Ethnic Violence between Balinese Migrants and E n d e m i c Population in South Sumatra Claims 14 Lives
Ethnic violence against transmigrant Balinese living in the villages of Balinuraga and Sidoreno in South Lampung regency (Sumatra) has caused 1,500 people to flee as their homes came under attack by the endemic population. The Balinese residents have taken temporary refuge in area halls and building, while police and military are patrolling the areas to prevent further clashes between the ethnic groups. Caring for the Good Folk who Tend the Good Earth
Bali Farmers Need Government Protection and Tax Subsidies to Preserve Subak Agricultural Lands
The elevation of Bali's traditional subak irrigation system to the list of UNESCO Heritage Sites has also aroused the interest of tourism practitioners interested in preserving the island's continuing appeal as a world tourism destination. Quoted by Bali Post, the chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Conference and Convention Association (INCCA), Ida Bagus Surakusuma (Lolec), said: The income earned from the tourism sector needs to be shared to ensure the continued existence of the subak that has become one of Bali's tourism objects. What's more, the people who care for the subak are of the lower economic class living without sufficient means for their basic needs. At the same time, U N E S C O ' s declaration of the heritage value of Bali's subak system has had a profound effect on the island's farmers. With their farmlands now designated for conservation and preservation, the farmers who own these lands should be prevented from selling their farm lands. But, in fact, farmers have often been compelled to sell their lands to meet their costs of living, school fees, ceremonial costs and rising land taxes. Lolec said that when burdening farmers with preserving the subak system, the government must also help the farmers meet their living costs. The popular leader within Bali's tourism sector called on the government to prevent future diversion of agricultural lands to other uses by fighting for a share of the airport tax in order that these funds can be shared with farmers. www.balidiscovery.com

Lolec, who comments were made on Monday, said the acknowledgement of UNESCO of the subak as a world heritage site must bring practical benefit to the people. THE BUKIT
Much has been written about this dusty, arid and rugged area, which forms the southern most tip of the island.
Limestone cliffs of up to 100 meters in height provide some of the best views in the world, along with some deserted white sandy beaches. Everyone wants a piece of this are, from international hotel chains such as Bvlgari, Versace and Banyan Tree, to established residential villa developers looking for that perfect plot. The area offers secluded beaches, and exclusivity to name but a few reasons why this is fast becoming the place to be. Prices have more than tripled in the area over last 2 years alone with still plenty of potential to be realized, so now is a plan. Only a short 15 minutes drive from the international airport, The Bukit is fast being referred to as the new Millionaires Row.
JIMBARAN
Jimbaran is just south of the airport and Kuta. This was formerly a real backwater of south Bali, just a tiny fishing village with a daily market. That all started to change in the 1980s and Jimbaran is now home to several world class 5 star beach resorts, plus a few more moderate mid-market hotels. There is however little in the way of budget accommodation and there are also many high-end villas in this area, particularly on the ridges of high ground above Jimbaran Bay. This has resulted in monikers such as the "Beverly Hills of Bali" or "Millionaire's Row". The bay itself has a pleasant white sand beach and is very safe for swimming. The three clusters of grilled seafood restaurants on the beach are a major tourist draw in the evenings, as is the truly stunning sunset. Jimbaran is also home to a Norwegian University, Gateway College, with around 500 students studying athletics, philosphy, culture, economics and journalism. The school is located in Kedonganan close to Sari Segara Resort and in Jl, Bantas Kau where it also has a small cafe. Jimbaran has an increasing number of rather chic shops but there is little or no nightlife here. It has the advantage of being a little closer to Kuta and Seminyak and the cultural highlights of Central Bali.

Minnesota, said the rising grain prices can make it difficult to obtain bank financing. "I used to feed a turkey for 22 cents a lb, now it costs 45-50 cents," Burkel said. "When you go to the bank and say, 'I need a line of credit that's twice what I typically have,' they look at you and say, 'Are you out of your mind? How are you getting that back?'" In 2011, the United States produced 5.79 billion lbs of turkey a 7.4 percent drop from the 6.25 billion lbs produced in 2008, according to USDA data. The nation consumed about 5.02 billion lbs of turkey in 2011 6.6 percent less than the 5.37 billion lbs in 2008. Industrywide, farmers and processors say they have scaled back their flocks, and further production cuts are expected as grain prices remain high. September's egg set placements fell 6 percent from a year earlier, according to USDA data. Jim Hertel, managing partner of Illinois based food retail consultancy Willard Bishop, cautioned that even if turkey wholesale prices continue to rise savvy retailers will eat as much of the difference as possible. "Smart retailers will be looking to absorb the costs they can, and spread any of the price increases across other categories that haven't been as hard hit," Hertel said.

William Shakespeare's plays are getting a 21st century style makeover in the form of new apps for tablets and smart phones nearly 500 years after the Bard took pen to parchment.
News Corner
Plays such as "Romeo and Juliet" and "Macbeth" spring to life in iPad apps released by Cambridge University Press, which pairs the texts with audio performances, commentary and other interactive content, transforming the classic plays for the digital age. The apps are part of a new series called Explore Shakespeare that was introduced by the British publishing house to expand the playwright's reach to casual readers. "A lot of people have a copy of Shakespeare on their bookshelf that they never got around to reading because they have this idea that Shakespeare is hard or has to be studied to be appreciated," said John Pettigrew, executive producer of the Explore Shakespeare series. Pettigrew believes the plays are meant to be enjoyed and are accessible provided readers are given context to overcome outdated or poetic language. While the core focus of the app is on the actual text, readers can consult glossaries, notes, photos and synopses at any point in the script. "Everything there is designed to keep you in the play and to put you in the mind of the actor, director or writer," he explained. To understand less common language, readers can tap on words and phrases to delve into their meaning. "A classic one is in 'Romeo and Juliet' which is `wherefore art thou Romeo?' It's not 'where are you Romeo?', It's `why are you Romeo?` So that kind of phrase gets a glossary to explain what is meant," said Pettigrew. The apps also include full audio performances from stars such as Kate Beckinsale and Martin Sheen. Other features help readers to visualize relations between actors in a scene, understand how Shakespeare interweaves themes throughout the play, and to analyze the text more thoroughly. "You can delve into the language or themes or interpretation, but our first task is to show that it's just a good story," Pettigrew said. Although the app was designed with consumers in mind, Pettigrew believes it could also play a role in education, with students embracing the app over its print counterpart. "For a 13-year old, Shakespearean language can be a barrier and to have something right there on the page is really helpful," he said. According to Pettigrew, the publishing house

The nearer the bar, the greater the chances of risky drinking
Does living near a bar encourage people to overindulge, or do heavy drinkers move to neighborhoods with easy access to alcohol? A new study suggests it may be the former for some people. Researchers in Finland found that of nearly 55,000 Finnish adults followed for seven years, those who moved closer to bars were somewhat more likely to increase their drinking. When a person moved one kilometer (0.6 mile) closer to a bar, the odds of becoming a heavy drinker rose 17 percent. A "heavy drinker" meant more than 10 ounces a week for men and about seven ounces a week for women, of distilled alcohol. The link doesn't prove that mere distance from a bar turns people into alcohol abusers, according to the researchers. "Factors other than proximity are also likely to explain the observed association," lead researcher Jaana L. Halonen, of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health in Kuopio, said in an email. One possibility, she noted, is that drinkers choose to live near bars. But she and her colleagues also looked at a subset of people who didn't move the bars came closer to them. And the findings were similar among those individuals, too, Halonen said. The researchers also accounted for some other factors, like the neighborhood poverty level. (In Finland, Halonen said, lower-income people are more likely to drink heavily than wealthier people are.) And distance from a bar remained tied to the odds of becoming a heavy drinker. The findings, reported in the journal Addiction, are based on surveys of 54,778 Finnish public employees who were followed over an average of seven years. At the outset, there was a pattern of heavy drinking being more common when people lived close to bars, or restaurants or hotels with bars. Among people who were an average of 0.12 kilometers (400 feet) from the nearest drinking hole, a little over nine percent were heavy drinkers. Of those 2.4 kilometers (about 1.5 miles) away, some 7.5 percent were heavy drinkers. When the researchers looked at patterns over time, it turned out that people who moved closer to bars - or had bars move closer to them - tended to have higher odds of becoming a heavy drinker. The increased risk was modest. But at the population level, Halonen noted, even a modest association between access to bars and heavy drinking becomes "notable." The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines a standard drink as a 1.5 ounce "shot" of 80 proof alcohol, five ounces of wine or eight ounces of beer and considers heavy drinking to be an average of more than two drinks a day for men and one a day for women. For any one person, of course, the risk of becoming a problem drinker depends on a whole range of factors, Halonen pointed out. But, she added, it's possible that restricting bars' hours, or other alcohol retailers' operating hours, could limit locals' risky drinking. Since the study was done in Finland, one question is how well the findings would apply to other countries. That's unclear, Halonen said, because drinking habits and "cultural norms" vary by country. "For instance," she noted, "in the UK and Australia, heavy drinking is reported to be more common than in Finland, whereas in the USA it is less common." "On the other hand," Halonen added, "it is unlikely that easy access to a bar would affect drinking only among Finnish employees."

Dozens of artists in the eastern Indian state of Bihar are painting roadside trees and their leaves with colorful stories from Hindu epics, hoping to save the region's already critically sparse greenery. The unusual campaign, using coats of paint and brushes, has been launched in Madhubani, a northern Bihar district known for its religious and cultural awareness, resulting in hundreds of otherwise untended roadside trees covered in elaborate artwork. Artists are depicting the moods of deities, scenes from Hindu classics such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata, or an imaginary scene showing an elderly woman restraining a man coming with an axe to cut trees. They believe the artwork will prompt the deeply religious locals to drop any idea of cutting down the trees out of fear of incurring the wrath of the deities. "We are using the deities as a cover", said Shashthi Nath Jha, who also runs an NGO dedicated to empowering women and child laborers, speaking by phone from Madhubani, around 1,200 kilometers (746 miles) east of New Delhi. They work in the style of Madhubani painting, a form of Indian painting done with fingers, twigs, the points of fountain pens and even matchsticks, using natural colors and characterized by brilliant geometrical patterns. "I have painted themes of 'Sita-swayamvara' (the marriage of the deities Rama and Sita) on the tree trunks so that those willing to cut them would drop the idea," 19-yearold Kushaboo told local media. According to Jha, the initiative has drawn the attention of the international community as well, with a team from Switzerland recently visiting to study how art could be used to convey a strong social message. The government is taking additional steps to increase greenery in the region, with plans to plant 250 million saplings in the next five years and appointing "Tree Friends" to care for young trees planted along roads and other public places. But Jha said locals also had a debt of sorts to repay. "Plants and trees have brought color to our life. Now it's our duty to put color on them," Jha said.

Hagihon. A report in Israeli newspaper Maariv on Friday said the Patriarchate was threatening to shut the doors of the church, which is a major pilgrimage site for millions of tourists. The church lies deep inside Jerusalem's Old City walls. It encompasses Golgotha, or Calvary, where Jesus is believed to have been crucified and the tomb where he was buried and resurrected. A church was first built there in the 4th century under Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman emperor, whose mother, Queen Helena, had visited the site and identified it as the place of Jesus' resurrection. The General Secretary of the Patriarchate, Archbishop of Constantina Aristarchos, had no comment on the Maariv report. He said the church was willing to pay water bills from now on, but that the accumulated debt, stemming back years, would be problematic. "We trust God and hope that people will help us," he said, adding that the Patriarchate has sent letters to Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Maariv said that for decades there had been a tacit agreement between the church and a former mayor of Jerusalem, exempting the Patriarchate from paying for water piped to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. A spokesman for Hagihon, however, said the law did not permit the company to make such exemptions. Talks with the Patriarchate have been going on for years, he said. The company had refrained from taking lawful enforcement steps, such as shutting the water off at the church, in order not to disrupt prayers and tourist activity at the site.

The belatedly crowned winner of a $23 million California lottery jackpot says she had stuffed the lucky ticket in her car and left it there forgotten for months, until a surveillance camera photo of the ticket's purchase surfaced on the Internet. Only when she recognized her daughter in the picture, which state lottery officials had publicly circulated in a desperate attempt to locate the missing winner, did Julie Cervera, 69, realize to her amazement that she was a multimillionaire. For Cervera, a resident of the high-desert town of Victorville who has been on disability for 20 years and described herself as broke, the unexpected turn of fortune could not have come at a more opportune time. "I have maybe a dollar in my pocket, they just shut off my cable, my electric bill is $600 and my (bank) account is also overdrawn," Cervera said, a day after coming forward to claim her prize. Afterward, Cervera said, she stashed the ticket into the console of her car and never bothered to check it against the winning numbers announced later. "I put on my 99-cent glasses, I saw it, and I thought she (Charliena) robbed a bank," Cervera said, explaining that she initially misunderstood the meaning and purpose of the photo. It took a few moments for it to dawn on her that she had won a $23 million lottery drawing. Cervera said opted to take the money in a single, lesser lump-sum payment, which lottery officials said will amount to nearly $18 million before taxes, rather than receiving the full jackpot parceled out in installments. Cervera, who has adopted two boys with special needs, said that she wants to share the winnings with her children, including Charliena, and her grandchildren.

Daniel Day Lewis had little more than a statue and a few famous speeches to go on when he first agreed to play President Abraham Lincoln on screen.

While efforts to pass the Thirteenth Amendment in late 1864 and early 1865 take centre stage in the film, it also delves into Lincoln's life at home with his wife and sons Robert (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and Tad (Gulliver McGrath). Spielberg said the film was never intended to be a biography of Lincoln. "We needed to focus it in on a working president and a father and a husband," Spielberg explained. "You couldn't do that if it was the greatest hits of Abraham Lincoln. We would have been dilettantes as filmmakers and as actors. We would have been hitting all the high points and just giving you the headlines and not giving you any sense of the depth of this character, this man," he added. Gordon-Levitt said he didn't get to know DayLewis until after production wrapped, despite the numerous scenes they shared. "I never met Daniel in person," he said. "I only ever met the president, only ever heard the president's voice. I called him sir, he called me Robert." After the last day of shooting, the cast went out in the evening to celebrate "and that was the first time I personally met Daniel," said Gordon-Levitt. He showed up in jeans and a T-shirt and had a completely different voice and posture," said the actor. "He was like one of my friends you know this kind of cool, artist guy, having a Guinness and just laughing and having a great time."

Israel Folau's AFL career is over after the high-profile rugby league convert quit the Greater Western Sydney Giants two seasons into a multi-million dollar, four-year deal. Folau made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday, saying he did not have the passion to continue a career in AFL. "I've really enjoyed my experience at the Giants. In the end I think the passion wasn't quite right," Folau said, confirming he told the Giants on Wednesday night after about a month's consideration. "If I stayed I guess I was kind of cheating myself. "I had to be honest and move forward. "I had to be honest with the club and be up front with them, otherwise it wouldn't be fair for these guys to move forward." playing well so it wouldn't be that hard," Folau said of his former Broncos team-mate. "But the decision that I had to make was the one that I wanted to do." Folau said he was still proud of what he had achieved. "It was definitely not a mistake," he said. "I've learnt a lot about the game and myself and I wouldn't change anything." "Everyone has their different opinions and views on my decisions. "At the end of the day it's only mine that matters." "I've enjoyed every game I've been involved in. To be quite honest I didn't think I'd play that many games." Giants chief executive David Matthews thanked Folau and described him as a "trailblazer" in the game. Kevin Sheedy maintained Folau would have been a star had he started playing the game from a younger age but still held out hope of an unlikely return. "Izzy might come back in two years saying 'I haven't got the job done yet'," the veteran coach said. AFL boss Andrew Demetriou said Folau left the league with its "blessing". "Our focus is on what Israel feels is right for him as an individual and as a sportsman, and so we support what has been a very tough decision for him," he said in a statement. By cutting Folau and his lucrative contract loose, the Giants are a strong chance to recruit former Crows forward Kurt Tippett. Tippett will be available in the AFL's preseason draft after a move from Adelaide to Sydney broke down during the trade period. Matthew said discussions with Tippett's management will be "re-engaged".

Folau's exit from the NRL was written off by many as a publicity stunt to assist GWS's inception into the AFL - the success of which was undoubtedly greater than Folau's on-field production. Despite his telling size, power and athleticism, Folau averaged just six touches and kicked two goals in his 13 games in 2012. In stark contrast to fellow convert Karmichael Hunt, Folau struggled to adapt to his new game, as the Giants experimented playing him in defence, up forward and in the ruck.
