk heartland values than
Tammy, he said sarcastically in the email.
Baldwin supporters called the email a
form of gay baiting, saying it was an attempt
to question Baldwins values because
she appeared at an LGBT Pride event. A
Thompson campaign spokesperson said
Nemoir was acting as an individual and not
on behalf of the campaign when he sent
the email and video.

Advocates condent of
sweep in Md., Maine,
Minn., Wash. battles

Advocacy groups across the country on
Tuesday celebrated the passage of two
state same-sex marriage referenda and
the defeat of a proposed constitutional
amendment that would have banned
nuptials for gays and lesbians in another.
Maryland voters supported Question 6
by a 52-48 percent margin, while Maines
Question 1 that will allow gays and lesbians
to legally marry in the state passed with
52 percent of the vote. Washingtons
Referendum 74 that would uphold the states
same-sex marriage law remains ahead by a
52-48 percent margin with what Washington
United for Marriage estimates as 60 percent
of the ballots counted as of deadline.
Minnesotans narrowly defeated a
proposed state constitutional amendment
that would have dened marriage as
between a man and a woman by a 51-48
percent margin.
Years from now well remember this
Election Day as the most important and
the most historic in the history of the LGBT
movement, said Chad Grifn, president of the
Human Rights Campaign, in a video message.
He noted HRC contributed $20 million over the
last two years to the four statewide same-sex
marriage campaigns. Weve won a landslide
victory at the ballot box. Weve secured the
rst ever electoral victory for marriage equality
in Maine, Maryland and Minnesota. And were
optimistic about the results still to come in
Washington state.
Freedom to Marry gave $4.6 million to the
four statewide same-sex marriage campaigns.
It helped raise another $2.4 million to support
public education campaigns in Maine,
Maryland, Minnesota and Washington.
Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom
to Marry, categorized the election results
to the Washington Blade as irrefutable
momentum in favor of the freedom to
marry that will give enormous condence
to lawmakers and others to support nuptials
for gays and lesbians. Casey Pick of Log
Cabin Republicans further described the
election results as a turning point.
It is something the nation will take notice
of, she told the Blade from Maine where
she had been working with Mainers United
for Marriage in support of Question 1 for the
last two weeks. Never again will opponents
of marriage equality be able to say that
every time the people vote on the issue they
favor marriage as one man and one woman
because thats no longer true.
LGBT advocates in other states
where voters did not consider same-sex
marriage ballot measures also noted the
historic results.
For all of the families in Maine and
Maryland, where voters upheld the rights
of same-sex couples to wed, MassEquality
is pleased that they will soon experience
what we have celebrated for eight years
now in Massachusetts: families that
are stronger and communities that are
healthier because LGBTQ individuals and
their families are treated with dignity and
fairness, said Kara Suffredini, executive
director of MassEquality, in a statement.
She noted nearly 20,000 gay and lesbian
couples have married in Massachusetts
since the commonwealths same-sex
marriage law took effect in May 2004.
Our rights should never be determined
by a majority vote. But the wins in Maine
and Maryland, as well as the defeat of a
proposed anti-marriage Constitutional
amendment in Minnesota, are denitive
proof that there is a growing majority in
America that supports our rights, and that
equality wins, including at the ballot box.
Equality Illinois CEO Bernard Cherkasov
also noted the historic election results
after Maines Question 1 passed.
The ballot box victory is the latest evidence
that the tide has turned and that momentum
is on the side of full LGBT equality, he said.
We now have a president who ran on
support for marriage equality, a Democratic
Party that included a marriage plank in the
party platform, seven states, including Maine,
and also the District of Columbia where same-
sex couples can marry.
An ABC News/Washington Post
poll conducted after President Obama
endorsed marriage rights for same-sex
couples in May found 53 percent of
Americans supported nuptials for gays
and lesbians, compared to only 36 percent
in 2006. Even among social conservatives,
the issue seems to have less resonance.
Only 19 percent of those who took part
in a straw poll at the annual Conservative
Political Action Committee conference in
D.C. in February cited the promotion of
traditional values as the most important
issue going into the election. Only
one percent who took part in the 2011
CPAC straw poll said stopping same-sex
marriage was their top priority.
Obviously we are very disappointed
in losing four tough election battles
by narrow margins, said National
Organization for Marriage President Brian
Brown in a statement.
NOM contributed more than $5.5 million
to oppose same-sex marriage referenda
in Maine, Maryland and Washington
and support Minnesotas proposed
constitutional amendment to ban nuptials
for gays and lesbians. Brown conceded
supporters and opponents of these
respective ballot measures outspent those
who opposed marriage rights for same-sex
couples by at least a four-to-one margin.
He also downplayed the idea the
election results are what he described as
a changing point in how Americans view
gay marriage.
Though we are disappointed over
these losses, we remain faithful to our
mission and committed to the cause of
preserving marriage as God designed it,
said Brown. Marriage is a true and just
cause, and we will never abandon the eld
of battle just because we experienced a
setback. There is much work to do, and
we begin that process now.

Observing Trans Day
of Remembrance
Organized by First Unitarian Church
of Baltimore, Interweave and the
Transgender Response Team, the 14th
annual International Transgender Day of
Remembrance will be observed on Nov.
20 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Sanctuary of
the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore, 12
W. Franklin St.
The event includes an Interfaith Memorial
Service; the Reading of the Names and a
candle lighting ceremony. Transgender
people of faith and their allies provide
focus and leadership for this event.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance
was set aside to memorialize those who
were killed due to anti-transgender
hatred or prejudice. The event is held in
November to honor Rita Hester, whose
murder on Nov. 28, 1998 kicked off the
Remembering Our Dead web project
and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in
1999. Rita Hesters murder like many
anti-transgender murder cases has yet
to be solved.
Although not every person represented
during the Day of Remembrance self-
identies as transgender that is, as a
transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise
gender-variant each was a victim
of violence based on bias against
transgender people.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance
raises public awareness of hate crimes
against transgender people. It publicly
mourns and honors the lives of those who
might otherwise be forgotten. The vigil is
intended to express love and respect for
transgender people in the face of national
indifference and hatred.
On Nov. 14, Mayor Stephanie
Rawlings-Blake will hold a news
conference concerning Transgender
Day of Remembrance in Baltimore. It
will take place at 10 a.m. at the Rotunda
in Baltimore City Hall, 100 N. Holliday
St. Besides the mayor, speakers will
include Jenna Fischetti of TransMaryland.
Additional speakers are being sought.
Sandy disrupts
Out & Equal Summit
The 2012 Out & Equal Workplace
Summit opened with Hurricane Sandy and
ended announcing the OUTIES award
winners. Approximately 1,400 out of the
expected 2,100 individuals and corporate
sponsors attended the summit at the
Baltimore Convention Center. The Summit
schedule was revised and evolved to
minimal programming for Oct. 29, partial
programming for Tuesday with a full and
revised program resuming on Wednesday
and Thursday.
Those who braved the storm and
navigated the travel obstacles stated their
commitment to making the workplace
a more welcoming place drove them
to attend with some coming in early to
ensure their arrival. Hurricane or not, we
were going to be here, said Carri Bridges,
Chrysler Global Diversity Events Manager,
who traveled from Auburn Hills, Mich.

chief marketing ofcer, said that this
marked the rst time in the 22 years he has
been involved with the event that he had
to work through a hurricane or a tropical
storm. He said that they expected about
a third of the registered attendees would
not make it to the summit, which says a
great deal about the commitment of our
attendees and our community. It has the
most importance for us, it is life and death
for us. I do not mean that in a dramatic
way. We spend most of our waking life
at work, so it is life and like many of my
brothers and sisters, I do not want to work
where I will be miserable. The death is
that of the closet, which is a slow terrible

Travolta joins Waters for conversation
Maryland Film Festival is holding a tribute to John Travolta, who is being
awarded the Festivals Reel Guy for his performance in Savages, Saturday
night at 10 p.m. at the MICA Brown Center (1300 West Mt. Royal Ave.).
Travolta will be joined by John Waters for Maryland Film Festivals fth annual
Open Conversations. The program was designed to bridge the community
to people who create the movies. Both Travolta and Waters have a history of
performing in Baltimore.

Bump, set, spike with Charm City
Charm City Volleyball is hosting social play for volleyball players of all levels

Looking back on years of
struggle in the Free State
It was the biggest and busiest night in my
10 years at the Washington Blade: President
Obamas re-election, Tammy Baldwins Sen-
ate triumph, openly gay and bi candidates
winning seats in Congress and the rst-ever
wins in state marriage ballot ghts.
Amid the avalanche of unprecedented
good news, my partner and I took a break
to visit an election night party sponsored
by Marylanders for Marriage Equality, which
fought to uphold the states marriage equal-
ity law. A lifelong Marylander, I scanned the
crowd and saw so many familiar faces. Gay
couples together for more than 20 years;
other couples raising children; openly gay
and lesbian members of our state legisla-
ture; past leaders of the states LGBT rights
group who toiled in obscurity for so long.
Gov. Martin OMalley was there, too.
Five years ago, when the Maryland Court
of Appeals narrowly ruled against mar-
riage rights for gay couples, I launched a
tough campaign to hold Democrats like
OMalley accountable for their promises to
our community. At the time, OMalley said
no one should be messing with the sacra-
ments anyway and he denied his earlier
public support for marriage equality. Af-
ter the courts 4-3 ruling, I joined a group
of demoralized LGBT activists in front of a
supportive Baltimore church for a rally. We
were called faggots and worse by pass-
ing motorists. Most people there cried,
their hopes dashed and wedding plans
canceled. It was a crushing defeat.
After a string of editorials criticizing the
governor for his betrayal, he invited me to
a meeting in his Annapolis ofce, which I
agreed to attend only if it were on the re-
cord. There had been enough secret meet-
ings and abandoned backroom promises.
OMalley was awkward and, like George W.
Bush at the time, pointedly refused to even
use the word gay. He said he supported
civil unions and cited his Catholic faith.
I left feeling even worse: This was a
governor who had attracted a strong
LGBT following and previously pledged
support for civil marriage in an on-camera
TV interview. But he changed his mind and
there didnt seem to be much hope for a
bill without his backing.
What I didnt fully realize then was that
the genie was already out of the bottle.
The brave and public stand of the Mary-
land lawsuits plaintiffs had illustrated the
diversity of our community and just how
downright normal our struggles are. They
told stories of raising kids without legal
protections; losing a partner and the atten-
dant tax burdens of dying single but own-
ing a home and other property jointly; and
the fears of entering a nursing home and
being forced back into the closet in elder
years. Those courageous plaintiffs planted
the seed that sprouted this week into full
state marriage rights for same-sex couples.
Their bravery emboldened gay and
lesbian members of our state legislature
to speak out more forcefully and inspired
others like Del. Peter Murphy to come out
publicly. Maryland boasts the most openly
gay and lesbian members of a state leg-
islature in the country and their visibility is
what made it possible for the marriage bill
ultimately to pass.
There are so many people responsible
for the victory in Maryland this week that its
impossible to draft a complete list, but a few
key names come to mind deserving of some
credit: Lisa Polyak and Gita Deane; Charles
Butler, Jon Kaplan, Dan Furmansky and other
early leaders of Free State Justice and Equal-
ity Maryland; Patrick Wojahn, Dave Kolesar
and the rest of the 2006 lawsuit plaintiffs; At-
torney General Doug Gansler for recognizing
out-of-state marriages and for becoming the
rst statewide elected ofcial to embrace the
cause; HRC for stepping in this year when
many national gay donors and other advo-
cacy groups said Maryland was a lost cause;
the openly gay and lesbian members of the
state legislature; President Obama, Brendan
Ayanbadejo and the NAACP for their sup-
port; and, yes, OMalley for not only signing
the bill into law but putting the weight of his
administration behind its preservation.
Ultimately, the biggest thanks goes to av-
erage Maryland voters who saw through the
recycled hate rhetoric from past campaigns
against our rights in 32 other states. They
were not fooled by fools like Derek Mc-
Coy, Emmett Burns, Tony Perkins and Harry
Jackson who found out the hard way that
appealing to voters most base instincts no
longer constitutes a winning strategy.
And, nally, a thank you to my partner, Bri-
an, and my family, friends and colleagues for
enduring years of my own rants, frustration
and venting about Maryland. Its been a long
road to this sweet destination and I look for-
ward to a 2013 lled with the long-delayed
weddings of so many friends. Congratula-
tions Maryland, for living up to your Free
State moniker.

Groundbreaking Sunday
Bloody Sunday out on DVD
Just over four decades ago, cinemat-
ic history was made. Two men kissed in
the 1971 movie Sunday Bloody Sun-
day, directed by John Schlesinger. This
groundbreaking lm, the rst to portray
bisexuality and queer characters kissing
and loving, without judgment, is just out
on DVD and Blu-ray.
Intimacy in TV and movies from Glee
to The New Normal to The Kids
Are All Right is now so common that
we forget it wasnt always so. In Hope
Springs, the recent Meryl Streep/Tom-
my Lee Jones rom-com, Streeps char-
acter even turns to a LGBT sex guide to
recharge her love life.
Yet, entertainment media only recently
became besotted with gay smooching.
We had to wait for Mitchell and Cameron
to pucker up in Modern Family and
queer kissing in movies wasnt that main-
stream before Brokeback Mountain.
While my 84-year-old stepmom said the
other day, Why shouldnt gay people
kiss in movies? Theyre getting married
now, I bet some folks still dont want
queer lip lock at their cineplex.
When Sunday Bloody Sunday was
rst released, audiences were stunned
to see two male characters, Daniel (Pe-
ter Finch), a gay doctor, and Bob (Murray
Head), a bisexual artist, kiss. Especially,
because Daniel and Bobs exchange of
affection is presented as a normal part of
life as being no more unnatural than
when Bob kisses Alex (Glenda Jackson)
an employment consultant. (The movie,
which takes place in Great Britain, is the
story of a love triangle. Alex and Daniel
are both Bobs lovers.)
Critics loved Sunday Bloody Sunday
and the lm, which appeared on many
1971 best movie lists, received four Acad-
emy Award nominations and won several
BAFTA awards (the British Oscars). More
important than any Oscar nods, Sun-
day has been a life-line for many of us
who grew up queer. Gay writer Michael
Cunningham has said that the lm saved
my life.
Ill never forget when I, a young lesbi-
an, rst saw Sunday Bloody Sunday in
the mid-1970s in Boston. Then, not that
long after Stonewall, Id seen few people
like me, in real or reel life. Decriminaliza-
tion of homosexuality had only begun
in Great Britain in 1967. The American
Psychiatric Association had only recently
said you were mentally ill if you were gay,
and most of us were far from being out
and proud.
Its hard to imagine the impact of
Sunday Bloody Sunday now that LGBT
celebs host awards shows, same-sex
couples marry in some states and gays
and lesbians serve their country openly
in uniform.
But back in the day, Sunday Bloody
Sunday was as life changing and exhila-
rating as the advent of penicillin or see-
ing an astronaut on the moon. Watching
its queer characters (who werent sinners,
sad, confused or crazy) kiss, love and live
their lives just as the straight characters
lived and loved, brought many of us out
of our guilt-ridden closet. Schlesingers
moving movie moved us into the light of
day. Engrossed in the lm, I for the rst
time, saw that I, too, could be gay and
live my life without shame.
Schlesinger told honest stories about
real people and real emotions, said Wil-
liam J. Mann, author of Edge of Mid-
night: The Life of John Schlesinger, in
an interview featured on the Sunday
Bloody Sunday DVD. Schlesinger, who
was gay and died in 2003, was reecting
his own search for love, Mann said.
Sunday Bloody Sunday was ground-
breaking not only because it presents
same-sex attraction, but bisexuality as a
normal part of life. What John was say-
ing ... was that this was just one aspect of
who these people are, Mann said, We
shouldnt centralize it in such a way that
makes it bigger or somehow more re-
moved from the way it really is in their life.
Sunday Bloody Sunday is as en-
gaging today as when it rst came out.

Residents, patrons urge city
to reform unpopular license
protest system
Its been a long 10 years or so.
In the dogs life of local small businesses,
more like an eternity.
The protracted period that D.C. elected
ofcials have danced around xing the citys
much maligned and out-of-balance liquor li-
censing system remains inexcusable. During
that time they have failed to reform the law
bestowing both self-selected ad hoc Gang
of 5 license protest groups and small un-
representative citizens associations with an
infamously special intervention ability in the
alcohol license approval process.
Well soon discover whether the D.C.
Council and Mayor Vincent Gray will nally
enact meaningful measures that result in real
reforms. The clock is ticking with a looming
legislative session deadline at year-end.
So far theyve been content with offering
only lip service while looking the other way.
Ongoing inaction directly harms hospital-
ity enterprises comprising the citys largest
hometown business segment and revenue
generator, as well as primary employer lo-
cal restaurants, bars, nightclubs, lounges and
cafes. It costs community small business en-
trepreneurs sums commonly approaching
$100,000, inordinate opening delays of up to
a year or more, and simply sinks some proj-
ects and discourages development.
Whats distinctly different this time is that
residents and patrons are increasingly urging
city leaders to buckle down and repair the li-
censing system, introducing order and even-
handedness to the process.
When chef/owner Jamie Leeds Dupont
Circle restaurant Hanks Oyster Bar recently
suffered renewed opposition by a mere
handful of longtime licensing objectors, forc-
ing her to close half of her outdoor patio for
the entire summer, the surrounding commu-
nity rallied for reform.
Nearly 2,500 residents and patrons, in-
cluding a sizable contingency of LGBT sup-
porters, promptly sent emails and personal
messages to D.C. Council members Jim Gra-
ham, who chairs the committee that oversees
Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) agency
issues, and Jack Evans, who represents the
area. They demanded Council reform of the
unpopular protest scheme as well as object-
ing to the treatment of Hanks.
These stakeholders specically called for
eliminating the ability of small groups to in-
terject themselves into the process outside of
the open forum offered by elected Advisory
Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs), which
have legal standing to offer a recommenda-
tion to the ABC Board.
For local hospitality business owners, there
is no end to the continuing renegade interfer-
ence by the nay-saying few against the com-
munity amenities desired by a clear majority
of residents throughout the city. Even after an
initial license is nally acquired.
To his credit, Graham has created a con-
text for addressing the current abuse of the
system by these small groups. Last Decem-
ber he assembled a spectrum-spanning
ABC Working Group balanced between
citizens associations, ANC members, small
business owners and advocates to discuss
these problematic procedures. However, di-
vided discussions failed to produce substan-
tial reform recommendations xing the real
problems of the current set-up.
Conrmation that regulatory reform is
required was the conclusion but diddling
around the outer edges was the outcome.
The usual license protesters and small
protesting citizens groups quickly began rail-
ing against these timid and inconsequential
proposals when Graham adopted them in his
pending bill scheduled for committee review
late this week. The bill will subsequently pro-
ceed to the full Council for consideration, al-
lowing for revisions to actually repair the rules.
The overwhelming numbers who support
robust reform like those standing up for
Hanks and other venues facing narrow-mind-
ed obstructionists have it right. Fans of fair-
ness are correct to oppose a system that per-
mits small groups to directly intervene, using
the threat of licensing delays and the burden
of bankruptcy as weapons, while everyone
else is frozen out.
The local ANC is the appropriate and ac-
cessible community forum for all residents
to discuss licensing applications and offer
an advisory opinion to the ABC Board. The
elected ANC members are accountable to
everyone and can be voted out if residents
so decide. The rogue random protest groups
and unrepresentative citizens associations
answer to no one other than themselves.
The D.C. Council faces a critical test of its
commonsense commitment to fairness in an
increasingly sophisticated and dynamic mod-
ern city tired of these licensing protest she-
nanigans from a bygone era.
We wait to see if reform will nally come.

Now the hard work begins
on a progressive agenda
On Tuesday we saw four ballot initiatives
on marriage equality win and the election of
Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin as the rst out
lesbian in the United States Senate. Both are
events I never thought Id see in my lifetime.
Other wins of note are those of Sean Patrick
Maloney in New York; Mark Takano in Califor-
nia; Mark Pocan in Wisconsin; and, of course,
the big prize, the re-election of President
Barack Obama to a second term. These are all
victories not only for the LGBT community but
for America.
Now the work begins. With Congress still
divided, the president will have his work cut
out for him. Obama will never have to run
for ofce again so it is the hope of many that
he will use all the powers of the presidency,
including the bully pulpit, to move forward a
progressive agenda that will set the nation on
a positive path for the foreseeable future.
The LGBT community had a big role in his
win, from our votes to our money, and we,
along with many others, can expect the presi-
dent to demand action on an inclusive ENDA,
a repeal of DOMA, immigration reform and
environmental issues. We will expect him to
demand action on tax reform, balancing the
budget and moving forward on long-term
solutions to extend the life of Medicare and
Social Security.
This is a huge agenda and one that may
not all happen, but there is no reason to hold
back on ghting for all those issues. If Con-
gress doesnt do its job, at least the people will
see a clear agenda from the White House and
can speak up to change the Congress in 2014.
Many considered Obamas rst term too
timid. There are many things he gets credit
for and the people gave him a second term
because of what he accomplished. Ending
the war in Iraq, passing healthcare reform and
keeping us from falling off a nancial cliff were
enough to earn my enthusiastic support. But
clearly many in the country didnt feel that way.
Now the president has the opportunity to
show them that he has the resolve to move on
a host of issues that will carry the nation safely
through the 21st century. It is time to stop talk-
ing about these issues in only nuanced terms
but rather to move forward boldly. Leadership
is staking out strong positions and recognizing
that while the people and the Congress may
not be with you at rst, with reason and appro-
priate compromise, you can get them to fol-
low. People respect strength and resolve and
that is what the president will need to show in
his second term.
The LGBT community needs to support
him while at the same time push for more
action. We need to help him convince the
Congress about the issues we care about and
focus our attention on both sides of Pennsyl-
vania Avenue. It will not be enough to get the
White House to speak out, though that is cru-
cial, but we need to inundate the Congress
with our message and let them know that the
time is now for them to act because we de-
mand our full civil and human rights. It is not
enough to wait for the courts to act but we
must push Congress for action on a myriad
of issues as well. As a community we must
strengthen our ties with the Latino commu-
nity and work to advance womens rights and
other civil rights as we all ght for the rights of
individuals to live their lives with full and clear
legal protections.
Our Declaration of Independence states,
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that
all men are created equal, that they are en-
dowed by their Creator with certain unalien-
able Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty
and the pursuit of Happiness. Our Constitu-
tion declares, We the People of the United
States, in Order to form a more perfect Union,
establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility,
provide for the common defence, promote
the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings
of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do
ordain and establish this Constitution for the
United States of America.
We hold up these documents, along
with the amendments to the Constitution
and the Bill of Rights, as a blueprint for
democracy. We call for the separation of
church and state because our nation was
founded by many who came here eeing
religious persecution at home. So now is
the time to bring these documents to ful-
llment in our own country and to ensure
that each of us can claim our unalien-
able Right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit
of Happiness.

Arlingtons Signature Theatre is about to
tackle one of the biggest shows in Broadway
and Hollywood history: Dreamgirls.
Director and choreographer Matt
Gardiner had one word to describe his
initial reaction: daunting. For actress
Nova Payton, who will be starring as Efe
White, the word was demanding. For
costume designer Frank Labovitz, the
word was huge.
Dreamgirls is a show that is often tagged
with the word legendary. It was the last
major show of legendary Broadway director
and choreographer Michael Bennett. It was
legendary for the backstage ghts during
workshops, rehearsals and previews, for the
20-minute show-stopping ovation during Act
I on opening night, and for the long run on
Broadway, along with numerous national and
international tours. It was also legendary for
the staging that featured set designer Robin
Wagners rotating towers and for Theonis V.
Aldredges dazzling costumes (both of which
were featured on the shows iconic posters).
And it was legendary for the new
sounds that composer Henry Krieger
brought to Broadway and for the smooth
cinematic way that lyricist and bookwriter
Tom Eyen wove the music and dialogue
together. It became legendary for a movie
adaptation that won an Academy Award
for American Idol runner-up Jennifer
Hudson in her movie debut.
Dreamgirls tells the story of the
Dreamettes, a girl group from Chicago
that rises to international fame. The plot is
loosely based on the saga of Diana Ross
and the Supremes and other Motown-era
gures. After losing a talent competition at
the famous Apollo Theatre in New York, the
Dreamettes are hired as back-up singers
for James Thunder Early. Spurred on by
their ambitious manager Curtis Taylor, Jr.,
the girls break away from Jimmy and begin
performing as the Dreams. Efe White (a
character somewhat based on Supremes
founder Florence Ballard) sings lead and
her friends Deena Jones (the Diana Ross
gure) and Lorrell Robinson sing back-up.
Although he is having an affair with
Efe, Curtis moves Deena to the front of
the group. She has a smoother sound and
a slicker look that he thinks will be more
appealing to white audiences, enabling
the group to cross over and sell more
records. Although the group does become
increasingly popular, Efe is not happy
singing back-up and begins to suspect
that Curtis is having an affair with Deena.
Her suspicions are conrmed when Curtis
dumps her personally and professionally.
Thats the cue for the shows most
famous number, And I Am Telling You Im
Not Going, which original Efe Jennifer
Holliday performed twice last year in D.C.
at Pride and with the Gay Mens Chorus.
As Act II opens and the story moves from
the 1960s to the 1970s, Curtis marries Deena,
who becomes an international superstar,
although she yearns to be seen as a serious
actress. Jimmy falls on hard times when he
rejects Curtis advice on how to appeal to
broader audiences. Efe has a child and
struggles to rebuild her career. The Dreams
help usher in the disco era, and the rest is
music and musical theater history.
Faced with this challenging material
and famous predecessors, Gardiner and
his collaborators have developed a fresh
and exciting approach to the show.
I spent a lot of time with our design
team trying to come up with a way to do
it that honored Michael Bennetts original
intention but made it our own, he says.
At Signature, we would never be able
recreate Bennetts staging, so we are
trying to nd our own way into it that is
more Signature.
For example, the openly gay Gardiner
notes, Bennett and the writers really
played with the idea of perspective, the
change between backstage and onstage. In
that original production he had the use of
these beautiful towers that became iconic
in the way the show is remembered. From
the onset, we knew that we werent going
to do it that way. We asked how do we play
with the idea of perspective, both onstage
and offstage, and the whole idea of the
glamorous sparkle and whats underneath
it. To answer that, theyve created a more
intimate approach to the musical that uses a
smaller ensemble and focuses more clearly
on the Dreams and their leading men.
One of the things that will give Signature
Theatres production of Dreamgirls a
distinctive feel is Nova Y. Paytons highly
anticipated performance as Efe White.
Gardiner freely admits, It is no secret that
Signature chose the piece for her and I
dont think anyones going to be let down.
Maryland native Gardiner is full of
praise for his star. Shes a wonderful
person rst and foremost and then on top
of that she has the most killer voice. Shes
a spectacular actress and a spectacular
singer and were waiting for her to blow
the roof off Signature.
D.C. native Payton returns the praise to
Gardiner. I love Matt! she says. This will be
second show Ive done with him. (Their rst
collaboration was last seasons Zanadu.)
Matt is brilliant. His vision of the show is
very clear. In rehearsal, hes very precise
about what hes looking for but at the same
time allowing us as actors to bring what we
may see. We are a team trying to put this
production together and he trusts us.
Payton also has great praise for the
work of costume designer Frank Labovitz,
although she wont reveal much about the
fabulous costumes she will be wearing.
I dont want to give away too much,
she says, because when you think about
Dreamgirls you think about the beautiful
costumes.
But she does praise Labovitz for his
innovative design. What excited me
about Franks renderings was how different
they were from what Ive seen before. Its
fresh and a very new feel, but it stays true
to the period. And of course there are lots
of sequins and bright colors and beautiful
shoes and wonderful hair and makeup.
You can denitely look forward to that.
Labovitz estimates that there are about
200 costumes in the show. The Dreams
alone have 11 sets of three matching
dresses, plus their individual costumes
with day looks and eveningwear Its
a constant parade of costumes, the
designer says. If an actor isnt onstage,
hes offstage changing clothes. Labovitz
says the costumes are almost like
another character in the play. They help
to tell the story, detailing the changing
circumstances of the characters and
capturing the feel of the rapidly changing
world around them. Its rare that you get
to work on a show where the costumes are
so central to telling the story.
The costume designer is also a big fan
of Hollywoods version of Dreamgirls.
One of the things that was great about
the movie was how faithful they were to
the original, he says. The movie version
really maintains the character of the show.
But he adds, theres nothing like seeing
the show in a theater. There is something
magical about watching it live. Some of the
moments in the show are unbelievable, like
when someone does a costume change
onstage in front of you and you dont see
it happen because of tricks with lights and
costumes. Those moments onstage seem
to defy reality. Like when the Dreams exit
in one costume and appear onstage six
seconds later in a different outt.
The opening of Dreamgirls at
Signature Theatre will also have a special
resonance for D.C.s LGBT community.
While the show is a favorite for gay and
lesbian audiences, the shows signature
song, And I Am Telling You Im Not
Going has long been a special favorite
for drag queens in the nations capital and
around the world. Many of D.C.s leading
ladies of drag will no doubt be rotating
the song back into their act. And thats ne
with Nova Payton, who says, I love seeing
the ladies do what they do.

Kenya Hutton noticed in his LGBT advocacy work that there was often a gap between
services for teens and young adults. That and losing a good friend to AIDS in his native
Brooklyn in the 90s, inspired him to devote his life to HIV and young adult work.
A lot of it is HIV prevention work and getting young adults to think about the
things we do to put ourselves at risk, he says. And encouraging them to be
productive citizens who dont just have to accept whatever is thrown at them.
Since moving to Washington in 2006 after two years of doing this kind of work
full time in New York, Hutton, 34, has worked variously with HIPS, Us Helping
Us and more recently, the Carl Vogel Center and a new organization, Voices of
One in Maryland. Hes also on the board of D.C. Black Pride. Consulting and
programming are his full-time work. Hutton says hes been blessed to be able
to nd a way to do this kind of work as a career. In September, he was honored
at an Alston House benet for his youth advocacy work.
Growing up in New York in the 90s was tough, very tough, he says.
Although in New York, there were places you could go and get services, nobody
really talked about being gay, HIV or sex in general. It just didnt happen.
Hutton and his boyfriend, Charles, have been dating since earlier this year.
Hutton lives in District Heights, Md., and enjoys volunteering, cooking and
traveling in his free time.

Compelling character
study crackles at
Signature

In gay playwright Christopher Shinns
quietly compelling Dying City (now
making its D.C. premier in a smart,
effective production at Signature Theatre),
a trio of young characters negotiate
emotional battleelds in the shadow of
the Iraq War.
Set in New York, far from Baghdad, the
play begins with Kelly (an aptly reserved
Rachel Zampelli) watching TV alone in her
comfortable New York City apartment
(compliments of set designer Daniel
Conway) when suddenly she receives an
unexpected and not wholly welcomed
evening visitor. Its Peter (Thomas
Keegan), the identical twin brother of her
late husband Craig, a Harvard graduate
student who was killed the previous year
during military service in Iraq. Kelly and
Peter havent spoken since the funeral.
A successful Hollywood actor in town
doing theater (ONeills classic portrait of
family dysfunction, Long Days Journey
Into Night), Peter is all ingratiating charm
as he coaxes Kelly, a therapist, to talk
about their shared loss. Guarded and at
times visibly anguished, Kelly reluctantly
enters into conversation. Together, they
revisit the night before Craigs departure
for training camp in Georgia, the murky
circumstances surrounding his death and
their disparate backgrounds (Kellys rich
parents were emotionally absent, the
twins father was a violent Vietnam vet and
their mother held ambitions for her sons
to escape the connes of their modest
Midwestern upbringing).
An intimate play, Dying City is ideal
for the Ark, Signatures smaller black box.
The fast-paced dramas action alternates
between Peter and Kellys strained visit
and ashback scenes involving Kelly and
Craig (also played by brawny Keegan). This
casting trick requires a lot of quick exits
and entrances. Fortunately, gay director
Matthew Gardiners shrewd staging along
with Colin K. Bills lighting and Matt Rowes
transporting sound design make time
travel smooth and not the least bit hokey.
By changing shirts and adding a little
swagger, Keegan morphs from the more
effusive, self-absorbed Peter to his butcher,
more reticent straight brother Craig.
Slowly, Kelly becomes more
comfortable. The in-laws are getting along.
Conversation strays to backstage gossip
and the latest on Peters tumultuous love
life. But when Peter unexpectedly pulls
out a cache of beautifully crafted emails
sent to him from Craig while in Iraq, the
intentions of Peters visit become suspect.
While both Kelly and Peter have always
dismissed the Iraq War as destructive
and senseless adventure, the once pro-
war Craig demonstrates in his eloquent
missives that during the last days of his
life, he joined the anti-war ranks with
his brother and wife. Other revelatory
passages (but less well-received by Kelly)
come to light as well. Layers of truths and
untruths, and who knew what when, are
explored.
Since her husbands death, Kelly spends
a lot of time holed up at home watching
TIVOed episodes of Law and Order.
After seeing scores of episodes, she has
gured out the secret to the cop shows
success: Kelly believes that people nd
comfort in the idea being remembered
after their death. We like the notion that if
were murdered, a team of detectives and
forensic experts will convene to remember
us and give closure. Nothing about Craigs
death has been neatly closed. And while
Kellys future is uncertain, she seems to be
getting stronger.

think its eating up all my time. Pro: Its fun
to be able to meet guys quickly, wherever
I am. Con: I almost had an accident while
looking for guys on my phone while
driving through North Carolina.

DEAR SCREWED: Hooking up with people
and the hunt for hookups, can feel great.
Our brains produce chemicals that give us
intense feelings of pleasure not just when
we have sex, but also as we move toward
getting naked: during foreplay, while were
irting, and if were using an app to
look for potential partners when we
take the very rst step of launching the
app. So, as you start scanning all those
alluring possibilities on your phone, you are
triggering a neurochemical response in your
brain that can create an awesome high.
The problem is, because simply getting
on the app makes you feel good, you are
likely to get on it more and more often.
And because actually nding hookups
makes you feel good, you can easily get
obsessed with chasing this particular high.
If it sounds like Im using the language
of addiction: Youre right, I am.
Now, lets look at your situation from a
slightly different perspective. The road to
hooking up can be a speedy route to feeling
attractive and desired. The validation we
get, from both hookups and potential
hookups, can seem like a powerful self-
esteem boost. Typically, this leads us to
pursue more and more hookups. Gay men,
who usually have a core experience of
feeling different and defective, are highly
susceptible to this sort of x.
Some problems with this: The boost is
eeting, because external praise for our
surface attributes doesnt really change how
we feel about ourselves and we are likely to
spend more and more time chasing short-
lived validation from people we hardly
know. If you dont actually feel good about
endlessly pursuing hookups, then hanging
out with your app will ultimately lower your
self-esteem. This is the opposite of what
youre looking for and what you feel like
youre getting when you launch the app.
The upshot is, you may be addicted to
an experience that is keeping you hunting
for hookups, even though you say you want
a relationship. And because the particular
high of intense excitement that you are
chasing is a very different experience
from the intimacy and commitment of a
relationship, you are conditioning your
brain to crave hookups, and their pursuit,
rather than something more long-term.
If you want to make a change, you would
benet tremendously from strong support,
because it isnt easy to stop a behavior
with such seductive and pleasurable
payoffs, even if there are also negative
consequences. You report that all your
friends are similarly engaged, which makes
it difcult to do something different.
Consider looking for an additional social
network (live rather than virtual) and
perhaps a therapist knowledgeable about
this issue to help you broaden your sources
of pleasure, stimulation and connection.

Over the years, I have met many couples
at LGBT sporting events and functions.
Usually, one is the athlete and the other is
a supporter of his or her partners athletic
endeavors.
The OUTdoor Adventures Group was
founded by Baltimore couple, Steve Marker
and Joe Palumbo in the summer of 2010.
They share a passion for the outdoors.
We were at a bar one night with a
group of friends and wanted to nd an
opportunity to get together with other
gay men that did not involve drinking,
Palumbo says. Both Steve and I love
hiking, camping and being outdoors so
the group began with day trips.
The day trips have included skydiving,
rock climbing, white water rafting, Gay
Day at Hershey Park and competing in the
Warrior Dash and Tough Mudder. They
have also made two weekend trips part of
their annual activities.
Big Gay Camping is a weekend event
held in the fall every year with the group
camping in Harpers Ferry the rst year
and switching to the gay-friendly locale
of The Woods in Lehigh, Pa., for the last
two years.
When we rst started out, most of the
people in the group were from Baltimore,
Palumbo says. On the last camping trip,
we had close to 40 people from Baltimore,
D.C., Philadelphia and New York.
Coming up for the group is the third
annual Gay Ski Weekend where the group
has reserved a lakefront chalet in Deep
Creek, Md. They have already booked
close to 30 people for the weekend which
will kick off on Jan. 25.
Marker and Palumbo, who met at Gay
Pride in Baltimore in 2008, were married in
July at Old Stone House in Georgetown.
Their honeymoon was an Alaskan cruise
which included 55 of their family and
friends. Festivities on the ship included a
pool party and rock climbing.
Recently, the couple took their
adventuring to the extreme level by
completing the Via Ferrata course at
Nelson Rocks in West Virginia. Via Ferrata
systems are relatively new in the United
States but have been popular for decades
in Europe, where about 300 routes are
open to the public.
Via Ferrata means road with irons in
Italian. The courses have been described
by many as a combination of hiking
and climbing. Via Ferratas are strongly
associated with World War I when the
Italians and Austrians were ghting near
the Dolomites mountain ranges in Italy.
The troops needed a better way to move
through the mountainous area.
The modern Via Ferrata is a steel
cable that runs along the route and is
periodically xed to the rock. Climbing
aids such as iron rungs, pegs, carved
steps, ladders and bridges are often found
on the courses.
The Nelson Rocks facility is one of
about eight in the United States. Marker
and Palumbo nished the 3.5-mile course
in just over ve hours.
Adventuring has always been a part of
our life together, Marker says. Whenever
we are feeling stress, we nd something to
do that will take us outdoors.

Blind lesbian opera singer
shares story in new book

In the new book Do You Dream in
Color?, author Laurie Rubin says she has
a lot to sing about.
Within months of her birth, Rubins
parents knew there was something
unusual about their daughter. Baby Laurie
didnt look at people the way other infants
did and it took several doctor visits to
learn why: her retinas never developed.
She could see light, but nothing more.
And yet that was never an obstacle for
Laurie.
Cant wasnt an option. When she
expressed frustration at not being able
to read, her parents found someone to
teach her Braille. She camped, skied
and, after being taught some basics in
mobility, was eventually mainstreamed
into public school. She learned that
she loved to sing and was very good
at it even landing a small gig on an
album with her friend and mentor, Kenny
Loggins.
High school changed a lot of things,
though. Laurie struggled with math and
with friendship. Mean girls lived up to
their sobriquet and Laurie was often left
out of conversations and cliques. Boys
didnt avoid her, but they didnt interest
her much, either.
For Laurie, music was solace.
She took voice lessons and entered
contests. She practiced and performed in
front of peers. When it came time to go to
college, she chose Oberlin in Ohio, aiming
at a career in opera. Later, she was accepted
for graduate school at Yale Opera.
It was there that she gained a furry
guide and met the love of her life, Jenny.
Today, Rubin lives in New York with
Jenny and their dogs. Rubin, a mezzo-
soprano, performs as often as possible
and her dreams, she says, are like those of
anybody elses. Its the daydreams that are
most important.
Do You Dream in Color? has
a wonderful message in it. Theres
empowerment here, and perseverance.
Its inspiring, but also very clunky.
Part of the problem, I think, is that
much of this book consists of quoted
conversation, which feels inauthentic. It
moves Rubins story along, but not very
well. I also noticed times when a name
occurred in the narrative without prelude,
making me guess at who the individual
was and how (s)he was relevant. The
mystery was usually solved, but not
always quickly. Add the fact that Rubins
story jumps around and, well, I had a hard
time here.
Overall, the message in this book is
great but the delivery method, not so
much. You might like it more if youre an
opera fan, but for most readers, Do You
Dream in Color? is slightly out of tune.

The Washington metro-area housing
market continues to be one of the stron-
gest in the nation, with many motivated and
qualifed buyers eager to purchase property
and call the nations capital home. Young
professionals are a growing and key factor in
this renewed interest in living the district as
the city is seeing a surge in popularity as one
the top cities to live in the country.
When you mention to a longtime D.C.
resident that Washington is now one of the
hippest cities in the U.S., they may look at you
in disbelief. But wait, its true. Some 20 years
ago, Seattle was at the top of the hip list, but
now D.C., along with Houston, has displaced
Seattle as being one of the top cities for at-
tracting young people.
In fact, the average age in the District
is 36 with some 10,000 people ages 25-
34, having moved here between 2009
and 2011, in a trend that will only con-
tinue according to top urbanists and de-
mographers. So why is D.C. now so ap-
pealing to young professionals?
One of the key factors is the job market
and the opportunities that abound for edu-
cated young professionals with everything
the city has to offer. The districts unemploy-
ment rate is among the lowest in the country
and career options are excellent in Washing-
ton, D.C. with the federal government and
all the spin offs in business, science and the
arts that radiate outward from government.
Young people see greater potential to fnd
employment and professional growth in the
District than other areas and can relocate
because they have the most fexibility to
move anywhere in the country to make op-
portunities for themselves.
Another big draw for young profession-
als is the citys dynamic and rich cultural
and social scenes. From the galleries and
museums, restaurants and nightclubs, to
the constant calendar of events and activ-
ities, the city offers something for every-
one to take part in and enjoy in a small
geographic area. All that the city has to
offer is easily accessible with walkable
neighborhoods and public transportation
that is extremely attractive to young pro-
fessionals who want to take part in it all.
One of the most noticeable elements
of this infux of interest from this genera-
tion is refected in the D.C. real estate
market. Downtown D.C. has never been
more popular as a place to live. There is a
litany of condo projects going up as well
as many investors shopping for redos
in the downtown townhouse neighbor-
hoods, hoping to renovate and fip
them, making a quick proft by selling
in this very competitive market with low
inventory. And thanks to the record low
interest rates, qualifed young buyers can
borrow enough to get a starter condo or
townhouse at about the same monthly
amount they would have to pay to rent.
So, the future for the district continues to
look promising with the expectation of con-
tinued growth that will be self-perpetuating,
making the city more prosperous and infu-
ential than it has ever been before. It is a great
time to be living in the nations capital at this
opportune and exciting time when there is
so much renewed interest and growth taking
place in this vibrant and dynamic city.
