Associated Student Government University of Arkansas ASG Senate Resolution No. 13 Authors: Senator Luke Brasuell, Senator Rachel Kuklenski Sponsor: Senator Ellen Rudolph A Resolution to Support the Usage of More Ecofriendly Products Whereas, Styrofoam is polystyrene, non-biodegradable plastic containing a percentage of petroleum that consumes and pollutes the ground soil to the extent Styrofoam products last for centuries in landfills; and At the University of Arkansas, the main consumers of Styrofoam products includes, but is not limited to, campus living houses and Greek life facilities who use items such as cups, saucers, bowls, togo boxes and plates on a daily basis; and Greek organizations as a whole consume over 50,000 Styrofoam cups each week; and Biodegradable dinnerware, such as Eco-Products, are produced from partially recycled materials and serve as a less-wasteful substitute for foam and plastic plates, bowls, and cups; and In an attempt to become a more sustainable campus, Pepsi has supported the idea of Greek and campus life-specific recycling programs that better equip Greek houses and dorms with recycling bins and trash cans as well as Greeks Going Green and Recycling with the Razorbacks organizations; and Greeks Going Green and Recycling with the Razorbacks support switching to a more sustainable, recyclable, and biodegradable dinnerware product for mass consumption; and The topic of price difference of switching to more sustainable products is in the campus and Greek Life facilities discretion and dependent upon their own actions and commitment to the idea of sustainability throughout the University of Arkansas campus; and Pepsi has shown great strides in encouraging ecofriendly practices within the Greek community to lessen our impact as a campus upon the Earth and its landfill usage; then

Be it therefore resolved:

With review and vote, the Associated Student Government supports and encourages the idea of changing dinnerware to more ecofriendly products throughout the campus and Greek community to lessen the impact we as a University make on the environment now and in the future; and In order to maintain recycling productivity and efficiency, we encourage the development of a new position, Sustainability Chair, within each Greek house to promote the movement of campus and educate members as well as outside peoples such as Potential New Members and/or house managers in regard to each organizations role for recycling; and The resolutions authors encourage their respective Senators and leaders of this campus to support Greeks Going Green, Recycling with the Razorbacks, and Razorback Recycling to make the University of Arkansas a prime example of sustainability for other organizations and institutions.
